THE FUSE ÖRESUND TALKS HONG KONG: sustainability at the extremes Mathew Pryor Professor of Landscape Architecture University of Hong Kong Programme Introduction and launch of STAD no. 16/2017 ‘Bortom storstaden’ Titti Olsson, Editor-in-chief Tidskriften STAD Lecture ‘Hong Kong: sustainability at the extremes’ Mathew Pryor, Professor of Landscape Architecture, University of Hong Kong Discussion over drinks and snacks with Mathew Pryor, Professor of Landscape Architecture, University of Hong Kong Lisa Diedrich, Professor of Landscape Architecture, SLU Caroline Dahl, Head of MOVIUM Think Tank Form/Design Center Lilla Torg 9, Malmö March 14, 2017, 17.00 The unique high rise high density form of Hong Kong is an extreme condition in which to test theories of sustainable urban development. In some of the most extreme urban living conditions, it is surprising to find a population that not only outlives the rest of the world, but enjoys a high standard of living, a green and healthy environment, unparalleled levels of infrastructural efficiency, strong family values and multicultural community structures, financial wealth, and stable government. In his presentation Mathew Pryor examines the nature of Hong Kong and its own particular form of sustainability, and discusses both the successes and some of the hidden costs. Matthew Pryor is Head of the Division of Landscape Architecture, and an Associate Professor at The University of Hong Kong. He teaches sustainable practices, landscape design, and professional ethics. His research addresses issues of greening and public health, public space and walkability and the development of new pedagogical approaches to the teaching of landscape architecture. His 25 years as a practicing landscape architect in Hong Kong has included leading roles in notable projects such as the Hong Kong Wetland Park and Hong Kong Disneyland, as well as with long running initiatives concerning the remediation of degraded landscapes within the Territory.
