What is Supplemental Workshops in Science?
It’s a campus program that offers workshops that meet twice weekly throughout the quarter for students
enrolled in any lecture listed on the other side. During the workshop, you will review lecture notes, discuss
important concepts, develop study strategies, and prepare for tests. You will work closely with other students
and earn one unit of elective credit. Workshops start the first week of classes and continue until the last week
of classes before finals. You are expected to attend your workshop regularly, bring notes, textbooks, and
questions, participate in discussions, and work together as a team.
Why should I sign up?
There are several reasons: concept mastery, a higher grade, and
increased academic self-confidence. That’s a significant
advantage! In addition, you will also learn useful study skills that
will help with other classes.
Who leads the workshop?
They are led by an upper division student who is proficient in the
subject. The facilitator guides the discussion and keeps things on
track. Your facilitator attends every lecture in order to stay current.
Since SWS began in 1991, an
average of 92% of the students
who regularly attend their
workshop pass the lecture
with an A, B or C compared
with 84% who do not enroll in
the workshop.
Okay! How do I enroll?
Enrollment is only through your Student Center and you must be enrolled in the corresponding lecture (see
schedule, over)


During Initial Enrollment Period: If you are enrolled in the corresponding lecture (see schedule), you can add a
workshop via your Student Center during your initial registration rotation. Logon to the Portal, go to “Student Center”,
and click on the word “Enroll.” Insert 4-digit workshop number.
Winter quarter initial registration rotations begin November 10th and close December 7th.

During Open Enrollment: You can also add a workshop during the Open Enrollment period from Tuesday,
December 9th to Tuesday, December 30th at 3 PM if space is still available.

After classes begin: there’s one last chance to add a workshop after the quarter begins, if space is available, and if
you are enrolled in the corresponding lecture (see schedule).
o Attend the evening workshop and obtain a permission number from the facilitator.
o Logon to your Student Center and use the permission number to Add.
o Begin attending the workshop.
o The last day to add using a permission number is the 8th day of classes which is January 14th. After that date,
workshops are closed just like other classes*. Auditing is not permitted.
*Questions on Registration? Visit the Office of the Registrar webpage at:
http://registrar.calpoly.edu/
*A “Late Add Appeal” process is available for a $20 fee and may be approved in special cases if class spaces are
available. Consult the workshop facilitator and/or the Office of the Registrar. Usually, the “Late Add Appeal” deadline is
early in Week 3 of the term.
