Carole and I were in Chickmagnet, our ’68 MGB roadster, backtracking eastward from Lebanon, Missouri, along Route 66. We had just checked in to the Munger Moss Motel – a classic 1960’s establishment, complete with a pink bathroom and pink satin bedspreads. It was too early to sit around the motel, so we decided to take the top down and cruise back for about 30 minutes to Mr. C’s Route Post, a 1960’s outlet we had seen on the way in. We arrived at Mr. C’s just after 5:00 pm only to find it closed, so we turned around and headed back, enjoying the sunset. After about 20 minutes, I looked down at the gauges and noticed the temperature needle pointing skywards, climbing off the scale! I immediately slapped the gearshift into neutral and coasted to the side of the road. When I popped the bonnet, I was greeted with what I can only imagine a KFC fryer to smell like at the end of a shift - the smell of overheated oil. Since embarking on long distance trips in our MGs (and we have done quite a few), I have harboured a nightmare of either having the carbon clutch release bearing give out or the water pump packing in. I carry a spare roller clutch bearing, but Within 5 minutes of popping the bonnet, two cars stopped and offered assistance. But I decided to limp back to Lebanon and try to find a water pump. The Cohen 1968 MGB roadster at the classic 1960’s Route 66 motel in Lebanon, Missouri The Munger Moss Hotel, complete with satin bedspreads 1 12 | Classical Gas Back at the motel, I hauled out my tools. But what should I do? Take out the pump and examine it? Find someone who could supply a new pump? Then my eyes alighted on the most useful tool in the box: the NAMGBR1 Mutual Aid Directory. This directory lists members who offer assistance to travelling MG enthusiasts. So I looked up under “Missouri” and found a listing for John Lawson in Springfield, which is located 50 miles away, along our route. It was about 6:30 pm when I phoned John, who told me that right under his name was a listing for Mother’s Automotive Services, in Springfield, and owned by Dan Craig. Of course, being after hours, Mothers was closed, but John gave me Dan’s home phone number. When I called, Dan told me that he did not have a spare water pump in stock, NAMGBR – North American MGB Register October | December 2014 C SPANNER Note: This is not a technical article but suggested that I call AAA and arrange to have Chickmagnet trailered to his shop. In the meantime, he offered to poll all the members of the local MG Club and see if anyone had a spare. but impressive service garage obviously well patronized by classic car owners, a few of whom were sitting around. They showed great interest in Chickmagnet. At 8:00 pm I phoned Dan back and told him that I had arranged for the AAA truck to pick up the car between 10:00 am and 12:00 noon the next day. Dan reported that he had sourced a new water pump on one of the Club member’s shelves, and it would be in the shop when we got there. Shortly after our arrival John arrived to meet us and see that we were taken care of. Dan checked out the problem and identified it as a stuck thermostat. Drat! I should have known better. After replacing it Dan and I headed out on a test drive. The countryside around Springfield is made for these cars - winding country roads, no traffic and glorious scenery. At 9:00 am next morning, the AAA truck arrived and loaded Chickmagnet and we climbed into the cab. As we rolled along the highway towards Springfield, the driver, a really pleasant guy, regaled us with stories of how he and his pals used to travel Route 66. He showed us the places where they had to cross the I-44 where there were no overpasses. At least, with his broad Missouri accent, that is what I think he was telling us. Dan greeted us on our arrival at Mothers, a small November | December 2014 Loading the sick “Chickmagnet” for her journey to Mother’s Automotive Services in Springfield, Missouri The countryside around Springfield is made for these cars - winding country roads, no traffic and glorious scenery. Back at Mothers, Carole and I said our farewells and left with fond memories of the great people we met through this experience. Mr. C’s Route Post with “the largest selection of Route 66 merchandise in the Ozarks” The NAMGBR Mutual Aid Directory is not really a magic spanner, but, for MGB owners, more like American Express - “Never Leave Home Without It”. ■ Classical Gas | 13 A L IFE IN A BIN A Man’s Fifty-On Note that Part I was published in the September October Classical Gas Joe T Lord’s choice of the new Healey 100 as the main BMC he fifties and sixties were golden years of sports car significantly delayed replacement for the change for MG, which went from a niche car aging T series MG. In fact, the Austin-Healey 100 was builder to makers of the most popular sports eventually assembled at Abingdon! One virtue of the cars of their time. The end of the thirties had been obsolete T series was cheap body tooling. With wood difficult for all industry and saw major changes at the used for floors and framing, the steel and aluminium Abingdon works. William Morris had begun to sell off his panelling was small in size and most of it required a shares in MG to Morris Motors and withdraw somewhat from the motor empire he had founded and controlled. Between 1933 and 1936 the running of the