You can get everything you need for a picnic, fresh and healthy meals, and so much more. The West End Farmers’ Market across the street from MBA in the Vine Street Christian Church parking lot is one of these fabulous markets. Convenient with loads of parking available and situated under shade trees, the West End Market is one of the best ways to spend your Saturday morning. They offer everything from Delvin Farm’s and Green Door Gourmet’s produce to multiple vendors offering their special creations from cheese to soaps to local honey. Three of the vendors there that are especially unique are Turnbull Farm’s flowers and arrangements, Alice Heffernan Salazar’s authentic, delicious corn tortillas, and the outstanding empanadas from Casa Segovia-Paz. I’ll start with the empanadas. They are beyond delicious. They reach perfection. The pastry is light, flakey, and cradles the rich, hearty fillings from beef or chicken to red beans or lentils. Loraine Segovia-Paz has a particularly deft hand at creating these pastry pockets with a South American flair. They are great for a snack, picnics, back yard parties—the list goes on. I can’t stress enough how good they are. I have returned twice just for the empanadas. I plan on going next Saturday, too. Delicious. Visit her website at www.casasegoviapaz.com for catering and ordering information. She also offers tamales and pupusas. Southwestern and Mexican recipes often call for corn tortillas. Most need to be substantial tortillas which stand up to baking in the oven in a deep rich mole or chile sauce or to add texture and flavor to soups. The corn tortillas made by Santo Niño de Atocha Tortilleria have a clean, distinct corn flavor and are hearty, perfect for specialty dishes and homemade fish tacos. They are especially tasty rolled up with a little butter and salt as an appetizer (anyone from Texas will know what I’m talking about here). Made with corn, lime, and water, these tortillas are a natural, delicious product that is locally sourced. Visit their webpage for more information on their products at www.santostortillas.com. Probably my favorite surprise at this market, and to my sheer delight, were the flowers and floral arrangements offered by Turnbull Creek Farm. Located in Bon Aqua, TN, they grow the most beautiful spring and summer flowers in Middle Tennessee. From bold, bright sunflowers to delicate, lacy Nigella Love-in-theMist, these flowers will make your home and table settings purely delightful. They also offer a unique bouquet—an edible bouquet filled with chamomile, calendula, rosemary, mint, and other fragrant herbs. Visit their website at www.turnbullcreekfarm.com. They also offer floral design services for weddings and events. Along with the acoustic bluegrass band that softly plays near the entrance, multiple food trucks, and fresh baked pies and pastries, the West End Farmers’ Market is one not to be missed.
