O Scrum All Ye Faithful
The Pythons, Walla Rugby and friends celebrated their Christmas party on Saturday. Club President Allan ‘Westy’ Wyburn
is pleased with how the event went, “It was
great to see the Junior Rugby turn up,” he
said “I’d like to thank all the Sponsors for the
year and also say thanks to Graham Rice and
Rob Morris for all the hard work they’ve put
in.” Father Christmas made a quick appearance to hand out lolly bags and luckily wore
joggers instead of boots so he could run and
visit all the other children in Canowindra.
Coach Adam Nash was awarded a thank you
gift engraved with an angry looking python
from team Captain Daniel Bowd. When asked
whether he will continue in the position next
year Adam said, “I haven’t decided yet!”
Allan Wyburn reflected on the year, “We’ve
had a good year, congratulations to all the
boys. It’s the players themselves that keep
this club going, the sponsor money only
covers jumpers and insurance. The players
carry the Club. We know it’s Christmas and
no one’s thinking about rugby but give the
season next year a thought,” he said. When
asked if he will continue as President, Westy
replied “The AGM is in early February so if
someone puts their hand up they can have
it, if not I’ll keep going.” There will be more
information at a later date about training
sessions, Mark Brown is encouraging any
potential new players to make themselves
known, “We’re always looking for new players and are trying to make the Club a more
family friendly environment” he said.

Hi Editor,
Since the last update in the Phoenix we left
Corrigin and drove 300 kls across to Norseman on a really great red dirt road as good
as any expressway, shared with huge mine
road trains. In contrast further on was Australia’s longest straight stretch of road, 146
kms between Balladonia and Culgara. On
through the South Australian border staying
couple days on the coast overlooking Great
Australian Bight. We travelled on through
the Nullabour Plains to Ceduna a nice town
by the sea. Had a quick look through Iron
Knob where they mine iron ore which goes
down to Whyalla for mostly shipping overseas. Next came Cobar, Wilcannia, Nyngan,
Narromine onto home. These last few towns
were interesting to look around but all roads
between towns were very rough not good
when shared with road trains. In summing
up it has been a whirlwind trip of a lifetime
and we have earmarked some great places
to visit for longer periods in the future. It
has opened our eyes to how big this country is and to what we have on our doorstep.
Debbie and I would like to thank the Phoenix staff for their interest and in keeping
the readers abreast of our travels and to the
readers themselves.
Kind regards
Allan and Debbie Symons

You could have put a more positive spin on
the Chrissy Party crowd! There may be someone who people actually like to kiss; there
may be one who can actually sing in tune and

Preschool Good At
Giving
Canowindra Preschool have been collecting
donations over the past three weeks for their
Christmas Giving Tree. This incentive was for
the children to learn about giving to those
less fortunate and to help locals feeling the
pinch this December.
On Friday 12th December, Steve Golfin
from Star FM Orange came over to collect
the items. He was extremely happy and overwhelmed by everything the Canowindra Preschool families had donated. Steve took the
presents back to the Star FM Office where
the collection point is before they were donated to the Salvation Army.
Combining this with the Preschool Graduation night last Wednesday at the Services
Club makes for a fantastic end to the year.
The staff at the Preschool look forward to
beginning 2015 with their new director, Liz
Frances and will see the children on their first
day back on Thursday 29th January 2015.

Canowindra Public School PresentationA great presso day was held on Tuesday for
the Public School students, staff and parents. Lots of awards were handed out ranging from academic to PBL (positive behaviour
learning), plus sponsored awards for stage 2
and 3 students. The school band played as
an introduction to the ceremony and the P&C
gave their end of year report. Two teachers
were also officially acknowledged for their
service to the school, Principal Eric Toole and
Kindergarten teacher Yvonne Berry. “It was a
great event, lots of people came and community members handed out awards. The whole
school sang ‘You Can Count On Me’ by Bruno
Mars, which was lovely” said Assistant Principal Sharon Hawker.
NBN Ready For Connection- Residents of
Canowindra can now switch to the National
Broadband Network, which has recently
gone live across 42 rural and regional communities. Cabonne Mayor Michael Hayes

