First Sunday of Advent
HOPE REVEALED
Did you ever see a child’s face when something they have wished for is
under the Christmas tree? Did you ever reach a goal you set out to
accomplish and watch it come to life? There are many days when we all
need hope. Without hope, life’s circumstances can crush our spirits and
end up leaving us feeling awful or worse, just being bitter about
everything. During Advent and Christmas, we rejoice, not that our lives
are perfect, but that hope is with us in Jesus.
We Celebrate Hope Revealed.

Advent Begins – Candlelight Sing
I hope you are enjoying this Thanksgiving weekend and
the company of family and friends. As quick as
Thanksgiving has come and gone, Advent appears right
away. A new Church year gives us all an opportunity to
encounter Christ again and to be filled with the Spirit of
Love. There are many ways to mark this Holy Season of
Advent. Throughout these weeks, we will be talking
about hope during each of the Sundays. The Little Blue
books are available so you can meditate on God’s word
each day. Some might consider attending daily Mass
during this time as a way to just rest in the presence of
God during this hectic season. Yes, Advent can be so
beautiful, but we all admit at some time or another that
all the activity in the next month will wear us down.
That’s why, in this first week of Advent, you might just
consider an hour of hearing some music of the season as
sung by our choir this coming Thursday night, December
4th at 7:30 pm in the church. Come and join us and
experience some peace, some musical inspiration and
have some fun as we join together to sing some
Christmas Carols together. The glow of the candlelight
will bring your heart to rest on the most important part of
the season.
Solemnity of the Immaculate Virgin Mary –
Monday, December 8th
The Blessed Virgin Mary provides us all with a living
example of hope as she said yes to the plan of God for
her life despite all the unanswered questions and doubts
she might have had. She inspires us to hope especially in
times of trial and difficulty. She inspires us to hope when
everything appears on the outside to be a complete mess.
In all circumstances, Mary remained faithful whether
filled with joy as she bore the source of our hope or in her
pain and suffering as she accepted the burden of being a
disciple. Make this day a significant day for yourself and
your family this year as we celebrate the Eucharist
together. Masses will be celebrated at 7:30 am, 9 am,
3:45 pm and 7:30 pm.
Media Ministry
We are still looking for people, high school age and
older, who are willing to help us operate our media for
the weekend Masses. If you are interested in assisting,
please let me know. It is the goal to have our media
screens operating at every Mass.
In God’s Peace and Love,
Fr. Michael

Christmas Outreach to the Poor
Baskets containing paper ornaments with suggested
gifts for the poor will be at the entrances of the Church
next weekend. Gifts may be dropped off at the Church
or Parish Center at any time but not later than Dec.
15. Please do not wrap these gifts, but tape the paper
ornament to them. If you have already purchased
items, there is no need to find an ornament to match
them; we can take care of that. Please do not purchase
gifts promoting violence (war toys or guns) or Bratz or
Barbie dolls. Thank you for your generosity and your
concern for those in need.
If you can’t feed a hundred people, feed just one.

on the Advent and Christmas Seasons

Advent Presentation: the “Infancy Narratives”
Women’s Morning Out With God
The opening chapters of Matthew and Luke are the only
gospels which describe the wondrous events and people
surrounding the birth of the Messiah. This three-session bible
study will explore many significant theological and spiritual
connections these “Infancy Narratives” make between the
Old Testament and the birth of the Savior. Bro. Bill will
offer this course on Tuesday mornings: December 2, 9, 16 at
9:45 am in the parish center. Since materials have to be
ordered, please register as soon as possible. Forms available
at the Parish Center or call the Center and leave your name
and phone number. ($20 fee for materials)
Give yourself a gift during the Advent Season. Spend time
preparing for the readings of each Advent Sunday with a
group of women who, like you, are "too busy to take the time
right now!!!" but know they need time for God in this stressfilled season. Come and join us to listen to how the readings
for the coming Sunday are speaking just to you - YES! It's
supposed to be personal. Listen to each other and be
touched each Wednesday morning of Advent, December 3,
10 and 17 after the 9:00 Mass in Meaney Hall.

Cornerstone
Advent is given to us as a time to prepare our souls for the
coming of the Lord. Presently, Cornerstone Team 26 is also
getting ready to share the message of God’s love on the
Women’s Renewal Weekend: Feb 27-28, 2015. The 4
candles of our Advent wreath together symbolize the 4,000
years humanity waited for the Savior. "The Light of the
World." John 8:12. If you haven’t yet attended a
Cornerstone Retreat, why wait any longer? (If you’d like to
attend again, we’d love to have you back!) 26 hours to rest,
relax and reflect in the spirit of Christ with ordinary women,
just like you. Looking forward to you joining us.
“Thanks-giving” A Distinctive Meaning
Catholic Charities is deeply thankful for your positive
response to the donation bin. As we all know, one way to
give “thanks” is by “giving”. Just as the Lord has given so
many blessings, this is an ideal time to give away any
unwanted clothing or small household items to the Catholic
Charities donation bin. Catholic Charities will report in
January on the amount of money generated from the bin.
Happy “Thanks-giving”!
How To Report Abuse
The Archdiocese takes very seriously all allegations of
sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, Religious and
lay staff. Individuals who wish to report an allegation of
sexual misconduct may do so by calling the Archdiocesan
Office of Child and Youth Protection at 201-407-3256.

STRATEGY
St. Helen’s Church has the most registered families in its history,
yet currently, we report a pattern of lower Mass attendance.
• Our strategy is to make Church matter to our parishioners.
• Central to our plan is to make Sunday Eucharist the source and
summit of our faith community as envisioned by the Second Vatican
Council.
• We commit ourselves to providing a weekend message that is
relevant and well-prepared.
• We commit ourselves to music that inspires the hearts of those
who join us while encouraging active participation among all.
• We commit ourselves to the children of our parish by inviting them
to age appropriate experiences of faith formation.
• We commit ourselves to reaching out to inactive parishioners,
encouraging those who attend Mass to engage in ministry and
spiritual growth, and challenging dedicated disciples to invite
newcomers to our community.
VALUES
• As a Roman Catholic faith community, we are shaped by both
God’s Word and our Sacred Traditions as handed on to the
successors of the Apostles.
• The Eucharist and the Sacraments are central to our faith. We
value ongoing conversion to Jesus Christ.
Daily prayer, scripture readings, small group participation and
ministry are the desired goal of all our members. We aim to make
disciples.
• We believe that service to others flows from our call to
discipleship. We believe in serving those in our parish community,
in our surrounding area, as well as those in special need in our
country and in the world.
• We believe in a missionary spirit.
• We have a special place for those that are searching for a
Catholic faith community where they will find a warm welcome,
personal pastoral care, and faith development opportunities that are
of high quality. We love seekers.

Christmas Memorials
Christmas will soon be upon us and we are again offering you an opportunity to remember your loved ones during our joyous
celebration of the birth of our Lord. We will place their names on our traditional memorial scroll, which may be viewed in the
vestibule of the church during the Christmas season. The contributions will be used for our decorations in the church and
Parish Center ~ flowers, trees, wreaths, etc.
Our deepest thanks for your support and generosity. May the presence of the Lord fill your minds and hearts and may his
blessings be with you and your family during this holy season.
