Can you believe it’s that time of the year again? With Christmas approaching I am reminded of my mother and the very special place I hold in my heart for her. She was the first person I gave a Christmas gift to. I will never forget the moment we shared during that exchange. I was 4 years old and I re-gifted some perfume samples she kept under her bathroom sink. I was SURE she had no idea they were there. In typical motherly fashion, she swooned over the gift and expressed utter delight as she smelled each of the half full perfume samples. I beamed with pride on that Christmas morning because it filled my heart with joy to give something to my mother that would make her so happy. To this day I cannot recall what material gifts I received for Christmas that year but I do know I will always remember what it felt like to discover the joy of giving. I share this story not to impress the spirit of giving upon you or to remind you of your mother, but to encourage you to revisit the childlike excitement one feels when giving a gift that is small and meaningful. I wish you and your families nothing but joy and peace as we celebrate the close of this wonderful year. I am so glad that we at Heritage Place can celebrate this beautiful season together. Merry Christmas, Brady Ford Executive Director Heritage Place Assisted Living and Memory Care Community Exceptional Senior Living Brain Fitness Brain fitness for seniors has fast become an important part of lifelong well-being. Brain training that targets memory, attention and focus can lead to better recollection, faster reaction time and an overall sharper mind. A good tool to use to help sharpen your mind are Brain Teasers. A brain teaser is a form of puzzle that requires thought to solve. It often requires thinking in unconventional ways with given constraints in mind; sometimes it also involves lateral thinking. Logic puzzles and riddles are specific types of brain teasers. One of the earliest known brain teaser enthusiasts was the Greek mathematician Archimedes. He devised mathematical problems for his contemporaries to solve. One example of Archimedes mathematical problems was called, “Powers of Ten,” a way of counting that refers to the number of 0’s in a number which eliminated the use of the Greek alphabet in the counting system. (Scientific Notation) which is still used today. Brain teasers and information recollection are just a few exercises our residents practice during the Balancing Brains class held each Thursday morning. Vitamin-C is a proven antioxidant helps fight against harmful free radicals, boosts immunity and prevents infections and cancers. Cauliflower contains several anti-cancer phytochemicals like sulforaphane and plant sterols such as indole-3-carbinol, which appears to function as an antiestrogen agent. Together, these compounds have proven benefits against prostate, breast, cervical, colon, ovarian cancers by virtue of their cancer-cell growth inhibition, cytotoxic effects on cancer cells. Furthermore, Di-indolyl-methane (DIM), a lipid soluble compound present abundantly in Brassica group of vegetables, including cauliflower, has found to be effective as immune modulator, anti-bacterial and anti-viral agent. This compound brings out these functions by virtue of its ability to synthesize and potentiate InterferonGamma receptors at the cellular level. DIM has currently been found application in the treatment of recurring respiratory papillomatosis caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and is in Phase III clinical trials for cervical dysplasia. It contains good amounts of many vital B-complex groups of vitamins such as folates, pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B6) and thiamin (vitamin B1), niacin (B3) as well as vitamin K. These vitamins is essential in the sense that body requires them from external sources to replenish and required for fat, protein and carbohydrate metabolism.
