Established in 1899, the Louisiana Baptist Children's
Home and Family Ministries is a faith-based 501(c)(3)
nonprofit organization dedicated to providing love, care,
and hope in Christ to children and families in need. The
Children's Home is an agency of the Louisiana Baptist
Convention and is governed by a 17-member board of
trustees elected by the Convention to serve three-year
terms on a rotating basis.
The Children's Home receives no state or federal funding. Approximately 75% of all funding comes from individuals and churches; less than 22% of funding goes to
administrative costs; less than 5% of funding comes from
payment of services.

Recently one of our teenagers sent me a thank you note. She said that she
was amazed to know that people really cared about her and loved her. She went
on to say that this was the type of family she really needs.
I am forwarding that note to you because she was actually thanking you
for making her new home possible. Without you she could not have the loving
support that she described in her note. Thank you so much.
In the September edition of the HomeNews I always give you a sneak preview of our annual report to the churches. This past year has been incredible!
With all of our new ministries in place you helped us reach over 6,000 children, families, and individuals in need. Here
are the numbers.

In addition, through our new ministry, Reclaimed, you helped us provide trauma counseling for 6 victims of human
trafficking and residential care for 3 HT victims.
Throughout the year, because of the great investment you have made in the lives of these precious people, many were
changed forever as they trusted Christ to be their Savior and Lord. That is truly the greatest news for our report this year
and every year.
I simply cannot thank you enough for providing the funds needed to expand our work and reach so many with the
love and care they need. Please know how grateful we are for your support.
Camp Was “All About Kids!”
One of the many fun activities enjoyed by LBCH residents this summer
was a camp sponsored by All About Kids Productions. The camp is led by
college students who spend their summer traveling around the U.S., using
their artistic expertise to help kids learn about God, as they learn creative arts.
This year's theme was "A Hiding Place." Songs, Scripture memory, and
dramas presenting the stories of the prodigal son and David and Goliath, presented opportunities for the children to learn about God's love, protection and
provision. On Friday night, participants, ages 7 to 17, skillfully and enthusiastically performed for an appreciative audience the songs and skits they had
learned during the week, as well as showing off some awesome rhythm skills
in the bucket band!
This was the second summer to have AAKP on our campus to lead the
week-long camp. We can't wait 'til next year!!

The Value of Giving
On the wall of President Lyndon Johnson's White House office
hung a framed letter written by General Sam Houston to Johnson's
great-grandfather, George W. Baines, more than a hundred years earlier. Baines had led Houston to Christ and the general was a changed
man, no longer coarse and belligerent, but peaceful and content.
After General Houston was baptized, which was an incredible event
for those who knew him, he offered to pay half the local minister's
salary. When someone asked him why, he said, "My pocketbook was
baptized too." Sam Houston demonstrated the reality of God's grace to him by sharing that grace with others
through giving.
God's covenant people began to learn the value of tithing (required giving) very early. Long before the
law of Moses, Abraham tithed to the high priest Melchizedek (Genesis 14:20). Jacob promised a tithe to the
Lord (Genesis 28:22). God declared the value of tithing in Deuteronomy 14:23, "…so that you may learn to
revere the LORD your God always." Tithing is intended to train God's people to put Him first in their lives.
Tithing reminds us that all we are and all we have is from the Lord.
The tithe was never intended to be a ceiling for giving, only a floor. Whereas the tithe was a demonstration of obedience, voluntary offerings were a demonstration of love, joy, gratitude, and worship.
In preparation for his son Solomon to build the temple, King David said, "I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided" (1 Chronicles
29:3). Family and tribal leaders followed David's example and gave willingly and generously. Then "the people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the Lord"
(1 Chronicles 29:6-9).
In response to the incredible outpouring of this voluntary giving through God's people, David prayed to
the Lord:
Who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything
comes from You, and we have given You only what comes from Your hand… It comes from Your hand,
and all of it belongs to You… All these things have I given willingly and with honest intent. And now I
have seen with joy how willingly Your people who are here have given to You. O Lord, God of our
fathers… Keep this desire in the hearts of Your people forever, and keep their hearts loyal to You. (1
Chronicles 29:14, 16-18)
The Israelites tithed because God told them to. They gave above and beyond in voluntary offerings
because they wanted to. If God's people had not first learned the discipline of tithing, they would have never
discovered the joy of voluntary giving!
Thank you for sharing your "voluntary giving" with the children and families we serve! You demonstrate
the value of giving every time you share with those in need through our Annual Children's Home Sunday
Offering, VBS Mission Offerings, Back-To-School gifts, Fall Food Roundup, and Cooperative Program gifts.
Thank you for demonstrating the reality of God's grace by sharing His grace with others through giving!

