Preface
I have been doing genealogy as a hobby for over 30 years, and fairly recently have started to
share some of my research in the form of books, in PDF format. Most of these books are
“ahnentafel books,” which are ancestor tables, with information on ancestors of six of my
eight great-grandparents.
In addition, I have been working on some projects involving descendants. This format is
perhaps more difficult, since I do not have the same degree of information on certain branches
of family that diverged from my own branch many years ago. In some cases I have been able
to contact other family members who have more direct information, but in many cases I am
left to what I can find on the internet. Luckily, with sites such as ancestry.com,
familysearch.org, newspaperarchive.com and genealogybank.com, it is possible to find much
information online. I hope that by sharing what I have, some relatives will come forth with
more information which will make this book more interesting and valuable to future
generations.
This book is intended for the personal use of those who are related to this family. Facts cannot
be copyrighted, and can be used and shared without restriction. However, please do not copy,
word for word, the text of this book, unless your copying is not shared publicly. I have
included numerous footnotes. I encourage interested people to look up the original sources
and put them in their own words, adding to my information where possible instead of merely
copying it. If you are not sure if your use of my book is appropriate or not, please ask
permission.

Laurens Hull and Dorcas Ambler
DR. LAURENS HULL was born 6 Jun 1779, in Bethlehem, CT.1 He was the son of Dr. Titus Hull
and Olive Lewis. The Hull family included many doctors, in fact Laurens Hull was the seventh
generation of Hulls, in his direct line, to practice medicine. At the age of 19, he studied
medicine with Dr. David Hull of Fairfield, remaining there about two years.2 He was licensed to
practice by the Connecticut State Medical Society in May 1802.3 He moved to Augusta, Oneida
County, NY, in November of that year and continued his studies with his cousin Amos G. Hull. 4
He married Dorcas Ambler 3 Oct 1803, in Bethlehem, CT.5 The ceremony was performed by
Rev. Azel Backus.6 Dorcas Ambler was born 1 Nov 1780, in Bethlehem, CT, the daughter of
David Ambler and Olive Wildman.7
In September 1804 Dr. Hull opened an office in Bridgewater, NY. In 1806 he took part in the
organization of the Oneida County Medical Society.8 He was a surgeon in the New York State
Militia during the War of 1812.9 In 1813 he was elected to the state assembly as a
representative from Oneida County.10 In 1816 he was a delegate to the first state convention
held in NY to nominate a governor and lieutenant governor.11 In 1817 he was a delegate to the
State Medical Society and was twice reelected, each term being four years. In 1825 he served
again in the state assembly. In 1826 he was elected a Fellow of the College of Physicians and

Surgeons of the University of New York.12 The following year he received an honorary degree
of doctor of medicine from the regents of the same university.13
In 1836 Dr. Hull and his family moved to Angelica, Allegany County, NY.14 (He was discharged
from the church at Bridgewater April 23 of that year.15) According to C. M. Crandall, at that
time “he became interested in manufacturing pursuits, pretty much abandoning the practice
of medicine.”16 With his brother Andrew, he completed a woolen mill at Joncey, in September
1837. They also erected a scythe and edge tool factory across the road from the mill.17 Later,
he lived in the brick building later known as the Wilson Academy.18
Dr. Hull was president of the State Medical Society in 1839 and 1840, and his address (1839)
on “Quackery” was considered one of the finest papers ever delivered before that body.19 In
1840 his address was on “Improvement in Medicine” which was described as “an eminently
sensible, practical and ably written paper proving clearly that Dr. Hull was no anti-progressive
clog upon the wheels of advancing science, but who believed fully in the doctrine of
progress.”20
From 1837 to 1841 he served in the New York State Senate.21 He served in the sixth district,
then comprising nine counties.22 Politically he was first a Federalist, then a Whig, and lastly a
Republican. In a newspaper article written in 1837, he is described as follows:
“While a resident of this county, Dr. Hull was distinguished for his fidelity to his party
[Whig] and devotion to its principles. When others desponded, he did not; when the
hopes of others sank, his were still warm and sanguine, and when others abandoned to
the contest, he kept the banner flying, with the motto of Lawrence in his mouth –
‘don’t give up the ship.’”23
In 1828 and 1852 he was a member of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church.24 He
was a member of the Congregational Church, which at that time was closely united to the

Presbyterian Church. He was admitted to the First Congregational Church in Bridgewater, May
24, 1807.25 In his later years he was president of the Allegany County Bible Society.26
In about 1856 or 1857, Dr. Hull retired from business. In August 1862 he became permanently
disabled when he injured “the neck of the femur within the capsular ligament,” requiring him
to use crutches. In about 1864 his health began to decline, and he was eventually confined to
his room.27 He died 27 Jun 1865, surviving his wife who had died 4 May 1858.28 They are
buried in Lot 516 of the Angelica Cemetery.29 His funeral service was taken from Job 42:5, “I
have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.”30
According to Henry Cookinham, “Dr. Hull was both in the medical societies and in the
legislative bodies a constant and strenuous worker for the advance and purity of the medical
profession.”31 C. M. Crandall writes: “Dr. Hull was in every proper sense a self-made man -the architect of his own fortunes and position. He possessed a remarkably retentive memory,
great perseverance and energy. What he did ‘he did with his whole might.’ His industry was
untiring, his faith unswerving, his integrity unyielding.”32

Second Generation
(1)
LUCIA HULL (Laurens Hull) was born 29 Nov 1804 in Bridgewater, NY.36 She was
admitted to the First Congregational Church in Bridgewater, 9 May 1819. She was dismissed
from this church 27 Sep 1829, having left for Sidney, NY.37
On 9 Aug 1826, she married Rev. John Berrien Fish, in Bridgewater, NY. He was born
23 Jul 1794, in Connecticut Farms, NJ, the son of Rev. Peter Fish and Hannah Hankinson. In
June 1835 she became ill with “some disease of the liver that afterwards affected her lungs.”38
She was not in her right mind during much of her illness. An account of her last illness was
written by her husband. She died 1 Jul 1836,39 at age 31, and is buried in the Robinson
cemetery, on the main road, west of Hartwick, NY.40
Her gravestone has the following inscription, written by her husband:
And is this death, ‘Tis victory to die,
I mount on wings, I soar above the sky,
On the full glory of the Godhead gaze,
With saints and angels kindling in his rays.
Despite her mental instability in the last year of her life, Rev. Fish wrote to his children,
“Your mother was a woman of good common sense, of constant piety, of warm heart in the
friendships of life; and she bore her long protracted illness with a meek and quiet spirit.”
Rev. Fish married a second time, to Nancy Stevens, and had three more children. He
died 23 Dec 1869, in Catskill, NY, and is buried in the Catskill Village Cemetery.41

(2) DELIA HULL (Laurens Hull) was born 27 Jul 1807, probably in Bridgewater, NY. She
married Milton Johnston. He was born 18 Sep 1800, and was the son of Col. Witter Johnston
and Jane C. Campbell.42 They lived in Sidney Plains, NY. In 1846, he is listed as a Postmaster
in Sidney Plains.43 Delia died 30 Apr 1882;44 and Milton died 8 Apr 1890. They are buried in
the Pioneer Cemetery, Sidney, NY. 45