empire increasingly became the responsibility of Leonard Lord. The forceful autocrat made few friends and has been described as a foulmouthed dictator. With MG under his scrutiny, he made some major changes, not all of them bad. He rationalized operations at Abingdon, the OHC engines were gone and the racing program was abandoned including race car development. All EX 179 in 1954 with a bored out TF engine. this happened after a visit he made to Abingdon on July 1, 1936. Anyone who crossed his path was dismissed, and eventually Morris had enough, and in a disagreement over profit sharing Lord left the Morris group to join Austin. The war put a stop to car building and the Abingdon plant did all sorts of jobs from aeroplane fuselages to overhauling Bren Gun Carriers. In the early fifties Morris merged with Austin to form the British Motor Corporation, with the Austin people appearing to have the upper hand. That put Leonard Lord back in charge, with EX 179 in 1956 with the 1485 cc twin cam engine. his dislike for Abingdon remaining Syd Enever is 3rd from the left. unchanged. John Thornley, who with Syd Enever was to produce the MG’s relatively small investment. Lord’s restrictions on the MG success in the fifties and sixties, was fortunately able to budget allowed no major improvements to the T series communicate with Lord. “I must have been one of the which soldiered on with what limited improvements few people who did not get the wrong side of his tongue” Enever could make. he said. Thornley was able to get the MG Drawing Office With the re-opening of the Drawing Office, Syd was able re-opened in 1954, ensuring the survival of the Abingdon to get some serious designing done with Thornley’s plant. 14 | Classical Gas September October | December | October 2014 NGDON P A R T I I : ne Years with MG Carroll support. Prototype EX 172 (UMG 400) was a start, but Syd wanted the driving position lowered. Built in 1952, EX 175 benefitted from a new chassis Thornley referred to as “EX 174 put right”. The new frame was bigger than the TD frame used in EX 174 and the boxed frames were widened out to allow the occupants to sit lower. The two new frames built were also very strong with massive support for the cowl. The car built on one of the frames was in fact a prototype for the MGA, However it was not accepted by Lord. EX 175 was destroyed later in an accident while on loan to a brake manufacturer. To bolster lagging sales of the T series Syd designed EX 179, a new streamlined record breaker, using the spare EX 175 frame. With a TF engine tuned to 85hp unsupercharged at 6,000 rpm, the car set eight endurance records up to153.7 mph in a twelve-hour run at Bonneville in 1954. In 1956 the same car with an unsupercharged 1485cc twin cam engine set sixteen records up to 170 mph. Finally in 1957 with a 948cc unsupercharged engine, it took 25 records up to 143mph in its class. All this may have affected attitudes at Birmingham, the BMC headquarters. John Thornley had received approval for an up-to-date replacement for the TF. Syd Enever knew what was needed and dusted off EX 175. The pressed metal body was more expensive than the TF’s, but the superb frame from 175 provided rigidity unheard of in 1955. Morris Bodies provided the pressed steel and aluminium body components and the frame parts were from John Thompson of Wolverhampton. The front suspension came from the TF and the engine and gearbox were Austin as used in the Magnette. Enever made sure the car looked fast and handled well and it really was the best car in its class when it appeared. Syd and John sweated bricks to keep the price affordable. No outside door or boot handles, no glass door windows - these were the compromises that kept this transition to a new post-war car affordable. Three aluminium pre-production MGAs were built and entered in the 1955 Le Mans race, One crashed with serious injuries to the driver, but the remaining two put in a good showing finishing behind the winning, September||December 2014 November October 2014 MGA Mechanics The MGA experienced Porsche team. This was the year of the terrible crash with many spectators killed. Only twenty of the original sixty cars finished. A new era had begun at Abingdon, with the MGA a well-earned success. John Thornley and Syd Enever had shown that the Abingdon work force knew how to design and build a sports car, supported by the new BMC “B” series engine with its Harry Westlake magic in the cylinder head. This was to become the most successful sports car of its era. n Classical Gas | 15 16 | Classical Gas October | December 2014 2014 Heritage Classic Survey HERITAGE CLASSIC A could choose to remain anonymous. October | December 2014 THE PRESIDENTS’ RUN SEPTEMBER 26 - 28 E ach year the Jaguar and MG Presidents pick a location in BC or Washington for a fall cruise and get together. The 2014 Presidents’ Run was to Harrison Hot Springs where 30 club members joined Jag President Danny Reilly and MG President Derek Critchley for a weekend of fun and camaraderie. The participants ranged in age from 15 to 85 and fourteen cars took part: 5 Jaguars, 5 MGs and 4 Brand X’s. On Friday, Vito & Madelaine Donatiello in the family Mini Cooper led a drive along the twisty backroads around Stave Lake and Mission to the host hotel, the historic Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa. The