Stephanie, a resident of Love Cottage, celebrated her 16th
birthday with her cottage family and brother, Stephen,
a resident of Faith Cottage.
Dear Friend of Children,
I hope you're having a great summer! Our boys and girls have been experiencing summer camp, attending Vacation Bible School, and spending time in the pool.
It's hard to believe the old school bell will ring in just a few short weeks!
Back-to-school needs! Just imagine outfitting all our boy and girls with shoes, socks, pants, shirts, dresses, blouses, and underwear. School supplies and activity
fees will be needed for the new school year. Think about eye exams and new glasses, dental exams and new braces. The costs really add up!
Many of our children come to us with little more than the clothes they are wearing. That was the case with eight-year-old Janice* and her two younger siblings.
With an absentee father and a grandmother unable to provide adequate care, Janice and her younger brother and sister literally came to us with the clothes on their
backs.
These precious children have really flourished since coming into our care. Janice made excellent grades this year and is looking forward to starting third grade.
With the godly influence of her cottage parents and Sunday School teachers, she recently asked her cottage mom what it meant to have a relationship with God. The
Lord is working in her tender heart!
With your help, we can continue to demonstrate Christ's compassion and concern for Janice and all the children He brings into our care. Thank you for your support in getting our children back-to-school this year. Thank you for caring so much!

Mobile Pregnancy
Care Center Celebrates
2 Years of Ministry
The Mobile Pregnancy Care Center is celebrating its second
anniversary! This vital, lifesaving ministry partners with churches,
associations, pregnancy resource centers, parish festivals, health
fairs, organizations, and businesses all across the state providing free
pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, and a positive Christian witness. The
MPCC provided a pro-life witness to over 1,900 women in 2012.
Many new volunteers received training at several statewide locations.
At an MPCC outreach event, volunteers serve as greeters,
observers or peer counselors. From the moment clients are greeted, to
the one-on-one counseling sessions, they are made to feel welcome
and at ease. MPCC staff hope to share pro-life information and lifechanging spiritual principles as they interact with clients at these varied outreach events.
MPCC staff work hard to make
the time clients spend in the ultrasound room very special. Cindy
Kouf, our MPCC registered nurse,
says, "We've seen babies from seven
weeks forward. It never gets old seeing a baby's heart beating or movement that's not yet felt by the mother." After obtaining the ultrasound

ensure the mother will choose life for her unborn child," Cindy
shares.

Y The Heart of a Child Y
Mikayla is a seven-and-a half-year-old who lives
in Roseland, Louisiana, with her dad and mom,
Michael and Karla Douglas. Mikayla's grandparents,
Mitchell and Jodi Warren, have been supporting the
Children's Home for a number of years, often delivering their Fall Food Roundup items to the Monroe
campus.
After learning about the Children's Home from
her grandparents, Mikayla decided to do something
to help the children who live there. She developed
her "business plan" that involved establishing a
lemonade stand and selling lemonade and cookies.
Mikayla used fresh lemons growing in her backyard
from a lemon tree that was bearing an abundant harvest this year.
After putting her business plan into action, Mikayla worked hard selling lots of delicious,
homemade lemonade and tasty cookies. She said she had to sample some of the cookies along the
way. Of course, any good salesperson knows that product testing is essential to being successful in
making the sale! I'm sure Mikayla's beautiful smile and bubbly personality also contributed greatly to the success of her sales.
Most importantly, her heart demonstrated her desire to help other children! That's such a beautiful picture of unselfish, unconditional love! A seven-and-a half-year-old little girl who wants to
help other children that she doesn't even know. No wonder Jesus said in Mark 10:14, "Let the little children come to Me. Don't stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."
What a joy to meet Mikayla and her family! How thrilling to watch Mikayla present her gift
of $200 to help the children in our care!
Jesus also said, "I assure you: Whoever does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little
child will never enter it" (Mark 10:15). Wow! Thank you Mikayla for your generous gift! And
thank you for reminding us of our need for childlike humility and unselfish love!

fun time together in the LBCH recreation center.

