Should We Lose
Our Lake ?
We, residents, plead ignorance or helplessness,
and continue to concretize
the city, at the cost of losing our natural forest cover
and water bodies.
Meanwhile, the government continues to use lack
of
funds
as
its
mahamantra.
Studies have proved that
the major contributor to disappearance of lakes is urban flooding.
Concerned citizens, environmentalists and lake protection groups have been
knocking on the doors of
concerned departments,
begging them to take action
against illegal encroachment of lakes and storm
water drains.
A few officials are responsive, but most of them
seem to be elusive.
For instance, crores of
rupees, poured into reviving our Halagevaderahalli
Lake, seem to have gone
waste.
The encroached storm
water drains, supposed to
be the main channels for the
lake to receive rain water,
get sewage instead (see picture).
Can we afford to lose
another lake? If not, what
can be done about it ?

Mission Possible – Clean Rajarajeshwari Nagar !
Reading Series
Veena Rajappa of Clean and Green Mission Team argues for a pro-active
approach to save our neighbourhood from becoming GARBAGE NAGAR.
Read in the next issue what can be done and how to go about it.
Fact 1: Rajarajeshwari Nagar is dirty. We see garbage dumped on
almost all streets.
Fact 2: Garbage collectors of BBMP are irregular.
Fact 3: Most working families can’t be at home waiting for
the collectors. They are forced to dump waste on the roadside.
Fact 4: BBMP has not provided bins for dumping garbage when
we are unable to give it to the collectors.
Result: People end up throwing garbage in the open and a dirty and
garbage filled Rajarajeshwari Nagar.
We blame BBMP and they blame us, but no one seems to do anything about it.
While BBMP have their obligations to the public, before blaming them,
let us realize that we are the sufferers, not they.
Is there a simple solution ?
Thankfully yes. Garbage can be completely eliminated.
Rajarajeshwari Nagar can be clean.
What it needs is a little initiative by every one of us...
