8 years and especially 2012.
Lady Pat and I wish everyone Seasons
Greetings and a New Year filled with

DIRECTOR’S STAFF
Director’s Staff President, Neil White, has made good his
promise of managing the Second Section for this Fall’s
October 5th and 6th Ceremonial, right here in our own
backyard. Indeed, it was done entirely by members who came
in full force that Saturday -- from the medical check-up of the
candidates, down to the last stunt. The Director’s Staff and
faithful Nobles were there from set-up to tear-down.
The Hot Sands is the culmination of a Noble’s quest to become
a complete Shriner. This, in a way, highlights the claim that
the Shrine is undeniably the fun side of Freemasonry. And
sure enough, as proven in both of the ceremonials this year,
the fun and laughter starts from the moment the candidates
dig their magic forks into that hearty meal on Friday right to
where they flash that full Shriner grin during the banquet’s
pictorials.
The Director’s Staff has been operating in Alberta for over 80
years. It is the unit whose members form the first impression
for all men who set foot in the Shrine in the quest of proudly
wearing the much-coveted fez.
The unit meets the first Wednesday of the month at Biff’s
Lounge, 7:00 pm. As for your Shriner jewels, gifts, trinkets
and other “bling-blings”, just Google Al Shamal Director’s
Staff Jewellery. Neil White is also a phone call away at 780464-7064. Keep us in mind for any special Christmas ideas
that you may need!
The Director’s Staff is right on course and its proud members
all say, “You are most welcome to join!”

RECORDER’S RAMBLINGS
The comments below are not the opinion of the Divan or Unit
Heads. They are the opinion and comments of the Recorder.
Unit accounts to support our existence, not money from your
Casino accounts.
Those of you who belong to a Unit will already have had this
sent to you from your Unit Head Member. For those of you
who don’t belong to a Unit yet, here are my thoughts.
There are concerns about the lack of
attendance at the Unit Heads’ meetings.
At the October meeting only about 30%
of the Units were represented. This is very
discouraging when there are important items
to be discussed and there is only input from
a few.
My other concern is that only some of the Units and Clubs
are reporting what is happening at the Unit Heads Meeting.
I encourage each Unit Leader to get the message out to their
members. There are members at large who don’t belong to
a Unit or Club, how does this information get passed on to
them. They are important and would help if they knew what
was happening. They became Shriners for a reason, to support
the philanthropy, I hope. If they only became a member to
wear the FEZ and brag that they are a Shriner, they joined for
the wrong reason.
We need quality and quality will begat quantity.
Is there a reason for not attending? If so, let
the Potentate or the Recorder know.
This is the opinion and thoughts of your Recorder not the
Divan.
Firstly, all the Units and Shrine Clubs should know what events
the other Units have coming up and secondly new projects
and possibly the start up of new Units. Communication is very
important and this is the best way to get the information out
to the Units and Clubs.
Gary Willis, Recorder
Maybe the Divan needs to take ownership of new projects
and solicit the Units and Clubs to assist in putting them on.
I believe each Divan member should put on their own money
making project to help run the Shrine Centre. It can be as big
or small as you want it, every dollar counts. There are lots of
possibilities to make a few dollars. With the Circus income
being down this year a huge effort is needed to help cover the
cost to the end of this year and into 2013.
The Units and Clubs seem to be in good shape financially
but most of them are not supporting the Shrine Centre
operations. How does the Centre get needed support from
the Clubs and Units to help our operation? I know you will say
that we get Gaming funds, which is true, but most of these
funds are restricted.
The Shrine Centre applies for funds from AGLC for each Unit
to make purchases of items required to purchase equipment,
vehicles, pay for repairs, travel and many other items. This
being said we apply to spend restricted funds for your benefit.
I in turn ask each Unit and Club for a donation from your