Adoption Roundtables Recruiting Families
for Louisiana's Modern-Day Orphans
Louisiana Family Forum, in partnership with Louisiana Baptist Children's Home & Family Ministries, has sponsored Adoption
Roundtables across the state, inviting pastors and others who are interested in helping to find Christian homes for children waiting
for families in state foster care. Over 4,000 children are currently in state foster care and more than 300 of these modern-day
orphans need to find a permanent home through adoption.
Louisiana Family Forum's vision is to connect with 100 churches to identify a family within their congregation to adopt a child
from state foster care and then to surround that family with additional assistance and support. Gene Mills, president of Louisiana
Family Forum, shared, "Imagine a place where every child, including those in Louisiana's foster care system, is a wanted child. The
church should find this message of adoption, redemption and unconditional love intuitive!"
The first Roundtable was held in West Monroe, featuring Willie Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame. Willie shared his family's
story of adoption through a passionate presentation entitled, "Don't Duck Your Dynasty." He encouraged those present to give priority attention to meeting the needs of these most vulnerable children awaiting a forever family. "Watching your adopted child grow
up and knowing you had a part in changing that child's life, is a tremendous blessing," Robertson shared.
Dr. Perry Hancock, LBCHFM president and CEO, participated in a
panel discussion with other leaders to help explain both the needs
and the opportunities to meet the needs of these modern-day
orphans. "Our Children's Home staff is ready to assist families and
churches in developing foster and adoption ministries that will provide the love, care, and hope these children so desperately need,"
Hancock stated.

Shreveport Pastor and Church Family Putting James 1:27 into Practice
"Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world" (James 1:27,
HCSB). Just as God comes to the aid of those in need, those who practice "pure and undefiled religion" "look after orphans and widows," the most vulnerable members of society.
Chad Hardbarger, senior pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Shreveport, and his wife, Marsha, are passionate about implementing James 1:27 in their family and their church family. "Most churches do a great job of taking care of the widows, but how many
of them take care of the orphans?" Marsha Hardbarger asks.
In 8 years, the Hardbargers have fostered 13 children. Some have stayed in their home as little as 24 hours, but 5 have found a permanent home through adoption. Monique (18), Chris (13), Bryce (10), Jordan (8), Gavyn (6), and soon to be adopted Bailey (7) are not
only a part of the Hardbarger family, they have all become members of God's forever family through faith in Jesus Christ!
Marsha shares, "We show the love of God, the Father, by how we love these vulnerable children. Not only that, but adoption is the
greatest picture of God's love for us and it opens the door for us to tell others of His grace. According to Ephesians 1:4-6, God planned
to adopt us all along into His forever family, which means adoption is His "Plan A."
To help fulfill James 1:27, Emmanuel Baptist Church has started a ministry called "Fashioned for a Home" to raise awareness of
the need for Christians to become more involved in the care of foster children and orphans. On Saturday, November 2, 2013, the church
will host a workshop produced by Family Life's "Hope for Orphans" where all avenues for adoption, including private, domestic, international, and foster care will be discussed. The church family is also in the process of putting supplies together in "Dignity Bags" for
children who are entering foster care for the first time. In the future, members hope to go on mission trips to orphanages, to open a
school uniform closet for foster parents, and to provide respite outings for foster and adoptive families. The Hardbargers believe "with God all things are possible!"

of Louisiana Baptist churches and families is providing foster, adoption, and orphan care ministries to the modern-day orphans in Louisiana foster care and to orphaned and

