AL PETTEWAY & AMY WHITE IN CONCERT Grammy-Winning Guitarist and Indie-Award Winning Duo Al Petteway and Amy White will appear in concert at the Ashe Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, February 7. Seating is limited. Al and Amy offer an intoxicating blend of musical styles. Their repertoire includes original, traditional, contemporary Celtic and Appalachian-influenced music with occasional nods to rock and jazz. Their performances feature acoustic guitar, mandolin, Celtic harp, piano, banjo, lap dulcimer, world percussion, and a touch of vocals. Al and Amy’s music was featured throughout the soundtrack of Ken Burns EMMY-winning documentary, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. ASHE COUNTY CHORAL FESTIVAL The eighth Ashe County Choral Festival will be held Thursday, December 4 at 7:00 at the Ashe Civic Center. The Festival will showcase the high quality choral programs available in Ashe County schools and will feature an evening of individual choruses and massed choir selections all with a holiday theme. Participating choruses and their directors include Blue Ridge Elementary (Rachel Nave-Lewis), Mountain View Elementary (Pat Lanno), Westwood Elementary (Mary Greene), Ashe County Middle School (Paula Carlton), and Ashe County High School (Andrea Gardner.) Each school chorus will perform a selection. There will be an elementary mass selection, Winter Fantasy, middle school and high school mass selection, Let It Go, and the final all school mass selection will be Christmas in Three Minutes. Other selections will include Siyahamba and Grown-Up Christmas List. Funding for the Choral Festival is made possible with a Grassroots Arts Program Grant from the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and is sponsored locally by the Ashe County Arts Council. Many of the artist craftsmen have been honing their craft for 30+ years, have won awards nationally and have been pushing the boundaries in their respective mediums. REGIONAL ARTIST PROJECT GRANT AWARDS Regional Artist Project Grant Awards for 2014-2015 were announced recently. Eight grants were given to artists in Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga, and Wilkes counties. This project was supported by the N.C. Tree Fest November 24 through December 31, 2014 • The ReTree The ReTree was inspired by the concept of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to bring awareness to over consumption in our culture and to spark creativity and enthusiasm in finding neat ways to utilize previously used materials. Members of Ashe Schools of Home Education have created ornaments out of materials that were once something else. The tree includes the whole rainbow spectrum! The ornaments are for sale and make great presents! • The Sweet Treat of Christmas Holly Roten has crafted the Sweet Treat of Christmas Tree using pink, silver and white mesh. The inspiration for the tree comes from a Southern Christmas Show Tree Decorating Contest. No sweet treat would be complete without a cherry on top! • Stars and Stripes Forever Stars and Stripes Forever is a military tribute tree decorated by Robin King. It celebrates the U.S. armed service branches with a large flag banner, stars and framed insignias of the five military branches, and lotsof red, white and blue. • The Dancer’s Tree April’s School of Dance presents The Dancer’s Tree! It represents the children that dance with April! The ornaments are either handmade or special to the child in some way. Dancing is an art and a way of expressing oneself, and the pink ribbons that wind through the tree remind everyone to “dance as though no one is watching!” • Feliz Navidad from Mexico The Feliz Navidad Tree pays homage to the people of Mexico with a tree representing their homeland. Handcrafted decorations include hand-painted tin ornaments and wooden, fabric, and paper ornaments. Symbols of Mexican culture, maracas, mariachi hats, and poinsettias, along with the colors of the Mexican flag as the garland, complete the tree decorated by Barbara Sears. As in all countries in which Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion, the crèche or nativity is used prominently in Christmas decorating. • Top Dog Ed and Ellie Perzel honor the role dogs play in our lives with a fun tree celebrating working dogs, military dogs, and man’s best friend, our pet! These four legged creatures that we live with, play with, share our food and beds with, are celebrated in a tree of red and gold. Decorations include dog chains, tennis ball ornaments, dog collars, dog biscuits, and dog houses. Icicles add a shimmer to the tree! This winter wonderland has been created with something for everyone and represents community involvement with the arts. Tree Fest November 24 through December 31, 2014 • The ReTree The ReTree was inspired by the concept of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to bring awareness to over consumption in our culture and to spark creativity and enthusiasm in finding neat ways to utilize previously used materials. Members of Ashe Schools of Home Education have created ornaments out of materials that were once something else. The tree includes the whole rainbow spectrum! My Favorite Things The Ashe County Arts Council’s tree with handcrafted holiday decorations from local artists Linda Bruce, Beverly Clayton, Julie Greene, Ronnie Hughes, Betsy Isaacs, Paulette Lawrence, Jane Maddocks, Theresa McGrath, Judy Mitchell, Pat Morrison, Cathey Purvey, Cheryl Roberts, Cher