FOUR DIE IN AUTO MISHAPS
Four deaths resulting from automobile accidents were recorded over the weekend in Ocean and
Burlington Counties.
Victims in the Burlington County accidents were Mrs. Mary B. Conroy, 29, of 13 Ridge View
Place, Willingboro, and Miss Nancy Cleary, 18, of Gardenia Drive in the Spring Hill Apartments, Maple
Shade. The two accidents were not connected.
Mrs. Conroy, wife of William J. Conroy, died in a Route 130 three-car, rear-end smashup
in Edgewater Park Township last night. According to police, Mrs. Conroy had stopped behind another car
whose driver, Robert C. Ent, 50 of 36 West Broad Street, Burlington, had stopped for a red traffic light.
Rear End
An auto driven by Nathaniel Dandridge, 62, of Philadelphia, slammed into the rear of Mrs.
Conroy’s small Japanese auto, Trooper John Hennessy said. The smashup took place in the center of the
south bound lane, close to the Bridgeboro Road, at 6 p.m.
Miss Cleary, who died in Burlington County Memorial Hospital at 12:35 a.am. Sunday, was one
of two girls involved in the collision of a 19-year-old car in which they were riding, and a pickup truck, at
New Albany and Church Road in Moorestown Township. Injured in the crash was Kay Nunsviller, 18, of
504 Pompess Avenue, Cinnaminson. She was listed in critical condition today in the same hospital,
suffering fractured leg bones and a scalp cut.
Who Drove
Policy said they have not determined which girl was driving the car registered in the name of
Miss Nunsviller’s father. The driver of the pick-up was Charles Briggs, 35, of 315 Center Street,
Moorestown, police.
In Ocean County, a Lakehurst housewife and her 2 ½ month old daughter were killed Saturday in
a car crash. Karen Yelich, 19, and her daughter, April, died when a car driven by her husband James
skidded off Manchester Boulevard. Yelich was listed in fair condition today at Community Memorial

Burlco man admits guilt in horse fraud case
By PATRICIA PARENTE
Staff Writer
MOUNT HOLLY – A Burlington County horse trainer pleaded guilty to witness tampering yesterday in a
plea bargain agreement that includes dismissal of insurance fraud charges stemming from the deaths of
eight race horses between 1980 and 1983.
The guilty plea, which carries a maximum five-year sentence in state prison and a maximum
$7,500 fine, was entered by Burton Sipp, 42, of Springfield Township.
According to Burlington County Assistant Prosecutor Gregg Shivers, there is a presumption of
non-incarceration for Sipp because he is a first-time offender.
Sentencing was set for July 25 in Burlington County Superior Court.
SHIPP WAS INDICTED in December 1984 on charges of inflating the insurance value of eight
thoroughbred horses and then collecting the insurance money when the horses mysteriously died or
had to be put to death because of unexplained injuries, Shivers said.
Sipp pleaded guilty yesterday to contacting the attorney of Walter Johnson, a key prosecution
witness, in April 1985 and offering to “send him on a vacation” in exchange for his failure to testify, the
prosecutor said.
Johnson was expected to testify about his participation with Sipp in one of the insurance
transactions and was expected to recount incriminating statements made by Sipp, Shivers said.
According to Shivers, the state agreed to dismiss the insurance fraud indictment against Sipp
“despite the fact that the evidence against him was strong” because the prosecution’s primary goal was
to remove Sipp from the New Jersey racing industry.
That should be accomplished through the tampering conviction, he said.
SHIVERS ALSO said the cost of prosecuting the insurance fraud case, a trial that was expected to begin in
September and could have lasted four to six weeks would have been “enormous.”
The state had planned to bring in witnesses from London, California, Montana, Florida, Kentucky
and New England – locations where some of the horses had been bought, the prosecutor said.
Pending civil litigation between Sipp and the insurance companies also was instrumental in the
decision to plea bargain, Shivers said.
County Prosecutor Stephen Raymond said he plans to send a letter to the New Jersey Racing
Commission informing it of the guilty plea and requesting Sipp’s removal from the racing industry.