(4) JULIA HULL (Laurens Hull) was born 25 Jun 1811, in Bridgewater, NY.47 She married James
Benham, 20 Mar 1833, in Bridgewater, NY. They lived in Angelica, NY. James was born 31 Dec
1806 in Bridgewater, NY. He was the son of James Benham and Sarah Sedgewick. According
to his obituary, he was a resident of Angelica for 30 years, having come from Rushford in the
spring of 1853, and remaining until November 1881. “Altho' never prominent in business or
political circles, yet his influence was felt, and he was universally respected as a man of the
strictest integrity, fidelity and high moral principle…. He was the kindest of neighbors, the most
affectionate of parents, the most thoughtful of husbands.” He was an active member of the
Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon, an elder, and a member of the choir.
Julia died at her home, in Angelica, NY, on 13 Nov 1879;48 of pneumonia,49 and is buried
in Angelica, NY.50

From an unknown newspaper:
…Mrs. Benham was converted about the age of eighteen, and united with the
Presbyterian Church of Bridgewater. For the last twenty-five years she has been a
resident of Angelica. Although in feeble health, she was active in the service of Christ,
and was at the time of her death President of the Ladies' Missionary Society of this
church. Her final illness lasted only eight days. From the first she felt that the end was
near, and rejoiced in its approach. To her niece who asked “Do you want to leave us?
Don't you love us any more?” she replied “I am going to more than I am leaving,” and
added that it was strange to her that we should wish her to stay. To a friend who was
bidding her farewell, she said “This is the happiest day of my life; I am going home.” Her
disease was pneumonia. At times she was distressed for breath, but in the intervals of
ease she talked much. When friends called she would not have them sent away. “I am
beyond the reach of help or harm,” she said; “let them come in.” She gave directions for
the disposition of her effects, for her funeral, and for her family, after she should be
gone; and all so calmly that it did not seem like a death-scene. There was neither
trepidation nor ecstasy. Her preparation for this event had been made long before. She
had often expressed the wish that her death might be like her mother's. This wish was
granted. Having left farewell messages to absent ones, and taken leave of those who
stood about her, she closed her eyes and gently “fell on sleep.” Besides her husband,
she leaves two sons; Mr. A.M. Benham of San Francisco, and Mr. H.L. Benham of
Cincinnati. E. F. FISH Angelica, Nov. 21, 1879.
After Julia’s death, James went to live with his son Azel, in Oakland, CA, in November 1881.
James died 21 Jul 1883 in Oakland.

LAURENS HULL JR. (Laurens Hull) was born 11 May 1813,51 and died 1 Mar 1842, in
Nashville, TN.52 He graduated from Union College, in 1836.53 His death is noted in the Albany
Argus, 18 Mar 1842: “At the residence of H. J. Anderson, near Nashville, on the 1st inst., of
consumption, Laurens Hull, Jr. attorney at law, late of the city of New York, and son of the Hon.
Laurens Hull, of Allegany County, N. York.” He is buried in the Nashville City Cemetery.54

AZEL BACKUS HULL55 (Laurens Hull) was born 16 Jul 1817 and died 4 Mar 1889, in
Oakland, CA. He married Ruth Ann Newcomb. She was born 1 May 1819, in Surrey, NH,56 and
they were married 30 Jun 1840, in Rome, NY.57 It is stated in Mason’s Hull genealogy that
there were no children.
In 1850, Azel and Ruth lived with Laurens and Dorcas Hull, in Angelica, NY. Ruth was
born in about 1818 in New York, according to the census.
In 1860, Azel lived in Angelica, NY,58 with his parents, Laurens and Dorcas Hull.
They had no biological children, but adopted a child, Bertha C. Hull, who became the
wife of George Pratt. Newspaper articles in 1891 document Bertha’s divorce from Mr. Pratt,
and state that she was an adopted child. An article in the New York Times states that George
Pratt shot a man named Louis L. Bromwell, badly wounding him, due to suspected
improprieties with his wife, which she later denied.59
In 1883 he was vice-president of the Consolidated Virginia Mining Company – the
president being his nephew Charles H. Fish.60
A death notice stated: “Azel B. Hull, a well-known mining man of San Francisco, died
(on the?) 5th in Oakland. He was a native of New York and about 70 years of age. He came to
this (Coast?) in 1876 and has since then been officially connected with the Comstock mining
companies of (?) Bay.” – Salt Lake City Tribune, 14 Mar 1889. In another obituary it states
that he was once Mayor of Cedar Rapids.61

MARCUS AMBLER HULL62 (Laurens Hull) was born 26 Dec 1819, in Bridgewater, NY. He
married Susan C. Ackerman, 5 Sep 1848.63 She is said to have been from Allen, NY,64 and was
born 8 Jan 1824. He settled in Pike, NY, in 1856 “and for several years had a woolen mill
there.”65 He later moved to Arcade, NY,66 where he was a well-known manufacturer. “He was
elected to the Legislature in 1869, and re-elected in 1870. In 1873 he was appointed inspector

of customs for the district of Niagara, port of Suspension Bridge .”67 He is listed on the 1880
census,68 in Arcade, NY, with occupation “Dept. Coll. Customs,” and lived with his wife Susan,
son Laurens, and daughter Mary D. Elliot.
The following is taken from: Life sketches of executive officers and members of the
legislature, Volume 3:
“Mr. Hull who represents the county of Wyoming is one of the quiet but efficient
workers of the Assembly.… He was engaged in the successful prosecution of the
business of manufacturing woolen goods for twenty five years in Pike where he now
resides and then withdrew establishing himself as a dealer and engaging in the
occupation of farming. He cast his first vote for Henry Clay and remained a Whig until
the organization of the Republican party. Through the justifiable favor of his fellow
citizens he is now serving his sixth term in the Board of Supervisors rendering important
service to his constituents. He was a member of Assembly in 1869 serving on the
committees on Insurance and Trade and Manufactures. He is this session a member of
the Committee on Cities.”
Susan died 12 Jun 1885. Marcus Ambler Hull died 10 Jan 1891, in Chicago, at the
residence of his daughter Mary Shaw.69 Marcus and Susan are both buried in the Arcade Rural
Cemetery, Arcade, NY.70

daughter of Thomas and Martha Renwick.75 Although early records show her as “Isabella,” in
later life she was known as “Isabel.”
Henry and Isabel lived in Belvidere, NY (1865). In 1870, he is listed on the census as a
farmer. The family moved to Cedar Rapids, IA, by 1873.76 The family is listed there in 1880, at
which time his occupation is listed as “packing house employee.” Henry died 19 Apr 1896, and
is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, IA.77 In 1900 Isabel (listed on the census as
Mrs. H. D. Hull) was living with William and Julia Ross, and Margery Hannegan, 12. She died 9
Aug 1905, in Cedar Rapids, and is also buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

(10) EMILY BRACE FISH (Lucia Hull, Laurens Hull) was born 4 Sep 1827,78 in Canterbury, NY.79
Although she was only nine years old when her mother died, she “mothered” the younger
children for several years. Edward Fowler Fish often spoke of his gratitude to her for her selfdenying care in his childhood.80 She lived in Angelica, NY, for many years where she was a
pianist and music teacher. In January 1861 she sailed for Central America, stopping in Panama
for a week before spending more than a year in La Union, El Salvador. She was a music and
language tutor there, and stayed in the home of Dr. Livingston, the American Consul.81
In 1864 she taught music in Bordentown, NJ.82 Emily was an amateur artist as well; an
1877 diary entry describes her as having painted a picture by the “new photo-alto-relico
process.”83 According to Henry Brown, she spent her last years in New York state.84 She is
listed on the 1900 census, as a boarder, living in Rochester, NY. She died 19 May 1906,85 and is
buried in the Carpinteria Cemetery.86
(11) REV. EDWARD FOWLER FISH (Lucia Hull, Laurens Hull) was
born in Monticello,87 Sullivan County, NY, 23 Sep 1828.88 In an
account of his life he wrote: “My preparation for college began
under the Rev. Ely Burchard, who lived on his farm a mile from
Waterville, Oneida Co., NY. My home was at Sangerfield, a mile
south of the village. Afterward I was at the Waterville Academy
and still later at Oxford Academy, in Chenango Co.” In 1845 he
entered Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, where he reports his

