www.stoneoakpoa.com Volume 19 No 12 In This Issue: From The Property Manager 2014 Winter Celebration SAWS Billing Schedule Change Hardy Oak Extension & Stone Oak Road Repairs DIY Projects to Help You Whip Winter Reduce the Risk of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning DECEMBER 2014 As another year comes to a close, we look back with appreciation to the Stone Oak community for helping us keep community spirit alive. Your POA hosted many successful community events in 2014. In October, our Arbor Day event was beneficial to the community, and fun for all. In April, our first Rain Barrel Workshop, sponsored in conjunction with SAWS, Trinity Glen Rose Water District, and Texas A&M Agrilife, was a huge success. We scheduled a second workshop in September, and it filled up within weeks. If you missed this wonderful opportunity, we have our next workshop scheduled for March 7th – Texas A&M Agrilife will start taking reservations after January 1st at 467-6575. On March 7th, we will also be hosting our Spring Donation & Dumping Event. This has proven to be a very popular opportunity for residents to clean out their closets and garages. The City will have a dump trailer on site for your larger items, and Angels of Hope will have a truck for Donations. April 18th, we will be hosting our first community shredding event. This has been a frequent request, and we are happy to provide the opportunity to our property owners. We have also received many requests for a hazardous waste pick-up event, and are working with the District 9 office in hopes of coordinating one within 2015. Please continue to watch our website for the most up to date information, and remember, you can now pay your assessments online! www.StoneOakPOA.com Our hope is you will find your new year filled with happiness and light! From our office to your home, happy holidays! Meg Lorente, Property Manager On Behalf of the Association 2014 Winter Celebration On December 6th, Meg Lorente, Property Manager, and Viki Melton, Board Member, represented your Stone Oak POA at the 2014 Winter Celebration. Thank you to those who stopped by to say hello! We are always happy to speak to members of the community, listen to suggestions and concerns, and work towards a stronger community. PAGE 3 SAWS Billing Schedule Changing in 2015 Billing cycles for some residential and commercial SAWS customers – including the Stone Oak area – will change beginning January 2015. ■ The change will help SAWS become more efficient and further integrate former BexarMet service areas into a unified meter reading schedule. ■ Affected customers will receive a customized letter in December explaining how this will impact when their meter is read and their billing due date. ■ Only some customers will be affected by this change. ■ Due to this change, some customers may receive an unusually low or high billing period for their January 2015 bill, as some Stone Oak - December 2014 - Vol 19 No 12 accounts were re-assigned to a billing cycle that ends on a different date. This will affect the January bill only. After that, the customer’s monthly billing period will range between the customary 28 to 32 days. ■ If you received a letter from SAWS explaining this change but need more information, visit: saws.org/billing or call 210233-2023. SAWS asks for your patience and cooperation during this process. No action needs to be taken on your part. SAWS remains committed to providing reliable and affordable water and wastewater services. Ensuring that your water meter is read properly and efficiently as possible is part of that goal. ©Neighborhood News, Inc. PAGE 4 This article is not available online. “Am I crazy? PAGE 18 Reduce the Risk of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Natural gas is a great energy source for home and business use. If it’s properly used, it can be a safe, clean and efficient fuel for stoves, ovens, furnaces, water heaters and fireplace log starters. However, if gas appliances are used incorrectly or are not properly maintained, dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (also known as the “silent killer”) can result. As temperatures begin to drop and the desire to keep your home warm increases, CPS Energy urges customers to use fuelburning heating equipment safely to avoid carbon-monoxide (CO) poisoning. Safety First... s You cannot see or smell carbon monoxide. If you or your family suddenly experiences severe headaches or feels nauseated, tired, dizzy or faint, get out of your home immediately. Call the fire department at 9-1-1 and CPS Energy at 353-HELP (3534357). s If you suspect carbon monoxide in your home, open windows to ventilate the area and shut off your furnace and other fuelburning appliances. s A natural gas appliance getting adequate oxygen and adjusted properly will have a blue pilot or burner flame. A yellow or orange flame may indicate a problem and should be checked by a qualified technician. Make it a habit to have your fuel-burning appliances inspected at the beginning of every winter season. Also, call CPS Energy at 353-2222 if you need help with gas pilot lighting. s Install a carbon monoxide detector near the area where your family sleeps. Be familiar with the sound the alarm makes if CO is detected. Check the batteries every time you change the time on your clock each spring and fall. s If an alarm sounds, make sure it is the CO detector and not the smoke alarm. Check your family for symptoms. Don’t ignore symptoms, particularly if more than one person is feeling them. Other Things to Keep in Mind... s When using a gas space heater, leave a window open a couple of inches for proper ventilation. s Don’t try to heat a room with your gas range, oven or clothes dryer. It’s more expensive and it’s dangerous. s Never leave a fire smoldering in your fireplace, and never use the fireplace and central furnace at the same time. s Never use a charcoal grill or a barbecue grill indoors. s Never use a portable gas camp stove indoors. s Fuel-burning appliances should always have the proper ventilation, according to their manufacturer’s instructions, and never be operated in an enclosed space. s Provide adequate combustion air according to appliance manufacturer recommendations. Make sure appliance fresh air intakes are not blocked or restricted. Keep vents and chimneys clear of debris or other blockages. s When purchasing gas equipment, buy only equipment carrying the seal of a national testing agency, such as the American Gas Association or Underwriters’ Laboratories. s Never let your car or truck idle in the garage with the garage door shut.