Imagine a world ruled by fish! At the Age

February 2014 in the foyer of the Age Of
Fishes Museum Canowindra. Entry to the exhibition is Free of Charge.
School Holiday Activities
As well as our world class fossil displays and
renowned retail collection, a mystery of epic
proportions is unfolding at the Age of Fishes
Museum these school holidays. 360 million
years ago in a fishy town named Mudhole
Springs (Canowindra) a puzzling mystery
took place. A precious and very rare gemstone has gone missing, follow the clues and
find out who was responsible for this crime.
If you manage to solve the crime you will take
home your own precious gemstone as a reward! Each participating child from 5 ears to
15 years old will be given a llsit of suspects
with their museum entry and can cross them
off as they’re eliminated by following the
clues hidden around the museum.
What happened?
Mudhole springs is a thriving Devonian community, all of the action takes place 360 million years ago when fish ruled the earth. Our
hero Ossi the Grossi (Canowindra grossi) is
new in town and after a night out at “Jimmy’s

has gone missing. We need junior detectives
to follow the clues and find the secrets, can

CATCH of the week

Hark! The Moyne Carollers Sing!
Generations of families all came together
on Sunday at Moyne Aged Care for a night
of singing and dancing. Greg Saunders from
Salvation Army travelled from Orange to host
the evening, which included a range of performances. The Alikinetic dance troupes got
everyone feeling festive with a few Christmas
inspired routines and outfits. Teacher Ali was
happy so many of her dance students turned
up for the show, ‘ I appreciate the efforts of
parents and children to get there” she said.
The Lions Club were also in attendance and
put on a BBQ and free soft drinks for the kids.
“We were really pleased with how everything went, it was good night and it was great
to get the community out here at Christmas
time to share moments with their family,”
says Amber Meurs, staff member at Moyne.
“The residents absolutely loved it so that
makes it all worthwhile!” Alison Rowe, a
resident at Moyne, wrote a Christmas poem
which was read by the Chaplain of Moyne.
‘She really enjoys writing poems and has
written quite a few over the years’ says Amber. Mr. Saunders ensured everything ran
smoothly adding little jokes in the intervals
to keep everyone smiling. After the reading
Moyne Choir sang ‘Oh Come O Ye Faithful’
and ‘Little Drummer Boy’ with the help of
everyone who attended tapping feet and
clapping. And seen as it’s nearly Christmas,
a sneaky visit from Santa was in order. As a
truck pulled up slowly round the side of the
car park and the man sat on the back came
into view, children in attendance let out
screeches of excitement, especially Ruby
Jackson who yelled “Santa’s here!” The Father of Christmas arrived on a chair covered
with a knitted rug and (with a little help from
Roy White and his ladder) managed to get
down from the truck and deliver presents to
children and residents.

St Eddie’s Tell Story Of The Nativity
St Edward’s Primary School celebrated the
end of 2014 on Monday night. The evening began with a Graduation Thanksgiving Mass for
the year six students at 6 o’clock. Afterwards
the families had picnic dinners on the grass
in the playground before settling down to
enjoy the Christmas play based on the story
of the Nativity in which Cooper Breen played
Joseph and Jolene D’Anastasi played Mary.
Parent, Kelly Breen, was impressed with how
the evening went, “I think they put on a really
good show, a lot of practise and effort went
in and it showed. The kids had a good time
and the parents enjoyed watching” she said.
Families that are leaving the school were acknowledged followed by a presentation to the
Kindergarten children on successfully completing their first year of big school. Children
from years 1 to 6 were recognised and presented with achievement awards ranging from
key learning areas to effort, application and
improvement. The current school leadership
group presented their badges to next year’s
leadership group. The new leaders for 2015
include School Captains Maisie Harrison and
Patrick Hickman, Sports Captains Sammi
Durkin, Gabby Clements and Lydia Coady,
Library Monitor Callum James and Year 6
Leaders Katherine D’Anastasi, Kathleen Pace
and Chloe Bellach. Members of the community also presented children with Major Community Awards with Georgie Fisher winning
the special St Edward’s Fellowship Award in
memory of Carmen Simpson. Principal Ken
McNamara enjoyed the evening and is looking forward to the year ahead, “It was a fantastic night for our school community. I’d like
to thank the students for a wonderful year,
the teachers for their dedication to the parents for their support towards the school. We
look forward to seeing you in 2015!”

