New Name for Hospital
At the end of last year, Hollywood superstar and Noah’s
Ark Patron Catherine Zeta Jones helped us to celebrate
a new name for our children’s hospital - Noah’s Ark
Children’s Hospital for Wales.
Unveiling the new name, Catherine said;
“As Patron of Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital
Charity, I can truly express my delight in
the recognition that has been given to our
charity and more importantly to all of our
supporters that have given so generously.
I feel that they share in this celebration
having more than played a full part to make
this hospital a reality. This new name is
recognition for every moment of hard work,
every penny that has been donated.”
Spending hours chatting with patients,
family and staff, Catherine told everyone
that she felt like part of the family having
been a Patron and involved with our charity
from the very early days.
New name for
our charity too!
Catherine also announced
our own new name as
Noah’s Ark Children’s
Hospital Charity and the
reasons behind the change.
“Our own charity name has changed to Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital Charity so that
people new to Wales or new to us as supporters will more easily understand that our
charity and the hospital are two halves of one team, each sharing the same goal –
to provide world-class care for sick children in need of specialist and life-saving care.”
Catherine then went on to a lunch held at
City Hall where she spoke passionately
about the charity and the need to continue
with the fundraising for years to come.
She also did some fundraising herself,
auctioning off a spanner she had earlier
used to tighten the steelwork for a fantastic
£1500!!
Guests watched a short film made with
some patients from the hospital called
‘What the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital
Means to Us’. You can watch this film on

High Hopes for Noah’s
Ark Children’s Hospital
Building work on the second phase of the Noah’s Ark
Children’s Hospital for Wales has hit new heights as it was
topped out on St David’s Day – hooray.
The highest portions of the steel work are now in place which is an important milestone in
delivering the second phase of the children’s hospital.
Everyone here at the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital Charity is overjoyed to see that the
construction programme is on track and we’re continuing to work hard not only to fund vital
and life-saving equipment in this next phase but to ensure that we will always be here to
support the hospital and the anticipated 100,000 babies and children in Wales who will need
specialist medical care each year.
Phase Two of the Noah’s Ark
Children’s Hospital development
will create state-of-the-art
wards, four new operating
theatres, a new outpatient
department and dental suite,
an assessment unit, a new
Critical Care Unit, parents’
accommodation and facilities,
education and teaching
facilities, and a dedicated
radiology department with MRI
scanner.

Going the extra mile
The Road to Victory
From just 4 to 1000 – the CARTEN100
ride has grown in leaps and bounds!
Some may think fundraising is a walk in a park, but during
July 15-18th this year, it is specifically a run down a very big
road, the A470!
In 2004, four friends cycled the hundred
miles from Cardiff to Tenby. The next year,
a few friends joined them and by 2011, 320
people were cycling! The challenge, billed
not as a race but a fun ride, raises money
for charity through sponsorship.
The CARTEN100 team chose Noah’s Ark as
their charity for 2013, and this year a 1000
riders are taking on the challenge and
raising money to help make little lives better.
The team is hoping to raise £100,000 and
will support the cardio-respiratory suite
in Phase Two at the Noah’s Ark Children’s
Hospital. Peter Palmer of CARTEN100, says:
“We’re thrilled to be riding again this year.
It means more knowing that we’re pedaling
for a great cause!”
To gear up for the ride, the CARTEN team
and Noah’s Ark are hosting a gala dinner
on April 27th, with very special guest Owen
Money, at the Holland House Hotel in
central Cardiff. For £45, guests will enjoy a
three course meal and live band Whiskey
Business, as well as Owen’s hilarious
comedy talents.
To book, visit www.carten100.com or call
the Noah’s Ark office on 029 2033 5016.
To donate to the riders, visit
www.justgiving.com/teams/2013Carten100
The Wales UOTC has supported Noah’s
Ark for many years and has taken up the
four day challenge and planned every stop
with military precision! They’ve made sure
to put the “fun” in fundraising, though, and
have planned a pub quiz every night of their
event to raise further funds.
Their run will come to a grand finish outside
Cardiff landmark, The Senedd. That night,
our brave men will be treated to a Gala
dinner in the Copthorne Hotel where they
hope to regain all those calories they will
have lost.
The UOTC aims to raise a hefty sum for
children in Wales, so why not ensure they
do by sponsoring them and cheering them
on as they Run the A470 get in touch with us
for details or follow us on Twitter.
Hoo-rah!
The cardio-respiratory suite will be vital to children
chest problems. The specialist equipment
will include assessment of lung function and
exercise capacity. Currently the hospital cares for
approximately 200 children per year with Cystic
Fibrosis, all of whom require detailed testing
to monitor clinical progress. All children and
adolescents with severe asthma will require formal
testing, as will many children with cancer and rarer
lung conditions. In addition each year around
50 further children are treated who for a variety
of reasons do not breathe sufficiently and need
ventilators at home. All of these children benefit
from assessment that the cardio-respiratory suite
will offer.
Help us go the extra mile
so little lives can get better!

