THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A MORE IMPORTANT TIME to prioritize our children’s
civic education. A recent report issued by the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the
University of Pennsylvania found that 35% of Americans could not name a single branch
of government and only 36% were able to name all three. Today’s young people have
access to a large amount of information, but need an understanding of the foundations
of our country and the structure of our society to become informed community
members, voters, leaders, jurors, and good citizens. They need Discovering Justice.

This past year, Discovering Justice brought civic education to more than 19,000 elementary
and middle school students, primarily from underserved communities, through innovative
curriculum, professional development for teachers, experiential field trips to the Moakley
U.S. Courthouse, and 11-week afterschool programs that culminate in community events
at courthouses in Boston, Lowell, New Bedford, and Worcester. Through our programs,
students are challenged to think critically, debate respectfully, and collaborate. They
actively explore justice, equality, rights and responsibilities, immigration, and the U.S.
Constitution. Our model of applying classroom-based curriculum to courthouse-based
activities brings civics to life and generates meaningful and memorable experiences. Just
ask any of the students – years later – about their second grade field trip to the Moakley
U.S. Courthouse. You’ll hear all about the mock trial during which they were transformed
into lawyers, jurors, judges, clerks, and witnesses to determine rightful ownership of a
beloved teddy bear left out in the rain.
We are at an exciting time of growth for Discovering Justice. Our literacy-building justice
curriculum, which has been taught exclusively in elementary schools, is now expanding into
middle school to more deeply connect our curricular and experiential learning. Beginning
this year in sixth grade, students will compare and contrast the U.S. Constitution with the
constitutions of Brazil, Cambodia, China, India, Iraq, South Africa, and Ukraine. Through
informational texts and historical fiction, students will delve into the culture, geography,
and government of countries that reflect the demographics of school districts and
communities in Massachusetts. Over the next three years, we will develop curriculum for
kindergarten, seventh, and eighth grades to achieve a true continuum of K-8 civic education.
Discovering Justice empowers students to embrace the values of civic responsibility. The
influence of our programs is felt far beyond classrooms; we help create school cultures of
fairness, respect, and responsibility. Together with students, teachers, principals, lawyers,
judges, and community volunteers, “We are Discovering Justice.”

CHILDREN DISCOVERING JUSTICE
STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS
Children Discovering Justice (CDJ)
empowers children to stand up for
their beliefs, resolve differences
in constructive ways, and develop
creative solutions to problems. This
16-week literacy-based social studies
curriculum for grades one through
six, with grade seven being developed
this year, provides students with the tools they need
to understand sophisticated ideas such as democracy,
tolerance, rights, responsibilities, and the connection
between rules and the law. CDJ is taught in schools in
Boston, Cambridge, Lowell, Watertown, New Bedford,
and Worcester and includes courthouse field trips
which build on classroom lessons and introduce
students to the justice system.
Stand Up for Your Rights, an
afterschool experiential learning

school students into appellate
lawyers. Working with a team
of attorney volunteers, students
delve into the Bill of Rights,
explore how constitutional
protections apply in public schools, and come to
understand the complexities of balancing the rights
of individuals with the safety and welfare needs of
communities. At the end of 11 weeks, students argue
constitutional issues before Appellate Panels composed
of actual judges and experienced attorneys.

As a second grader at the Cunniff Elementary School in
Watertown last year, Arushi Iyer learned about justice
through the Children Discovering Justice curriculum
and took part in a teddy bear mock trial at the Moakley
U.S. Courthouse. Arushi is also the author of one of the
winning poems (at right) selected as part of our Poetry
Jam contest “Discovering Justice in My Community.”

Lowell middle school student Pechthida Kim has

justice means fair or morally correct behavior and
treatment. Justice is something that everyone should
be treated with, whether or not they are citizens of
the United States. America is the embodiment of
justice, and that is why the population of immigrants

Joseph Jussaume, a teacher and lawyer in Lowell, has been
actively involved with Discovering Justice for several years,
