SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
1.
RULES
The race will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing 2013-2016 of the ISAF, the prescriptions
of the AYF and the Sailing Instructions issued by the Queenscliff Lonsdale Yacht Club Inc.
(“QLYC”).
Yachts will comply with Addendum "A", AYF Special Regulations Section, Part 1, Section 2,
(pp203,204), Category 5 (keel boats and trailables), Category 7 (Couta Boats) and the appropriate
class rules or as modified by these Sailing Instructions.
All competing vessels must carry a functioning VHF radio.
2. ENTRIES
a. Eligible yachts may be entered by completing an entry form, and lodging it with the QLYC within
the time limit.
b. Yachts shall comply with their respective class rules and shall be disqualified for non-compliance
upon protest unless alterations were declared on the entry form.
c. QLYC reserves the right to reject any entry.
d. All those taking part in QLYC races, do so at their own risk and responsibility. The QLYC is not
responsible for the seaworthiness of a yacht whose entry is accepted or the sufficiency or adequacy
of its equipment. Attention is drawn to RRS Fundamental Rule Part 1.02.3, that states: “The
responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race or to continue racing is hers alone.” By
participating in a race conducted under these rules, each competitor and yacht owner agrees:
(i) To be governed by the rules.
(ii) To accept the penalties imposed and other action taken in accordance with rules, subject to the
appeal and review procedures provided in them, as the final determination.
(iii) Not to resort to any court or tribunal not provided by the rules.
3. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS & CHANGES IN SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
Notices to competitors and any changes to sailing instructions shall be posted on the official Notice
Board by 09:30 hrs. Sat. 06/12/2014 at Race Headquarters located in front of the Harbour office.
4. SIGN ON AND BRIEFING
Skippers shall sign on at Race HQ from 09:30 hrs. Following sign on, a briefing will be held at 10.30
to relay any changes to the sailing instructions or course. All skippers and crew are expected to attend
this briefing.
Couta boats will be deemed to have signed on by entering the Start Area and contacting the Officer
of the Day on VHF 72 or mobile 0417 772 220.
5. SIGNALS MADE ASHORE
Signals made ashore shall be displayed at Race Headquarters.

7.
SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR COUTA BOATS
To sign on sail past the start boat “SWAN” and hail your sail number or telephone the officer on
the day, 0417 772 220 ( leave a message on the message service if engaged ) or radio the Committee
boat, “SWAN” on VHF 72.
QLYC should have a list of all entries for this race as entry fees were due on Friday 28 Nov 2014.
Arrangements with SSCBC: SSCBC will have supplied a list of their entries to QLYC before
Sat 6th December Please Note: Entries will not be received on the day due to administrative issues.
Alternate Sign off for couta boats will constitute sailing through the finish line. (ie no need to contact
race HQ ) – Confirmation may be required from the OOD post the race finish.
If a boat retires (does not sail through the finish line) it must telephone 0417 772 220 or report to
“SWAN” on VHF 72 to signal retirement.
8. THE START
The race will be started in accordance with the RRS (p 37) Part 3 – Conduct of a Race, 26, (the 5
minute system) with divisions starting at 10-minute intervals between actual start times, in ascending
numerical order. For the purpose of this instruction replace the word “class” with “division”.
a. The start line will be between a yellow buoy approximately 3 cables ENE of the Queenscliff
entrance (see course diagram), and a staff flying the QLYC burgee (blue triangle with white swan)
on the Committee boat “Swan” anchored at the starboard end of the line.
b. A safety or “barging” buoy may be laid a short distance from the starting vessel, but not
necessarily exactly on the line. No yacht shall pass between this buoy and the starting vessel at any
time.
Yachts whose divisional warning signal has not been made shall keep clear of the starting area and
of all yachts whose warning signal and start sequence has commenced.
9.
RECALL
a. Individual recalls will be signalled in accordance with RRS 29.1.
b. General recalls will be signalled in accordance with RRS rule 29.2.
10. THE COURSE. (refer also to the course diagram and section 13. Hazards)
Start in an Easterly direction. Round West Channel Pile No.3 to port, and then proceed up Symonds
Channel (approx. 060T.) Round a yellow buoy approx. 100 metres SW of the Symonds Channel
pile at the North East end of Symonds Channel to starboard. Proceed to a laid yellow buoy (approx.
175T) at the North East end of the Pinnace Channel. (3816.80'S 14448.80'E) Leave this buoy to
starboard. Follow a course approximately 240T down the Pinnace Channel to round South Channel