Merry Christmas and some exciting news.
When it comes to house insurance most
people only ever cover the basics eg fire, wind
& lightning. However the premium insurers
also offer extensions in cover which will pick
up accidental damage, theft and even loss
anywhere in Australia and often overseas.
With the festive season upon us and people
travelling far and wide these extensions can
often pay dividends and generally not cost a
lot more. When shopping your insurance you
need to look for the best product / price as
you may save $100 but be left with a cover
that doesn’t really protect you.
Thanks to your over whelming support I
would like to announce that Morgan Chamberlain will open in Canowindra every Thursday 9 – 5 within the Garden Montgomerie
office. I feel it is now time to set up an office
on a permanent basis and give back to the
community which has supported me from
the beginning.
Finally Merry Christmas and a happy new
year.

Deck the Halls
Oh Christmas tree oh Christmas
tree, how festive is your tinsel!
Tinsel is that slightly spiky, sparkly stuff that
we like to wrap round a tree we chop down
and put in our lounges for one month of the
year. But why do we do it? Here are some
facts about the origins of tinsel and a little
story about why we may use it…
• A decorative garland, it was invented in
1610 in Nuremburg, Germany and was originally made of shredded silver, although because silver is easily tarnished it was quickly
substituted to other metals.
• The word tinsel is said to be derived from
the Old French word ‘estincele’ which means
sparkle.
• France was the world leader in tinsel
manufacture up until World War I (those
Frenchies really love their tinsel) but production was stopped due to a wartime demand
for copper.
• In the super sparkly decade of the 1950’s,
tinsel was so popular it was used more that
Christmas lights, which was wise considering
that flammable aluminium Christmas trees
were all the rage.
• During all this time lead foil was the most
popular material for tinsel manufacture, although it was phased out in the 60’s due to
concern about children getting lead poisoning. Thus, in the interest of festive health,
all lead tinsel production was voluntarily
stopped after the 1st January, 1972.
Anyone who knows the story of the Nativity
should also be familiar with this little gem, The
Legend Of The Spider’s Web. Even though I’m
not religious, I heard this as a child and have
never forgotten it.
To save their baby Mary and Joseph hid in
a cave. A spider heard the couple whispering about the soldiers and realised the baby
was in danger. The spider began to weave
lots of strands over the cave front to create
a giant web. By morning the soldiers finally
arrived and saw the huge web across the
cave’s mouth. ‘Jesus can’t be hiding in here’
said one, looking at the strands that sparkled
with condensation in the morning sunshine.
The soldier’s moved on and Jesus was saved
by the hard-working little spider. So, if you
believe the tale, we hang tinsel on our tree to
remind us of the spider’s selfless act in saving the family by weaving his web through the
night.
Whichever yarn you prefer, tinsel is a beautiful garland that inspires the warm, fuzzy
feeling of Christmas. Just make sure the cat
doesn’t eat it!