conversion as having occurred in his junior year.89 He graduated in 1848.90
“After leaving college, I spent four years in teaching and traveling. Entered Lane
Theological Seminary in Sept. 1852 and spent three years in the regular course. In 1855 I
visited Boston and was accepted as a foreign missionary by the A.B.C.F.M. but went back to
Lane to spend a year as instructor in Hebrew. During the winter vacation I met with an
accident, the breaking of a ligament in my left ankle, which resulted in a severe sickness that
unfitted me for going abroad. So I entered the Home Missionary service.”91
Edward Fowler Fish married Anna Johnson Hinsdale at Iowa City, IA, 6 Sep 1856. The
officiating minister was a friend, Rev. Peter S. Van Nest.92 She was born 21 Aug 1830,93 in a
farmhouse near Le Roy, Genesee County, NY.94 She was the daughter of Elizur Hinsdale and
Hannah Johnson.95 She attended the Le Roy Female Seminary and graduated about 1850.96 In
1857 the school became Ingham University, the first women's university in the United States.97
It is apparent from letters that she was a cheerful and warm-hearted woman.
Having been licensed by the Scioto Presbytery in 1854 at Chillicothe, OH, and ordained
at Mount Vernon, IA, in February 1857, Rev. Fish began his work as a home missionary. This
was soon interrupted by poor health, however. In Nov 1858, “though still feeble in health,
[he] took charge of the church of Panama, NY.”98 In March 1860, while at Panama, he was
exposed, on horseback, to a damp snowstorm, which resulted in bronchitis and a persistent
cough.99
Later he spent a year and a half as superintendent of public schools in Lancaster, OH,
where he had 14 teachers and 800 pupils under his charge.100 Starting in about August 1862,101
he spent two years in teaching at Marietta College. His daughter Lucia later wrote that “after
his dreams of life as a foreign missionary, father could not be satisfied with a life so
comfortable as that in Marietta (which suited my mother exactly) and so resigned and went as
a Home Missionary to the wilds of northern Wisconsin in the Green Bay region.”102 In
September 1864, he went to Stevens Point, WI.103 He “preached two years to the New School

church of Stevens Point, and the Old School church of Plover.”104 He was the first pastor at
Stevens Point.105
Being the wife of a minister, Anna was undoubtedly very involved in church and in
supporting the work of her husband. In a letter written to the Stevens Point Journal in 1895,
she recalled her experiences, 30 years earlier, of helping to fix and paint the church, which had
been in disrepair.106
Rev. Fish also preached at Columbus, WI,107 and then Carbondale, IL, before moving to
Du Quoin, IL, in 1871. He began as the stated supply at the Presbyterian church in Du Quoin
on 26 Nov 1871, and was installed there as pastor, 15 Dec 1872.108 The family lived in Du
Quoin for seven years. In December 1877, Edward was thrown from his buggy and again had
to resign from preaching. In February 1878, he left Du Quoin, “for Denver, Colorado Springs,
and possibly California.”109 From 1879 to 1881, he was at a spa in Clifton Springs, NY,
undergoing various treatments. His brother Charles gave him financial support during these
years and at other times of need.110
By April 1881 he was well enough to resume preaching at Franklinville, NY. There his
sermons included a memorial service for assassinated President Garfield. After about a year
he resigned, due to divisions in the church. “The year of suspense and homelessness that
followed was one of the most trying of my life,” he wrote.111
He went to California in Dec 1882.112 There he preached at Gilroy,113 San Pablo,114 and
Carpinteria (1887-1890).115 They had apparently had returned to Evanston, IL, to be near their
daughter Lucia. Anna Hinsdale Fish died at ten o'clock in the morning, 13 Dec 1898,116 in

Evanston, IL. She probably had cancer.117 Her funeral was conducted December 14 at the
home of Charles and Lucia Neely, in Evanston.118 She is buried in the Rosehill Cemetery in
Chicago.119
On the 1900 census, he is listed as a clergyman, living with his son Edward H. Fish, in
Brooklyn Township, Alameda County, CA.120 Rev. Edward Fowler Fish died 20 Jan 1906, in
Evanston121, and is buried in the Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago.122
He wrote: “I have been hampered all my life by disease. Yet the Lord has made no
mistake. Goodness and mercy have followed me all my days. I can truly say that these last
days of infirmity and suffering have been the best days of my life. For every trial there is
compensation and there is no one with whom I would exchange places.”123
Rev. Edward Fowler Fish was a strong advocate of temperance, and spoke out against
such things as Sabbath-breaking and dancing. According to his daughter Lucia, “Father was
very strict, but never, as I realize later, narrow. And his strictness was so tempered with loving
kindness, and his gentle, unfailing love, that it was accepted willingly, without question or
resentment.”124 “One of my dearest pictures of my father,” Lucia wrote, “is as I have seen him
so often Sabbath mornings, his white linen and vest without a spot or wrinkle . . . his eyes
looking so blue, his hair so brown and wavy, sitting in the sunlight, reading the Bible.”125

Later that day a prospector asked if someone could write a description of his mining claim.
Charles volunteered and his ability to write soon led to a job in the Recorder's office. He
returned east in 1855.
Early in 1857 he came to California via the overland route. He traveled with a man
named Steven Olmstead, whom he had known when he was first in California. Their horses
died after drinking the alkali water of the Humboldt Sink, and the men had to continue on foot
across the desert. Charles became deranged, but Olmstead led him west to the Truckee River.
They arrived in Reno after walking 100 miles.
Charles conducted a successful Mercantile business in Placerville from 1857 until 1862.
In the fall of 1862 he resigned and took the Wells Fargo stage to Omaha, where he caught a
train. His destination was Cairo, NY, for a family reunion.128
His next move was to Virginia City, Nev., where he became the Recorder. Mark Twain
arrived in Virginia City at about the same time. Charles rode in the lead carriage with the
mayor to the auction of the famous sack of flour (mentioned in Mark Twain's Roughing It).129
Charles became a member of the Virginia City Quartet.130 His niece Lucia Neely wrote: “He was
much beloved for his genial disposition and was a sweet singer…. He was one of a band of
singers in those rough days and was, I am sure, a civilizing and genializing influence.”131
He and his brother Thomas acquired land in Carpinteria in the mid 1860s. He also
owned an orange ranch in San Bernardino. He married Kate Beaumont, 28 Sep 1864,132 in San
Francisco. She died 12 Sep 1865, probably as the result of complications of childbirth.133 His
second wife was Martha Ann Warner, whom he married 25 Jul 1867, in Sacramento.134 She
was born in September 1845 in Illinois,135 and was the daughter of Louis Warner and Eliza
Paige.136
Charles traveled to Nicaragua in 1866, with a friend, Joseph McGuire. In 1869, he rode
out of Reno by train, to Promontory Point, Utah, for the driving of the golden spike.
In the early 1870s he was offered the job of secretary of the Consolidated Virginia
Mining Company. By 1875 the firm was grossing $1.5 million a month -- the greatest silver
strike in American history. The next year the offices were moved to San Francisco, and Charles
became president of the company. The mine dividends dropped off rapidly to about $1 million
per year by 1900, but there were lumber, water and real estate interests. Charles never
acquired a sizable estate. His money went to his family, the San Anselmo Academy, to the San
Rafael Chinese Y.M.C.A., and to the foreign missions in Korea, where his only child, Alice,
eventually became a missionary.

