Brushing Your Teeth Is Good for Your Heart
Exercise Lowers Risk of Falling
Regular brushing may give you more reason to smile than you
originally thought. Aside from being able to show off your pearly
whites with pride, it may also reduce your risk for heart disease.
Researchers at University College London surveyed 12,000
people in Scotland for eight years. They found that people who never
or rarely brushed had a 70% increased chance of heart attack compared to those who brushed twice a day.
Though they are still unsure of the exact causal effect, the scientists think it may be related to another study that linked gum disease
to heart disease. In that study, gum disease was linked to a 19%
increase in heart disease, and that number more than doubled to
44% in people under the age of 65. The reason for this is because
inflammation in the gums can spread to arteries in other parts of
the body.
So aside from eating healthy and exercising, remember to brush
and floss every day; your heart will love you for it.
About eight million people end up in the emergency room annually due to fall-related injuries and 19,000 of those incidents are
fatal. But according to a 19-year study, regular exercise can reduce
the risk of falling in the elderly and young.
Between 1970 and 1989, 10,615 people participated in the
Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study. Twenty percent of the participants reported falling and 15% of those fell while walking.
Overall, researchers concluded that only two hours of exercise a
week was sufficient to reduce the risk of falls. Men appear to benefit
more from exercise than women, as there was no significant reduction in falls in women who exercised.
Most surprising, however, was that younger people were at equal
risk to falls as much as seniors were and that exercise appeared to
benefit all age groups.
Watching Sports Can Boost Mental Health
If you were one of many millions of fans throughout the world who
followed the World Cup, you may have experienced the elation of your
favorite team’s victory or the agony of defeat during the course of
the tournament. Whatever the outcome, scientists say that there are
positive mental health benefits from cheering on your favorite team
and watching matches with other fans.
Sports events encourage social connections between people and
create a sense of belonging. Edward Hirt, a professor of psychological and brain sciences at Indiana University, states: “Sharing a common allegiance with others bonds people together in a special way.
We can relate to others who share fanship with our team and feel a
camaraderie with them that transcends ourselves.”
Such feelings can also boost confidence and in the case of fans
of winning teams, it has been found to boost testosterone levels in
men. So next time someone tells you that there’s no benefit to watching sports, give them a loud “boo.”

Make Your Barbecue Fun and Safe
Summertime is here and for most of you that means breaking out
the barbecue set and inviting family and friends over. To keep things
delicious, fun, and sanitary, here are a couple of rules to abide by to help
reduce your chances of food poisoning or contamination:
• Keep all raw meat in plastic bags. This keeps the juices in the meat
and prevents it from accidentally spilling onto other food.
• Keep different foods, such as raw meat and fresh vegetables for
salad, as far apart as possible. This includes using separate utensils,
bowls, chopping boards, etc. to prevent cross-contamination.
• Whether you like your meat rare or well done, make sure it is properly
cooked. Severely undercooked meat may be swarming with bacteria
while overcooked meat may contain carcinogenic compounds.
Superfoods for Healthy Bones
Calcium is a crucial element to bones and vitamin D aids absorption. It’s important to get sufficient servings of both nutrients daily

ue to a daily, hectic lifestyle that most people have become
accustomed to, it has become a challenge to maintain
regular sleep patterns. Sometimes, the traditional
techniques, such as deep breathing and meditation don’t
do the trick. As consumers continue to seek alternatives, natural

50% improvement in their ability to fall asleep and length of sleep.

and prostate health.4 It is thought that the powerful antioxidant may
help maintain the integrity of the DNA within the cells of healthy

Surveys have long revealed that Mediterranean men, who
consume frequent tomato-based meals, have fewer complaints

