FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
Dear Families
All the best to the Year 10 and 11 students for their final block exams. It
is so important that students have the support from home to be able to
do their best. The Year 12 students finished in a very positive way and
we will look forward to their results which will be posted out from the
Queensland Curriculum Assessment Authority on Friday 19 December
2014.
This week we farewell our Year 12’s. At the Graduation Ceremony we
presented students with a certificate and gift. There were 6 students who
we especially recognised who have attended Kelvin Grove school from
Year 1 to 12. These students include: Kina Gerdsen-Sargeant, Daniel
Hannay, Elise May, Amber Ramsay, Jack Wilkins and Liam Wogan. This
number is growing each year.
Congratulations to all our Year 12’s on achieving this milestone. The
ceremony gave all the opportunity to reflect on the years spent at Kelvin
Grove - students, families and staff. I am confident they are well prepared
for their future journey in our community. I know great futures await!
On 3 December and the 10 December we are also celebrating milestones
for our Year 9 and Year 5 students respectively. At these ceremonies we
will be recognising the transition to the next sub-school. This is special as
well as our students move into another area of the college. Our P & C
have generously donated a small gift of a college badge to recognise the
importance of this for our students and families. We are very grateful to
the P & C for providing this memento of this occasion. 100 of our Junior
School students move into our Middle School and 220 of our Middle
School students are moving into our Senior School.
We do have many students joining the college at the beginning of 2015
with a significant intake in Year 7 and 8 in our Middle School, in additional
to the usual growth we experience in our Senior School. There are a
number of orientation programs for these new students in each of the subschools to help them settle into the college and understand what it means
to be a KG student. Fortunately during the year we have been preparing
for this additional intake with the new building coming on line from January
2015, and importantly more eating areas for our students in both subschools in this part of our college.
Finally, with the additional students will come additional staff in different
parts of the college. Staffing in all parts of the college has not been
finalised yet, and will only be confirmed late in the year, or in the week
prior to the commencement of school. However, I can inform you that our
Executive Group will include: Duncan Steel and Angelique Strawbridge as
our Senior School Principal and Deputy Principal, Mike Loftus and Linda
Greitschus as our Middle School Principal and Deputy Principal and
Damien Greig as our Junior School Principal – all permanent
appointments.

Year 11 Non-Campers
For Year 11 students not participating in the Year 11 Camp from
Tuesday 25 November – Friday 28 November, they will be participating
in classroom work during this time. Therefore normal school procedures
for absences will need to be followed. Please note on Tuesday at
9.00am, students will be completing their CPR training. This is a
mandatory requirement of all students before they exit Year 12.
First day of school for 2015
In 2015 the first day of school will be Wednesday 28 January. Students
will report in their uniform at 9.00am to the College Hall. During this time
they will be issued their timetable and diary. Period 5 classes will begin
from Thursday 29 January. Textbooks will be issued during the first two
weeks of next year during lesson times.
Year 12 Leadership Positions for 2015
All Year 12 leadership positions will be decided by Friday 28 November.
Students who have gained a position will receive in the mail a Year 12
Buddies Program letter and Senior SRC Development Camp letter. The
SRC Leadership Camp will occur from Sunday 1 February until Tuesday
3 February.

FROM THE DESK OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
The end of the year is rapidly approaching and this is the time of the year
when things get really busy in the Middle School. I would like to remind
you of a number of events that are occurring over the next few weeks.
Firstly, our Middle School Awards Night will take place on Tuesday 2 nd
December commencing at 7pm in the College Hall. This is followed the
next day, Wednesday 3rd December with the Year 9 Graduation Ceremony
at 12 noon in the College Hall. Invites for both of these events have been
sent out and I am hoping that both events will be supported by our
community.
That penultimate week is finished off with our first ever Grand Final of the
Middle School Talent Competition. This will take place on Friday 5th
December commencing at 11am in the College Hall. There have been
numerous heats throughout the semester and we are now down to the
final 10 acts. I can assure you that there will be some serious talent on
display and all parents and relatives are cordially invited.

Year

competed in the Brainways Quest last
week. Congratulations are in order as
they achieved a 3rd placing in a very
competitive environment. They solved
complex problems and had to work as a team. These students will now
represent Kelvin Grove State College in the State final to be held this
Saturday 22 November at Griffith University.
Science Excursion
On Tuesday 18th November, Year 2s gamed the post G20 Summit to
attend the Science Centre at South Bank. Year 2 students were budding
scientists experimenting with resources in the Body and Action Zone.
Favourites in these zones were the spinning chair, running track and
turning tunnel. Next Year 2 attended the Show Zone. In the scientist’s
laboratory they learnt all about planets and gases. Rockets were made
and flown around the lab. Finally, Year 2 entered the Top Secret
Zone. In there they became spies and cracked many clues in order to
solve the mystery of who stole the powerful computer chip from the
Brainiac Corporation. Year 2 would like to thank the parents who helped
to make it a successful day.
Last week two teams from the Middle School represented the college in
the Regional Finals of the Brainways Quest Challenge for Gifted Students.
This competition attracts teams from across SE Qld and the majority are
from the private sector. Our Year 9 consisting of Callum Lockhart,
Xandache West and Olivia McKenzie-Ross just missed out on a place in
the State Final but by all accounts acquitted themselves well over the two
days of intense competition. However, I am delighted to inform you that
our Year 6 team, consisting of Natacia Slade, Rosa Flynn-Smith and
Jordan Meijers progressed through to the State Finals at Griffith University
this Saturday! We wish them well.
Book Swap
Junior School Library Book Swap was a great
success. Thank you for all the lovely books that were
donated. Students loved the good quality choices and
they were able to take home some lovely books. We
raised $425.00 for the Indigenous Literacy
Foundation. The remaining books will be donated to
schools in New Guinea. Thanks especially to the SRC
and the Year 5 students who helped at the Book Swap. We hope to
make this an annual event.