The mine owners were aware of Charles' situation. John Mackay suggested an increase
in Charles' salary, but James Fair, a hard-fisted miner said, “it's no use, he would just give it to
some damned mission.” On behalf of the company, Charles acquired a collection of pure
crystalline silver from the California mine that was considered to be the world's most
elaborate display. It was lost, together with the Nevada building, in the 1906 earthquake. He
continued to work until at least 1912, when he was 82 years of age. He died 6 Mar 1914, in
San Rafael, CA, and is buried in the Sacramento City Cemetery.137 Martha died after Charles,
but the date of her death is not given on her gravestone.

(13) THOMAS FLETCHER FISH (Lucia Hull, Laurens Hull) was born 17 May 1832,139 in Chester,
NY.140 He was married to Hester Ann Johnston by Mar 1854.141 She was born 11 May 1833,142
in Chester, NY. According to Henry Brown, “Thomas joined Charles as his assistant in the San
Francisco office. In 1875 he brought his family back to Carpinteria.”143 Later he moved back to
the Bay area. Earlier he had a store and a mill in Cedar Rapids, IA. He was in Wisconsin in
1851,144 and in Iowa by 1857.145
Lucia Neely wrote, “Uncle Tom was less prosperous than Uncle Charlie and less genial
(to children) but he told funny stories and always made us laugh. He lived in Iowa, and
afterwards in California, so we seldom saw him.”146 Hester died 19 Nov 1884, and is buried in
the Carpinteria Cemetery.147 His second wife was Rhoda (Button) Gere,148 whom he married 1
Jun 1886, in Manhattan, NY.149 She was from Batavia, NY, and was born in about 1836,

year old when her mother died, she was raised by her Aunt Julia (Hull) Benham, who lived in
Angelica, NY. She had “admirers many of whom aspired to be lovers,” but she did not marry.158
She lived in Oakland, CA,159 and died in Nov 1913. She is buried in the Mountain View
Cemetery, in Oakland.160
(16) MARY JANE JOHNSTON (Delia Hull, Laurens Hull) was born 19 Mar 1833, in Sidney
Plains, NY. She married John Aldrich 30 May 1855, in Sidney, NY. He was born 23 Feb 1828, in
NY, and was the son of Asa and Mercy (Smith) Aldrich.161 They lived in Nebraska from 18551866, then Cedar Rapids, before moving to Missouri in 1894. According to a Who’s Who entry,

she began temperance work with the Crusade movement and became National vice president
and State president of the W.C.T.U. She joined the non-partisan W.C.T.U. in 1890, becoming
secretary of it evangelical work.162 Another source says, “Mrs. Aldrich signed the temperance
pledge in early childhood during the period of John B. Gough’s career and the Washingtonian
societies. Her active temperance work began during the Temperance Crusade of 1873-74.”163
In 1900, they lived in Columbia Township, near Springfield, MO, with daughter Luta.
John is listed as a farmer.
Mary Jane died 27 Apr 1909, in Sidney Plains, NY. John died 30 Dec 1909, in Unadilla,
NY. She and her husband are both buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery, in Sidney, NY.

(17) LAURENS HULL JOHNSTON (Delia Hull, Laurens Hull) was born 17 Dec 1834, in NY. He
was in the Civil War, in the 2nd Volunteer Colorado Cavalry.164
He married Lettice H. (Willis) Chappell, 17 Sep 1890, in Custer County, ID.165 She was
born 4 May 1851, in West Parishville, NY, and was the widow of a Mr. Chappell.166 She was the
daughter of Charles B. and Lettice Willis.167
They are listed on the 1900 census in “Bay Horse,” Challis, Idaho. The census lists her as
the mother of one child, still living.168 The census lists his occupation as attorney at law.
Lettice was treasurer of the Woman’s Missionary Union of Idaho, in 1900.169
He died 24 Sep 1910; and is buried in Challis, Idaho.170 Lettice had died 18 Jan 1910, and
is also buried in the cemetery at Challis.171

(18) WITTER HENRY JOHNSTON (Delia Hull, Laurens Hull) was born 24 Jul 1837. He married,
first, Malvina (“Mallie”) McBride, 29 Jun 1877.172 She was born 30 Oct 1850.173 She died in
1886.174 He married, second, her sister, Margaretta (“Maggie”) McBride, 2 Aug 1887, in Ft.
Dodge, IA.175 She was the daughter of John McBride and Elizabeth McIvans. She was born in
1857, in Philadelphia, Penn. She died in 1900.176
He was in the Civil War, enlisting on 14 Aug 1862, as a 2nd Lieutenant, in Sidney, NY. He
served in Co. I, New York 144th infantry, and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant 21 Feb 1863, and
to Captain on 18 Nov 1864. He mustered out on 15 May 1865.177
He is listed on the 1885 Iowa state census, in Ft. Dodge, with wife Mollie, son Witter,
and two unrelated people, Agnes H. Mooney, 36, and John C. Mooney, 13.
In 1900, he is listed with son Witter L. Johnson, daughter Mallie W. Johnson, sister Dora
Turner, and servant Phoebe Cheney, 34. He was widowed and his occupation is given as
farmer.178 In 1910, he is listed in Ft. Dodge with daughter Mattie, 21, and sister, Dora H. Turner,

He was president of the Ft. Dodge Library Board, and a member of the Iowa Library
Commission. In an article about the library, it is said:
“In this age when it is said that all worship money and that without money no one can
be respected or accomplish great things; in the mad rush for money and the things
money can buy, the life of Capt. W. H. Johnston is a complete refutation of all this.
Disabled in early life by a rebel bullet, while fighting for his country and his flag he
started into professional life handicapped by this sacrifice for the nation. He has always
been a book lover but he is also a lover of humanity, especially of the young, and this
double love prompted him to establish with the help of a few faithful women who are
always on hand to hold up the hands of a man who would do something for his fellows,
a Circulating Library….
…A mainstay of the church, respected and beloved by all, what a success is his life,
compared to some of the richest men of our town whom nobody cares for, who have
never done a thing for their brothers or for the future…. A portrait of him was painted
by W. A. Reaser and was to be hung in the library.”179
He died 6 Jun 1911, and is buried in the Oakland Cemetery, Ft. Dodge, IA.180

married Arunah Metcalf Turner,182 7 Mar 1871.183 He was the son of Sumner Turner, of Otsego
Co., NY.
According to Mason, they lived in West Superior, WI. Unless I am incorrect about the
identity of her husband, they were divorced or separated, as she is listed on the 1900 and
1910 census living with her brother Witter Henry Johnston, in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. On the 1880
census, she is listed as “widowed” (living with her parents in Sidney, NY), but this seems
unlikely, since A. Metcalf Turner died in 1914.184 She died 6 Feb 1927, and is buried in the
Oakland Cemetery, Ft. Dodge, Iowa.185
Dorcas is listed as a non-graduate in a catalogue of officers and students of Mt. Holyoke
College. Her listing says “m. A. M. Turner 71. Address Mrs. Dora H. J. Turner, Fort Dodge, IA;
Sidney Plains, NY; 65, student Chicago Free Kindergarten Assoc. 91-93, kindergartener West
Superior Wis. 93-97.”
(23) AZEL MORSE BENHAM (Julia Hull, Laurens Hull) was born 21 Mar 1839, in Postdam, NY.
He married Mary Croft, 6 Dec 1865, at La Porte, IN. In 1869 he is listed in an Indianapolis, IN,
city directory under the firm Soehner & Benham, who sold “pianos, organs and melodeons,
stools and covers.” By 1879, he was living in Alameda County, CA.186 On the 1880 census, he is
listed living in Oakland, CA, as a music dealer. According to an advertisement in the Oakland
Tribune, he had a shop at 647 Market St. in San Francisco, where he sold pianos. He died 1
Apr, 1912, in Los Angeles., CA. His ashes were initially held at the Mountain View Cemetery in
Altadena, CA, and were transferred to the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, CA, Lot 20,