Famed actress and author reveals that the secret to
looking beautiful begins with feeling beautiful inside.
T
he audience collectively gasped
when Raquel Welch made her
entrance as a presenter at the
2010 Tony Awards. “Oh my God,
she’s beautiful,” said a nearby wag,
not because Raquel recently turned 70
and looked good for her age—but because
she looked incredible for any age.
In a career spanning nearly 50 years,
Welch has starred in more than 45 films,
including her star-making role in One Million
Years B.C. wearing the doeskin bikini that
catapulted her to the status of international sex symbol; her arch performance
in the title role of Myra Breckinridge; and
her Golden Globe-winning comedic turn
in the delightful Three Musketeers. She
has worked with Richard Burton, Jimmy
Stewart, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and
Jodie Foster, among a long list of esteemed
stars and directors. On stage, she took
Broadway by storm in Woman of the Year,
breaking box-office records at the famed
Palace Theatre, and later earned critical
and popular raves in Victor/Victoria. In the award-winning PBS series,
American Family, she wowed viewers for
her sensitive portrayal of Aunt Dora and
in 2007, at age 67, she was named by
People Magazine as one of the 50 Most
Beautiful People in the World.
Off-camera, Welch has been a longtime supporter of the American Cancer
Society (ACS) beginning in 1975 when she
served as its national spokesperson. More
recently, her wig line, the Raquel Welch
Signature Collection, has been helping
cancer patients through annual donations
of wigs to women suffering hair loss as a
result of chemotherapy. Acknowledging
contributions of more than $10 million
in wigs from the collection, in 2009 the
ACS honored her with its Corporate Impact
Award. With the recent publication of her New
York Times best seller, Raquel: Beyond the
Cleavage, we get a glimpse at the woman
behind the very public persona and philanthropic achievements. A candid look at
the woman behind the legend, the book
is part personal memoir, part philosophy,
and part practical advice on being a woman of any age and on succeeding brilliantly as a mature woman. On a recent break from her
book tour and an appearance on Oprah, VitaStrong Magazine was
privileged to catch up with Raquel at her home in Beverly Hills. VitaStrong: You really do look incredible. How do you take care
of yourself?
Raquel Welch: You know, it turns out I’m not really that exceptional.
Most of the women I know and see in the older age group are holding
together very nicely. They’ve made it part of their way of life to keep
up their looks, health, and eating habits. They’re careful about the
foods they buy. Of course, we don’t see many older women on television on a regular basis or have lots of role models, and that’s one of

the reasons I wrote the book: to show what kind of a person I am;
why I chose my profession; how discipline and single-mindedness
contributed to my life; and also how diet, exercise, makeup, and ageappropriate dressing can make for a more youthful appearance—
along with an explanation of the most popular new medical techniques and procedures available to women as they age. Bottom line,
attitude and spiritual awareness can enhance the lives of all women.
I had my first child at 19 and I don’t think the people who saw One
Million Years B.C. knew that the girl they were seeing in that short,
little dress had two small toddlers. I don’t think they realize that what
I appeared to be was not the full story.
VS: What’s a typical day like for Raquel Welch?
RW: I got up today at 5:30 a.m. so I could be at my yoga class by
6:30. I eat right and take care of my skin, and I’m careful to choose
the kind of clothes that are going to be flattering to me, keeping in
mind my age and not going too far with it; being aware to be the very
best I can be at my age now. The book has a whole chapter on diet
and food combinations and I stay on a very healthy diet designed by
a nutritionist with my workload and lifestyle in mind. For example, I
have certain stresses in my life associated with being in the public
eye, so I eat foods that are easy to digest: chicken, fish, and turkey, and maybe once or twice a week some kind of red meat plus

steamed green vegetables—broccoli, green beans, snow peas, kale.
And in the hot summer months I can have salads with romaine lettuce. I can have three medium-sized fruits a day or fruit juice diluted
with water, so it’s not too much sugar. And, of course, I do cheat once
in a while. But—for instance—knowing I was going to be on the Tonys,
I was on my best behavior and training five to six days a week so I
could be the best most presentable Raquel and not the Raquel who
just had a big bag of chips.
VS: What do you do for fun?
RW: I’m really a pretty simple girl. I love being with my friends, I love
to drive down to La Jolla in San Diego—which is my home town—and
visit my sister, and we walk along the coastline with her doggie.
Really simple things. I like a good book, going to the theater, concerts, museums, and even though it really is a big obligation, I do like
to write. I’ve learned that when I really can’t quite figure things out, I
find that if I write down a page or two of my feelings it kind of helps
me to flesh out an idea that hasn’t quite crystallized.
VS: How did you learn to be so disciplined about your health?
Raquel knows how to make an entrance and strut her stuff
wherever she goes.

