Readings at Mass: 1 Sunday of Advent Year B.
First Reading: (Isaiah 63: 16-17; 64: 1, 3-8.)
The Prophet speaks on behalf of the people. It is as if God is hiding from his people because of their sins. If only God
would return to earth and all would be right again.
Psalm: 121: Response: I rejoiced when I heard them say, let us go to God’s house.
Second Reading: (1 Corinthians 1: 3-9.)
St. Paul begins his letter to the Corinthians hinting at the themes he will develop later: keeping focused on Jesus’ return, be
thankful for God given gifts, which are to be used in serving one another and building up their unity in Jesus Christ,
avoiding anything contrary to this.
Gospel Reading: (Mark 13: 33-37.)
We are urged to be ready at a moments notice for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. How? Stay awake, by being faithful
each day to our God given tasks, using the gifts and talents received from the Holy Spirit.
Readings at Mass: 2
nd
Sunday of Advent, Year B.
First Reading: (Isaiah 40: 1-5, 9-14.)
The time of exile in Babylon is over for Israel. Their sin is now forgiven and the Prophet speaks words of consolation and of
hope from God. They will return to Jerusalem and must prepare for God’s powerful return as a loving shepherd.
Psalm: 84: Response: Let us see, O Lord, your mercy and give us your saving help.
Second Reading: (2 Peter 3: 8-14.)
St. Peter writes about the seeming slowness of Jesus’ Second Coming at the end of time as a sign of God’s patience. He is
giving us time to change so that we become holy and saintly and at peace.
Gospel Reading: (Mark 1: 1-8.)
The prophecy in the first reading is fulfilled by John the Baptist who prepares the way for Jesus’ ministry by offering the
forgiveness of sins. Jesus offers more: the Holy Spirit.
The Advent Parish Retreat Day: THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL – get the most out of Christmas.
Saturday 6th December 2014, in St. Joseph’s, Shirebrook.
Starting with 10am Mass, shared table lunch, finishing at 4.30pm.
A fun day of faith to help you practically in everyday life. Ideal for all ages and whatever your faith journey.
With David Payne – a Catholic film producer and author, and Director of the Café Ministry.
Plus Steve Murray – international mime artist and Conference speaker.
Based in St. Joseph’s Church, Shirebrook.
As well as running the Retreat in the parish, David & Steve will speak and perform
at the parish Masses that weekend, so that the whole parish will benefit from their ministry.
Congratulations: We have some more Eucharistic Ministers in the parish who were commissioned at the Cathedral a few

through this Ministry.

STAY AWAKE.
First Sunday of Advent
Year B.
[Mark 13: 33-37.]
Jesus says:
“Stay awake because you do not
know when the master is coming.”
[Mark 13:35.]
PREPARE A WAY
FOR THE LORD.
Second Sunday of Advent
Year B.
[Mark 1: 1-8.]
Jesus says:
“He will baptise you with the Holy
Spirit.”
[Mark 1: 8]
How to put “Faith First” every day.
[based on the pastoral practice of Fr. Pat J. Brennan.]
Read the Sunday Gospel, and then Share with someone what
strikes you about the Reading, Pray about your Sharing & the
Prayer of the Week, and Do it - put it all into practice.
A suggested Format: 1. Prayer to the Holy Spirit. 2. Proclamation
of Sunday’s Gospel. 3. Discussion of several faith-sharing
questions: e.g. What words or images strike you? What message
do you hear for self and community? What would be the price of
living the message? What would be the benefit? 4. Petitions in the
light of discussion. 5. Closing Prayer [e.g. Prayer of the Week, or
Our Father ….]
Prayer of the Week:
God our Father, as we wait for your Son Jesus to return in
his glory, the evil & sin in the world can prevent us from
seeing you. This Advent, teach us to look out for your
loving presence every day. Amen
Prayer of the Week:
Father in heaven, thank you for the gift of Baptism. This
week, help us to prepare for the coming of Jesus your
Son by renewing our baptism commitment, confessing
our sins, and opening ourselves up to a new experience
of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