28 Aug 1890, in Cincinnati, OH, and is buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.190
From an unknown newspaper: “Death of a Well Known Citizen. Mr. H.L. Benham,
widely known in the piano trade and in musical circles of this city, died this afternoon at 2
o'clock, of brain fever, at his residence, No. 3 Eden Park Terrace. He was seized with the fatal
illness about three weeks ago, and during most of this period was in an unconscious condition.
Mr. Benham for many years was a leading music dealer and publisher of Indianapolis. In this
city he was been with several piano firms, more recently with the Levassor Piano Company, of
which he was secretary and treasurer. A man of kindly and genial disposition, his loss will be
deeply felt by his many friends and acquaintances. The bereaved family consists of a widow
and four children. Mrs. Benham is the daughter of Mr. J.W. Sibley, of Grandin road.”

married, first, Frank Elliot, in 1875. He died in 1876.194 She married, second, Gilbert Bradley
Shaw, 3 May 1885, in Chicago. He was born 12 Aug 1837, in Canandaigua, NY. He graduated
from Genesee College, Lima, NY, in 1860. In 1865 he was engaged in logging and
manufacturing in Wood Co., WI, and came to Chicago in 1869. In 1870 he opened a retail
lumber yard in Kankakee, and later opened other lumber yards. He was at one time president
of the American Trust and Savings Bank, in Chicago.195 In a 1907 newspaper article, he is called
a multi-millionaire.196
Mary died 12 Dec 1910, in Chicago,197 and Gilbert died 13 Apr 1912. Mary and Gilbert
are buried in the Oak Woods cemetery in Chicago.198

amateur singer, as a newspaper account states that he sang “the elaborate tenor obbligato
and solo with superb effect.”209
On the 1910 census, they are listed in Chicago, living with their niece Margery
Hannegan. Julia died 5 Jun 1933, and is buried Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, IA. 210 William

York. She married James Edmund Hannegan,212 28 Oct 1886, in Cedar Rapids, IA. He was born
11 May 1863, in Lafayette, IN,213 and was the son of James E. Hannegan and Alice McEnary. He
was a railroad passenger agent, “railroad tariff expert and former chairman of the
Southwestern Passenger Association.” 214 Frances died 11 Jun 1888 and is buried in the Oak
Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, IA.215 After her death, he remarried Laura -----, and lived in St.
Louis, MO, where he is listed on the 1930 census. He died 14 Nov 1935, in St. Louis, and is
buried in Kankakee, IL.216

Belvedere, NY. He may have been born as “Henry” and changed the name later. He married
Mary Louise Harris, 3 Jun 1891, in Williamsburg, IA. She was born in March 1871, in Iowa.
He was a U.S. Congressman, elected to represent Iowa's 2nd District in the United
States House of Representatives, serving from 1915 to 1925.
“(He) was a five-term Republican U.S. Representative from Iowa's 2nd congressional
district, and Commissioner General of Immigration in the Coolidge and Hoover
administrations…. (He) moved with his parents to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1873…. He was
employed as a clerk and bookkeeper for a grain company. He moved to Palo, Iowa, in
1883, and to Williamsburg, Iowa, in 1884 and engaged in the grain business. He also
engaged in the manufacture of brick and tile. He was president of the Williamsburg
Telephone Co. He served as one of Williamsburg's aldermen from 1887 to 1889, as its
mayor from 1889 to 1901, and as its postmaster from 1901 to 1914. He also served as
president of the Williamsburg Fair Association from 1900 to 1915.
In 1914, Hull was elected as a Republican to represent Iowa's 2nd congressional
district in the U.S. House, defeating Democrat W.J. McDonald. He served in the Sixtyfourth Congress and in the four succeeding Congresses. He was one of only fifty
representatives who voted against the resolution authorizing the United States' entry
into World War I, and one of the few of those fifty to stave off challengers in the
wartime primary and general elections in 1918….
When seeking renomination in 1924, he was defeated in the Republican primary
by Judge F. Dickinson Letts. In all, he served from March 4, 1915 to March 3, 1925. On

of Immigration and served in that position until 1933, when he retired.”217
His first wife Mary died 21 May 1917, in Washington, DC, “after taking poison tablets which
she thought were headache pills.”218 She is buried in Williamsburg, IA.
Harry married Ann Elizabeth Gittins, 21 Jun 1921. She was born 16 Mar 1883, in

(32) CARA D. FISH (Edward Fowler Fish, Lucia Hull, Laurens Hull) was born 13 Aug 1857, in Mt.
Vernon, Iowa. She attended Ingham University, in Le Roy, NY. She married John T. Beem 6
Sep 1879, in Danvers, IL. He was born 23 Aug 1840, in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of Andrew Beem
and Vine McGown. He was the owner and editor of the Du Quoin Tribune. According to the
History of Perry County (1988) Beem was a “picturesque, forceful writer” who “fought battles
on the issues of the day, wielding the printed word like a sharp sword.”220 He had two children,
Della and Loren, by a previous marriage. Cara's marriage to John Beem ended in divorce. He
died 12 Jul 1930, in Du Quoin, and is buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery there.221
She married Samuel Shotwell Hutchins in November 1892. He was born in Canada222 in
about 1848,223 and is said to have been raised by a couple named Pryor (but not adopted).224
He immigrated to the U.S. in 1869 and was naturalized in 1875.225 They lived in Southern
California, at one time in Riverside.226 He had four sons by a previous marriage, Austin, Charles
Foster, Arthur, and William E. Samuel was a rancher and a carpenter. According to his death
certificate, he was also a real estate agent.227 In 1920 the family lived in Eden Township,
Hayward, CA. Census records indicate that his father was born in Wales and his mother in
Canada.228 He died 10 May 1925, in Hayward.229 In 1930, she lived with daughter Lucia, in San
Francisco.230 Cara died 10 Dec 1940,231 in Bell Gardens Sanatorium.232

(33) LUCIA HULL FISH (Edward Fowler Fish, Lucia Hull, Laurens Hull) was born 14 Apr 1859, in
Panama, NY. In 1875 she entered the Western Female Seminary in Oxford, OH. In 1876 she
enrolled in Ingham University in Le Roy, NY, graduating in June 1879. She taught for a year in
the Du Quoin public schools and also gave piano lessons. On 9 Sep 1880, she married Charles
Gracchus Neely in St. Louis, MO. He was born 11 Jun 1855, in Benton, IL, the son of Dr. Isaac
Montgomery Neely and Mary Catherine Elstun. The family moved to Evanston, IL, in 1884.
Charles G. Neely served for one term in the Illinois state legislature, was a lawyer, and later a
circuit court judge. After moving to California in 1910 he taught constitutional history and law
at Pomona College. He died 16 Oct 1930, in Selma, CA, after an automobile accident.
Lucia Neely was a devoted wife and a hard-working homemaker and mother. Diaries
written when her children were young show her as an energetic, busy woman, and a
prodigious seamstress. After her husband died in 1930, she rented rooms to college students including conductor Robert Shaw. She was vitally interested in the events of the day and was
an avid reader. At age 70, she began reading 100 “great books” suggested in an article by Will
Durant. It took her four years. Lucia died 30 Oct 1952, at age 93, in Claremont, CA. She is
buried in the Oak Park Cemetery in Claremont.233 In a letter written to her daughter Charlotte,
a friend said: “She had the kind of personality that makes her vivid and stimulating even
now…for she was lovely to look at, charming to know, intelligent and humorous.”