SILVER WINGS
CLOWN UNIT
Well the Wingers had a great time selling at the novelty booth
at the Shrine Circus - it is so much fun for us to mingle with
the parents and kids at the shows - thanks to all members and
wives who came to help.
We had 15 members that took part in our 64th annual Shrine
Circus along with a large number of our wives who manned
a novelty table for all shows. Our skit, the “Body Improver”
or else known as the “Sweat Box”, was performed at each
of the four shows with a good response from the crowd.
We also had our Chili and Pasta Halloween Night on November
3rd. What a night it was with over 60 adults and children
dressed in Halloween costume and many other who did not.
Thanks to all that came out for our Family Fun Night and to all
members and wives for working so hard to make it a success.
We have lots of plans and ideas for the New Year so watch
this space for more info to come.
page 6
We had several members attend PNSA, compete and either
win or place in the top five. We gained one keen new
member and a strong possibility for another.
From all accounts, it looks like we will be having another
excellent year with over 100 move outs to our unit credit,
by far more than any other unit. This is to the credit of
our active members who may do 2 or 3 events in one day,
and especially to our President and Move Out Coordinator,
Fred “DERF” Drew, for his dedication and efforts to meet
demands for clowns. Our seconded busiest time of the year
is now upon us as the demand for clowns increases greatly
as it gets close to the festive season. We look forward to
a busy 2013 under the direction of a new slate of officers,
as the requests for both clowns and our 2nd degree team
come in.

GREETERS UNIT
Exciting times are coming! 8 NEW KENWORTHS
ARRIVING…WE NEED DRIVERS!
be preparing the final proposal for presentation to the Divan
soon.
This is just one aspect in Shrinedom that the Greeters are
involved in. Besides doing our usual duties and responsibilities
in the regular monthly Al Shamal Shrine meetings, we are also
involved in other special activities:
In October, the Unit was involved in various capacities at the
Shrine Circus. You saw green jackets selling 50/50 tickets
and souvenir programs, helping people to their seats, and
generally just being there to greet our circus fans. The Nobles
and their Ladies were there as we have always done in the
past and will continue doing in the future.
The Greeters are there for the annual Auction. We provide
manpower support to make the event successful.
Indeed, The Greeters Unit is expanding our parade fleet.
Joining our reliable and ever loyal vintage firetruck will be a
squad of Kenworth go-karts. We are eagerly anticipating the
next round of move-outs as we firm up our plan for these gocarts in the coming months.
In our September regular meeting, the Unit unanimously
approved a motion to purchase eight brand new Kenworth
go-carts to use in our moveouts. Not only do we see our
members enthusiastically zipping along our firetruck, but
more importantly, we are anticipating more attraction and
enjoyment for our parade viewers. The excitement is in the
air and slowly but surely will continue to increase as we
move along in this endeavour. Our working committee will

Our regular monthly meetings at The Yellowhead Casino
gives us an opportunity to socialize with our Ladies. This also
provides anyone wishing to join the unit an opportunity to
meet the unit members in a social setting and at the same
time see how the unit conducts it’s business.
So if you know of anyone who, or if you yourself, wants to
check us out, we surely welcome you and your Lady to this
monthly event. Just let our Secretary/Treasurer Noble Doug
Troock know so we can include you in our headcount for

LADIES AUXILIARY
It should be noted that the EVENING
GROUP is now meeting on the 3rd