Donatiellos also led the drive on Saturday to the Rivers Edge Restaurant in Harrison Mills. Saturday night found the group enjoying dinner and dancing in the Harrison Resort’s Copper Room. Not surprisingly, run organizer Marcia Vanwely received a comment from one of the participants – “The Presidents’ Run was a blast!” [Photos by Jag Prez Danny Reilly & his wife Francine (forground), with Lisa Marcia Vanwely unless otherwise indicated.] Holmes and her brother David at the River’s Edge Restaurant Club members arrive at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa Presidents’ Run organizer Marcia Vanwely, with Madelaine Donatiello, enjoying coffee before Vito leads the group on the Saturday drive. [Photo by Marcena Croy] THE SEA TO SKY RALLY SEPTEMBER 20 P erfect weather helped make the 2nd annual Sea to Sky All British Rally a great success. Organized by Greg & Elisabeth Wagorn of Silk Cat Automotive Specialists, the rally had 70 cars, including a large contingent from CXKJR/CCMGC. There was 120 kms of scenic and twisty highway from North Vancouver to Whistler, followed by a display on the Olympic Plaza. Participants received a special event plaque designed by Canadian artist and CXKJR member Charles van Sandwyk. [Photos by Tim Horton] n Above: Jaguars took up a large part of the show field Right: The Rally participants filled the Olympic Plaza at Whistler November | December 2014 Classical Gas | 25 The Last Word Newbys Super Bowl Party 2014 Kruise for Kids Report Join the crowd February 1 from 1:00 pm onwards for the 12th annual Super Bowl Party at the Newby’s in Aldergrove. The event is a potluck, so bring a dish to add to the feast and enjoy the game and the camaraderie. A reminder - it’s not a requirement to like football. There’s also a number of interesting Jaguars and MGs to view in the Newby collection, as well as three double-decker buses and many other British projects in the driveway for the tyre-kickers. There is always a new vehicle or two to see – this year a British Army “Saladin” heavy armoured car. For more information, call Doreen or Ian at 604-856-8477. Doug Gale Octagon Motor Group Open House CXKJR/CCMGC members and their guests are invited to the annual Open House taking place Sunday, February 15 at Octagon Motors located at 1538 Venables, Vancouver. Come and listen to a presentation by Service Technician Syd McNabb as you enjoy coffee and donuts. (Open House times and presentation topic to be announced at a later date.) Note that since Octagon closed their parts service last September, there will not be a sale of parts at the Open House as in previous years. For further information, contact Ed Hunt at [email protected] or 604-253-4145. Kids, Cars & Cops: What Could Go Wrong? Hosted by Nigel and Yoki Matthews, this October 28 Benefit for NASKARZ (Never Again Steal Karz) was a fundraiser for the award-winning program offered to at-risk youth through a partnership involving the Ray-Cam Cooperative Centre, Vancouver Community College’s Transportation Trades Division, and the Vancouver Police Department. $27,000 was raised for the program, which is designed to provide social inclusion of young people from Vancouver’s downtown eastside in automotive, social and educational opportunities. Participants are taught car repair and restoration skills. ICBC has credited NASKARZ as one of the initiatives that led to a 71% multi-year reduction in car thefts in the city. Club members attending the Benefit evening included Vito & Madelaine Donatiello and Jennifer Orum. For further information on the program, see: www.naskarz.com 26 | Classical Gas This was not a record year but it was a good year. About 165 cars showed up in the almost rain on November 2 – YES, we made it through with the top down! Of the 165 cars, 4 were from CXKJR/CCMGC – the Gales, Allan Lawrence, the Harfords and the Carrs. Once again our club collected the most money to donate to the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau. The total donated at the event was $12,556, and with a few late donations still coming in, the total will be about $1000 higher. I would also like to mention the toys that were collected – in excess of 550. The quality of the toys is excellent as Chris Baylis, from the Christmas Bureau, comments each year. Thanks again for your support and we hope to see you there next year. PS. A special thanks to Tonya and Josie Harford for selling raffle tickets at the Convention Centre. Great job ladies! BC Collector Car Appreciation Day The National Association of Automobile Clubs of Canada was responsible for initially arranging for the Collector Car Appreciation Day and Month in Canada. Each year, application must be made to the BC Government to designate the provincial Appreciation Day and this year Keith Jackman, ex-Superintendent of Motor Vehicles and a Lifetime Member of the Specialty Vehicle Association of BC approached Deputy Premier Rich Coleman and facilitated the proclamation of July 12, 2014 as BC’s Collector Car Appreciation Day. As part of the day’s activities, CXKJR member Ric MacDonald organized the Powley Prowl as a joint event of the Morgan Owners’ Group Northwest and CXKJR/CCMGC. The SVABC is proposing that next year’s Collector Car Appreciation Day be July 11, 2015 and Ric is planning the second annual Powley’s Prowl to take place on that same date.
