Let’s say you’re at home frantically finishing up a report for
school or work, and you’re
trusted printer refuses to print—
ever again. Don’t panic, you can
now print that report remotely at
the library from your laptop,
smart phone or any Internet
connected device. Access our
website at www.wmlnj.org and
click on the links for “remote
printing” and follow the instructions. You’ll receive a job number, and when you arrive at the
library and enter your email address at the Reference Desk
printer on the second floor, your
print job and its cost will appear
on the screen. Feed the
money—coins (no pennies) or
dollar bills—into the machine,
and your report appears. Black
and white copies are 10¢ apiece,
and color copies are 50¢.
If you are within the library using a laptop, smart phone or any
Internet connected device, you
can send print jobs to the Reference Desk printer as well.
“We are very happy to be offering this convenient new service
from PrinterOn,” said Library
Director Phil Israel. “Our patrons can now print virtually
any document or web page from
their Internet connected device
to our library printer.
“It’s important to understand
that they are not printing wirelessly,” he continued. “The system uses dedicated IP addresses.
The difference is that not only
can patrons print to the Reference Desk as they have always
done, but they can also send a
print job to the library from anywhere outside the library.”

We are not ourselves
The Mockingbird Next Door
by Matthew Thomas
Wednesday, February 25
at 7:00 pm
by Marja Mills
Wednesday, April 8 at 7:00 pm
What’s special about this book
is how Thomas takes us, slowly
and somewhat unexpectedly,
deep inside a family battling the
gray-toned middling place of their middle-class existence. At the core is Eileen Tumulty Leary, urging her
complacent husband and their impressionable son forward. Along the way, lives come and go. (“Fair
enough,” her mother said, and in a little while she was
dead.) There are some gorgeous scenes, some taut
lines (I liked the air-conditioning unit’s “indefatigable
wind”), and some heartbreakers (a mother tells her
son, at the funeral home, “That’s probably enough.”)
It’s thrilling to see an emerging writer test and flex his
voice. Then again, it’s oddly addictive to watch this
family unfold, age, and devolve. Intimate, honest, and
true, it’s the story of a doomed father and a flawed son
and the indefatigable and loving woman who keeps
them all together, even as they’re falling apart.

Editor Roz Giuditta
Harper Lee, author of the “national touchstone,” To
Kill a Mockingbird, withdrew from the relentless vortex of fame and never published another book. When
To Kill a Mockingbird was chosen for One Book, One
Chicago in 2001, Chicago Tribune reporter Mills traveled to Lee’s Alabama hometown, certain that she
would never get anywhere near the author. Instead,
Mills found herself living a literary fairy tale, as Alice,
Harper’s older sister by 15
years, still working as an
attorney in her nineties,
ushered Mills into their
book-filled home. Soon
Mills, much to her astonishment, is watching football
games, going fishing, and
sharing meals with Alice,
Nelle (Harper is her middle
name), and their friends.
When the Lees express
their hope that Mills will
record their reminiscences
and “set the record straight,” she rents the house next
door. As she portrays the exceptional Lee women and
their modest, slow-paced world with awed precision,
Mills creates a uniquely intimate, ruminative, and gently illuminating biographical memoir.

October Children’s Book
Sale Was a Great Success!
The recent Friends’ Fourth annual children’s and teens’ book sale was a huge
success, raising $2,275.60 for the library. Approximately 40 volunteers
worked hard but had much fun sorting,
organizing, and selling everything from
baby “board books” to teen novels. Parents once again exclaimed over the ease
of browsing and locating desired items.
Children were sometimes found lounging on the floor—or in their parents’
laps—enjoying a new book. All unsold
items were donated to worthy, charitable organizations.

and nanny. An outsider in both the family and Singapore itself, Teresa initially
struggles to manage Jiale's antics and find her footing in her new community.
The two eventually form a unique bond, but just as Teresa becomes an unspoken part of the family, unforeseen circumstances in an uncertain economy will
challenge the new normal yet again.