upstairs. They have changed their
name to HAPPY CRAFTERS. Everyone
is welcome to come and join us. Next
meeting will be Monday afternoon,
December 17th.
The Circus has come and gone. Our Ladies operated a booth to
help our Shriners in selling novelties under the direction of Mary
McHargue, who did a great job of getting recruits and manning
the booth. A huge thank you to all that helped. Also thanks
go out to Isabel Gauthier and LaVerne Chartrand who once
again were the office ticket sellers. Our Shriners don’t know
how lucky they are to have these gals!
Our new comers pot luck luncheon was held in October and
was well attended. Some Divan members were there which
was appreciated. Ill. Sir Bob Thachuk brought us up to date
with the events he attended at the Imperial Sessions. He told
a heart warming story of a patient that was born deaf and can
now hear and who sings beautifully after the care he received
at the Shriners Hospital.
The Auxiliary Luncheon, Bazaar and Cookie Walk, which was
held Saturday November 17th 2012 at the Shrine Centre was a
huge success again.
Kudos go out to Joy Leskewich for sending out e-mail notices
to keep us informed and on track of up coming events. She
does a wonderful job!
Christmas is fast approaching and once again we wish you
Happy Holidays. See you next year.
HOSPITAL COMMITTEE
Nobles your Hospital Committee under the leadership of Noble
Darwin Harrison and assisted by Noble Don Millar have looked
after over 100 patients files this year on our behalf. Some times
they get thank you letters that brings our purpose into reality.
Following is a selection of comments from one such letter.
December 2012
“Dear Darwin,
I must start this letter by expressing my deepest apologies for
taking so long to send this to you. Our trip to Portland was
amazing, but the time went by so fast, Portland is a beautiful
city and I would have loved to stay longer to enjoy it. Our flights
down were uneventful, everyone we dealt with at all 3 airports
on the way down were very friendly, helpful, understanding
and patient; My little trooper did so well! She never slept at all
on the way down, but she was an absolute angle through it all,
no crying, whining, fussiness, just perfect! Once we landed in
Portland, I put her in her stroller to go get luggage and find a
taxi; she was exhausted and fell asleep almost instantly.
The next morning, The Shriners Hospital sent their van to
pick us up at the hotel and took us to the hospital. From the
moment you walk in the front doors, they made us feel like we
were the only special patient they had. They were very good
explaining things every step of the way, so we always knew
what was happening. The doctor we saw asked us a million
questions about me and Seanna. She did a very thorough exam
of Seanna, and more importantly to me, she handled Seanna in
a way that made her feel comfortable.
Seanna’s diagnosis is intoeing from femoral anteversion tibial
torsion. Our appointment at the hospital took less time than
we expected. We left the hospital and the shuttle van quickly
drove us to the airport so we could try and catch an earlier
flight home. In our rush to get to the airport and switch our
flights, we forgot a seatbelt strap for Seanna’s car seat in the
hospital shuttle van. Once we landed in Edmonton, I turned
my phone back on and I had 7 messages from the driver of the
shuttle van. He found the strap and drove all the way back to
the airport and tried to find us, but we had already boarded our
plane. The fact that the driver went out of his way to try and
call me he took the extra step of mailing it to me, absolutely
made my heart ache with gratefulness. I was touched by this;
it still makes me cry when I think about it even now. I did not
get his name in all of this, he truly was our guardian angel on
the trip!
I want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the
hard work you did to make this trip possible for Seanna. The
relief I received from just having someone who knows what
they are talking about have a look at her has eased my mind
and my heart so much. I now feel like I did all that I could
to make sure that I was making an informed decision that
was best for my daughter. The work that The Shriners and its
hospitals do is absolutely wonderful, and the world is a better
place by having people like you in it.”

B
AN EXCERPT FROM GENERAL ORDER NO. 1:
FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES
It is natural to associate the fez with Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Because of this, meticulous attention must be given to all fundraising
activities, including circuses, to make certain that such activities comply
with the law of the land and that a contributor is not led to believe that his
money will be used for the Hospitals when all or a portion thereof will be
used otherwise. The integrity of our charity and of our fraternity must
remain above reproach.
Your specific attention is called to the following fraternal and charitable bylaws:
§335.3 USE OF NAME “SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR
CHILDREN.” The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children”
or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any fundraising activity by a temple or Noble without the written consent of the Imperial
Potentate and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hospitals
is prohibited.
§503.11 The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or
reference to the Hospitals in connection with any commercial product
or business enterprise is prohibited unless the written consent of the
Board of Directors and Trustees has been first obtained.
Now, therefore, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED:
1. Fundraising for Fraternal Purposes:
(a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of

