This being my final President’s Message, in addition to the holiday season, it seems appropriate to give thanks to all of you in this community who make this such a special place to live. The members of this Chamber, who I see actively involved in almost every community event, deserve our deep appreciation for volunteering their time and energy to enrich and improve our lives on a daily basis. From my vantage point, we live in a vital community with tremendous resources and potential. To those of you who regularly contribute to bettering our quality of life, and who can be counted on to step forward regardless of the difficulties involved, I thank you. To those of you who have recently moved into our neighborhood or who have not yet decided whether to engage in local community issues — I urge you to do so. Without your voice, and your input, we will not be the best community we can be. Get involved, stay involved, and you will surely make a difference. Our Chamber is unique in that — unlike other more business-minded Chambers in larger cities — we are focused on public service and giving back to the community we have chosen to live or make our livelihoods within. The unparalleled success of Green Day is a testament to the potential in our community that can be unlocked if we all pull together for a good cause. Though we will not always agree on matters of great public importance, we can agree to be respectful of each other, civil with each other, and neighborly toward each other. Indeed, we can even be nice to each other. In the end we are judged not by what we say, but what we do. Happy holidays and I wish each of you a peaceful, prosperous, and glorious New Year. Picture perfect weather greeted us all on the morning of Saturday, October 18 for Green Day 2014. In fact, you could say it was “Chamber of Commerce weather”! It was clear, dry, and under sparkling blue skies nearly 4,000 local residents jammed NE 2nd Avenue for our annual street fair. At times there were so many people that attendees had to wait to navigate certain blocks. A record 130 vendors set up shop to interact with residents and the 9500 block was the busiest, with a stage with live music, eight food trucks, food and beverage vendors, and seating for the music and dining. A bustling “Kids Zone” anchored the north end thanks to the generosity of North Shore Medical Center. Kids ages 2 to 16 climbed a rock wall, played fussball, jumped on a trampoline, and worked off energy in bounce houses. Barry University’s Athletic Village also offered kids the chance to show off their moves. The Chamber of Commerce thanks Co-Chairs Kim Krause and Susan Ackley, the Green Day Planning Committee, as well as Miami Shores Village for setup, breakdown, cleanup and security support. NEWS Barry community celebrates history and mission with Founders’ Week Barry University hosted its annual Founders’ Week celebration November 8-14 to commemorate the school’s history, mission, Catholic identity, and Dominican heritage. Held each year in November, Founders’ Week pays tribute to Barry’s origins and remembers the university’s founders: Mother Mary Gerald Barry, Bishop Patrick Barry, Monsignor William Barry, former Miami Shores Mayor John Thompson, and the Adrian Dominican Sisters, for whom Barry is a sponsored institution. The weeklong festivities included events such as the Founders’ 5K Fun Run, Founders’ Week Mass, a distinguished lecture featuring social justice advocate Linda Plitt Donaldson, PhD, the Plant the Campus Green beautification project, and the crowd-pleasing Community Fest – an afternoon filled with games and spirit competitions. Through the celebration of Founders’ Week, the Barry community seeks to strengthen their personal and collective understanding of how to best live the Barry mission and core commitments. Podiatric Medicine students achieve 100% pass rate on Part 1 of national exam Barry University’s School of Podiatric Medicine reported 100% pass rates for the class of 2016 on the American Podiatric Medical Licensing Exam (APMLE) Part 1 board examination. This is the second consecutive year that Barry students have attained this benchmark. Students enrolled in any of the nine colleges of podiatric medicine in the country are required to pass Parts 1 and 2 of the APMLE series before beginning residency training. Part 3 of the APMLE is taken during residency. Dissection without a cadaver: Barry University introduces 3-D interactive teaching tool for health science students Barry University has recently acquired new technology that allows current and future physicians to examine the human body like never before through the use of life-sized, virtual anatomy imagery. Like a gigantic tablet, the Anatomage table allows students and faculty to virtually dissect the human anatomy layer by layer. They can customize various pathologies and visualize skeletal tissues, muscles, organs, and soft tissue. Barry is one of only four schools in Florida, and the only school in Miami-Dade County, to own the new equipment. This new technology allows medical schools to have an alternative to traditional cadavers. Supporters of the 3-D virtual technology say inexperienced students can practice their skills and redo their incisions in a way that real cadavers do not allow. Medical students can to further sharpen their skills by the time they are ready to work on a real person.s The same holds true for experienced physicians, who can use scans of actual patients and inspect body images before surgery to minimize any surprises during an operation. They can see what is there before making the first incision. Surgeons can also use the Anatomage table to locate specific pathology in several views and decide treatment plans and post-surgical reviews. The Egret • Miami Shores | Biscayne Park | El Portal • December 2014 Unlike plastic models, the table allows students to view structures at infinite angles and better understand how different