(34) EDWARD HINSDALE FISH (Edward Fowler Fish, Lucia Hull, Laurens Hull) was born 10 Mar
1863, in Marietta, OH. After living in Wisconsin, the family moved to Du Quoin, IL, in 1871. In
1880 he worked briefly in Du Quoin as a printer with his brother-in-law, John Beem.
On 19 Jul 1898, he married Ada Anna Albert, who was born 11 Sep 1872, in Brownsville,
CA. Ada's mother, Jane Beever, was a native of California and is buried in Coquille, OR. Her
father, Daniel Wesley Albert, was a miner who was born in Ohio. According to Lois Johnston
Fish, Ada was “a great lady who had a heart as big as all outdoors. She thought of everyone
before she ever thought of herself.”
In 1900 Edward H. Fish and his family lived with his father in Brooklyn Township,
Alameda County, CA. He moved to Oregon in 1906. He was a bookkeeper, mainly for lumber
companies. He worked for the Prosper Lumber Co., the A.B. Daly Co. in Marshfield, and the
Vaughn Co. in Coquille, OR.
His daughter, Shirley Wright, wrote: “while we were never rich we never felt poor and
were always proud. My Dad was always very special in my estimation. He had a great love of
music and passed that appreciation to his children.” His wife died 7 Jul 1940. He died of
pneumonia, 14 Feb 1943, at the Knights of Pythias lodge home in Tacoma, WA, and is buried
alongside his wife in the Masonic cemetery in Coquille, OR.235

New York City, the daughter of Herman Barnum Sears and Almira Raymond. The family lived
in Oakland, CA, in 1900,239 and moved to Phoenix, OR, by 1910, where he is listed as a farmer.
Carrie died 1 Apr 1924, in Phoenix, Oregon.240 Theodore is said to have been an invalid for
many years. He died 10 Dec 1927, in Phoenix, and is buried in the Phoenix Pioneer

(41) REV. AZEL HULL FISH (Thomas Fletcher Fish, Lucia Hull, Laurens Hull) was born 20 Mar
1865, in Cedar Rapids, IA. He married Alice Graham. She was born about 1866, in California.
Azel graduated from Union Theological Seminary. In 1904 he wrote a 15-page pamphlet, “Dr.
Carter, Rationalistic Unitarianism and the Vital Doctrines of Evangelical Christianity.”242 He
spoke out in support of S. T. Carter, his friend, who had been accused of certain unorthodox
views.243 Azel was appointed pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Nyack, NY, in 1911. He
was also a college professor.244 In 1920 he lived in Monroe, NY.245 By 1930 he had moved to
New Jersey, where he is listed on the census as headmaster of a school. He died 31 Mar 1949,
in Ridgewood, NJ.

in Carpinteria, CA. Lucia received a B.S. degree from the University of California in 1900 and a
Master's degree from Columbia University in 1903. She went to Korea in 1913 to teach
missionaries' children at the Foreign School in Pyongyang. There she met Samuel Austin
Moffett, whose first wife was Lucia's cousin Mary Alice Fish. They were married 30 Jun 1915.
Moffett was president of Union Christian College in Korea from 1918 to 1928. According to
her obituary “The Moffetts were in sympathy with the Korean independence movement but
took no part in actions against the Japanese government. Nevertheless, the Japanese
threatened in 1936 to kill Dr. Moffett.”246 He escaped and Lucia followed a few months later.
He died 24 Oct 1939, in Monrovia, CA.247 Lucia died 17 Mar 1962, in Oyster Bay, NY.

1860,248 in Nebraska City, NE. He married Corrine May Tackett, 22 Dec 1885, in Shelbyville, IL.
She was the daughter of William J. and Mary J. (-----) Tackett, and was born 23 May 1867, in
Shelbyville.249 They were living in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1905.250 In 1910 he lived in Nebraska
City.
“Mr. Aldrich received his education in the grade and high school at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
During his school days he was interested in rowing and was a member of the Cedar Rapids
Boat Club. He has lived in Nebraska for thirty years. Since 1876, when he became an office
boy, he has been engaged in the packing house business, and today he is vice president and
manager of the Morton Gregson Company at Nebraska City…. In the World War, Mr. Aldrich
was a member of the Nebraska City Home Guards, and was active in Red Cross work.”251
He died 16 Apr 1936, in Nebraska City, NE. He and his wife are buried in the Wyuka
Cemetery, Nebraska City, NE.252

where he spent two years with one of the large railroad systems;
from Pittsburg, PA, where for a year he was in the home office of

in Newark, NJ, where Johnston spent the last year of his life as
credit manager for the Company’s warehouse propositions, there
comes the same heartfelt sensibility of the loss of a personal friend.”
This sketch goes on to say that he “Graduated from Coe College in 1904, joining the
Class of 1906 of Yale College, in the Senior year. During the year 1904-1905 he acted as
secretary to President McCormick of Coe College. In the main he worked his way both at Coe
and at Yale. His death from heart disease occurred at Mountainside Hospital, Montclair, NJ, 29
Jul 1910.” 261 He is buried in the Oakland Cemetery, Ft. Dodge, IA.262

1866, in Minneapolis, Minn. He married Alice Douglas Bradford, 24 Oct 1903.
James is listed on the 1910 census in Chicago but his wife is not listed with him. He was
the founder of the Benham Indian Trading Company. A web page about Los Angeles states,
“Across the street was the building housing the Benham Indian Trading Company, a firm which
was active from about 1903 to 1914, in which latter year it was acquired by the Burns Indian
Trading Company, which then promptly went bankrupt. The company not only sold Indian
souvenirs but also published postcards which had a unique sketchy quality, making them
instantly recognizable.”265
He was the secretary of the Naugle Pole and Tie Company of Chicago. He and his wife
both died 27 Jul 1914, near Lake Forest, IL, “when the automobile in which they were riding
was struck by a fast passenger train on the Chicago & Northwestern railroad.”266 They were on
their way to an operatic performance at Ravinia Park. According to another article, “The car
was struck at a grade crossing on the county line road.” James and Alice are both buried in
Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, CA.267

Henry died 22 Oct 1973, in Prescott, AZ, at age 94. According to his obituary in the
Williams News,277 he was a “well known and respected rancher, railroader, and forest ranger.”
Mr. Benham died Oct. 22 at Yavapai Community Hospital in Prescott where he had been
a patient since June. He was a native of Indiana, but spent his childhood and early youth in
Cincinnati. He headed west in 1900, settling first in New Mexico where he worked as a cowboy
for Will C. Barnes. Barnes later authored the book “Arizona Place Names,” and Benham
assisted Barnes in identifying many area landmarks. In 1907 Mr. Benham went to work for the
Forest Service. He helped with prairie dog control programs in Colorado and was sent to
Arizona in 1909. It was also in 1909 that he married Katherine C. Cunningham, whom he had
met previously in New Mexico. Their first home was at Camp Clover ranger station west of
Williams, where they lived in a log cabin. Benham's ranger district at this time covered 14
townships, and he worked with a partner Willard Sevier. They rode horseback and packed into
every part of their district, mapping and recording canyons, mountains, creeks and springs. The
pay was $75 a month and the men had to feed their own horses. In 1912 Benham
homesteaded a place about four miles south of Williams. In 1918 he went to work for Santa Fe
Railroad. “Just to help out through the winter,” he remarked once. His “helping out” stretched
to 30 years, and he retired from Santa Fe in 1948 after serving as everything “from call boy to
relief agent.” Mr. Benham's wife taught school here for several years. The Benhams were active
in fraternal and church affairs, and for many years the annual St. John's Episcopal Church July 4
barbecue was held at Benham ranch. The family constructed a picnic and recreation area, and
many organizations and families held outings there during the summer months. The Benhams
were active in IOOF and Rebekah lodge, and several years ago Mr. Benham received a 50 year
membership pin from the IOOF lodge. Even in advanced age, Mr. Benham had a young outlook,
and kept active -- going deer hunting with his grandsons when he was well past the age when
most men are taking things easy. He always had a garden, worked many hours gathering and
cutting firewood, and in general retained the life-long habits of a pioneer….

