DECEMBER 21, 2014 THEY’RE WAITING I have to be honest. On Monday morning I was told that I absolutely had to have a bulletin article by Tuesday. Because I had a funeral in Our Lady of Perpetual Help, I told Lynn that this year there would be no bulletin article—it would be sufficient to say Merry Christmas and leave it at that. I was not happy, but decided the best thing to do was not to get myself overwhelmed and pressured. And then it happened I was up in my living room and I had just finished praying the Divine Office, the prayers priests say every single day for all of the Church, and the thought came to me: You have to write something—even if it only helps one person. What crossed my mind was all the preparations that are going on for Christmas—and the one thing that is most often forgotten, overlooked or avoided—confession for Christmas. There is one sacrament that Pope Francis talks about over and over again—Penance. Every time he has the opportunity, he asks people to go to confession. Recently (December 8th) he was at the Vatican and by the magic of a tablet, he lit the world’s largest Christmas tree. But Pope Francis asked people to turn the lights on in their souls. He put it this way: “If you have something dark on your soul, ask the Lord’s forgiveness. This is a beautiful chance Christmas gives us—to clean up our souls. Don’t be afraid—the priest is merciful, he forgives everything in the name of God, because God forgives everything. “ Here at St. Aidan there is a superabundant schedule of Christmas confessions. The complete schedule appears in this bulletin and will be posted on all the doors of the church. Many people put off shopping until the last possible moment and many tend to do the same thing with confession. That is why in addition to the other times we are having SIX HOURS OF CONFESSIONS on Christmas Eve— from noon until 6:00 PM. So if you tend to procrastinate, there still will be plenty of time to go to confession. If you want to go to another parish, you can check their confession schedule online. I pray that at least one person will read my words and come back to the Lord for Christmas. Our Lord, the Blessed Mother and all the angels and saints are all pulling for you –and waiting. On behalf of all the priests, deacons and parish staff, I wish each and everyone of you a very blessed Christmas. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. Christmas is a time to celebrate the nearness of God, to give thanks for all the graces we had received, and is also a time to remember and pray for all our children, family members, friends, who have left the Church by many doors. My heart aches at this time, for my children and grandchildren who has stopped going to Mass, of my longing to bring all those fallen-away back to the door of the manger to once again encounter Jesus! We need to remind all that greet us with “Happy Holidays” of the joy of Christmas, answering “Merry Christmas to you!” especially when we are shopping let’s call it what it is, our Christmas gifts, so we cannot be part of this movement by the secular world to remove Christ, the reason for all celebrations, from this time of the season. I was shopping with a friend, when we notice that the sales person was reminding us of all the “Holiday’s presents” around the store. My friend asks to see the manager and tells him that “until you and your sales people does not acknowledge Christmas, I will shop for my Christmas presents elsewhere.” It is important to keep our family and Faith traditions alive when we celebrate this joyous time, trying to keep away from all the distractions the secular world open to us. Sharing our Christmas gifts with the many that could not afford them, is to show love for one another. If at all possible, wrap your presents and included a CD from our kiosk in them, especially for young people. We have very important talks for teens and young adults in the CDs now, and even if they listen to them out of curiosity, it would make a change in how they think. Now a reminder: At all the Christmas Masses we will give away the book “The Joy of the Gospel”, it is “FREE” and it is from our Pope Francis. Pick one up, and after you read it give it to someone away from the Church, we surely knows a few! I wish all of you a joyful and full of God’s graces, Christmas! "The threats (to religious freedom) are more subtle (in the West), many people don't even perceive them; they happen bureaucratically, or legislatively, or judicially," said Archbishop William Lori. "Whereas in other parts of the world ... it's bloody, violent, overt, but in both cases it's a denial of the rights of conscience and the freedom to relate to one's own God."
