Jason Feigh Happy New Year! I am not losing my mind totally, yet, but HAPPY NEW YEAR! It is a New Year in the Church, the First Sunday of Advent tells us that it’s a new beginning of our Church Year and for us a new start spiritually. So many times we think that a new beginning is shelling off the past completely, and only looking towards the future. That is not the case. If we don’t let the past influence our present, then we are neglecting the gift of what was and will not be able to live out the gift of the present to make a better future. That is why we have beginnings and a new starts…..to realize that the past is with us….not in a negative way…but through the lessons learned, only to make us a better person, striving to see and live out the greater glory of God…in the present….for a better future. The meaning of the yearly celebration of Christmas is for this reason: remember the past…take lessons from it to live in the present….for a brighter future. This is the very meaning of Salvation by Jesus Christ, and the meaning of our belief as Christians! What hope we have in our life….a hope so great that we are given new opportunities to live it out! Today, November 30th, is the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle (except when it falls on a Sunday). Saint Andrew was one of the first to follow Jesus and left his trade as a fishermen. He was the one who introduced Simon Peter to Jesus…..yes the St. Peter who was our first Pope! The celebration of Advent and our whole liturgical year of the Church is based around the placement of this feast. Further, Advent begins on the Sunday closest to this feast day. This is important, not because of the rubric, but because of the person. Saint Andrew was one of the first to recognize the Hope that was before him in Jesus Christ. He is a model for us, make him a patron Saint on your Advent journey to Christmas. Many times we look at Advent as the countdown to Christmas. It is more than that. The very formation of these next four weeks are about more than December 25th but the coming of Christ at the end, which is the reason for our Hope in the present. The first two weeks are aimed at preparing us for the Coming of Christ when all is said and done, then the Church focuses her attention then on the immediate celebration of the Birth of Christ culminating on our yearly Feast of Christmas AND ITS SEASON! We spend these four weeks focusing on Hope and bringing Hope to others…the hope we bring is Jesus Christ! That is why we spend time focusing on giving of ourselves this time of year, praying more, setting a spiritual resolution to spend more time with Jesus in prayer and most of all being thankful for the gift of the present moment with our families, friends, church, and world. But it cannot end here in this Season, but carry us onward in the days beyond Advent and Christmas. I love Christmas more than most, ask Father Detisch, and the office staff who have had to put up with Christmas Music and Trees since early November or look around Cathedral Prep which is beginning to look A LOT like Christmas….but all this comes down to remembering CHRIST who is HOPE and the reason for this “Holyday” Season, and the reason why each day is a new day. Take time to encounter the Lord anew in this time. Don’t focus solely on the Christmas countdown, but focus our lives with the Lord and each other. Make a New Year’s resolution that will stick. As we do begin anew I also want to encourage us all to start making plans spiritually on how we will make this Advent and Christmas Seasons different. It starts with the Sacraments. Take advantage of them….maybe we have fallen away….come back! Go to Mass one other time than just on Sundays. Go to Confession. There will be many opportunities to do so in addition to our regularly scheduled time on Saturday 3:30-4pm. Take time to pray daily. Start thinking about what Mass you want to attend on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas day. (Our Masses are Christmas Eve: 4:30pm/7pm/Midnight and Christmas Day: 9am/10:30am. Ever since I was a child, more than the Steelers, the outdoors, and even any other past time, Christmas is the most favorite time. Take time to enjoy and don’t get caught in the details. I know for some of us this is a tough time, let us be there for each other, and pray for each other. That is the encouragement of Advent….focus on HOPE! Finally, none of this time of year means anything if we don’t take it beyond this season or Christmas Day. We must live it out every day. Happy Advent, friends! Fr. Write a note to someone who is hurting this time of year. Make time to be with your family and friends. Say I’m sorry to those who you have hurt. Say I love you to those that matter. Give something away to someone who needs it. Go to Confession! (Make a new beginning) Go to Mass! (Maybe you have been away for a while…it’s a new start! Live in the Present….for each day is a gift! Don’t let the good you are doing this time of year end on Christmas Day.
