The first Olympic Qualifying
event in Australia under the new
IJF World Ranking system was
held at the WIN Entertainment
Centre in Wollongong on 14-15
November. As we are now in the
final qualifying period for Rio 2016,
a large entry was expected. Unfortunately the original numbers registered did not materialise, and the
competition was a little smaller than
anticipated. Nevertheless, the presence of teams from Korea, Canada,
Britain, USA and Hong Kong, plus a
smattering of other Europeans,
added plenty of international flavour
to the tournament.
There was
plenty of anticipation as to how the
home team would perform when
faced with this level of opposition –
it would be a real test.
And so it proved; with the overseas contingent taking the lion’s
share of the medals, but there
were enough podium placings,
and some spectacular performances from individuals among
the Australian team, to show we
can hold our own at international
level.
At the top of the medal table was
the strong Korean contingent, with
four gold, two bronze and two silver.
Close behind was the young Canadian team, with two gold, three sil-

ver and eight bronze. Such is the
depth of talent in Canada that their
athletes filled all four medal placings in
the men’s 73kg, led by last years’
winner in Samoa Arthur Margelidon.
Third was the USA, with two gold, four
silver and one bronze. The US team
swept the lightweight categories –
winning the men’s 60kg and 66kg, and
the women’s 48kg.
For the Aussies, our best result
came from Katharina Haecker who
took our only gold, in the 63kg.
Katharina’s win was emphatic, ending with a smashing kouchigari in
the final against Leilani Akiyama
(USA). The Aussies ended up in fifth
place among the nineteen competing nations.
BLACK BELT REGISTER HONOURS PETER HERRMANN
A disappointingly small turnout for this night, which was largely arranged as a tribute to Peter Hermann 9TH Dan, honouring the contribution he has made to Australian judo over the past thirty years.
JFANSW President Rob Ivers and Gavin Kelly both paid tribute to
Peter on his illustrious competitive and coaching career, telling some
amusing anecdotes about their experiences with Peter as members of
National teams. The evening also recognised the long career of Gail
Galea with the JFA.

For the small UNSW group on hand,
another highlight of the evening was
the announcement of Amy Meyer as
the recipient of the prestigious Jim
Robinson Award for 2014. This is the
highest honour the BBR can bestow.

accepted the award on Amy’s behalf,
and reminisced on Amy’s career,
which began at the club at the age of
eight.

Apart from Miranda Giambelli, who took silver in a
depleted 78kg category, our UNSW athletes Amy
Meyer, Kiarn Kelly and Oren Janiv couldn’t manage any wins on the day. Our new resident Kiwi
David Jordan had a great match with Nam (KOR),
taking his classy opponent to full time, and only
losing out on a very dubious score.

Some encouraging performances in the AUS
team came from several of the youngsters;
notably Michael Valent and Jake Bensted
(VIC) Anthony Kouros (NSW) and Ellen
Wright (QLD) all of whom had some big wins,
and just finished short of the medal podiums.
Chloe Rayner (QLD) repeated her bronze
medal performance from Glasgow in the
48kg category.
The sole entry from the Czech Republic ,
Alena Eiglova (above) was “adopted” by
the UNSW girls and went away happy
with her bronze in the 70kg after some
good fighting.

So the tournament came to a close, and the
OJU and JFA can be rightly pleased with
the event. It is to be expected that next year
will be even bigger and better as the Olympic qualificaton period for Rio de Janeiro
draws to a close.
Following the competition, most teams
attended the training camp which was
held at the Illawarra International club
dojo. The camp gave athletes, especially
the young Australians, the opportunity to
train with the international visitors. Unfortunately the camp was marred by a
serious injury to young Kosta Kouros,
and we wish him a full recovery.

LOCAL COMPETITION SUCCESSES
.SHINSEI COMPETITION 30 NOVEMBER
A small but motivated group from UNSW Juniors attended the Shinsei
Comp at Blacktown on 30 November.
Tasman France keeps getting bigger (!) and better at each comp. He
finished second with some hard fought battles that will set him up well
for the State Comp on the 14th December. Nic Leong had his hardest
fight against fellow club member Brendon Miu. Both boys fought well
trying different attacks in different directions with Nic finishing with the
gold and Brendon with Silver.
James Murdoch found it tough going in his first comp but came
through slightly bumped and bruised but better for the experience. The
first comp for anyone is generally a tough experience.
Dylan Katz moved up a category and found it challenging but got better with each fight. Dylan had one of the toughest fight of the day with
a 5 minute 33second Golden Score battle that he eventually won,
showing some great fighting spirit and determination. Lakov Ivanets is
adjusting slowly to his new age group but showed confidence to finish
with a Bronze. Fynn Lowe showed spirit in his first competition.

JFA (NSW) CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE
UNSW had a big group at
this competition, and came
away with some great results across the board, as
the table shows.
Once again the youngster
showed the way, with gold
medals to Dylan Katz, Dylan
Nguyen and Ryan Koenig.
Strong fighting by some of
the seniors also produced
several wins.

UNSW PEOPLE AND EVENTS
Oren Janiv and Miranda Giambelli both
competed in the Continental Open in Port
Louis, Mauritius over the weekend 8-9 November. After winning his first fight, Oren had
the bad luck to come up against the eventual
gold medallist from the USA. A loss there put
Oren into the repechage, but he was unable to
proceed further, finishing in seventh place.
Miranda also came up against the gold medallist in her first fight , eventually taking fifth
place.
In all, there were five Aussie athletes competing. They all won early fights, but unfortunately
none made it onto the podium.
The club hosted several international visitors
recently. Here to compete in the OJU Cup
were Nik Kossor and Ashleigh Hejlik (shown
below with Warren and Amy) from the USA,
and Alena Eiglova from the Czech Republic.
The visiting athletes all trained at the club, and
were warmly welcomed by members. UNSW
is well known internationally and is always
pleased to welcome overseas judoka.
At the senior grading on 4 December, a
large group successfully passed the examination for promotion. Among them were a
number of senior grades: Toki Ling was
awarded 1st Kyu (brown belt) and Billy Waters and Josie Choy achieved 2nd Kyu (blue
belt).

their NCAS qualification course on 6 December. The girls are shown here with

NSW. They will now become even more
involved in helping Warren with his kids’
classes. Well done girls!
BIG NIGHT OUT AT CLUB XMAS PARTY
A great night to cap off the year for the club, attended by some 70 members, families and friends. Senior coaches Warren and JB
spoke of the achievements and highlights of the year, noting that the club is officially the largest in the country, being more than twice
the size of the next biggest! Particularly pleasing is the fact that we cater for judo at all levels – from 3 and 4 year olds, to elite competitors. Warren also announced the traditional awards to those members who have been most successful throughout the year (see

UNSW JUDO PROMINENT IN RANDWICK SPORTS AWARDS
UNSW Judo was well represented at the presentation evening for Randwick Council’s “Sporting
Champions” Awards 2014, and came away with
some pleasing results.
National Junior Champion Dylan Nguyen capped a
big year in being named best Junior Male. Other
club members to be honoured were Amy Meyer,
Dylan Katz, Giorgia and Tiana Goutzas, all of whom
received commendation certificates for their efforts.
Head coach Warren Rosser was on hand with the
kids to represent the club’s management and was
very pleased to see UNSW so prominent in the community sporting scene.