Louisiana Baptists Minister In Nicaragua

Orphans Embrace, a ministry of Louisiana Baptist Children's Home, sponsored a mission trip to
Diriamba, Nicaragua in July that included team members from Cheniere Baptist in West Monroe, First
Baptist of Monroe, Bonita Road Baptist in Bastrop, Corinth Baptist in Georgetown, Eastwood Baptist in
Haughton, Crestview Baptist in Farmerville and Trinity Baptist in West Monroe. The group worked with
Nicaraguan Christian Outreach, a Louisiana-based ministry, and assisted with construction of a new dormitory wing at Emmanuel Home of Protection, a children's home for abused girls; served at Colegio
Christiano, a Christian day school for grades PreK-12; assisted with a children's feeding program and
clothing distribution in several neighborhoods, and distributed beans and rice to needy families in the
impoverished neighborhoods surrounding the city's landfill.
Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere, and many of the children suffer from malnutrition. This was witnessed first-hand during the mission trip, especially as the team ministered in the neighborhoods near the city's landfill. The only sources of income for many of the families living near the landfill are from selling plastic and metal obtained by combing through mountains
of garbage at the landfill. Through God's provision, this mission team prayed with families and provided the families with a week's worth of beans and rice in over 165 homes surrounding the landfill. The
team also assisted in serving meals to 300-400 children each day at neighborhood feeding sites.
Because of the generosity of so many Louisiana Baptists supporting this mission team, God provided for other needs that were met above and beyond what was originally planned for the trip. School
shoes and socks were provided for over 200 students at Colegio Christiano, grocery staples were provided for four of the students' families who were experiencing extreme hardships, and clothing and
undergarments were provided for children residing at Emmanuel Home of Protection. A new roof was
also built for the home of a single mother suffering from terminal cancer. This need became known when
the team stopped at the home to pray with the family. Upon entering the home, several team members
noticed a Bible lying on the mother's bed. It was learned that the mother had been praying and crying
out to God for help just moments before the team arrived.
Peggy Moffett, LBCH mission team member, shared these thoughts about her Nicaragua mission
experience: "The next time you sit down for a meal, just imagine what a very small bowl of rice and
chicken stock means to a hungry child. The sadness in the dark eyes of the mothers that can't feed their
children! I sit and think, Lord, what if that were me and my children? I want to encourage others to go
to the mission field that God has called them to serve and spread the love of Jesus."
Orphans Embrace will sponsor several mission trips in 2014 including Nicaragua, Haiti and
Guatemala. Volunteers are needed and all trips will focus on ministering to orphans and children in need.

Another season has come and gone and we are facing the onset of Fall here at
HomePlace. My favorite time of the year is Autumn! The mornings are cooler…the
smells in the air replace the summertime blues… new school clothes are always exciting… pumpkins and mums partner once again and the brilliant colors burn of God's
glory. Also, if it were not for Fall, I would have missed out on Candy Corn, ChiliFrito Pies, S'Mores and Caramel Apples. Needless to say, Autumn fills up our senses and is necessary for us to draw nearer to our Creator.
Since our last newsletter, several milestones have been accomplished. We
enrolled eight children into school. Sharquila obtained her driver's license as well as
began working her third job. Sandy and Jess began attending their classes at Delta. I
might add that Sandy is also working three jobs while finishing up her associate
degree at Delta. Her primary job is already a forty-hour job. Sydney started at ULM
and begins her new job this week. Carrington landed a forty-hour job and is preparing to move into her own apartment with her two boys by the end of the month.
Toni is now enrolled in Christian Women's Job Corp while working thirty hours
a week. Kim begins working in a matter of days at her new job. Tina moved in this
month with a three-week-old precious baby girl and is waiting to start Christian
Women's Job Corp in three more weeks. Mae began her second job this month.
Stacey is working forty hours a week and raising three children. Meaghan is volunteering her time in community hours while starting her new job. And KeKe is taking
an on-line college class while working part-time.
Keep in mind that many of these women are doing this without their own transportation. They are all attending church on Sundays and Wednesdays. In addition,
they are attending Bible Study, Parenting Classes and Nutrition Classes once a week.
As the Psalmist penned, our precious Lord gives us “strength for strength.”
Once again, I want to thank each one of you who pray for, give to, and serve in
HomePlace. We could not do it without your service through the Spirit of the Living
God. A special thanks to HomePlace friend, Kathy Danna, who so graciously volunteered all summer. My prayer is that our God continues to fill our senses with the season of Autumn, but most importantly, He fills us up with the fullness of HIM!
