1 Old Girls Association Policy on Obituaries And Obituaries for the last Year as at 23 June 2014 We can no longer commit to including obituaries in the OGA newsletter unless space permits. Instead the Committee will endeavour to record obituaries of former students and staff on the website for a period of 12 months from the date of death. We can only record obituaries if we are notified of them by a relative or if we are able to verify information in a published death notice. We apologise in advance if we miss recording an obituary. Old Girls from 1948-1952 will remember Rosemary as the girl who wrote a poem about her time in Bosnia doing aid work. This poem she recited at the dedication of the "Green Room" in the Raye Freedman Art Centre in Memory of Margaret Johnston, Headmistress. Isobel Maxwell-Cameron, B Sc Otago 2010 – died 11 January 2014 in Manchester, England while doing Organic Chemistry research at Manchester University; Isobel’s great grandmother was Joyce Bell nee Wakelin who won a University Scholarship and was Dux at EGGS in 1928 and a teacher at EGGS in the 1950-60s; Isobel’s grandmother is Dr Haydn Cameron nee Bell who attended EGGS from 1952-56; her mother Priscilla Cameron attended EGGS in 1976. Natalie Doreen Martin nee Allen, formerly Deed: died in early January 2014 aged 87 years; Natalie was in 3AM in 1941. Barbara Farnsworth Heslop nee Cupit : died 20 December 2013; Barbara was in 3A and attended EGGS from 1938-41; she was Emeritus Professor, CBE, MD, FRC Path, FRACS. (Betty) Elizabeth Perrot Haslam nee Warren: died in England in December 2013, aged 101 years; Betty attended EGGS from 1925-29 and was Head Girl in 1929. Until her death she was our oldest living Head Girl; her sister was Ruth (Mary) Chamberlin and her niece Mary Chamberlin attended EGGS from 1950-54. Passed Away November 2013 Veda Rigden Dip.F.A. (Art STAFF 1951-67): died 29 November 2013, in Australia; when Veda retired from EGGS she went to New Guinea as a Missionary. After this she came back to Waiheke Island to live with her sisters Dulcie and Noue. She later she lived with her Missionary Colleague Thea in Australia; Miss Rigden took Epsom Girls to Christian Camps at Maungawhai Heads; Gay Bates (nee Taylor 1958) remembers well someone leaving a gate open and the cows visiting the tents in the middle of the night and rubbing their backs on the guy ropes!. Pamela Irene Barry nee McMillan: died 8 November 2013 on her 72nd birthday; Pamela was in 3BL and attended EGGS from 1955 – 1957; her sister is Sue Kaars nee McMillan who attended from 1959 - 1961. Gladys Annie (Glad) Gillatt (Shuker): died 12 November 2013; Glad attended EGGS in 1937; she was a WAAC Gunner in W.W.II. Nancy Ethelwyn Keal nee Buckrell: died 4 September 2013 aged 88 years at Paraparaumu; Nancy was formerly of Takapuna; she was in 3C and attended EGGS from 1939 – 1942; her sister is Margaret Whaley nee Buckrell who attended EGGS 1938 - 1940. Passed Away May 2013 JGG-012217-6-97-V1 5 Elaine Shandra Macfarlane nee Lewis; died 29 May 2013; Elaine was in 3BL in 1960 and attended EGGS until 1964; she was the daughter late Rona Lewis nee Dyer and sister of Dorothy Schoen nee Lewis who was at EGGS from 1955 – 58; Elaine had a long association with Plunket being National Manager of "Plunket Line". Onah Redpath BA: died peacefully on 27 May 2013 at Onewa Lodge Rest Home, aged 92 years; Onah attended EGGS from 1935 – 1939 and was on the staff from 1951 to 1976; she attended Auckland University and then travelled with Dorothea Franchi (EGGS Staff & Harpist); Onah studied the violin in England and played in the Auckland String Orchestra under Georg Tintner; she was a member of the Auckland Camellia Society and travelled with Joy Carter overseas to many garden conferences; also with Joy Carter she was a member of the Trefoil Guild (Girl Guides); Onah had lived at 41 Maungakeikei Ave from the age of four, when the family had left Waihi; her cousin Beth Campbell attended EGGS from 1945 3B; Onah was an Honorary Life Member of the OGA. Joan Shirley Chapple CNZM: died 22 May 2013; Joan was in 5A in 1949 and was House Captain of “Hapai" in 1950 and a Prefect in 1951; she trained as a Doctor and became a well known Hand Surgeon at Middlemore Hospital; she lived at Karaka Bay, St Heliers; a memorial service for Joan was held at the Girl Guides Hall, Kinsale Street, Glendowie on 8 June. (Dawn) Catherine Margaret Dawn Dobson nee Aburn formerly La Trobe: died 12 May 2013 aged 92 years; Dawn