Every insurance plan is different and there is no guarantee of
coverage in all cases. Below are guidelines to help you receive
reimbursement from your insurance provider.
Contact your insurance company to learn if
they will cover your hair prosthesis and
information necessary to submit the claim.
Massachusetts health insurance members:
Massachusetts law provides for coverage of hair
prosthesis up to $350 per calendar year for anyone
undergoing cancer treatment.
•
Ask your physician to write you a prescription for "Cranial/Hair
Prosthesis for medical purposes. Alopecia secondary to
chemotherapy or radiation therapy."
•
Get a receipt for the wig your purchase with the prescription and
submit it to your insurance company
•
Denials are common- if this occurs resubmit the claim with a
picture of yourself without hair and request a review by medical
review board. Send new claim to claim supervisor.
•
Ask your physician to write a letter explaining that the prosthesis is
needed as a medical necessity and is not cosmetic
•
Keep a copy of all correspondence, document telephone
conversations (with dates and person spoken to) in writing. Most
policies do not spell out exclusions under prosthetics; check your
policy carefully.

Have many wig banks throughout the country that offer free wigs for people with cancer. Call ACS for all current wig
bank locations.
Wigs are provided to women diagnosed with breast cancer and who have no insurance or low resources. Call the 24-hour
Network of Strength Hotline at 1-800-221-2141 to speak with a peer counselor about receiving a wig or prosthesis, and
learn more about selecting and wearing a wig or prosthesis.
The CWHL program provides a hair replacement, a care kit, a band of hair, a turban, a hat, and free styling services to
children (under age 21) with medically-related hair loss. CWHL products and services are provided at no cost to
recipients. Application available online.
