The Braves will have a new look in 2014-15, with the
team returning just three letterwinners from last year’s
squad in addition to welcoming nine newcomers this
season. Senior Michelle Young was an honorable mention AllMissouri Valley Conference pick last year after she was
seventh in the Valley in scoring with a 14.3 points-pergame average for the highest scoring average by a Brave
since 2001-02. Young, who led the MVC in free throws made with 137
as a junior, was the fifth player in program history with
400 points and 55 or more steals in a season. She is the
only senior and one of just three upperclassmen on a
roster which features six freshmen. Junior guard Fantasia Vine was the most accurate
three-point shooter on the team last season, making 36
percent of her shots from beyond the arc. Vine started
15 of 28 games and averaged 8.1 points per outing as a
sophomore.
Sophomore Leti Lerma was named to the MVC’s AllFreshman team after a late-season surge which saw her
average 6.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in league
play. Lerma started the final 11 games of the year and
averaged 9.3 points and 7.9 boards per contest over the
final seven outings. Sophomore transfers Charnelle Reed (Western Illinois)
and Whitney Tinjum (Washington State) give Bradley a
game #2 at depaul (11-18-14)

rare big east matchup
Bradley has played a total of 69 games against
current members of the Big East Conference, but 68
of those 69 contests came before those schools were
member of the Big East. The Braves have played a total
of four games against a team while they were members
of the Big East Conference with the lone victory coming
in the opening round of the 2010 Women’s Basketball
Invitational at then Big East member Louisville. new faces
Bradley had four newcomers in the starting lineup
Friday at Illinois-Chicago in the season opener, including
three freshmen. The Braves have not had four newcomers in the starting five of a season opener since 1984-85
when the starting five consisted of four first-year junior
college transfers and one returning junior (Lisa Cech). Freshman Tamya Sims led Bradley in scoring with 12
points and was the first freshman to lead the team
in scoring in a season opener since Katie Yohn had 16
points to open the 2009-10 campaign. Last game recap
Bradley trailed defending Women’s Basketball Invitational champion Illinois-Chicago by four (24-28) at the
half, but UIC took control of the game with a 21-3 to open
the second half as the Flames topped the Braves 71-43
Friday in the season opener. Freshman forward Tamya
Sims had 12 points, six boards and three blocks in the
setback. UIC had three players score in double figures,
with preseason First-Team Horizon League pick Ruvanna
Campbell collecting 11 points, 16 rebounds, three assists, four blocks and three steals. strong debut
Freshmen Tamya Sims led Bradley with 12 points, six
rebounds and three blocks in the season-opening setback at Illinois-Chicago Friday. Sims is the first Bradley
freshman to score in double figures in their debut since
Katie Yohn (16 points) and Olivia Allen (15 points) both
scored in double figures in the 2009-10 season opener
at Northern Illinois. Sims is the 11th Bradley freshmen
to score in double figures in their debut since the start
of the 1981-82 season and joins Hall of Fame member
Val Wancket and Kelly Krumwiede as the only freshmen
in school history to collect at least 12 points and six
boards in their first games as a Brave. points by bradley fr. in debut (since 1981-82)

youth movement
With nine newcomers on the roster, including six
freshmen, Bradley has arguably the youngest squad in
the Missouri Valley Conference. The Braves have nine
newcomers on a roster for the first time since 2001-02
and BU has six freshmen on a squad for the first time
since 2008-09 when Bradley had seven freshmen. With
only three upperclassmen, including a league-low one
senior, the Braves have the fewest upperclassmen in the
MVC. Wichita State, with three seniors and one junior, is
the only other Valley team to have fewer than five upperclassmen in 2014-15. Bradley’s three upperclassmen are
the fewest on the roster since 2002-03 when the Braves
had three seniors and no juniors. new kids on the block
Newcomers have had a history of making a big impact
for Bradley. With nine new players available for head
coach Michael Brooks and only three returning players,
the six freshmen, two sophomores and one junior will
certainly have opportunities to make an impact. The last
two times the Braves have had at least seven newcomers
on the roster they have improved their overall win total
by at least six games from the previous year. Bradley
had seven newcomers in 2008-09 and went on to finish
the year with a 21-10 overall mark in addition to a fourthplace MVC finish (11-7) after going 12-18 and 6-12 in Valley
play in 2007-08. The Braves had nine newcomers during
a 2001-02 campaign which resulted in a 16-12 overall
record and 7-11 MVC mark after going 10-17 overall and
5-13 in the Valley in 2000-01.