was in 3C 1934; her daughters also attended EGGS - Jennifer La Trobe, (1959- 62), Cathy La Trobe (1964 – 67), Pru La Trobe (1969 – 73), as did her stepdaughters Vicky Buckland-Pinnock nee Dobson (1967 – 70) and Lesley Dobson (1961 64). Jasminder Kaur: died suddenly on 10 May 2013; Jasminder was a current Year 11 student at EGGS and the daughter of Telvir Singh and Manpreet Kaur of Papatoetoe. Passed Away April 2013 (Cherie) Geraldine Isabelle Courtenay Devliotis nee Love: died on 23 April 2013; Cherie was in 4BM in 1946 and attended EGGS until 1948; she wrote "Dancing with Delight Footprints from the Past” a book about dance and dancers of early 20th Century in Auckland. (A copy is held in the School library); Cherie's sister is Charmaine James nee Love who attend EGGS 1953 - 55. Gwenyth Henrietta Hackett: died 20 April 2013 at the age of 101 years; Gwyneth was a very proud EGGS Old Girl although only there for one year! Last year she was sent an EGGS soft toy Lion which her granddaughters named Arney after Arney Road where she lived while at School. Arney was a great talking point especially when other Old Girls visited Mum. Aroha Lola Daniels nee Kelly-Ke Rako (formerly Clayton): died 15 April 2013 at Elmwood Village, Manurewa aged 73 years; Aroha was in 3AL in 1954 and came to EGGS from The Foundation for the Blind; she was originally from Rawene on the Hokianga. Margot Hart nee Friedman MNZM, J.P.: died 12 April 2013 aged 75 years; Margot was in 3CG in 1951. Pamela Margaret de Carteret Telford nee Loudon; died 9 April 2013 aged 88 years; Pam was in 3A in 1938; Pam was a cousin of Miss Loudon the Headmistress at EGGS from 1930 - 1947. JGG-012217-6-97-V1 6 Passed Away March 2013 Hannah Kate de Beer: died suddenly on 2 March 2013 aged 19 years; Hannah attended EGGS from 2007 to 2010 after which she moved to Senior College; during her school years Hannah worked part time at Time Out Books in Mt Eden and was starting a triple conjoint degree at Auckland University this year. Elaine Rae (Robyn) Stewart nee Barker: died unexpectedly on 13 March 2013; Robyn was in 3A and attended EGGS 1945-1949; she held a BSc and was on the staff at EGGS from 1970 - 1987. She was Auckland Secondary Tennis Champion and EGGS Tennis Captain and a Prefect in 1949; her mother Ada Baker nee Harvey attended EGGS 1918 - 1919. Marjorie Jessie Tyer nee Williamson: died 25 March 2013 at Elmwood Hospital aged 84 years; Marjorie was in 3AM in 1943. Passed Away February 2013 Winifrid (Win) Maud Penman: died 27 February 2013 aged 87 years; Win was on the staff at EGGS from 1961 – 65; Win was the sister of the late Joan Aimer nee Penman who attended EGGS from 1936 – 40 and the aunt of Jane Aimer (EGGS 1970 -74), Dr Margaret Aimer (EGGS 1973 -77) and Anne Chappaz (EGGS 1975-79). Shirley Ann Soppet: died 26 February 2013 as a result of a farm accident at Maramaru; Shirley was in the Hostel and was in 3DG in 1962. Her sister in law is Doreen Pritchard nee Soppet. Betty Joy Barris nee Taylor: died 14 February 2013 aged 88 years; Betty was in 3A 1938. Passed Away December 2012 Julie Helen Ovenden nee Connor: died 30 December 2012 aged 71 years; Julie was in 3AL in 1954; she had served on the Committee of Auckland Girl Guides, Mt Albert area for many years. Leila Beatrice (Betty) Simms nee Cobb: died 29 December 2012; Betty was in 3AM in 1939 and attended EGGS until 1941. Himemaru (Maru) Constance Good nee Brown; died 22 December 2012 aged 105 years; Maru was in 3ME and attended EGGS from 1921 to 1922; her cousins Jocelyn Fowler nee Hicks (1975 – 1979) and Penelope Hicks (1976) also attended EGGS. Nancye Gardner Williams Nee Raines: died 21 December 2012; Nancye was in 3A and attended EGGS from 1941 – 1944 during WWII; she was a keen tennis player and golfer at the Huapai and Titirangi Golf Clubs; her daughter Judy Insull also attended EGGS from 1976 – 1980. Professor Dr Beryl Overton Howie QSO, DSc Otago, FRCS, FRCRG, FRACOG died 1 December 2012 aged 88 years; she was in 3A and attended EGGS 1938 – 1942; her name is on the EGGS Honours Board (1942); from 1959 she was a Professor at Ludhiana Medical School, Punjab serving for 22 years with the New Interserve Mission; she was the recipient of an EGGS Founders Award in 2004 and speaker at the dinner; Dr Howie was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Otago University in 2008; her contribution to Women's Medicine (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) in India spanned 30 years.