A Sound Pound
Birthday Girls!
Panasonic Director Kevin’s running may not
be supersonic yet, but he did raise a rather
speedy £3,328 for Noah’s Ark.
Panasonic also kindly donated a microwave
to be used as a prize in our Christmas raffle,
raising a tasty £700.
We would like to thank both Kevin and the
rest of Panasonic for making our perfectly
cooked gratitude go ‘ping’.
We look forward to working with the lovely
staff at Panasonic much more in 2013.
Ambassador Marilyn Meisels had a very
happy birthday indeed when she raised
£1295 for Noah’s Ark.
Marilyn, who works for John Lewis in
London, has long supported the Charity
after learning that her favourite musical
artist, Dame Shirley Bassey, is a Patron.
Marilyn has volunteered at events as well
as donating funds, and she said: “I chose to
support Noah’s Ark at my birthday because
it is the charity of my heart.”
Penblywdd Hapus also to Lady Mair ElisThomas, who raised a birthday-cake worthy
£2000 in lieu of gifts at her recent birthday
party.
Lady Mair and her husband Lord Dafydd
have long been supporters of Noah’s Ark
and we’re grateful that Mair thought of us
on her big day.
Thanks, petal!
Those who say people won’t invest in
green energy are clearly underestimating
the attempts of the Llandaff Floral Society.
The group recently held an open-evening
showcasing the colourful work of their green
fingers and during the event a healthy £150
was raised for us.
Heather Mayor of the Society said;
“We’re so glad to support Noah’s Ark and
their worthy cause.”
We truly appreciate their bloomin’ lovely
support and consider them our buds!

Elf Yourself
Everyone had a chance to be Santa’s Little

Centre in Cardiff Bay donated the proceeds

The pop-up booth offered families,

memorable and fun Christmas photos in
which they were magically transformed into
elves, reindeer, or polar bears!
All our jolly elves, bears and reindeer gave
generously, and the booth raised over

Funds from Above!
Brave staff at the Queen Street Branch of
HSBC in Cardiff conquered their fears when
they leapt from a plane in the name of
fundraising!
Tracey Maharg, Carly Beaver, Sian Roberts,
Rob Rainbird, Chris Hyett, Ben Youde,
Charlie Bumby, Jos Adams, Jill Fairhead
decided to skydive after Tracey’s daughter
Shauna needed hospital treatment for a
fractured hip.
Shauna says of her mum and colleagues’
brave leap: “We wanted to choose a
charity that would help children in similar
or worse situations to those which I’ve seen
throughout my hospital visits. I also wanted
to give money back to the hospital which
helped me recover.”
Through in-store and online fundraising,
and through HSBC’s matched funding
scheme, they raised £5,519. Their
fundraising went sky-high!

Straight As for
Egg-cellent Students
The Children’s Hospital enjoyed an Easter
Egg-stravaganza when pupils from Fitzalan
High School in Cardiff donated toys and
Easter eggs.
Sabina, Forida, Bethan, Kristina, Jade and
Lauren from Year 9 were extremely kind in
thinking about helping out poorly children
at the hospital, and are thrilled that their
eggs and toys will be sold in the Noah’s Ark
shop to raise funds for medical equipment
to help the hospital.
Forida said: “We are really pleased we
could help out Noah’s Ark. We want to do
everything we can to help other youngsters
who are in hospital, especially over the
holidays.”
We think they deserve eggs-tra credit for
their fabulous efforts!

A Peak Performance
Coffee Morning Cash
Dyfed Powys police offers went on a
different beat entirely when they completed
the Five Peaks challenge for the Noah’s Ark
Children’s Hospital Charity!
Andy Davies and colleagues said the
challenge, which involves scaling Snowdon,
Ben Nevis, Slieve Donard, Scafell Pike and
Carrauntoohil, all within 48 hours, was
“grueling and really intense.”
The brave bobbies have raised £395 so far,
and hope their funds will keep climbing as
they have!
The Young at Heart Club of Trethomas raised £1450 from
holding chatty coffee mornings all through 2012. The club,
who run from the Grove retirement home in the town, enjoy
the coffee mornings and love a chance to get together.
Mrs Livingstone, a member of the Young at Heart club,
presented Chairman Lyn Jones with the money. “We were very
pleased to hear about how our funds will be used to help sick
babies and children across Wales.”
We’ll drink to that!
A Bull’s Eye for Mark
Proof that teddy bears really do love cake came in the
form of a tasty £377 raised by the Teddy Bear Hospital
student group earlier this year,
The group, which aim to make hospital less scary for
children, raised the money by holding homemade
cake sales before lectures at Cardiff University.
Aptly named group member Kirsten Bear, said,
“We’re so pleased that our teddy bear treats have
helped make children in Wales better!”
Feel inspired by this? Contact the office to get involved in our 2013 Teddy
Bears’ Picnic campaign, or see page 8 for details.
Sian Caller and friends at Baden Darts Club
in Porth raised over £1,000 this Easter in
memory of their dear friend, Mark Truelove.
Mark was tragically killed in an accident ten
years ago, and every year the club donate
to Noah’s Ark as a way to remember Mark
and celebrate his life.
His children chose Noah’s Ark to benefit
from a fund that has now raised over
£8,000. Director Suzanne met them
on Easter Sunday at their annual darts
tournament to accept the money, and said;
“It’s so very kind of Baden club and friends
to donate to Noah’s Ark in memory of Mark.
In this way his family and friends have
formed lasting legacy for him.”