MEMBERSHIP
Ill. Sirs, Nobles & Ladies,
This is my last write-up in the Sahida as Al Shamal’s Membership
Chairman as my term of serving as Chairman for the past five years
comes to a close.
I would like to first thank my wife, Lady Wilma for all her support, help,
and ideas over the last five years. She’s worked very hard for our cause
and I am grateful.
I would also like to thank Ill. Sir Barry Gogal & Ill. Sir Jim Templeton for
seeing the potential in me to become Al Shamal membership chairman.
At the 2007 Winter PNSA in Spokane they (undoubtedly with the aid of
a scotch or two) talked me into becoming the membership chairman as
they said how easy it would be. In hindsight, it wasn’t easy, but it was
rewarding.
Ann Boulanger and their children Jesse and Sarah and Noble Trevor
Morton. Thank you all.
I hope the nobility will show the same support to the next Al Shamal
Membership Chairman.
Because of Ill. Sir Barry Gogal & Ill. Sir Jim Templeton, I have been
appointed to Shriners International Membership Development Specialist
(MDS) for Team 1. I will be working with six temples on their membership.
Thank you
Noble Neville Bush
Al Shamal Membership Chairman
2008 – 2012
Thanks to Ill. Sir Jim Heron, Ill. Sir Armond Nesdoly & Ill. Sir Bob Thachuk
for their support.
The first year, 2008, with the help from Ill. Sir Doug Sharkey we got it
done. Ill Sir Doug started going to lodges (thirty-nine meetings) talking
about Al Shamal Shriners and our Shrine Hospitals.
Our Membership Committee meetings could be held in a phone booth
(meeting of two, right Doug?). But it was because of Ill Sir Doug’s lodge
visits that Al Shamal became a gold temple in 2009. We need to keep up
the hard work and get back to being a gold temple.
We started TGIF socials one Friday evening per month. It started
out strong with 35 – 100 people coming out. Unfortunately, it later
dwindled until it was just the members and family of the TLC Corps and
Silver Wings out to support it, so in 2010 we cancelled them due to lack
of interest.
We had a number of 60’s nights, which were well attended thanks to
‘Wolfman Jack’ (Noble Chad Zopf) as the DJ.
Snow, rain or sun could not stop our Easter Egg Hunts. We had anywhere
from 30 kids up to over 80 kids, with thanks to the help of the Al Shamal
Clowns and Noble Blair Hart and his family doing face painting.
Last but not least, I could not have done any of this without the help of
the Nobles and Ladies of my unit, the TLC Corps. If I needed something
done, I just needed to call on some of the members of that unit. I’d
like to recognize some for their support: Noble Greg & Lady LaVerne
Chartrand, Noble Michael Cline-Freemont, Noble Marcel and Lady Kerri-

EDITORS COMMENTS
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who submitted
articles and supported the Sahida over the last three years during which
I was its editor. I am a believer that change in most cases is good
and essential in some form for an organization to remain strong. We
should always encourage new ideas and thoughts from those around us,
members or not, in order to explore our full potential as Shriners. To this
end, several weeks ago I felt the editor’s position needed a change at the
end of 2012, and both Ill. Sir Thachuk and Noble Howard were informed.
The three years that I have been the editor of your Sahida have been a
thrilling, an enjoyment and challenge. Your editor for 2013 will be Ill. Sir
Allan Frado, and I offer him my support as I’m sure you will also. Joyce
and I wish each and everyone a Happy Festive Season.
Noble John Fraser

PRIVATE MEMBERS’ BUSINESS, Mrs. Anne-Marie Day (Charlesbourg—
Haute-Saint-Charles, NDP):
Mr. Speaker, today I would like to tell my colleagues the rather
extraordinary story of Jérémy Gabriel, a 15-year-old young man from my
riding. Jérémy Gabriel, from Charlesbourg, was born prematurely with
major facial deformities caused by a rare congenital disease and was also
deaf. In 2003, he underwent surgery to implant a bone-anchored hearing
aid. After the surgery, Jérémy became fascinated by sound and discovered
that he could sing. He has undergone 17 surgeries in 10 years. When he
was nine years old, Jérémy sang for Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican and
for Céline Dion in Las Vegas. On July 4 of this year, Jérémy Gabriel was
named patient ambassador by the Shriners Hospitals for Children at the
national convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. He took to the stage in
front of more than 10,000 delegates from around the world to perform
a song and share his story. Bravo, Jérémy.