close calls
Bradley played a school season record 12 games
decided by five points or less last year and finished 201314 with a 6-6 record in those contests. The six victories
by five points or fewer was one short of matching the
school record of seven set during the 1991-92 season. The Braves are 3-1 in their last four games decided
by five points or fewer. The 12 games decided by five
points or less came a year removed from a then program
record 11 contests by the same margin. Under third-year
Bradley head coach Michael Brooks, the Braves have had
23 of 61 games (38 percent) decided five points or fewer. 2014-15 Bradley Women’s Basketball balanced attack
The only team in the MVC to have four individuals
score 9.9 points per game or more in 2013-14, Bradley
had three individuals with 300 or more points in a season for the first time since 2006-07. The 2013-14 season
saw six Braves average at least 8.1 points per contest. The only other team in school history to have six individuals average 7.5 points per game or more was the 1984-85
squad. Bradley was the only squad in the MVC to have
six individuals score 8.1 points per contest. Up Tempo
Bradley has ranked in the top three in the Missouri
Valley Conference in scoring each of the last three
seasons and the Braves have averaged better than 69
points per contest in each of third-year head coach
Michael Brooks’ first two seasons. Bradley, which was
third in the league at 69.7 points per game, averaged
more than 69 points per tilt in back-to-back seasons
for the first time since 1991-92 (71.6 ppg) and 1990-91
(72.6 ppg). Despite returning just three players from
last year’s squad, Bradley’s 2014-15 features nearly 40
percent of the team’s scoring from last year. forever young
Senior Michelle Young was an honorable mention
All-Missouri Valley Conference selection as a junior after
averaging 14.3 points per game. The fifth individual in
program history with 400 points and 55 or more steals in
a season, her scoring average was the best by a Bradley
individual since 2001-02. Young was the ninth player
in school history with a 400-point season prior to her
senior year and is the team’s active career scoring leader
with 717 points. Her 429 points in 2013-14 rank as the
10th best scoring output by a Brave prior to their senior
season. points scored in a season before senior

strong rookie campaign
Freshman Leti Lerma earned a spot on the Missouri
Valley Conference All-Freshman team last year after
averaging 6.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in
league play. She finished the year with 136 boards (5.0
per game) for the most rebounds by a Bradley freshman
since Sonya Harris corralled 137 boards as a frosh in
2007-08. Lerma, who was ninth in the Valley in rebounding in league play, came on late in the year to average
8.6 points and 7.4 boards per contest over the final eight
contests. She was just the fourth Brave to earn MVC
All-Freshman team honors in the last 10 years and was
the first Bradley freshman to average at least 5.0 points
and 5.0 rebounds per game since Harris in 2007-08. adding experience
Despite Bradley adding a total of nine newcomers
to the squad for 2014-15, the Braves welcomed three
experienced players with the addition of three transfers. Junior Sameia Kendall earned honorable mention WBCA
All-America honors at Johnson County Community College
as a sophomore in 2013-14 after she averaged 12.0
points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game
and the 5-8 guard helped her junior college to back-toback 30-2 seasons. Western Illinois transfer Charnelle
Reed sat out the 2013-14 season and will be eligible at
the start of the year after the 5-10 guard averaged 8.5
points per game and shot 40.2 percent from three-point
range as a freshman in 2012-13. Mid-year transfer
Whitney Tinjum will be eligible following the 2014 Fall
Semester. The 6-1 forward played in 12 games as a freshman at Washington State. The four-time North Suburban
Conference Player of the Year is the career scoring
and rebounding leader at Chisago Lakes High School in
Minnesota. Bradley has a NCAA Division I transfer on
the roster for the fifth consecutive year and the Braves
have had at least one Division I transfer all but one year
(2009-10) since the start of 2006-07. In fact, Bradley
has two NCAA Division I transfers for the first time since
1998-99. charity stripe
Part of Bradley’s offensive success in 2013-14 came
from the team’s ability to get to the free throw line. In
addition to ranking second in the MVC in free throw
percentage (72.6%), the Braves made a school season
record and Valley best 512 free throws. Bradley scored
a league-high 24.5 percent of its points from the charity
stripe. The previous record for free throws made in a
season was 499 made during the 34 games of the 201112. Bradley’s 17.1 made free throws per game was the
team’s highest average since making 17.7 per contest in
1987-88 and the squad’s 72.6 percent free throw shooting in 2013-14 ranked seventh in school history. Senior
Michelle Young led the MVC in made free throws, with
her 137 makes ranking as the third-best season total in
school history.