Shaffer, Ellen Sinford, Cheryl Williams, and others. The original ornaments by these artists include works in wood, clay, metal, glass, paper and fabric. The ornaments are for sale and make great presents! • The Sweet Treat of Christmas Holly Roten has crafted the Sweet Treat of Christmas Tree using pink, silver and white mesh. The inspiration for the tree comes from a Southern Christmas Show Tree Decorating Contest. No sweet treat would be complete without a cherry on top! • Stars and Stripes Forever Stars and Stripes Forever is a military tribute tree decorated by Robin King. It celebrates the U.S. armed service branches with a large flag banner, stars and framed insignias of the five military branches, and lotsof red, white and blue. • The Dancer’s Tree April’s School of Dance presents The Dancer’s Tree! It represents the children that dance with April! The ornaments are either handmade or special to the child in some way. Dancing is an art and a way of expressing oneself, and the pink ribbons that wind through the tree remind everyone to “dance as though no one is watching!” • Feliz Navidad from Mexico The Feliz Navidad Tree pays homage to the people of Mexico with a tree representing their homeland. Handcrafted decorations include hand-painted tin ornaments and wooden, fabric, and paper ornaments. Symbols of Mexican culture, maracas, mariachi hats, and poinsettias, along with the colors of the Mexican flag as the garland, complete the tree decorated by Barbara Sears. As in all countries in which Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion, the crèche or nativity is used prominently in Christmas decorating. • Top Dog Ed and Ellie Perzel honor the role dogs play in our lives with a fun tree celebrating working dogs, military dogs, and man’s best friend, our pet! These four legged creatures that we live with, play with, share our food and beds with, are celebrated in a tree of red and gold. Decorations include dog chains, tennis ball ornaments, dog collars, dog biscuits, and dog houses. Icicles add a shimmer to the tree! The Ashe County Arts Council will sponsor a community celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King at 7 p.m. on Monday, January 19th at the Ashe Arts Center in West Jefferson. Included in the evening’s activities will be readings and tributes from local leaders with special music presented under the direction of Diane Bryan-Leeper. Donna Washington will be the featured performer for the celebration. Ms. Washington is a storyteller, performer, and author. She will also present programs for students at Ashe County Middle School, Ashe County High School, and the elementary schools on January 20th and 21st. ASHE COUNTY CHORAL FESTIVAL The eighth Ashe County Choral Festival will be held Thursday, December 4 at 7:00 at the Ashe Civic Center. The Festival will showcase the high quality choral programs available in Ashe County schools and will feature an evening of individual choruses and massed choir selections all with a holiday theme. Participating choruses and their directors include Blue Ridge Elementary (Rachel Nave-Lewis), Mountain View Elementary (Pat Lanno), Westwood Elementary (Mary Greene), Ashe County Middle School (Paula Carlton), and Ashe County High School (Andrea Gardner.) Each school chorus will perform a selection. There will be an elementary mass selection, Winter Fantasy, middle school and high school mass selection, Let It Go, and the final all school mass selection will be Christmas in Three Minutes. Other selections will include Siyahamba and Grown-Up Christmas List. Funding for the Choral Festival is made possible with a Grassroots Arts Program Grant from the N.C. REGIONAL ARTIST PROJECT GRANT AWARDS Regional Artist Project Grant Awards for 2014-2015 were announced recently. Eight grants were given to artists in Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga, and Wilkes counties. This project was supported by the N.C. Held at the Arts Center, Henry Doss and Scot Pope warm-up the audience with their musical story telling at 3:00 p.m. Readings begin at 4:00 p.m. Refreshments are provided. Wordkeepers is free and open to the public. Writers interested in reading from their work should email Chris Arvidson at [email protected] to secure their first-come, first-served spot on the bill, and to receive guidelines for reading. The final Wordkeeper session for this year will be held on Saturday, December 20, and the following dates have been set for 2015: February 21, April 18, June 20, August 15, October 17, and December 19. AL PETTEWAY & AMY WHITE IN CONCERT Grammy-Winning Guitarist and Indie-Award Winning Duo Al Petteway and Amy White will appear in concert at the Ashe Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, February 7. Seating is limited. Al and Amy offer an intoxicating blend of musical styles. Their repertoire includes original, traditional, contemporary Celtic and Appalachian-influenced music with occasional nods to rock and jazz. Their performances feature acoustic guitar, mandolin, Celtic harp, piano, banjo, lap dulcimer, world percussion, and a touch of vocals. Al and Amy’s music was featured throughout the soundtrack of Ken Burns EMMY-winning documentary, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. And in 2010 their album, Caledon Wood (which includes the main theme of the national Parks documentary), was counted among the essential albums of the past 20 years in the Acoustic Guitar Magazine 20th anniversary issue.
