December 21, 2014 fourth Sunday of advent Dear Parishioners, As we come to this last Sunday of Advent, our excitement is peaking in anticipation of the holiest day of the year. We are ready to welcome the many guests that come to visit our Cathedral on Christmas. Our parish home is decorated. Inside, the trees are lit, and the poinsettias and roses are hung. Outside the crèche proclaims the coming of the Lord. “Prepare the way 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org for the Lord . . . And all mankind shall see the salvation of God.” [Isaiah 40:3, Luke 3:6] Please help me welcome all who will come to our parish home to celebrate the birth of the newborn king on Christmas, and may this holy time bring you the peace of silence, the joy of happiness and the wonder of God’s presence among us. The circular shape of the Advent Wreath is used to symbolize God the Father and eternal life. The wreath holds four candles that are lit over the four weeks of Advent. Traditionally, each of the four candles on an Advent wreath has their own meaning. The lighting of the last purple candle of Advent symbolizes Peace, reminding us of the message of the angels: “Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men.” Parish Offices Closed The Parish Offices at the Cathedral will be closed in observance of Christmas from Tuesday, December 23 through Friday, December 26. The offices will reopen on Monday, December 29 and close again December 31 and January 1 so our staff may spend time with their families. Sacramental emergency requests will be handled by the duty priest. O Antiphons-Advent Evening Prayer The “O Antiphons” refer to the seven antiphons that are recited (or chanted) preceding the Magnificat during Vespers of the Liturgy of the Hours. They cover the special period of Advent preparation known as the Octave before Christmas, December 17-23. They will be held nightly in the D’Youville Chapel at 6 pm. Vespers will also take place on Christmas Night at 7 pm in the Cathedral. The Cathedral donated a beautiful 10-foot tree for the Christo Rey school to have on display during their first Christmas! Stewardship of Treasure How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” Psalm 116 When he discovered that Mary was with child, Joseph resolved to end their engagement with as little disgrace as possible. But obedient to the voice of God, he changed those plans and became instead the protector of the child Jesus and his mother, Mary. God grant that I may be as open to the leading of the Holy Spirit! Dear Jesus, as I look at their faces and remember their stories, there are feelings of gratitude and some fear and anxiety. Thank you for these loved ones and please forgive me for the ways I have been less than accepting and loving. Please heal the wounds, division and conflicts that stand between us and help me to remember how dearly you love them. I only want to remember that you have come to save us all. Let me just for a moment, Lord, hold this time in my heart. It is about mysteries and gratitude, unknowing and wrong sizes, snippets of ribbon and screams of delight. With each gift that is opened, no matter how perfect or not, let me feel again the many ways you gift us each day, especially with your presence in our hearts and the presence of each other in our lives. Amen. FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT Christ the King School Tricia Ward, Principal • 404-267-3669 • www.christking.org Jingle Jog Under the direction of our PE Teachers and with the help of parents and faculty, CKS students participated in the school’s fourteenth Advent Jingle Jog on December 5 to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society at the Cathedral of Christ the King. After making a donation, the students donned bells and holiday hats as they jogged around the Garden Hills Duck Pond, ringing the Advent bells of hope, peace, joy and love for those who would receive their gifts. DECEMBER 21, 2014 family & Children faith formation Elaine McCollum • 404-267-3692• [email protected] Happy Caroling Many thanks to the parents and children that joined us for caroling in the neighborhood of the Cathedral on December 19. We took great joy in touching lives with our songs, making new friends, and enjoying cookies, cocoa and candy canes. REMINDER NO PSR Classes on Sunday, December 28 – Merry Christmas! Joyous Toys Kindergarteners at Christ the King School participated in the Joyous Toys project sponsored by the Buckhead Christian Ministry. They donated new toys to be given to children in families who are going through difficult times this holiday season. Many children will wake up to presents on Christmas morning thanks to Joyous Toys. December Prayer Intentions Every month Pope Francis announces his monthly prayer intentions, and requests that we include the intentions in our personal prayers. Christmas, hope for humanity. That the birth of the Redeemer may bring peace and hope to all people of good will. Parents. That parents may be true evangelizers, passing on to their children the precious gift of faith. 5 CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING ADVENT prayer & reflection Advent is almost over. Christmas is 4 days away. How have we prepared? No, not, “have all the gifts been bought and the decorations put up and the food prepared,” but how have we personally prepared. Today’s Gospel comes from Luke and recounts the Angel Gabriel appearing to Mary to tell her, “Do not be afraid.” Mary was to conceive the Savior of the world and her cousin Elizabeth would conceive John the Baptist, as well. We hear the message, “…nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary with deepest faith accepted the message and the mission. Our goal this Christmas Season and beyond is to accept God’s message and mission. Tough duty and something that will require our deepest faith. Women of the Word A Women’s Bible Study Advent Prayer Oh, dear Lord, they are coming! Like the Wise men wandering toward the stable, visitors are heading to my house. I am so excited about this visit. But I can get so side-tracked about how my house looks, or the food that I serve. I can only keep this prayerful with your help. Help me to stay humble this Advent and Christmas season. You invite us into the humility of the stable where you were born. Help me to remember that humble-ness and the simple joy of your birth. Let me stay focused on my guests, not on myself and my worries about my house. Guide me in rejoicing in who these people are and in loving them freely. Amen.