Junior guard Fantasia Vine was the team’s top threepoint shooter last year, connecting on 36.2 percent
of her attempts from long range. Vine, who broke her
nose early in Missouri Valley Conference play, averaged
9.8 points and 3.6 rebounds over her final 20 games
before she was forced to miss the final two games of
the season due to a broken finger. Vine has scored more
than double the points during her last 21 games (198)
than she did in the first 36 outings of her career (97). home court advantage
The Braves will play 15 home games in 2014-15 for the
most regular-season home contests since 1984-85 (15). In addition to playing the most regular-season home
games in 30 years, Bradley will have the longest home
stand in program history during 2014-15. After opening
the season with five consecutive road games, the Braves
will play the final six non-conference games of the year
at Renaissance Coliseum to kick off a school-record
eight-game home stand to break the previous record of
six consecutive home games to conclude the 1993-94
regular season. The Nov. 30 home contest against
Southeast Missouri State is the latest home opener
since 2002-03. on the road again
While Bradley’s newcomers will likely get a boost from
the longest home stand in school history (eight games),
the new Braves will have to learn to win away from home
first with BU opening the year with a five-game road
swing. Bradley opens the season on the road for the first
time since 2009-10 with the first four foes combining for
a 97-40 (.708) record last year. The season-opening road
swing starts Nov. 14 at defending Women’s Basketball Invitational champion Illinois-Chicago and includes backto-back games in the Chicagoland area with a Nov. 18
contest at defending Big East Champion DePaul, which
advanced to the Sweet 16 last March. The program’s
first trip to the state of Oklahoma for a Nov. 21 game
against Oklahoma (NCAA last year) falls before a trip to
New York for games at Stony Brook (WNIT) and Columbia. The Braves will play five or more games away from home
to open a season for the first time since 1992-93 (three
road & two neutral). filling it up
Senior Michelle Young scored in double figures a
team-high 19 times in 2013-14 and she has scored 10 or
more points in 28 of her last 44 games. Bradley’s active
career scoring leader with 717 points, she is 35th on
BU’s all-time scoring chart. Young is the 15th player in
program history to score 700 career points before the
end of their junior season. Fourteen of the 16 Braves
who have scored 1,000 career points had 700 or more
points before the start of their senior year. Young had
eight 20-point games last year and she was the first
non-senior to lead the team in scoring since Katie Yohn
did so as a freshman in 2009-10. Young has a chance
to become the first Bradley player to lead the team in
scoring in back-to-back seasons since Sara Bailey paced
the Braves in scoring in 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2002-03. In addition, she could be the first player to lead Bradley
in both scoring and steals in consecutive seasons since
Shelli Braud in 1986-87 and 1987-88. welcome to the prairie state
Bradley’s nine newcomers come to Peoria from five
states and one foreign country (Germany). The 2014-15
roster has individuals representing seven different
states or countries. Bradley has not had seven states or
countries represented on a roster since 1998-99 when
the Braves had five states and two foreign countries. Freshman Anneke Schleter (Ulm, Germany) is the first foreign born Bradley player since Hanna Muegge wrapped
up her four-year career on The Hilltop in 2011-12. Freshman Danielle Brewer (Coastesville, Ind.), who was home
schooled, is the first Brave from the Hoosier State since
Amanda Reash in 2000-01. Bradley has a player from
Minnesota for the 10th consecutive year, while freshman
Tamya Sims gives the Braves a player from Wisconsin
for the fifth straight season. A pair of freshmen from
Iowa (Shareece Burrell & Haley Van Cleave) give Bradley
at least one individual from the Hawkeye State for the
seventh consecutive year. Junior college transfer Sameia
Kendall (Kansas City, Kan.) is the first BU player from the
Sunflower State since Megan Klingler in 2007-08. 2014-15 Bradley Women’s Basketball Nice crowds
Bradley broke the school season average attendance
record, drawing 1,422 fans per home game in 2013-14 to
surpass the previous average attendance mark of 1,372
set in 2001-02. During the course of the year, the Braves
had three of the top six single-game attendance figures
in program history. The season-opening crowd against
Illinois featured a special 11 a.m. game and approximately 1,800 grade school students helped make up the
largest crowd for a women’s basketball game at Renaissance Coliseum. The 2,402 in attendance vs. the Illini
was the largest for a season opener in program history
and ranks as the sixth-largest crowd at Bradley. The
Braves followed it up with the team’s first regular-season
game at Carver Arena since 2004-05, playing the second
game of a doubleheader with the men’s basketball team
which drew 6,797 fans. The Carver Arena crowd is the
largest home attendance number in school history,
surpassing the previous mark of 3,128 fans for a game
against Illinois State on Jan. 6, 2002. when opportunity knocks
With nine newcomers on the roster, the new Braves
will have plenty of opportunities to show off their abilities in 2014-15. Bradley ranked third in the MVC in scoring at nearly 70 points per game, but the Braves return
a league-low 37.9 percent of their scoring from last year. One of three MVC teams to return less than 50 percent
of the team’s scoring from the previous year, Bradley
and Loyola are the only squads in the Valley to have less
than 50 percent of the squad’s scoring, rebounding and
assists from 2013-14. mvc breakdown by the percentages
