12 DAYS OF
CHRISTMAS
From the Executive Director
Take Time to Stop, Think About the Safety of Your Pets
(Editor’s note: is month, the Link offers a creative perspective
on pet issues facing Sun City Summerlin.)
Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah. My name is Shadow
and I belong to your Executive Director, Sue Papilion. She is
the most important thing in my life and I am only happy when
I am with her. Lately, she has not been around as much as
before, but I know I can count on her to love me, feed me
and take me for walks.
Sometimes, we meet other dogs on our walks, but they
Shadow Papilion
are usually afraid of me because I am so big. I am nice, but
they don’t know it and I have been bitten ve times by smaller dogs that run loose. It is
good that I have not been hurt, but only Sue cares because no owner has ever said they
were sorry when I got bit. e other day when one of the landscapers got bit by a loose
dog, the owner picked up her dog and ran to her car without even seeing if the man
was hurt. Her license plate was given to the police, but why did that lady run? Why
was her dog loose? Did she not care about the man or about the safety of her dog?
We dogs love our owners, but we can do stupid things and it is up to our owners to
keep us from doing stupid things. Sue does not let me run loose because she knows I love
to chase rabbits and quail even if they are in the road. I am not afraid of cars, but Sue is
and she makes me stay with her to cross the street. My owner likes to socialize when she
meets other people, but I get bored, even if they have a dog. One smell of that dog and I
am done and ready to keep walking.
I love my owner and she is all the socialization I need. So I just wanted to tell all
those dog owners who let their dogs run loose to please stop! Two dogs have already
been hit by cars, some have been taken by the dog catcher and many dogs are giving us
good dogs a bad reputation. is holiday season, please be considerate of others and
make a News Year’s resolution to keep your dog safe and on a leash, and don’t forget to
pick up after us, too!

President’s Message
Never a Dull Moment in Sun City Summerlin
Recently, we completed a wonderful
month full of celebration for the 25th anniversary of Sun City Summerlin. It took
many dedicated volunteers, under the
leadership of Link Managing Editor
Jeanette Carrillo. Some of the events
may be repeated in future years, as they
were very popular with our residents.
David Steinman,
President, SCSCAI Good luck and best wishes on trying to
Board of Directors be a part of the 50th year celebration.
We are in the process of converting grass to desert landscape on our golf courses and common areas. e Southern
Nevada Water Authority gave Sun City Summerlin $1 per
square foot to make the change. Our savings on the water bill
will be signi cant when the project is complete. When you
live in the desert, you learn to appreciate the value of conserving water in a drought climate situation. As the look of our
landscape changes near your residence, we trust you will understand why the Board of Directors made the decision to
modify. We have been successful in using the funds from the
Water District without additional money from our Association accounts to achieve the
results.
During the summer months,
I announced that we were working with the city of Las Vegas
to place new directional signs
in our community. ese signs
are in place now to assist our
new residents and visitors. e

given to us, especially our children, grandchildren and

SCSCAI’s 25th Anniversary Events Come to a Close
By Ken Caroccia and Jeannette Carrillo
Whew! Talk about a wild October. Sun City Summerlin

12 events were coordinated by six committees. Here’s a recap:

16 residents getting stuck in an elevator. Talk about an icebreaker. Once inside council chambers, Las Vegas Mayor

David Steinman, accepted.

Bright Colors Equal Safety During
Daily Walks
Color yourself in safety with bright colors as you enjoy
walking in the community. For those who walk in the street,
which is dangerous but not unlawful, the chances of being
seriously injured is exacerbated when covered in dark or
muted colors. To help increase your visibility on the road,
wear bright or neon colors. And, if you prefer to walk in the
street, try to keep to one side and consider stepping onto the
sidewalk when maneuvering a corner.

