Photo: Paul McGovern Children at ‘St Vincent’s’ for 100 years The annual Christmas party at MercyCare’s early learning centre in Wembley coincided with the 100th birthday of the building that houses it. The result was a centenary party like no other. The centre began life as the St Vincent’s Foundling Home in 1914 and was run by the Sisters of Mercy until 1971, when it became a modern children’s day care centre. A mini-museum on the verandah displayed historic photos as well as antique prams, cots and bottles used at the former orphanage. Staff and children dressed like the Sisters and children of 100 years ago. MercyCare chief executive officer Chris Hall said: “The young children who are cared for at our Early Learning Centre every day might not realise it, but they’re part of the very special history at St Vincent’s,” he said. “The centenary of St Vincent’s is as much a chance for celebrations as it is an opportunity to get a glimpse into what everyday life ‘Keep Subi’s wealth in Subi’ • From page 3 “But all it does is make for bad blood and what you have to do, like any family relationship, is treat each other with respect.” Mr Tindale said Subiaco owned land and property valued at more than $241million and had only about $7million debt. “From my point of view, it’s a damn sight better going to Cambridge than some outer metropolitan council that has no reserves or assets, or very few assets,” he said. A recent financial study by the Local Government Advisory Board showed Cambridge had a financial sustainability score of 92 and Subiaco had a score of 72. Local Government Minister Tony Simpson said all assets and liabilities of both councils would become the responsibility of the new combined council. Walkies still needed • From page 1 The home’s general manager, Judy Flanagan said she and her workers were worried about Qantas Freight raising its rates for animal transport. “Corgi-cross Leroy and staffy-cross Shae were saved from death row in Broome and were flown down last Tuesday night,” Judy said. “It cost about $79 for each of them, but the new rate means it will be about $500 each.” The ability to fly animals out of the NorthWest has been an integral part of the work of the group, Saving Animals from Euthanasia since its inception in 2003. SAFE founder Sue Hedley said Qantas Freight’s decision would result in the deaths of thousands of animals. “SAFE rescues hundreds of animals from Newman, Tom Price, Port Hedland, Karratha, Broome, and Kununurra and flies them to new homes in Perth and throughout the country, but this is now impossible because of Qantas’s decision to increase freight charges so dramatically,” Sue said. might have been like for children living at the orphanage in the olden days.” The centre provides day care to 138 children up to five years. Councillor Mark Burns said he did not believe Mr Withers would have any problem apologising. “It’s easy to apologise when you’ve won,” he said. “I bloody well did take it personally. How do you take it back? “I say to Mr Withers: Put your apology where the sun doesn’t shine.” Councillor Scott Arbuckle said the advertisements had been offensive, and childish, showed bad manners and lacked any class. “But it does not mean we should be putting our city at risk,” he said. Councillor Leanne Potter said Subiaco had to be at the table and show some goodwill and diplomacy. “Cambridge is not Russia – these are our neighbours,” she said. “But there are plenty of reasons to mistrust them. All of us were insulted. “Mayor Withers should present himself with his council in this chamber. I suggest we go to the table when he minds his manners and retracts.” Councillor Stephanie Stroud said that while the advertisements were extraordinary “let’s not fall down to their level of tit for tat”. Councillor Paul Clements said Subiaco did not have much choice but to engage with Cambridge. He said the joint committee, called a local implementation committee (LIC), could be run in parallel with an appeal Subiaco lodged on Monday against a Supreme Court defeat when it challenged the merger. If Subiaco won the appeal nothing was lost, he said. Mr Tindale said he expected the appeal to be heard in March or April. The members of the Subiaco LIC will be decided next Tuesday. Tired councillors adjourned last Tuesday’s meeting, which started at 5.30pm and ended 15 minutes before midnight. Trader David Maxwell said: “It will be great to see life and colour and vigour in our main street again. “It could change the dynamic that the current offer is not achieving.” Opposition came from Greg Lynch, who manages the Subi Farmers’ Market at Subiaco Primary School, and objected to the competition. He said the street market was on too large a scale and would attack the $30,000 contribution the farmers’ market made to the Subiaco P&C. Rokeby Road, he said, needed rejuvenation but “it will destroy what we have worked very hard for”. The council debated whether Venn should come back with more detailed plans, but voted to delegate the details to its CEO to speed up the process. With Venn, the council staff will also investigate approvals from the government for the road closure, public transport diversions and emergency services. The council approved a sixyear term for the markets. Councillors said ratepayers would save money because money now spent on promoting the CBD would be replaced by private funds. Mr Briers said Rokeby Road would become a famous destination like the Rocks markets in Sydney and the Salamanca markets in Hobart. “Rokeby Road is a beautiful street with a great aspect,” he said. The Venn group, which has an office in central Rokeby Road, will employ five full-time people to source stallholders in WA and other states, and organising setting up the stalls on Friday afternoons and dismantling them on Sunday nights. There will be 22 casual employees. Collier coy on new school • From page 3 “Colin Barnett created this problem. The financial mess he has created means it’s highly unlikely he’ll be able to fix it any time soon. “Now, all he’s offering is a band aid solution to the needs of local parents.” Mr Barnett told the POST this week: “The decisions had community support.” “Shenton College has become an outstanding success and is a sought-after school. “The school population at Shenton College and Churchlands has grown. “A lot of people are coming into the area because of the quality of the schools and they are now an excellent alternative to private schools. That was not anticipated. “City Beach had very low numbers but at the time, my preference was that if it closed, we should hold on to the land for future use. “Liz Constable – who was the member for Floreat – argued to convince me to keep that school open. It was closed in 2005 – under the Labor Government.” Mr Collier made his comments during a visit to Shenton College, where he opened a new $19million building. Later, at Churchlands Senior High School he announced a $49million expansion to cope with growing numbers. He said the school needed to cater for an extra 500 students from 2018. Year 7 students are transferring from primary schools to high schools in February, with 350 Year 7 students joining Shenton next year. Both schools are in high demand because of their records for excellence postnewspapers.com.au They have to enforce their residential zone boundaries strictly, with Shenton closing its books on outside enrolments. Mr Collier said the expansion at Churchlands would include nine classrooms, a science block with 10 laboratories, and a manual arts block including workshops for woodwork, metal and jewellery/robotics. It has already had nine classrooms, two science laboratories, visual and performing arts studios, a food room and an IT laboratory built to cope with the Year 7s’ move. A Shenton manager said the demountable classrooms were in no way inferior to the main classrooms. They were as well equipped with facilities such as IT and other essentials, plus the newly-recruited teachers were “outstanding”. Everybody reads the POST!
