NOVEMBER
Hi, and welcome to November. I am not sure where the
year has gone, but I know it has been both challenging
and rewarding. I hope all is good at your place.
The 2014 year has been very busy in all areas, but I make
mention of the preparation for our recent periodic review
carried out by surveyors appointed by ACHS. After many
late nights and many meetings reviewing policies and
procedures, I am very pleased to advise that the survey
went very well with the surveyors congratulating us on
the comprehensive policies, procedures and systems that
we have in place. They had no hesitation in granting us
our accreditation for a further two years when we will
have to go through the process again, but on a larger scale. I thank Alicia
for her dedication, professionalism and the many long hours she put in to
ensure that we achieved our accreditation. Also, I thank the entire team at
the Hospice for their support and commitment with the process.
The Toowoomba Hospice has been selected as a finalist in the 2014
Queensland Regional Achievement and Community Awards to be
announced in Caloundra on November 8th. Marlene and I are very honoured
and proud to represent the Toowoomba Hospice at the Gala Function and
hopefully take out the award.
At this time of year our fundraising and social events start to wind down,
but the business side of the Hospice is ever-increasing, ensuring that the
overall outcomes are very positive for the future operations of our facility.
One of the ten most
beautiful trees in the
world!

I invite everyone to our Christmas Carols evening in the grounds of the
Hospice on Sunday 30th November at 5:00pm where we begin our Festive
Season celebrations. The Toowoomba Municipal Band and members from
High Altitude Harmony will join with us in the singing of all the popular
Christmas Carols. Please bring your family and friends along and enjoy this
lovely evening.
Graham Barron welcomes Venerable
Master Chin Kung to the Hospice . The
Master has visited several times and
was the instigator of the donations given
to the Hospice by the Pure Land
Learning College each year.
Master Chin Kung is acknowledged
worldwide for his achievements in
spreading the philosophy of Buddhism
and has received many awards for that
work. His support of the Hospice is
greatly valued!

We are blessed to have great friendships with many community organisations who
continually choose the Toowoomba Hospice as a beneficiary of their events. Last
month saw Jaryu and the team from ‘Toowoomba Youth Charity Concert’ raise a
whopping $2,274.40 from their concert. High Altitude Harmony (HAH) whilst raising
money for themselves gave us the proceeds from their multi draw raffle ($500) and the
Municipal Band Concert in September raised just under $6,000 of which half came to
the Hospice.

We had a great day at the annual Toowoomba Stamp Club “Stamp Day” on October
11 selling approximately $100 in postage memorabilia. We still have 2 sales to go
before our presentation of the year’s results at the annual Hospice Christmas party.
We will exceed last year’s $600, but by how much?

I’m hoping that by the time this newsletter is published, we have good news about our
Periodic Review Survey held on Friday 24th October 2014. Many months of preparation
have preceded this survey as we have worked very hard to meet the national standards
for safety and quality in healthcare. There will only be a small breather as we drop the
gears back for a few weeks, However, the wheels will keep turning as we move towards
achieving our next accreditation in October 2016.
We are halfway through our 4 year cycle at the moment, the surveyors having checked on
standards 1, 2 and 3 and mandatory items from standards 11 to 15. In two years we will
have to meet all the standards – 1 to 10 of the national standards and 11 to 15 of the
Australian Council on Healthcare Standards.!
The Hospice team in general has risen to the challenge and worked very hard over recent
months. The Management Committee, the Registered Nurses and Personal Care
Assistants, the Administration Team, the Pastoral Care Team and the Volunteers, all in
their own way have contributed towards providing a safe and quality palliative care service
– thank you all for your efforts! Jodie and Eugenie in administration worked especially
hard – Eugenie adjusting to a new position within the organisation, and bringing with her a
great ability to write and review policies, and Jodie who did millions of key strokes on her
keyboard – well done to you both! And then Graham, our Chairman, an integral part of the
organisation, manages superbly to balance his regular job and the demands of his
Hospice position.
I have worked a number of Saturdays over the past couple of months, and had the most
random act of kindness in a volunteer calling in to my office, where I was hiding before
leaving one day, to ask if I wanted anything – a cup of tea and 3 pieces of chocolate (I
really needed that, didn’t I!). I was left with a feeling that we have a top group of volunteers
here and I am very proud to be a part of this team.
Thankyou to that person! It makes just the tiniest bit of difference – you know who you are!
I’m heading off to New Zealand for a week to attend the Hospice New
Zealand Conference 2014 at Te Papa Museum in Wellington. One of
our Registered Nurses Jocelyn, is also going. I’m sure we will find it
very educational and informative. I am also hoping to get a chance to
visit a Hospice close to Wellington.
Until next month, take care and as always, thank you for your support and ongoing efforts.

I would firstly like to say a
huge
Sharene Gosley
thankyou to everyone who was a part of the
th
preparation for our accreditation on 24 of October. Everyone’s efforts were greatly
appreciated and contributed to the Hospice looking amazing.
We welcomed a new housekeeper to the team a few weeks ago. Please make Barbara
welcome if you see her around. Sadly, we say goodbye to Diana Holley this week. Diana
has been a member of the Hospice family for the past 5 years helping with housekeeping.
We wish her all the very best.
Help is still needed selling glow stick products at the Wonderland of Lights. If you are able to help out, please call or
email me for details.
We are also in need of people to help make craft items, pickles, chutneys, jams, and baked goodies, or anything
else we can sell at our craft stall at the Carols night on Sunday 30th November. If you can help out by making items
or if you would like to help man the craft stall on the night, please let me know as soon as possible.
Reminder… Volunteer refresher training is on November Monday 17 th at 5pm and Tuesday 18th November at
9.30am. If you have not already done your Fire Safety, safe manual handling and hand washing paperwork for the
year, this is for you. Come along and get all your paperwork done in one easy group session.
And finally, please mark in your calendars….Saturday 13th December…is our Hospice Staff & Volunteers
Christmas Party at Toowoomba City Bowls Club .