AL SHAMAL DONATES TO “GNF”
Since receiving their charter in 1986, Al Shamal Shriners have been
in the forefront of providing philanthropic assistance to Edmonton
and Northern/Central Alberta charities - in addition to their ongoing
support of Shriners Hospitals for Children.
That was evident again November 8th when Potentate Bob Thachuk
presented a $5,000 cheque to the Good Neighbour Fund (GNF) at their
annual fund-raising Poor Boys Lunch, which was heavily supported by
numerous Shriners in attendance.
There has always been a close relationship between both groups
since the GNF was formed 20 years ago and started assisting children
referred to them by Al Shamal - such as a quadriplegic teen who
required a ceiling lift; a teen age girl requiring a rare operation in
Toronto where a rib was used to reconstruct her jaw; plus two blind
sisters attending MacEwen University who required computers.
Potentate Bob Thachuk summed it up succinctly: “Shriners Hospitals
were started 90 years ago by our great fraternity. But we remain
aware and cognizant of other charities and not for profit organizations
in this city and province, who share the same compassionate concerns
we have. That is why we support them . . . and the wonderful work
they also do.”

AL SHAMAL ORIENTAL BAND
TLC
The TLC Corps. held their annual Perogy Fest in the Shrine Centre
auditorium Saturday, September 24th. It was a full house of happy
excited people of all ages just having a good time!
The tables were set up in a very festive manner with centre pieces
provided by Wilma Bush, music for entertainment and background along
with a 50/50 draw. Fred Susun from Westmount Jewellers provided two
lovely ladies bracelets for a raffle that raised over $800! Thanks Fred!
2012 NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY AWARD
National Philanthropy Day is held annually to honour and recognize those who
contribute their time, talent and dedication to the spirit of giving. The members of
our Oriental Band excel in all these. Congratulations.
Greetings fellow sons of the desert. It is indeed an honour to serve as
Sultan for the ensuing year of such a great unit. I would like to thank
the members who stepped up to serve as an officer or a member of the
executive of the unit. I look forward to an exciting year. On a sad note,
our unit was visited by the black camel so we mourn the passing of Noble
John Burrough. I thank the members of the band for their attendance at
his memorial, Lady Janice and the family really appreciated us being there
for them.
As the year is winding down for the band we still have the Children’s
Christmas Party at the Glenrose Hospital on December 7. It is always a
treat to perform for the kids and they absolutely love our music. Later
that evening, we will be having our Unit Christmas Party and Installation
in Biff’s Lounge, where we can kick back and have a relaxing evening with
our members, their wives and treat our widows to an enjoyable evening.
Now this is the part of my article where I want to address the Shriners
who are not presently members of units. Now I know what you think “I
don’t have any musical ability”. Well neither did I when I joined the band
(although some still say I don’t have any). I just had the desire to go out
and have fun and I have made great friends while I was doing it. There is
nothing like the feeling of a small child running up to you and pointing
with the look of amazement at the curly toed shoes you’re wearing.
But the main event, of course, was the food lovingly prepared for the
10th year in a row by the Magas family. It just kept coming and coming.
Perogies, kubasa, cabbage rolls, salads, breads, and all the trimmings
followed by desserts brought by the TLC members wives and girl friends.
Again –everyone had a full tummy and the comments were all positive.
The Magas’ cooked so many perogies there were some left over which
were sold for take out in a flash!
We want to thank all the members of the Magas family who have so
kindly given of their time to expertly provide some of the best tasting
Ukranian food found in all of Edmonton. Because of them, our Perogy
Fest has grown successfully year after year and we are looking forward
to a large group of repeat patrons who appreciate good food, fun, and
fellowship! But alas, the Magas’ have advised us that this is the last
year they will be able to sponsor our event.
As we say a grateful good by to our friends, the Magas family, we will
let you know that another event is being planned for next year. Not to
replace the Perogy Fest, but to keep all of our regular guests happy and
entertained as well as raise a little money for the Shrine.
SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!
So, if you are looking to experience that feeling along with making great
friends, learning to play beautiful music, participating in parades, getting
together for barbeques, taking your Lady to Ladies nights and wrapping
a year up with a Christmas Party, then why not come out to our practices
to see what we are all about. Our practices are held on the second, third
& fourth Mondays of each month (except July, August & December) in the
Auditorium located at the Glenrose Hospital 10230 - 111 Avenue starting
at 7:30 pm. We would like to have you join us.
Till the next issue.