(66) HARRIS BENJAMIN HULL (Harry Edward Hull, Henry Davis Hull, Laurens Hull) was born 23
May 1909, in Williamsburg, IA.324 He married, first, Bernice Stephens, 22 May 1936, in
Washington, D.C.325 This marriage ended in divorce. He married, second, Jeanne Lejeune
Glennon, who died in 1992. Harris B. Hull was a brigadier general in the US Air Force. He
graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business of Economics with
a bachelor of science degree in 1930.
After receiving a commission through the ROTC program, and being in the Army
Reserve, in 1938 he was called to active duty at Langley Field, Va. He helped publicize the
capabilities of the new B-17 Flying Fortress. During World War II, he was both a journalist and
a combat intelligence officer. He continued to work with the Army and Air Force in a similar
capacity after the war. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1960. In 1963, he worked for
a time at NASA, retiring in August 1964. He had also written numerous articles on military
matters, many of them published in the Washington Post.326 He died 29 Jan 1993, at Sibley
Hospital,327 and is buried in the Arlington National Cemetery.328

John H. Neely graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College in June 1905. He had
a strong interest in biology and botany, but decided to study law after his graduation. In 1910
he moved with the family to Pomona, CA. There he opened a law office and was city attorney
of Claremont. Later he practiced law in Pasadena. In April 1913 he was stricken with typhoid
fever, and tuberculosis followed. His mother Lucia Neely wrote, “to a young man in the very
beginning of his career, with all doors apparently opening before him, and full of the joy of life,
such a blow can hardly be estimated.” According to his obituary in the Pomona Progress, “No
one ever came in close contact with John Neely that did not come to like him. He
was…generous, loyal, happy, honorable to the last degree, and richly equipped in mind.”
(74) MARY RUTH NEELY (Lucia Hull Fish, Edward Fowler Fish, Lucia Hull, Laurens Hull) was

studied one semester at the University of California at Berkeley, where she obtained a high
school teacher's credential. In 1911 she began teaching grammar, English, and medieval and
modern history at Claremont High School.

born 12 Jun 1886, in Diagonal, Iowa,351 the son of Alva A. Payne and Emma M. Brown. Claude's
first wife, Lucile Pier, had died after a year or two of marriage.
Claude did office work for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. He became ill, with
encephalitis, and later developed Parkinson's disease and was unable to work for many years.
He died 7 Jul 1949, in San Bernardino Co., CA.
Clara attended Wellesley College and graduated from Northwestern University. She
and her family moved to California about 1925. She received a master's degree from
Claremont College. She taught at a junior high school in Fontana for about 15 years and later
at Chaffey High School and Chaffey College, in Ontario, CA. Among her students were all three
of her children. She retired from Chaffey College in about 1957 and after that time taught
briefly at Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga.

State Normal College and later spent nine years in China in a similar capacity. When she
returned she studied law, graduating from the University of California in 1932. She was
associated with a law firm for a short time, then became supervisor of child welfare and
attendance for the Pomona Schools until her retirement in 1958. She served on the Claremont
city council in the late 1940s. She also taught classes at Claremont Graduate School on laws
relating to children.

was born 28 Feb 1895, in Evanston, IL. She died 22 May 1974, in Silver Spring, MD; and is
buried in Oak Park Cemetery.352 She married Lowell Clark Pratt, 21 May 1918, in Claremont,
CA.
Lowell Pratt was born 31 Dec 1894, in Pomona, CA, the son of Harry Stillman Pratt and
Alice Maud Clark. He received a degree in journalism from Columbia University in 1920. He
was editor and part-owner of the Selma, CA, Enterprise from 1926 to 1947. During World War
II, he spoke out for the rights of Japanese-Americans who had been sent to internment camps.
He wrote a book, A Weekly Miracle, which describes his experiences as editor of the Enterprise.
In 1947 he became the first director of public relations at San Jose State University and taught
journalism there.
She moved with her parents to California in 1910 and graduated from Pomona College
in 1917. She was a member of the War Price and Rationing Board during World War II. She
was a member of the Elementary School Board of Trustees for 14 years. Dorothy and Lowell
Pratt moved to Wheaton, MD, in 1968, to be with their daughter.

and attended the Pyongyang Foreign School. In 1933, she returned to the
Rogue Valley and, skipping her junior year, graduated from Phoenix High
School in 1934. In 1937, at the age of 20, she graduated from Southern
Oregon Normal School (now Southern Oregon University) and was hired to
teach third grade at the Riverside School in Grants Pass…In the 1950's and
60's, Jarvie was involved in Sacred Heart Parish where she served as President
of St. Anne's Altar Society and as a Cub Scout den mother for her sons. For
thirty-five years she served on the Sacred Heart Hospital (later Providence)
Hospital Community Advisory Board and she was a member of the Petunias.
Mrs. Naumes was a very creative person who enjoyed painting, knitting,
antiques, and architecture, but her greatest pleasure, aside from world-wide
travel, was playing bridge, an activity she continued up to her 90th birthday…”

2013, in Santa Barbara, CA. He married Margaret Delphia (“Delle”) Mackenzie. She was the
daughter of Harold B. Mackenzie Sr. and Rachel Geraldine Blanchard. She died 20 Jan 2010, in
Santa Barbara, CA.
Howard was a graduate of Wheaton College in 1939, and later from Northwestern
University Medical School. They moved to New Orleans in 1943, and during World War II he
was a medical officer for a flotilla of ships in the South Pacific. Following the war, he was a
missionary briefly in China and then in Korea, where he was superintendent of Dongsan
Hospital in Taegu. After moving to Illinois and taking a residency at Hines V.A. Hospital, he and
Delle returned to Korea in 1956, where he remained working at the hospital in Taegu until
1993. Upon retirement they moved to Carpinteria, CA. Howard engaged in competitive senior
tennis and won a number of championships.378
Delle graduated from Wheaton College in 1938. She assisted her husband, helping
raise funds for the hospital.