A Christmas Wish For Good Mental Health
Beyondblue Chairman The Hon. Jeff Kennett
has written his Christmas wish-list, outlining
how all Australians can promote good mental
health over the festive season. “This is a wonderful time of year, but it can be lonely and
stressful for some people, potentially triggering symptoms of depression and anxiety” he
said. “This list contains simple advice, good
mental health is an amazing gift and it’s
something we should cherish.”
Be financially responsible
Christmas presents, lunch, booze, decorations and all those little extras- the list just
goes on and on this time of year. Try not to
overspend, remember what your loved ones
really want at Christmas is to spend time
with you.
Don’t discriminate
Christmas functions see people of all walks
of life gather together. Discrimination about
gender, religion, ethnicity etc is damaging
and never acceptable, so don’t ruin someone’s holidays by being a bigot.
Reach out for support
For some people, Christmas is the saddest
time of year as they remember loved ones
now lost. If you’re feeling lonely, or need

Don’t fight with your relatives
So what if Aunt Muriel ate the last of the
mince pies or Uncle Dave’s snoring on the
lounge again? Keep family tensions in check
over Christmas. If you have an issue, try to
raise it before or after the event and in private wherever possible
Create a mentally healthy workplace
If your business is open over the holidays
it can be the busiest time of year. Mentally
healthy employees are happier and more
productive, so look after them. Similarly, if
your job makes you unhappy, it’s time to
reflect on whether to search elsewhere for
work in 2015.
Most importantly-have fun!
What’s the point of getting together with
family and friends if you can’t have a laugh?
Eat, drink and be merry, just try and be
mindful of others.

Elvis Please
The 2015 Parkes Elvis Festival is set to be
bigger than ever with an estimated 18,000
people due to flock to the town! This time

80th birthday with a ‘Roustabout’ carnival
theme to commemorate this special milestone. Held over five days from Wednesday
7th to Sunday 11th January 2015, the 23rd
annual Parkes Elvis Festival features a rockin’
program of over 150 shows and events.
Internationally acclaimed Elvis Tribute Artist Justin Shandor stars in the 2015 ClubsNSW Keno Feature Concert Series. US-born

birthday, will be a gala event fit for the King,
featuring a three-course dinner and show
starring Damian Mullin, the legendary Mark
Andrew and Elvis aficionado Greg Page.
The NRMA Cooke Park Main Stage will
be the centre of the action with four days
of non-stop free entertainment and events.
From Thursday to Sunday, don’t miss the

rock’n’roll dancing, and junior and senior
Elvis and Priscilla look-a-likes and sound-alikes. There will be free night-time events
aswell, with an outdoor screening of Roustabout on Thursday night and free Concerts in
the Park on Friday and Saturday nights.
Parkes Elvis Festival is proud to present
a brand-new precinct for 2015, The NRMA

Website Launch For Sally
For a number of years my business has needed a logo redesign and a
website that showcased my works but this was delayed due to wishing to find the right web developer. I was thrilled when Michael Yates
was highly recommended to me. Michael works within the team of
‘Five hours West’ alongside Claire Myers & his wife Denise, a talented
photographer who has shot many of the images on my site. Therefore, after working in partnership with them, I’m excited to announce
the launch of my website! It is a platform for works I’ve designed in
Canowindra and surrounds over the last ten years and a few Sydney
projects I also designed. I’m pleased that Sally Bourne Landscapes,
which has been in operation for over twenty years, has moved into
online territory and look forward to hearing customer feedback about
the website. If you’re ready to make the first step towards a magnificent landscape go to www.sallybournelandscapes.com.au and get in
contact.

How long have you lived in Canowindra?
My whole life except when I lived in Cronulla
for a couple of stints.
Where do you work? Eugowra Hospital as
a registered nurse and a builder for Woolworths at Cowra, Bathurst, Orange, Parkes
and Forbes.
What got you into nursing? I wanted to buy
a Harley and travel around Australia and you
can get a job in any town if you’re a nurse.
When you’ve got any spare time, how do
you like to spend it? I like to teach my boys
Lachlan and Alex, train Canowindra Little
Athletics and I train the Junior Pythons. I also
enjoy doing weights and going to Swimming
Club, hunting and horse-riding.
Worst habit? Swearing, it’s good for building
no good for nursing!
If you won the lotto what would you
spend it on? I would buy house at Arrawarra
right by the beach and go surfing, and then
take my wife to Italy.
Favourite motorbike? Harley Davidson
Fatboy because it’s big, loud and powerful
Who would you like to have dinner with?
My wife, Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela
and Roger Federer

