a nonprofit family resource center Volume 3, Issue 3 July/August 2008 Cape Cod Children‛s Place Family Newsletter for families and caregivers of children from birth through age six living on the Lower/Outer Cape... CCCP News... July marks the start of a new fiscal year for Cape Cod Children's Place and all our grantfunded programs used by hundreds of families living on the Lower and Outer Cape. We are happy to report that it appears these grants have been renewed, and the programs will be able to continue. About six weeks ago, it appeared that the Mass. Family Network grant, which funds free programs in our 8 towns and many other programs around the state, would be eliminated entirely. What saved it? The calls of parents in many Massachusetts communities, who responded to the threat by calling their state senators and telling them how important the program is to them and their children. So as you and your children step into summer mode, we hope that while you enjoy some shared family time you will also bear in mind this important message: your voice is important. It is important to speak up on behalf of your own needs, your children's needs, your community's needs. It is important to pay attention to decisions being made, at every level - local, regional, national - and speak up when you disagree, or voice your approval when you agree. It is important to vote, and take every opportunity to make your voice heard. Your children can learn from you the important lesson that their voice matters, too. Have a great summer! Thanks and Giving… Thanks! To Jane Nielson for donating the sandbox to our preschool. Thanks! To Kelly Currier for donating the bags of soil to the Lobster group. Thanks! Cape & Islands United Way for the generous grant which made our Raising Healthy Families video project possible. Thanks! To “pirate” Russ Campbell for an entertaining story time in our preschool room. Art Outside the Box Auction In an event that has captured the imagination of artists and the attention of art collectors, the Cape cod children‛s Place will hold its 4th Annual Fine Arts Lunchbox Auction. This year the event will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Blue Heron Gallery, 20 Bank Street, Wellfleet, MA. All proceeds from this “Art Outside the Box” event will be used to help support children and families and also keep families working here on Cape Cod. Big names in the local art world such as Paul and Pharr Schulenberg, Dorothy Strauss, Jim Holland, Ellen Le Bow, Peter Kalil, William Bartlett, Rick Fleury, and others contribute to the fundraiser to benefit programs for children and families on the Lower and Outer Cape. Says Fleury of the benefit, “It‛s a great way for Cape artists, and art lovers, to give back to the community: to the children, something the Children‛s Place does every day, all year. And, what better reminder of the spirit that drives us than a lunchbox—feeding the muse of the child within.” Because of its tremendous popularity, a second event, “Art Outside the Box Too” has been added. Decorated by local craftspeople, these boxes will be available at the Wellfleet Oyster Fest in October. Cape Cod Children‛s Place, a non-profit resource center, has been serving local families for 13 years from its center at 10 Forest Ave. (off Nauset Road), in Eastham. A satellite childcare program, Sea-Babies, at the Wellfleet COA, is in its third year.