De-Stressing the Holidays
e holiday season is supposed to be
a time of peace, joy and celebration.
It also can be a time of stress. Anxiety related to party planning, shopping, gift giving, baking, cleaning
and organizing is likely to be overKristie McWhorter,
whelming to many.
MS, CPT, GFI,
e negative effects of stress on Director of Fitness
the body are well known. ey can [email protected]
[email protected]
include increased blood pressure,
headaches, difficulty sleeping, gastrointestinal problems and
even an increased risk of strokes and heart attacks. ere are
several strategies you can adopt to help keep holiday stress
at bay.
Be realistic. Try to set and maintain a budget before you
go shopping, deciding how much you can truly afford to
spend. Consider donating to a charity in someone’s name or
giving homemade gifts. Discuss the idea of a gift exchange
with large families or groups of friends; this can lighten the
load on everyone.
Stay healthy. e holidays are a time to maintain the
healthy lifestyle habits you have worked so hard to maintain
all year. Try to stick to your normal exercise habits and
healthy diets. Decide ahead of time how much you will
indulge and stick to it, thus avoiding regrets later on.
Develop a support network. Take advantage of clubs, organizations and religious or social services nearby to surround
yourself with friends or other people with similar interests.
Be organized. Try to plan ahead and develop a schedule
for baking, visiting and other events. Decide what events are
most important or what can be done another year.
Accept change. Understand as families grow and expand
it can become very difficult for all members to be together on
the holidays. Hold on to traditions as much as possible, but
accept that change can bring new exciting traditions.
Get help. Anxiety and stress are normal, but despite
your best efforts you may nd yourself overwhelmingly sad
or anxious. If you are unable to cope with the activities of
daily life or your feelings of sadness last several weeks, speak
with your doctor or mental health professional because you
may have depression.
Relax and enjoy. Most importantly, take a few moments
each day to relax and appreciate the holidays, your friends
and family, and remember why we celebrate each year.
e Fitness Department staff wishes all the residents a safe
and happy holiday season!

Holiday Safety Tips
We are approaching a wonderful time of year, when we can
take time with our families and especially our grandchildren to celebrate the holiday season. But it is also a time
when we must become even more diligent when planning
and preparing at this time of the year.
When decorating our homes we must be sure that all of
our exterior decorations are rated for outside use and that
all interior decorations are UL approved, are not frayed or
damaged, are installed properly and are not overloading
any electrical outlets. Be sure that a pet or young child will
not be able to reach or knock over a lighted candle or ornament. You must make sure that when purchasing a live tree
that it is kept as fresh as possible and that you keep it
watered during the holidays. When leaving your home,
make sure that all lighted candles, tree lights and novelty
ornaments have been extinguished.
L
Try to do your shopping during the daylight hours; you
will not only avoid the crowds, but it is also a safer time to
shop. If, after shopping at night you feel uncomfortable
walking to your car alone, feel free to ask store personnel or
a shopping center security officer to accompany you. If
making several store visits, place all purchased items in the
trunk of your car so not to entice a would-be thief.
Be on the alert when packages are delivered to your
home; do not open your door until you are satis ed that
you can identify the delivery person. You also may ask that
any package be left outside your door until the person has
left and you feel comfortable opening the door.
e Community Preparedness Committee wishes you
and your family a safe and happy holiday season.

Security Patrol: 254-2303
2014: Internal Improvements For
External Effectiveness
Externally, nothing has changed for
Security Patrol this year. We still
patrol our community 24 hours a
day, every day of the year. We still
let you know when your garage
door is left open after dark. We still
let you know when you have a landscaping water leak pouring money down
the drain, and we still check your house
while you are out of town. We still provide a listening ear,
are a reconciler of pets and owners, and provide a deterrent
to the thieves. We remain very proud of our motto:
Neighbors helping neighbors.
Internally, almost everything has changed this year. We
have a new guiding philosophy. We have a new management approach. We completed a membership database of
about 350 people with 30,000 data elds and 40 queries
and reports. We have implemented a new computer network system with automated backup of les in the cloud,
created an electronic work scheduling system viewable by
members on any device, and we published a Facebook
page. e 5-year-old policies and procedures manual has
been completely rewritten, including 40 procedures, 40 job
descriptions and eight training forms and checklists for a
total of about 220 pages of material.
Internal Security Patrol communications have improved
with a weekly broadcast email, meeting agendas projected
on a screen and minutes published within a few days. Dozens
of alert notices have been generated to disseminate important decisions. An informal, monthly gathering of staff and
board members has provided an opportunity for feedback.
A directory of the nearly 300 street names has been
updated and veri ed as accurate by looking at every street
sign. e Association is being helped to ensure consistency
of information so that proper names and addresses can be
found quickly. e veri ed list of street names is also being
used as an input to a new set of maps for the community
and the Patrol. Emergency contact information for every
household is being pro-actively pursued.
e Patrol’s emergency generator has been rewired to
provide the power needed for essential services, including
the telephones. Gone are the days when you called us during an outage and just got a message. However, the most
signi cant hardware change made this year has probably

gone unnoticed by most residents. We replaced three
Patrol vehicles with ones that look pretty much the same.
So, 2014 has been somewhat of an inside-out renewal of
your Security Patrol. e objective of the changes has been
to make it easier and more enjoyable for our 230 volunteers
to do their jobs, i.e. internal improvement for external effectiveness. My year as chief, leading this group of friends and