COMPUTER Bytes
Christmastime, remembering our Saviour
and Lord, family, food, and presents! Over
many years of computer servicing I have
seen all manner of interesting things happen
to computers between Christmas and New
Year. PC’s don’t drink so don’t offer them any
as they don’t recover too well. Never eat or
drink around that shiny new device and if an
accident happens, follow these simple steps:
turn the power off, turn upside down to allow
liquids to drain away, let them dry out, consult advice as soon as practical. With new
PC’s or Macs, don’t ignore the option to create backups or recovery sets, as in the event
of a major failure or system issue it’s too late
to create a recovery set after the event. I will
be reopen on 2nd January and be available
on 23rd-24th and 28th December. Have a
blessed and safe Christmas and New Year!
Cheers

Mckenzie Lazarou singing Please Dont Say You Love Me
The weeks of waiting are finally over for the
class of 2014 and their teachers with the release this Wednesday of the Higher School
Certificate results and Merit List for Distinguisher Achievers!
The results were received with a range of
emotions for the twenty seven students from

twenty four courses. The best performances for the school were recorded in Design
and Technology, Business Studies, Industrial Technology and Music, where students
achieved a total of 7 band 6’s and 12 band
5’s. Biology, Standard English and Agriculture results were also worthy of mention.
Overall the results were solid and complimented the student’s previous success
in being recognised with major awards at
the school’s Annual Presentation Night and
gaining early entry to a range of universities.
Across all subjects many of the students
achieved their personal best and are to be
congratulated for their commitment and
hard work. On an individual level four students, who were previously acknowledged
for the quality of their major projects through
nomination for InTech 2015 and DesignTech

as distinguished achievers – Tim Middleton
for Design and Technology, Business Studies
and Industrial Technology; Cormac Lamond

for their success and achievement of the
rewards of their study and preparation. For
those intending to attend university the
school is looking forward to now hearing of
their success with gaining the required University Admissions Index (UAI.) Canowindra
High also enjoyed a fantastic Presentation
Night on Tuesday with a range of students
being recognised and awarded for their talents, including Mckenzie Lazarou who sang
‘Please Don’t Say You Love Me’ by Gabrielle
Aplin. Congratulations Canowindra High on a
fantastic year!

showed Aussie Hotel that it was going to be
hard to score runs, bowling a maiden in his
first and second overs. Pete Guthrie backed
him up, grabbing two wickets in his second
over, with a run out from young gun Tim Starr
. Guthrie then took another two wickets.
With another run out in between, Aussie Hotel were now 6-23, and then in Guthrie’s final over he got another wicket . Aussie Hotel
scraped together another 27 runs before being bowled out in the 15th over for 55. Young
Tim Starr bowled very well and was unlucky
not to get a wicket . Canowindra’s next game
is against Bowling Club on the 20th.

Swimming Club Report
A cool easterly provided little in the way of
wind assistance and a lot of wind chill by the
end of the night. Before this, 48 swimmers
were culled down to 6, through heats and
semis, for the Spoon final. With 11 seconds
separating the slowest from the fastest it
was a quick lap of freestyle. Michael Coady
triumphed in lane 3 as he swam a personal
best 21 seconds to take home the coveted
Spoon. The relay went to lane 4 as Lillian
Harrison, Connor Munroe, Lucas Ellis, Caitlin
Brand, Louis O’Dea, Patrick Hickman, Dominic Smyth and Finbar Smyth took home the
pennants. Special mention goes the Amara
Flannery who swam the first and last legs
of the relay for lane 3 as two brothers went
home after the relay was finalised and before
it was swum. This is the last week of swimming club for 2014 it resumes on Friday 9th
January 2015.
