Mexico: Fantastic Identity provides a unique platform from which to embark on a
journey through the various art movements that were important in Mexico during the
20th Century. The exhibition presents masterpieces from landmark moments in modern
Mexican art, including a Diego Rivera cubist work completed during his stay in Europe,
a significant assemblage created by muralists José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro
Siqueiros, and Frida Kahlo’s 1933 painting My Dress Hangs There.
In a video and sound installation, Clarissa Tossin compares two Ford Motor Company
towns: Belterra, a rubber plantation village in the Amazon Forest, and Alberta, a sawmill
town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Built concurrently in 1935, each town provided,
respectively, rubber and wood for the manufacturing of the Model T in the United States.
The installation establishes a sense of place, showing how specific cultural characteristics
invaded and changed these formerly equivalent, pre-planned towns.
Other highlights include work by José Luis Cuevas from the midcentury La Ruptura
movement, Surrealist-inspired work of British émigré Leonora Carrington, and the
contemporary photography of Graciela Iturbide.

creative methods used by migrants to move across borders.
He will also present artwork created by artists who address
themes of mobility and innovation, ideas central to the work
of Esterio Segura.
Leal holds an MA in history from CSU, Northridge and is
currently pursuing a doctorate in history at UC San Diego. He
researches topics in the history of ethnic Mexicans in the U.S.
from a transnational historical perspective.