Hull) was born 2 Dec 1883,379 in Galva, IL.380 He died 23 May 1940, in San Mateo, CA, and is
buried in the San Francisco National Cemetery.381 In 1900, he lived with his parents in St. Louis,
MO. In1905, he was a clerk, living in Ramsey, MN. He married (1st) Kathleen Pryor, separated
in 1914; (2nd) Lillian Dombrow, 28 Aug 1920, in Oak Park, IL, after a courtship of less than a
week (see below). He married (3rd) Esther Charlotte Carlson, 7 Sep 1920, in Great Falls, MT.
In 1910 he was stationed on the USS Bainbridge in the Philippines He was first an
Ensign and then a Lieutenant in World War I. He later settled in Chicago, where he married
two women within 10 days.382 He had posed as a wealthy retired Lt. Commander, and wrote
bad checks totally $4,000383 384 He stated to reporters that he had “no recollection” of his
marriage to Lillian Dombrow, and that he had been drunk. He was charged with bigamy, but
the charges were subsequently dropped. In 1920, Lillian divorced him, receiving $800 in
alimony, despite having been together for only 3 days. He stated, “The liquor got me. It made
me plumb drunk all the time I was in Chicago. Don’t remember any weddings.”385 In 1930, he
is listed on the census living in Flint, MI, and was divorced. His occupation was listed as
salesman.
(99) CARL MILTON ALDRICH JR. (Carl Milton Aldrich, Mary Jane Johnston, Delia Hull,
Laurens Hull) was born 30 Apr 1889, in Shelbyville, IL. He died 30 Aug 1962, in San Diego, CA,
and is buried in the Ft. Rosencrans National Cemetery, San Diego. He married Floy Agnes
Graves in about 1914. She was born 15 Aug 1897 (or 1898) in Clearmont, MO, the daughter of

Hagerstown MD. In 1930 they lived in San Francisco, moving to Hagerstown in about 1936.
During World War I he was a flying cadet.
Claren E. Duke graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1927. During World War II, he
commanded the submarine, USS Grouper. He had also been Executive Officer of the USS
Pennsylvania BB-38, from January to October 1945. He was promoted to Rear Admiral. He

Henry earned a degree in Industrial Arts from Oregon State University. After his second
marriage he moved to Colorado, where he leased and operated a gold mine. In 1946 he
returned to Arizona, and worked for the railroad, as well as engaging in the carpentry business
with a friend. “He worked on rebuilding the London Bridge in Lake Havasu City. He also
worked on the remodeling of the El Tovar Lodge at the Grand Canyon. After he retired in
1980, he continued to work with wood.”400

Obituary of Dr. Laurens Hull
(This obituary is found in Transactions of NY State Medical Society, 1867, and was written by C.
M. Crandall, M.D. It is available at the National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, MD)
Inasmuch as no fitting tribute to the memory of one whose life ever exhibited the highest
virtues that should adorn the medical profession, has as yet appeared in the published
Transactions of the Medical Society, I have prepared the brief and imperfect sketch which I
trust will be received by the family and numerous friends of the deceased in the spirit in which
it is offered --not as being what it should be, but as the best I can accomplish under the
circumstances.
Laurens Hull, M.D., was born in Woodbury, Conn., June 6, 1779. His father was Dr. Titus Hull
of that town. The attention of young Laurens was directed early to medical subjects, from the
fact that from his minority, his health was extremely delicate, and even so late as his 32nd year,
he had frequent attacks of haemoptysis.418 It was on this account that he determined to make
the science of medicine his study and his occupation. His early education was limited, but he
made the best possible use of the ordinary advantages of a common school, to which was
added some 21 days under a private tutor, which completed his preparatory instruction. At
the age of 19, he entered the office of Dr. David Hull419 of Fairfield, Conn., remaining there
about 2 years. He received his diploma as a Doctor of Medicine in 1802, and soon after
removed to Augusta, Oneida County, NY, where he entered the office of Dr. Amos G. Hull,420
and continued his medical studies.
In 1803, he was married to Dorcas Ambler of Bethlem, Conn., by Rev. Azel Backus. In
September, 1804, he removed to Bridgewater, Oneida County, and commenced the practice of
medicine on his own account. In 1806, he took part in the organization of the Oneida Co.
Medical Society. Of the members present at that organization, Dr. Hull was the only survivor
in 1864. In 1817, he was a delegate from Oneida County to the State Medical Society. In 1824,
he was elected a permanent member of this Society. In 1826, he was elected Fellow of the
University, and in 1827, received the honorary degree of Doctor of Medicine from the Regents.
During the same year, and also the year following, he was Vice President of the State Medical
Society.
Dr. Hull was President of the State Medical Society in the years 1839 and 1840. His annual
address in the former year was on the subject of "Quackery," and it may be boldly asserted
that there are few papers in the published Transactions of the Society showing a more logical

mind and a clearer view of the subject treated of. Those members of the Society who have the
volume of the Transactions for 1839, will find themselves well repaid by perusing it. His
subject the following year was "Improvement in Medicine," an eminently sensible, practical
and ably written paper proving clearly that Dr. Hull was no anti-progressive clog upon the
wheels of advancing science, but who believed fully in the doctrine of progress.
Although the subject of this memoir achieved much in the noble profession to which he
devoted the best part of his active life, accomplishing enough to satisfy a moderate ambition,
he also won triumphs in civil and practical life. In 1813, and again in 1825, he was elected a
member of the Assembly from Oneida County, filling the position with credit to himself, and to
the satisfaction of his constituents. In 1816, he was a delegate to the first State convention
held in this state to nominate a governor and lieutenant governor. In the year 1836, he
removed to Angelica, Allegany County, and became interested in manufacturing pursuits,
pretty much abandoning the practice of medicine. In 1837, he was elected State Senator from
the Sixth district, then comprising nine counties. This position he filled with great credit.
Those who were associated with him in senatorial duties and in the court for the correction of
errors, of which Senators were then, ex officio, members, bear testimony to the zeal and
fidelity with which he discharged every public duty, carrying with him in the responsible
position he had been called to fill, the same steady virtue and unbending integrity that had
ever characterized his private life.
About 1856-57, Dr. Hull retired from active business, hoping to spend the remainder of his
days in the quiet walks of domestic life. In May, 1858, he was greatly afflicted by the death of
his estimable wife after a union of nearly 55 years. In August, 1862, he met with a severe
accident, by which he fractured the neck of the femur within the capsuler ligament, thus
rendering him permanently disabled, and sadly interfering with his previously active habits,
and dooming him to the use of crutches. Though a severe trial to one of his disposition and
activity, he bore his affliction with a patience and fortitude alike remarkable and
commendable.
During the years 1864-65, the Doctor's health began to decline more rapidly, and he was
finally confined to his room. With the failure of his physical energies, his mental faculties
gradually grew weak, his mind frequently wandering, dwelling much upon friends and scenes
in the long past. On his 86th birthday, however, he conversed rationally and clearly for some
hours with his family and friends, listened attentively to the reading of a letter from Dr. Mccall,
of Utica,421 an old and valued friend, and soon after sank into delirium which continued till an
hour or two previous to his death, which occurred June 27, 1865.
Dr. Hull was a firm believer in the truths of Christianity, and was ever able to give "a reason for
the hope that was in him." He united with the Congregational Church soon after his marriage,
and at the time of his death, and for several years previous, he was president of the Allegany

County Bible Society. He was always a friend and contributor to the various benevolent
operations of the time. Politically, he was first a Federalist, then a Whig, and lastly, a
Republican. He was gratified in the often expressed and cherished desire of his heart, to live
long enough to see the great rebellion crushed, and the Federal Union preserved. The interest
he took in the State Medical Society is known to all the older members, who will bear
testimony to the fidelity and zeal with which he labored in the Society and in the Senate to
promote its interests.
Dr. Hull was in every proper sense a self-made man -- the architect of his own fortunes and
position. He possessed a remarkably retentive memory, great perseverance and energy.
What he did, he "did with his whole might." His industry was untiring, his faith unswerving, his
integrity unyielding. As a physician, he performed every duty his position imposed, as a
politician in public life, he was animated by the same high purposes; in private life, his virtues
shone conspicuous; as a Christian, he was devoted and faithful, dying with all its hopes of a
blessed immortality. Few men, starting out upon a journey of life with the same limited
advantages, have filled so many positions of honor and trust, and finished up so perfect a life.
May we all, while honoring his virtues, emulate his example.