structures relate within the body. The table offers realistic visualization of 3-D anatomy by combining imaging from X-rays, ultrasounds, and MRIs. The Anatomage table costs approximately $80,000 and can hold up to a terabyte of data, which equals information for about 1,000 patients. To find out about submitting information on behalf of your favorite school, please contact Jesse Walters at the Chamber at 305-754-5466. Miami Shores Community Church School (MSCCS) parents enjoyed the annual October Paella Night in conjunction with the bi-monthly Parents Night Out. Each year, the school organizes this fun event for parents to become better acquainted with one another at the start of the school year. They had an amazing turn-out and plans are in the works for another one this Spring. The MSCCS Debate Club (selected students from second through fifth grades) organized its first of several fund-raising car washes to raise funds to travel to Washington, D.C. Last school year, the students traveled to Tallahassee. MSCCS’s annual toy-drive is underway in partnership with Toys For Tots to bring holiday gifts to children in our community who are less fortunate. The Cushman School celebrated the heritage of its Hispanic neighbors when students from their sister school in Madrid, the Altair School, came to visit Cushman for two weeks. Twenty students and two teachers joined host families and were welcomed to the campus. Students learned about each other’s culture and language. Last year, fifteen Cushman students went to Spain and experienced the culture of their host families. Also during October’s Hispanic Heritage Month, elementary and middle school students connected with others from Hispanic countries, real-time, and engaged in projects and/or conversations about cultural differences. Teachers also provided real-time English and Spanish classes to one another. Many classes engaged in Hispanic culture through cooking, literature, games, and Latin music. Lessons also included Chapultepec, Dia de la Rasa and Dia de los Muertos. Fifth grade students have been working on a Hispanic artist project, and upon the completion, will present their favorite Hispanic artist. The School’s music department joined with the PE coaches to teach the children two Hispanic dances, which was part of an overall ‘International’ theme for the dance assembly at the end of October. Montessori Pre-School The Cushman Middle School basketball team recently won the Monsignor Pace Middle School Basketball Tournament Championship. The team started the tournament by beating Moore 43-16. Cushman the defeated the defending champions, St. Rose, 38-16. The semifinal game saw the Cougars defeat Blessed Trinity 44-5. In the final, Cushman faced St. Mary’s and won the championship game 38-26. By winning the Pace preseason tournament, Cushman starts the season 4-0 ahead of its South Florida Middle School Conference schedule. Miami Shores Elementary School is celebrating another successful fall with participation in Miami Shores Green Day, a fall book exchange, and a fall dance. The school’s PTA has also announced it’s 2014-2015 development goals, including the establishment of the Project Pledge Fund to help raise funds and awareness for the top-rated school. The goals, as directed by the principal, Brenda Swain, are to renew the school’s Accelerated Reader Program, replace 925 books in the Media Center, and replace classroom desktop computers for the teachers. The budget for this fundraising year has been set at $25.50 per attending child/$587 per classroom. The total amount needed is estimated at $20,400 to cover this year’s portion of the financial gap. The PTA asks the community to please rise to the challenge, as many of you did with ice buckets and pink ribbons, and make a donation to the Miami Shores Elementary PTA through its Pay Pal account at http://bitly.com/1slMwit or via checks dropped off at the school. Doctors Charter School (DCS) urges you to save the date for their annual fund raiser, “Evening in the Courtyard”. It will be held on February 6th, 2015 and is sponsored by the DCS-PTSA. They were led by Jonathan Gill (14th place), Tristan Cravello (25th place), Darwin Abreu (26th place), Alex Pegg (35th place), and Torrian Wallace (47th place). The DCS Music Department’s Annual Winter Concert will be held on December 16th at 7:00 p.m. featuring an evening of music performed by the band and chorus. Tickets can be purchased at the door. You researched all the local universities, you were impressed by a few, especially impressed by one, you hadn’t known that much about Barry, even though it’s been around since 1940, you were surprised by the large campus and small typical class size, you like that they have 60+ bachelor programs and a strong NCAA winning record, you like their focus on experiential learning, involved faculty and community roots, but most of all, you like knowing they will be getting a world-class education so close to home. The Miami Shores Country Club donates a $25 gift certificate to a randomly drawn person supplying the correct response. The winner is drawn on the 15th of the month. Last month we ran a photo of the ribbon cutting ceremony when NE 2nd Avenue in downtown Miami Shores was re-opened following construction in 2009. We asked if you could identify the gentleman in a white polo shirt and cargo pants in the foreground, surrounded by local dignitaries. Miami Shores ? History Corner December’S QUESTION: Our winner is always randomly drawn but not this month, and when you read why we trust that you will understand. The name of the person we were looking for was, of course, the late, great Lew Soli, immediate past Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce. The very first call we received was from Mr. Soli’s daughter, Michelle Laurenceau, Miami Shores Police Sargeant. For those of you who guessed correctly, we trust that you will see why this month’s winner must be Lew’s daughter!