No.6 (a black pile with a port hand channel top mark) to starboard. Continue down the South
Channel and round Pile No.4 to starboard.
Proceed to the Wedge Light (approx. 320T).). Round Red/Pink Buoy (laid approx 100 meters) to
the North of the Wedge Light (structure and pile), leave this buoy to port. Proceed to the start line
North of the Queenscliff Creek.
11. THE FINISH.
The finish line will be laid at the Start line North of Queenscliff Creek. The finish line will be
between a laid red/orange buoy at the port end, and the staff flying the QLYC burgee on the
Committee boat “Swan” at the starboard end.
Yachts are requested not to re-cross the finish line following their finish.
12. RETIRING AND SIGNING OFF
Yachts and Couta Boats retiring MUST notify a race official prior to leaving the racecourse. Advice
can be radioed to the race control vessels or other official Boats on course on VHF channel 72
(alternatively phone Race HQ on 0417 772 220)
Skippers shall sign off at Race Headquarters within one hour of the last boat finishing. Signing off in
the appropriate manner shall be a declaration of observance of the racing rules and these instructions.
If a boat retires (does not sail through the finish line) it must telephone OOD on 0417 772 220 or
report to “SWAN” on VHF 72 to signal retirement.
13. HAZARDS
a. Hazards in the form of sandbars, reefs, etc. occur over the course with extensive sandbars and tidal
flats in the vicinity of Swan Island, Symonds Channel and around Mud Islands. Refer to AUS158
for detail. Shoaling in some areas may mean the location and depth of sandbars may not be as
exactly indicated on the chart.
b. The course is in an area, which experiences strong tidal currents. This can be a particular hazard
in the vicinity of fixed structures and piles.
c. Drapers Reef lays approximately 100m inshore of Drapers Pile.
d. Skippers are warned that the course passes across and along shipping channels and should keep a
watch for vessels at all times.
e. The Sorrento-Queenscliff car ferry's approach Queenscliff at approximately 10:40; 11:40; 12:40
etc. and is scheduled to depart on the hour at 11:00; 12:00; 13:00 etc.
f. A smaller blue passenger ferry may also operate at this time of year
g. A number of Dive Charter boats operate in the area with snorkel groups common around the
Caisson and the Annulus (the rocks SW of the Wedge.)

14. TIME LIMIT
All competitors shall cease racing at 1700 hours. Yachts that have not crossed the finish line by this
time will be regarded as “Did Not Finish”.
15. SHORTENED COURSE
Will be signalled in accordance with RRS rule 32 (pp39) and Race Signals at a mark of the course.
Please note if the course is shortened at either of the South Channel Pile marks (4 or 6), that the
Committee Boat “Swan” will be lying to the North of the pile (out of the channel). The Finish will
be between the pile and the Committee Boat. The Committee Boat is to be left to starboard.
16. PROTESTS
Will be accepted in accordance with Part 5 of the RRS (pp49) .
a. Protests shall be written on forms available at Race Headquarters, after the race, and lodged there
within one hour after the finish time of the last yacht, together with a deposit of $20.00.
b. Protest notices will be posted at Race headquarters within 30 minutes of the protest time limit to
inform competitors that there is a hearing to which they are a party or named as witnesses. This
shall constitute official notice to all parties.
c. Protests shall be heard in approximately the order of receipt commencing as soon as possible after
the race.
17. SCORING
a. Current VYC Class Basic Handicaps for Trailables, Trailable performance Handicaps and
Performance Handicaps of the Couta Boat Club at race day shall apply.
b. Provisional results will be displayed at Race Headquarters as early as possible. Final results will
be mailed or emailed to all competitors as soon as practicable and available on the Club’s Website
www.qlyc.org.au.
18. ALTERNATIVE PENALTIES , COUTA BOATS
Couta Boats shall complete a 360 turn to include one tack and Gybe.
19. SHORTENING or ABANDONMENT
Will be signalled in accordance with RRS Part 3.32. In the case of adverse weather, the
Abandonment and Re-sail signal shall be flown at Race HQ and a notice posted on the Notice Board.
The Re-sail will be scheduled for Sunday 7th December at 12:00 hrs
20. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES
Presentation of trophies based on provisional results will be made at Race HQ, as soon as possible
after the race. Copies of official results will be mailed to all competitors.
A sausage sizzle and drinks (for a small fee) are available at the presentations .
21. TROPHIES

The Peninsular Sea Road Perpetual Trophy (Couta Boats_1st, 2nd and 3rd.)

SAFETY REGULATIONS
22.
a. Competing yachts may be inspected for compliance with the safety regulations.
b. Crew shall be at least one adult and one person over 14 years of age.
c. No trapeze allowed.
d. The appropriate Chart for this race is AUS 158 and should be carried.
e. Crews of yachts without lifelines shall wear buoyancy vests or life jackets.(excluding Couta Boats)
f. Couta Boats are exempted the need to carry heaving lines.
g. Weather reports will be available from Queenscliff Coast Guard VMR 369.
h. Skippers are reminded of ISAF Fundamental Rule 1, Rendering Assistance. Time so lost may be
claimed in writing using a protest format.
23. RADIO
The Queenscliff Lonsdale Yacht Club Inc. “Swan”, the Committee boat and other rescue craft will
maintain radio listening watch on channel 72 VHF.
24. LAUNCHING
There is an excellent launching ramp at the North end of Hesse St., the main street of Queenscliff. A
24 hour launch/park fee applies and those competitors who wish to park more than one day should
leave their boat trailer in the Queenscliff Lonsdale Yacht Club car park located on Swan Bay,
near the corner of Nankervis Pde and King St. (Melways map 236, E5). Sheltered moorings are
available in the two basins.
The Sorrento boat ramp is the closest launching facility on the Mornington Peninsula.
25. ACCOMMODATION
Crews may use the car park and facilities (inc showers, toilet, kitchen eating) of the QueenscliffLonsdale Yacht Club on Friday night if they wish to stay aboard their yachts. Plenty of parking at the
club for cars and trailers/boats. Please make prior arrangements with the Commodore.
