Speak Live with Roane State Educators Living Underwater
Everyone is invited to a live video chat with biology professor Bruce Cantrell and adjunct
professor Jessica Fain, who will be speaking from the underwater habitat where they have
lived since Oct. 3. The video chat session will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2 in
Room 107 in the Goff Health Sciences and Technology Building on the Oak Ridge campus.
Cantrell and Fain are staying in Jules’ Undersea Lodge on Key Largo in the Florida Keys.
They have faced the psychological challenge of living 25 feet underwater in a space that’s
300 square feet and the physical challenge of living without sunlight.
Workshop Will Address The Basics of Negotiation for Women
A University of Tennessee expert will discuss “The Basics of Negotiation for Women” during
a free forum on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 3:30 p.m. at the Oak Ridge campus. The forum,
presented by the Social Science, Business and Education Division, will be held in room 107
in the new Goff Health Sciences and Technology Building. The public is invited. The speaker
is Mary Mahoney, assistant director of recruiting, University of Tennessee Career Services.
Mahoney has presented numerous workshops on resume preparation, interviewing skills,
networking, business/dining etiquette, salary negotiation and job search strategy.

Blood Drive Set for Dec. 2, Roane County Campus
The Roane County campus will host a blood drive on Tuesday, Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Medic Regional Blood Center’s bloodmobile will be located beside the gym. All blood types
are needed. Medic Regional Blood Center provides blood and blood products to many

Complete Your Bachelor’s Degree through King University Partnership
King University has joined with Roane State to bring two accelerated degree-completion
programs to Roane State’s main campus: Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor
of Science in Nursing for Registered Nurses (RN-BSN). Take your associate’s a step further
and complete your bachelor’s through King University’s fully accredited programs. Classes
meet one night per week (one additional class per month for RN-BSN students), and qualified
students can complete their degree in as little as 16 months. For more information on any of

Interested in Earning a Bachelor’s Degree? Learn More About This TTU Program
Tennessee Tech University offers a Fast Track BS in Interdisciplinary Studies. This 2+2
degree is designed for full-time working adults. Students are able to apply an earned AA, AS,
or AAS (post 1994), toward a BS degree. Evening classes are held twice a week on the
Roane State campuses in Cumberland, Scott and Oak Ridge. This degree combines
accelerated classes and full-term classes.
Students are able to complete 12 hours per semester. Employees of Roane State can take
advantage of their tuition discounts to complete a BS degree close to home with the high

Host Families Needed for International Students
Host families provide a bed, meals and a place to study. The families do not have to provide
transportation or buy any personal items for the students.
Occasionally, host families may be asked to volunteer as drivers for field trips, but
participation is optional. Roane State’s international students range in age from 18-22 and
speak English, although skill levels vary. A support system composed of college staff
members and other host families will provide assistance. For more information or to

Stargaze at Observatory
Enjoy the evening skies at the Tamke-Allan Observatory on the first and third Saturdays of
each month. The stargazes at the observatory on Watts Bar Lake are free and open to the
public. Activities begin at 7 p.m. Visitors will be welcomed by a program in the observatory

Diversity Corner
December 1 is World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day, observed on December 1 every year, is
dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection.
As of 2013, AIDS has killed more than 36 million people worldwide (1981-2012), and an
estimated 35.3 million people are living with HIV, making it one of the most important global
public health issues in recorded history. Despite recent improved access to antiretroviral
treatment in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claims an estimated 2 million lives
each year, of which about 270,000 are children.
