current Issue - Church of Christ

For the Week of 21st December 2014
Dear Section Leaders,
It is time again this
morning at 9:30am for
the congregation to learn
new songs and to singing
the parts in harmony.
We want to develop this
love for singing from the
very young to the mature.
Dear Brothers and Sisters of Pasir Panjang
Church of Christ,
New songs taught to the congregation will ensure good
I wanted to write this letter to thank you for the last 6
years of being a member here at PPCOC. You have
welcomed us with open arms. From the first day when
brother Henry and sister Nat took me to lunch to welcome me to PP, to the great fellowship lunches with
Beng Chuan, CC and Li Chhoan. The CNY Family visits
including the Ang Pows which my kids were so excited
to receive. To your support when I lost loved ones
back home. For your advice when I needed to make
difficult career choices. And for all of your prayers for
the safety of me and my family, I thank you.
You have truly been a beacon of light helping me and
my children grow in our faith. My daughter has grown
into a young lady, my son has grown from a baby into
a young boy and my spiritual growth has increased
10-fold. My children know that they belong to God and
are Christ’s children as this is because of the zeal and
love you have in teaching the word of God. I have
learned so much by first attending bible classes and
later teaching the young adults. Your children are so
special and blessed. Not that many places have I been
where I have seen so many young adults committed to
the cause of Christ and I believe that PP is in great
shape to have future leaders in the Church as well as
youth that will help Singapore continue to be one of
the best countries in the world to raise a family. One
of the most difficult decisions in me moving is to leave
such a special and wonderful Church home. But I know
I have a place that I will be welcome whenever I come
back to Singapore.
support in the singing during worship.
We are very privileged to have a small pool of section
leaders who are capable and available to train the
congregation. May the good Lord bless you for your
efforts.
We look forward to more musically trained brethren
who can contribute to this effort. Do encourage more
youths to attend the Quarterly Singing.
In September, the Tenor section had only 5 attending.
The other sections are well attended. Song Leaders
are encouraged to use a pitch pipe or phone to pitch
the song.
Frequently the songs are pitched much too low for the
Alto and Bass thus affecting the quality of singing.
Increase your repertoire of songs so that you can lead
a wide range of songs. It is refreshing.
Thank you
Daniel Ng

First Hand Grace –
Introducing Serene
and Teck Su
Serene Tham and Tan Teck Su describe their
journey through life together as one huge
roller-coaster ride with its ups and downs. Like King
Solomon, the conclusion they draw from their life
experiences is the transitory nature of life itself and
that fearing God by keeping his commandments gives
life meaning. Now in their fifties, they “have seen all
the things that are done under the sun; all of them
are meaningless, a chasing after the wind”.
As students they took the same Architectural Drafting
course at the Singapore Polytechnic but only met as
colleagues later, in a local architect firm. She is now
in the IT industry. They have 2 daughters - Sandy and
Shona, and a son, Andrew. All the children are Christians, having attended church from an early age.
Sandy, 26, has just graduated from Nanyang
Polytechnic and now works as a Dental Hygiene Therapist. She loves dogs and owns two mongrels, Riley
and Socks.
Shona, 23, studied Clean Energy at Singapore
Polytechnic. She works in logistics for a global home
appliance company. She is a car enthusiast and her
knowledge of automobiles goes far beyond make and
model.
The youngest child, Andrew, 18, is pursuing a Marine
Offshore Technology course in Ngee Ann
Polytechnic. He enjoys spending time with friends and
computer games. He is also a qualified life guard.
When asked about his first encounter with the Christian
faith, Teck Su recalls that he was invited to attend
church at an early age by a neighbour but nothing
came out of that because of objections from his
grandmother. In polytechnic he met David Yee, a
classmate who was active in the campus ministry. David
taught him the plan of salvation and it had impressed
him that everything David taught came straight from
the Bible. Teck Su just could not wait to lend obedience
to the good news and was baptised that very night at
the church of Christ, then meeting at Tanglin Halt.
At the height of the Asian financial crisis, Teck Su was
at the lowest ebb in his life. He was unemployed for 4
years and in financial difficulty. To make ends meet he
took on small home renovation jobs but not all were
profitable because some people took advantage of his
kindness. He is thankful for church members like Beng
Chuan, Yoke Choi and Moy Chee who offered
him home improvement jobs. Most of all, he is thankful for Serene who shouldered most of the burden
during this time of need.
In 2000 Teck Su secured a stable job with a public
sector company and things began to turn around. Teck
Su and Serene admit that it was through God’s grace
that they survived this difficult period and that it
strengthened their relationship with each other, and
their faith in God .
Serene’s sister first planted the Gospel seed in her
young mind by telling her about the Good News which
set her in the search for God. She accepted an invitation
from a classmate to attend a church in Katong, and
remained there for many years. She admits that she
was very comfortable just blending in and keeping a
low profile until she went forward to respond to the
invitation call to be baptised. She began to grow in
faith when she joined a cell group and had Bible studies
together. It was after she married Teck Su in 1986
that they worshipped together at PP.
The Tans enjoy travelling. Teck Su enjoys deep sea
fishing and has been on many fishing trips to the east
coast of Malaysia with church members. Perth,
Australia is another place the whole family love to visit.
Teck Su’s sister Cecilia and brother-in-law Tong Kee
were members of the PP church before they migrated
and now live there.
Teck Su is active serving in worship and attends
Awareness meetings regularly. Serene enjoys
fellowship, encouragement and support from her care
team and helps out in the Cradle Roll. Both went on a
mission trip to Tuao in the Philippines.
Serene and Teck Su look up to Lim Li Mei for her care
and sensitivity to their needs in times of trouble and
Belinda Yam, for her concern during the birth of Sandy.
Although she did not know Belinda very well at that
time, their long talks in the hospital created a special
bond.
After having gone through many crises and emerging
triumphant and stronger, this couple believes in positive
thinking because they know that God is always looking
out for their family, and they have felt his hand at work
in their lives.