Free Microsoft software for students’ personal computers
All state school students from Prep–Year 12 can now download multiple
free copies of the Microsoft Office 2013 Suite to their personal home and
mobile computer equipment.
Students who want the free software will need an active Managed
Internet Service (MIS) login, school email account and password —
those who don‘t should come to the College TechHub for help. Go to
https://login.microsoftonline.com/ and login using your child’s EQ
username and password.
FOOTBALL EXCELLENCE NEWS
Well another year for the Football Excellence Program is nearly complete
with our Year 12’s just leaving. This year’s senior group have been great
role models for our younger players displaying exceptional leadership,
behaviour, work ethic and character. This group of Year 12’s has assisted
in developing a very good culture within the program and will be greatly
missed. Our next year’s group certainly have a high benchmark to follow.
This year has been a busy one again and will culminate with the England
and Spain tour leaving on December 5 visiting London, Manchester and
Barcelona with coaching sessions at clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool,
Everton, Manchester City and Barcelona as well as seeing Premier
League and Europa League games, stadium tours, playing against
overseas opposition and sightseeing.
TENNIS NEWS
Kelvin Grove wins through to State tennis finals!
Last weekend in stifling heat our development tennis teams competed in
the Metropolitan North section of the Brisbane International Primary
Schools Challenge. Our number one team of Bogdan Lujic, Lazar Lujic,
Ryan Wang and Jonathan Barber were successful in winning the
tournament defeating Brisbane Grammar in the final. They now qualify
to compete in the state finals at the Brisbane International from Jan 8 th11th
The annual Sports Excellence Dinner was also recently held with AFL
great Michael Voss the guest speaker and former student Adam Sarota
inducted into the hall of fame. Adam is a past student currently on loan to
the Brisbane Roar from Utrecht in Holland and has represented the
Socceroos on three occasions.
The program will now grow in 2015 to over 140 players over the six year
levels from Year 7-12 with a modified Year 6 program also commencing in
2015 adding more keen and enthusiastic footballers. The program over the
last 19 years has assisted many players in reaching their full potential as a
footballer as well as helping them achieve an education and career
prospects in their sport. I am certainly looking forward to next year with the
increased program.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS
Congratulations to our Year 12 Physical Education students who have
completed their final pieces of assessment, which included a synchronised
swimming routine. We had some fantastic performances, and the group
has finished with excellent overall results. Our Year 11’s will be completing
their performances during exam block, and we wish them all the best.
Year 8 and 9 HPE classes were lucky enough to have Claire from Life
Education as a guest in their classes in week 5. These classes are
studying Growth, Development and Drugs, and Risk Taking Behaviours
respectively. Claire was able to provide some very up to date information
for the students and add some great insight into decision making
particularly with respect to relationship education. We are very grateful to
Claire and the Life Ed team for their services.

HOD HPE, Sport and Sport Excellence
Over Friday 7 and Saturday 8 of November, more than a hundred
students (including 50 current and future KGSC students) from 21
schools accompanied by 37 teachers, designers and mentors, attended
“2 Day City”, part of KGSC Art’s “100 Futures” program, specially
adapted for State Library of Queensland’s Design Minds program. 2 Day
City, a mini “think tank” for urban design, was created for Year 6 and 7
students at KGSC to encourage connected and creative thinking about
real life challenges. Students involved voted on urban futures, attended
councils, negotiated wild-cards and responded to rapidly changing
scenarios as they constructed a prototype of Brisbane 2050. The
program was hosted by the EDGE at State Library of Queensland’s Asia
Pacific Design Library as part of the G20 cultural program and its legacy
will be innovative educational approaches focusing on “design thinking”.
KGSC Art is leading the State in this field, with new Art + Design
Excellence programs inspiring other middle school and senior programs
to explore creative-thinking approaches in curriculum.
Living City and Fig Tree Island
Just 2 hours on “Fig tree Island” in Eagle Street saw the culmination of
months of preparation by our senior Art and Design Excellence students
on “Living City 2014. On November 12, just before the G20 road
closures, our young designers went public on site with their interactive
design ideas, discussing future possibilities with the site users, local
office workers, business men and women, tourists and passers-by. The
idea is to suggest design possibilities that will extend the life of the site,
and ensure it remains a refuge and place of contemplation and
interaction for future citizens. Thanks to Genevieve Searle, City Planning
at BCC, Design educators at QUT and SLQ, and our two main
designer/artists in residence, Kylie Bickle and Sophie Munns for working
closely with our students in developing imaginative and provocative
design solutions for the site.