RW: Let me tell you, it isn’t easy. And there are plenty of days when
I just don’t feel like it. That’s why I like to join a group of some sort,
so I can feed off the energy in the room. I don’t have the discipline
to do it all myself; I like to walk into the room and see other people
dripping sweat and suffering just like me. And we’re all helping each
other by being there together whether you have a workout buddy, or
join a class, or there’s just someone beside you on the next machine.
And I try to mix it up: maybe one day I’ll walk up the long hill near my
house instead of working on the treadmill. The point is that everyone
can do something; you can start with a little bit and work forward
from there.
I’ve always worked hard, but when I see other people struggling
with health issues, I’m reminded that each day and each breath
is such a tremendous blessing. This body that God gave us really
does heal itself if you just help it along. It’s really important to keep
up with walking and stretching to get those joints lubricated. If you
keep thinking, “it’s over,” it will be. Or, you can choose a different
way. We’re all a manifestation of how we think and how we feel and
what we believe in, and we end up looking just like that. I can’t paint
enough makeup on my face or have my hairstylist do enough work to
make me feel good if I’m not helping my body.

VS: Do you take any vitamins or supplements?

VS: How has getting older affected your routine?
RW: I don’t have quite the stamina as I did when I was younger.
Maybe I can’t do certain yoga postures or hold them as long, but
that’s okay. I go in there and I say, “You don’t have to compete with
anyone, including your younger self. That will just make you upset.
Just do the best you can every day. And that’s all you can do.”
If you apply yourself a little bit, and do something consistently,
maybe to prepare yourself for some event, it really does gather
momentum and you may be shocked. But in two weeks’ time you
really have made quite a dent in the whole thing. You look different
and you feel different. When I was sitting at a computer writing every
day, I was feeling kind of ugly and I’d gained 20 pounds. My shoulder
and neck went out and I broke my toe twice going up my own stairs
because I’m a bit absentminded. I wasn’t in very good shape and
wasn’t feeling very stylish or cute, so how could I write about how to
dress when I was feeling frumpy? We all have times when we feel like
that; when we feel like we’ll never feel upbeat and energetic again.
But you can get through it.
This is one of issues that many menopausal women deal with
when our bodies change. I was so depressed and my energy just
disappeared, and I was gaining weight and I didn’t know what hit me.
I tried all these different things, but none of them helped very much
and I kept looking for Raquel and I couldn’t find her. “What happened to her, where did she go? Okay, this is it. She’s gone. That girl
is gone.” And in a funny way she was kind of gone. But at the same
time she wasn’t completely missing. When I regained my balance I
found that she was still hanging in there. The energetic, excitable,
enthusiastic Raquel is still here. It’s really very interesting and as an
actress I make it kind of fun. You can either say, “I used to look like
this in a bikini and I don’t like wearing a bikini anymore.” Or you can
say, “I’m doing pretty good and I can still get into this nice dress and
fool everyone into thinking I’m still a knockout.”

A Note from Dr. Mollace
T
he people of Calabria made us scratch our
heads. Why were they so healthy? Much like
the French Paradox that ignited the world
of science regarding weight gain; the Italian
Secret of heart health (and weight management
too) in the population of Calabria has piqued the
interest of the research community again.
My fellow researchers and I began trying to
unravel “The Secret” with a 30-day, doubleblind, placebo-controlled study with 191 human
participants with metabolic syndrome (equally
divided between men and women) who had
high cholesterol, high LDL, high triglycerides,
and high blood glucose levels. Participants
received 100 ml of Bergamot juice every day.
At the end of the study, participants saw up
to a 36% decrease in serum cholesterol, 42%
decrease in LDL cholesterol, and 56% increase
in HDL Cholesterol.
• The 42% decrease in LDL cholesterol was
equivalent to or greater than the drop for
those taking 10 mg of Atorvastatin and
40 mg of Simva.

triglycerides are one of the most important
markers for determining your cardiac health!
Triglyceride levels measure the fats in your
blood; if your triglyceride levels are high, it is a
cause for great concern.
• Study participants saw a startling 38%
decrease in triglycerides levels!
In a new round of testing, we used a
concentrated extract of Bergamot and included
all the polyphenols in the pith and meat of the
fruit. For this round, 238 participants were
involved in a 30-day double-blind, placebocontrolled study. The people receiving the real
Bergamot were further subdivided into those
who took 500 mg/day and 1,000 mg/day.
At the end of the study, LDL cholesterol had
dropped by 24% and 36%, respectively, for those
who received Bergamot! Further, participants
saw a drop in triglycerides of 29.9% and 38.8%
respectively. Good cholesterol (HDLs) increased
22.9% and 40.1% respectively. Additionally,
both groups saw an 18.8%-22.3% drop in blood
glucose levels.

