Dobbs County was formed from Johnston County in 1758. Wayne County was formed from Dobbs County in 1779. (source: Johnson, Bob and Charles S. Norwood, eds. History of Wayne County, North Carolina: A Collection of Historical Stories Created by the Heritage Committee on the Bicentennial Commission and Published in Goldsboro News-Argus, April 6, 1975-July 4, 1976. Goldsboro, N.C.: Wayne County Historical Association, 1979, p. 30.) PURPOSE This pathfinder is meant to provide a list of genealogy sources specific to Wayne County, North Carolina. The main focus is on materials available at the Wayne County Public Library. The secondary focus is on materials that are easily available to Wayne County North Carolina residents. SCOPE Resources included are those dealing with Wayne County genealogy and history from its beginning to the present. Also included are sources for Craven, Johnston and Dobbs counties for the years that Wayne County was part of those counties. Print, microform, and Internet sources are included. Specific libraries and archives were searched to find resources. They are The Family History Library, The State Archives of North Carolina, The State Library of North Carolina, The Wayne Community College Library, The Wayne County Courthouse and the Wayne County Public Library. These collections were chosen because their resources are available locally to the residents of Wayne County, with the exception of the State Archives of North Carolina and the State Library of North Carolina. The State Archives and State Library were selected because they have large collections of Wayne County genealogy resources and the drive is only a little over an hour from Wayne County. The State Archives also sells copies of its microfilm. METHOD Collections that were searched to find sources for the pathfinder and the methods used to search them are listed below. Keep in mind that the collections at these resources may change at any time. The following county names and Wayne County cities/town names were used as search terms for the collections verified by an online catalog: Wayne County, Johnston County, Dobbs County, Craven County, Adamsville, Belfast, Bethel, Best, Brogden, Buck Swamp, Dobbersville, 4 Dudley, Elroy, Eureka, Faro, Fremont, Genoa, Goldsboro, Grady, Grantham, Hood Swamp, Indian Springs, Jordans Chapel, Kennedy Crossroads, Langston, Little River, Mar-Mac, MillerPeacocks Crossroads, Mount Olive, Musgraves Crossroads, Nahunta, New Hope, Newsome, Patetown, Pikeville, Pinewood, Piney Grove, Pricetown, Rosewood, Saulston, Seven Springs, Smith Chapel, Stevens Mill, Stony Creek, Walnut Creek, Watery Branch and Watson Crossroads. This returned a list of topics for Wayne County, N.C. and then each topic was looked at and appropriate materials were included in the pathfinder. There was a link on the page with the Wayne County topics called ‘View Related Places.’ This link was selected which resulted in a list of materials for Wayne County towns. Each link was selected and appropriate materials were included in the pathfinder. ‘Place’ searches were also performed using the keywords ‘Craven,’ ‘Dobbs, ’ and ‘Johnston’ for those North Carolina counties. Topics were looked at and appropriate materials were added to the pathfinder if they covered a time period when Wayne County was part of those counties. The ‘View Related Places’ link was not selected for counties other than Wayne. Most of the materials for Wayne County are available at the main library in Salt Lake City, Utah. Materials can, however, be sent from the main library, for a fee, to the Family History Center located in Goldsboro. The Family History Library Catalog was last accessed on 10/15/02 and last checked for collection updates on 9/25/02. Materials were verified on the Internet, they were not looked at in person. This site was last accessed on 10/14/02 and last checked for collection updates 9/17/02. 5 The State Library of North Carolina 109 East Jones St. Raleigh, NC 27601 (919)-733-7222 State Library Online Catalog: http://go.dcr.state.nc.us The State Library of North Carolina holdings were searched by using their online catalog. The second section lists resources available at the other selected locations, but not at WCPL or the Wayne County Courthouse. The third section lists the types of records available at the Wayne County Courthouse. A table of contents at the beginning of the pathfinder lists the page numbers of genealogy categories. Items available at WCPL are annotated because they were assessed individually, the others were not. Information for each entry includes author, title, place of publication, publisher, and date of publication when available. At the end of each entry is a list of abbreviations for the libraries which own the resource. Wayne County Public Library is not listed at the end of entries because there is an entire section devoted to its holdings. Here is a list of abbreviations used in the pathfinder and what they stand for: FHL – Family History Library SA – North Carolina State Archives SL – State Library of North Carolina, Genealogy Department (if the source listed is at the State Library in another department it is noted) WCC – Wayne County Community College WCPL – Wayne County Public Library Sample Entry: author title place of publication publisher date of publication Howell, Frances G.
