Summer Reading Club 2014: Funny Business Theme #1 Primary: Pun and Games Title: Puntastic Fun and Games! Time: 60 minutes Created by: Helena Ashcroft‐Loberg, Fraser Valley Regional Library Materials: Jars with lids (for each kid) Decorating supplies: ’window crayons’, paints, feathers, big googly eyes, sequins Jokes printed on slips of paper from http://growingbookbybook.com/2013/03/27/april‐table‐topics/ Comic book template for each kid with 6 boxes Pencils or other drawing tool Snack Prizes (optional) Program: 1. Joke jar activity may start or end the program.Have enough plexi‐glass jars or tin jars with lids to go around. Have the children decorate their jars. Explain that the jars are going to be exchanged so that you end up with new jokes to take home (or not, you decide prior to the program beginning). Have a separate table covered with jokes written on small pieces of paper. When the children are done with their decorating they take their jar and go over to the table covered with jokes. They can pick the ones they like. They can have a joke jar to cheer them up or cheer someone else up when they are feeling blue. Play Simon Sounds instead of Simon Says a few times. For example: Simon sounds sneeze; Simon sounds cough, Laugh… 3. Story and Jokes. Begin with a book, and then invite children to raise their hand if they would like to tell their own joke. Have a couple of your own to tell. 4. Onomatopoeia Comic strip design. Explain what Onomatopoeia is (the creation of words that imitate natural sounds. For example moo, or pop!) Have paper ready with 6 boxes on each piece of paper. The kids draw their own comic strips using onomatopoeic words. Leave a few lists of onomatopoeic words on the table for examples. Ask what might be happening in a story that has that particular sound in it. 5. (optional) “I went on a trip and in my suitcase I packed a _____” game. All players repeat this sentence and each adds an item to the packed suitcase, listing the items that the previous player had packed in order. The last player in the game is the winner and gets a prize. 6. Snack break 7. Artificial Fart Noise competition: The loudest artificial ‘rude’ noise using armpits, raspberries, etc…wins a prize! Whoopee cushions or joke party toys like funny noses with glasses make great prizes. 8. End with one or two stories and a joke or two.
