From the Desk of the Executive Director
Dear Residents and Friends,
Happy Holidays! Can you believe it’s that time of the year again?
With Christmas approaching I am reminded of my mother and the very
special place I hold in my heart for her. She was the first person I gave
a Christmas gift to. I will never forget the moment we shared during
that exchange. I was 4 years old and I re-gifted some perfume samples
she kept under her bathroom sink. I was SURE she had no idea they
were there. In typical motherly fashion, she swooned over the gift and
expressed utter delight as she smelled each of the half full perfume
samples. I beamed with pride on that Christmas morning because it
filled my heart with joy to give something to my mother that would make
her so happy. To this day I cannot recall what material gifts I received for
Christmas that year but I do know I will always remember what it felt like
to discover the joy of giving. I share this story not to impress the spirit
of giving upon you or to remind you of your mother, but to encourage
you to revisit the childlike excitement one feels when giving a gift that
is small and meaningful. I wish you and your families nothing but joy
and peace as we celebrate the close of this wonderful year. I am so glad
that we at Heritage Place can celebrate this beautiful season together.
Merry Christmas,

Brain Fitness
Brain fitness for seniors has fast become an important part of lifelong well-being. Brain training that targets
memory, attention and focus can lead to better recollection, faster reaction time and an
overall sharper mind. A good tool to use to help sharpen your
mind are Brain Teasers. A brain teaser is a form of puzzle
that requires thought to solve. It often requires thinking
in unconventional ways with given constraints in mind;
sometimes it also involves lateral thinking. Logic puzzles
and riddles are specific types of brain teasers. One of
the earliest known brain teaser enthusiasts was the Greek
mathematician Archimedes. He devised mathematical
problems for his contemporaries to solve. One example of
Archimedes mathematical problems was called, “Powers of
Ten,” a way of counting that refers to the number of 0’s in a
number which eliminated the use of the Greek alphabet in
the counting system. (Scientific Notation) which is still used
today. Brain teasers and information recollection are just
a few exercises our residents practice during the Balancing
Brains class held each Thursday morning.
Veteran’s Day Social
We were blessed with the opportunity to
honor our residents who are veterans during
our Social on Veteran’s Day. All branches
were honored as our guest speaker reflected
on the bravery of the men and woman who
served our Country.

Ingredient of the Month
Cauliflower
Please join us for our Ingredient of the Month Party as Chef Sean demonstrates his creative
Cauliflower recipe for us on Tuesday, December 16th at 2:00pm in the main dining room.
Delicious in casseroles, soups and medleys,
cauliflower is a staple vegetable in many American
homes. Crunchy and fresh to eat on its own or shared
in cheese and vegetable dips, there’s no comparing the
taste!
Packed with rich nutrients, cauliflower or cabbage
flower is one of the commonly used flower-vegetables. Its
compact flower heads hold numerous health benefiting
phtyo-nutrients such as vitamins, indole-3carbinol, sulforaphane etc., that help
prevent overweight, diabetes
and offer protection from
prostate, ovarian, and
cervical cancers.
Health benefits of
Cauliflower
It is very low in
calories. 100 g of
the fresh cauliflower
head provides
only 26 calories.
Never theless, it
comprises of several
health-benefiting
antioxidants and vitamins
in addition to be low in fat and
zero cholesterol. Its florets contain
about 2 g of dietary fiber per 100 g; providing
about 5% of recommended value. Fresh cauliflower is
an excellent source of vitamin C; 100 g provides about
48.2 mg or 80% of daily recommended value. Vitamin-C
is a proven antioxidant helps fight against harmful free
radicals, boosts immunity and prevents infections and
cancers.
Cauliflower contains several anti-cancer phytochemicals like sulforaphane and plant sterols such as
indole-3-carbinol, which appears to function as an antiestrogen agent. Together, these compounds have proven
benefits against prostate, breast, cervical, colon, ovarian
cancers by virtue of their cancer-cell growth inhibition,
cytotoxic effects on cancer cells.
Furthermore, Di-indolyl-methane (DIM), a lipid
soluble compound present abundantly in Brassica
group of vegetables, including cauliflower, has found
to be effective as immune modulator, anti-bacterial
and anti-viral agent. This compound brings out
these functions by virtue of its ability to
synthesize and potentiate InterferonGamma receptors at the cellular
level. DIM has currently
been found application
in the treatment of
recurring respiratory
papillomatosis
caused by the
Human Papilloma
Virus (HPV) and is
in Phase III clinical
trials for cervical
dysplasia.
It contains good
amounts of many
vital B-complex groups
of vitamins such as folates,
pantothenic acid (vitamin B5),
pyridoxine (vitamin B6) and thiamin
(vitamin B1), niacin (B3) as well as vitamin K. These
vitamins is essential in the sense that body requires them
from external sources to replenish and required for fat,
protein and carbohydrate metabolism.
Further, it is an also good source of minerals such
as manganese, copper, iron, calcium and potassium.
Manganese is used in the body as a co-factor for the
antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase. Potassium
is an important intracellular electrolyte helps counter
the hypertension effects of sodium.
