Vascular & Interventional Radiology What is a Interventional Radiology? At Iowa Methodist Medical Center Interventional Radiology, (IR or VIR for Vascular and Intervention Radiology) is also known as Image-Guided Surgery or Procedural Radiology. Interventional Radiologists are medical doctors who specialize in doing medical procedures that use radiology. Interventional Radiology allows us to diagnose or treat patients with the most minimally invasive technique Charles A. De Pena, M.D. possible. Images are used to guide small instruments, Olaf Kaufman, M.D., PhD including needles and catheters. The images provide road maps that allow the Interventional Radiologist to guide these instruments through the body to the areas of concern. Iowa Radiology at Iowa Methodist Medical Center is located at 1200 Pleasant Street in Des Moines. Valet parking is free at the main entrance. To register, enter at the main entrance and continue straight until you see the registration desk on your left at the North Wing of the Medical Center.