LOCKJAW KILLS TWO AFTER VACCINATION
Deaths of Perks Children in Burlington Supposedly Due to Impure Virus
BURLINGTON, Sept. 30. – The deaths of two little brothers, Frederick and Charles Perks, 7 and 5 years
old, yesterday, from tetanus, due to impure virus used in vaccination, have put forty families in this city
in panic because the same physician vaccinated children with vaccine received in the same consignment.
The boys are the children of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Perks, of Pearl Street.
Dr. John S. Conroy, who performed the operation on the Perks children, started upon a round of
households to investigate every case as soon as he learned the lads had died in the Pennsylvania
Hospital, Philadelphia, yesterday. They were vaccinated about a month ago, so that they might go to
school, the rules of the Board of Education, and the State Board of Health requiring certificates of
vaccination for entrance of all pupils.
The mother of the lads is a trained nurse, and she used every known precaution. The physicians say that
in such cases tetanus usually develops within 30 days, but here was a period of 26. They expressed the
opinion that it is impurity of the virus, not a lack of care, that caused the disease.
Dr. Conroy said he would make cultures from the remaining packages of of virus to learn if the tetanus
germ is present. Mrs. Perks and Dr. Conroy said this afternoon they would always advise against
vaccination.
“I think vaccination is a protection against smallpox,” the doctor said “but I would rather run the chance
I have a little son, and I can say now that he will never be vaccinated as long as I have anything to say
about it.”
“Never again will I allow any of my children to be vaccinated,” Mrs. Perks said. “My three other children
would have been dead now too, I suppose, if I had carried out my intention of having them vaccination.
We decided it was unnecessary, because they were too young.”

DEATHS – In Evesham, Burlington county, _______ ately, after a short illness, WILLIAM REEVE, Esq.
formerly a member of the Legislature.
On the quarter deck of the Constitution Frigate, at N. York, on the 2d instant, Capt. SAMUEL
EVANS, having ruptured a blood vessel in ascending the gang-way of that ship.
In Trenton on the 2d inst. After a short illness, JOSEPH IVINS, son of Thomas Ivins, in the 19th
year of his age. The deceased was an apprentice in this office – quick in his perceptions, active,
intelligent and industrious – just opening into manhood, with the promise of future usefulness and
distinction in society. – One short week has changed the scene – and blasted the fond hopes of his
relatives and friends – leaving a solemn warning, especially to the young, flushed with the prospect of
length of days, of the uncertainty of life – and to all of the importance of being prepared for that great
change, which all, sooner or later, must certainly meet.
In Princeton, on the 29th ult. Mr. PEREZ ROWLEY, of that place.
In Hopewell, on the 6th inst. GEORGE WELLING, con of Mr. Charles Welling, of that township,
aged 19 years.
At Lamberton on the 5th instant, Mr. ROBERT SHERRARD, aged 55 years.
At Harrisburgh, Penn. MARGARET, wife of James Boyd, and daughter of J. Emerson of Trenton.
At his seat, in Marietta, Ohio, on the 4th ult. The venerable and highly distinguished Gen. RUFUS
PUTNAM, formerly of Rutland in this county, aged 86. This distinguished champion of the war of the
Revolution, and the fast friend of WASHINGTON, gathered a small band of tried souls, and at the close of
the war, in 1783, made arrangements and settled on the west bank of the Ohio in 1787, at Marietta,
then a savage wilderness. He has lived to see the State of Ohio the fourth in the Union, in point of
population – having 14 Representatives in Congress, while Massachusetts, his native State, has but 13.
Gen RUFUS PUTNAM is acknowledged the father of the Western County, and lived to the day when Ohio
can number upwards of 800,000 sours. – This is worthy of note. His soul was pure and unsullied – a
Christian that carried the mantle of charity – liberal, generous, hospitable – with a large share of
philanthropy. – He died an honor to human nature.