Some people are genetically predisposed to

HE ANSWER IS QUITE CLEAR. You might be missing the third
pillar in preventive health, which is the mind-body connection.
In order to boost and sustain the health of your immune system, nervous system and better deal with stress, you should include
mind-body practices to your health routine. Intention, meditation,
mind-body integration might be expressions you’ve heard in the past
and wondered how they fit in your daily routine.
How can mind-body practices help
heal your body?
According to the Department of Health and Human
Services, 70% of diseases are preventable, yet
most people are unaware of this figure. Nor
how they can participate and become the
healers of their own health.
While most exercises focus on building muscles or endurance, mind-body
practices pay special attention to the
body as a whole unit. These techniques
allow for regulation and regeneration of the
circulatory system, nervous, digestive, and lymphatic system, and the body’s internal organs.
One of the most popular practices is Qigong (pronounced
“chee gong”) with its slow and graceful movements combined
with mental concentration and relaxed breathing. It increases
and balances a person’s vital energy or life force (qi). Exercise
performed with intention, being in “the present moment” with
both your mind and your body benefits the long-term effects of
preventive medicine as well as chronic health concerns.
The word Qigong is a combination of two ideas: “Qi” means
breath of life, air while “gong” means the self-discipline of working,

Qigong is considered a way of being and not just a physical exercise system or healing practice. While there are thousands of Qigong
systems practiced around the world, the most popular ones are Tai
Chi, Kung Fu, or Vinyasa Flow Yoga (focusing on specific movements).
Both Tai Chi and Kung Fu are martial arts forms of Qigong; the former
is gentler and emphasizes internal strength while the latter is more
physical and emphasizes external strength.
You can choose the style of Qigong that best suits your needs.
Some people prefer single, standing motions and others enjoy slower
movements. Find a form of Qigong that you feel will be beneficial. If
you get tired of it or are not convinced, try another style. Your mind
and body will let you know what is best for you.

New studies reveal that the current recommended
daily amount may not be enough.

itamin D helps your body absorb calcium to help maintain
strong bones and teeth. Studies also link it to immune and
cardiovascular health. The FDA currently recommends
400 IU (about 1 mg) of vitamin D daily, but new studies
are revealing that this amount is outdated and highly
insufficient. The Vitamin D Council, a nonprofit organization that
researches vitamin D deficiency, currently recommends taking 5000
IU of vitamin D daily.
Vitamin D is fat soluble and your body stores natural reserves
of it. Your skin naturally produces vitamin D when it is exposed to
UV rays in sunlight, which is why vitamin D is often referred to as
the “sunshine vitamin.” People who live in colder climates with long
winters and those who spend very little time outdoors are therefore
more prone to vitamin D deficiency.

Plant and Animal Sources of Vitamin D
Two varieties of vitamin D—D2 and D3—are of particular importance to people. There are few natural dietary sources of D2 (or ergocalciferol), but it can be obtained from plant sources such as leafy
greens and some types of mushrooms. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)
is found in fatty fish (such as tuna, mackerel, and salmon), beef liver, and
egg yolks. However, most

supplement.”
To raise your vitamin D levels, try taking 5000 IU per day for two
to three months then have your physician perform a 25-hydroxyvitamin D test. Gradually adjust your intake so that blood levels are
between 50-80 ng/ml year-round. And as always, make sure to step
outside and get some fresh air and sunlight once in a while so you
can soak up Mother Nature’s glory, and some natural vitamin D.
Vitamin D in the News
Vitamin D deficiency has been highlighted by many
celebrities, including Oprah and Dr. Oz. Symptoms
may include fatigue, joint and muscle discomfort,
weight fluctuations, and a weakened immune system.
Research has even linked vitamin D to neurological
health.
A 2009 study by the University of Colorado, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that
up to 75% of American teens and adults lacked sufficient vitamin D in their diet. Dr. Adit Ginde, a researcher
in the University of Colorado study, attributed this high
level to more people spending less time outdoors due to
an increased sedentary lifestyle. Also, more people may
be overly conscious of contracting skin cancer by exposing themselves to UV light and end up getting no sun at
all instead of regular, controlled amounts.
Usually, 20-30 minutes of uncovered exposure to
sunlight produces about 10,000 IUs of vitamin D in your
skin, which is more than enough to supply your daily
vitamin D requirements. Therefore, about 10 minutes of
sunshine should do the trick for most people. According
