The Huntington Pioneers Association is a group of people
participating in a variety of activities.
Some of the activities include:
Bridge, snooker, whist, shuffle boarding, wood carving,
art classes, craft classes, outings, movies, volunteer activities, social events and more!
We have regular monthly activities and we invite anyone meeting our membership requirements to join us:
Pot luck supper: last Monday of each month, starts at
5:30pm
Movie Night: 2nd Monday of every month 7pm, silver
collection for popcorn and pop.
Art classes: Every Tuesday 1:30pm-3:30pm, includes:
oil painting, water color, acrylics and sketching.

Pre-school Programs:
Pre-School Dance Class
Your child will discover the joy of dancing in a fun and
creative environment! The course will introduce your
child to the basics of ballet and jazz dance with an emphasis on imagination and creativity. Children will learn
basic steps, positions, terminology and short dance
combinations that will improve coordination and balance.
Ages: 3 to 5 years

Pre-School Learn To Skate Class
Your child will become acclimatized to the ice and the
arena and learn independence on the ice in a fun and

first come/first serve basis as advertised. Children are

fitness level and aid in weight loss.

Holiday safety tips

christmas trees
• Get a freshly cut tree. It stays green longer and is less
of a fire hazard.
• Always test for freshness before buying. A tree with
high moisture content is safer. Very few needles
should fall when the butt of the tree is tapped on
the ground. Needles should bend, not break, and the
stump should be sticky with resin.
• Use a tree stand with a broad base for better balance
and a large water reservoir to immerse the tree butt.
Make sure the base of the tree is always in water.
• Do not set your tree up near a heat source such as a
radiator, television, fireplace or heating duct and do
not block doors or windows.
• Never use lit candles on a tree.
• After the holidays, properly dispose of trees as soon
as possible. The City of Calgary has a Christmas tree
recycling program. For details visit calgary.ca.
Decorations
• Choose flame-retardant or flame resistant and noncombustible decorations.
• If there are young children or pets in your home,
avoid very small decorations.
• Avoid using angel hair (glass wool) together with
spray-on snowflakes. This combination is highly combustible.
• Do not use metallic ornaments. If they make contact
with defective wiring, they become a shock hazard.

• Use CSA (Canadian Standards Association) and/or
ULC (Underwriters Laboratories of Canada) approved
lights.
• Use the proper lights for the environment. Indoor
lights should not be used outdoors because they lack
weatherproof connections. Some outdoor lights burn
too hot for indoor use.
• Inspect lights before use. Check for cracked bulbs and
frayed, broken or exposed wires. Discard faulty bulbs.

• Do not use electric lights on metallic trees. A faulty
system could energize the tree and shock or electrocute anyone who touches it. Illuminate metallic trees
with coloured floodlights placed at a safe distance
from the tree and out of reach.
• Turn off all tree and display lights before retiring for
the night or leaving the house.
• Make sure not to overload an electrical outlet or extension cord.

• Place candles away from combustible materials such
as curtains, paper, furniture, etc.
• A responsible adult should always be present when
candles are lit.
• Keep candles in sturdy holders, on stable surfaces
and away from drafts, children and pets.
• Keep matches and lighters used to light candles in a
safe place, away from children.
• Ensure candles are extinguished when leaving the
room or going to bed.
• Remember: when you go out, blow out.
Fireplaces
• Never burn gift-wrap, boxes, cartons or other packaging in the fireplace. They burn too rapidly and generate far too much heat.
• Do not hang Christmas stockings from the mantel
when the fireplace is in use.
• Always use a screen in front of the fireplace to protect against flying sparks. Fireplace glass can heat to
more than 200 C degrees. Keep children away from
fireplaces to avoid injury.
• Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids to
start a fire.
• Use only seasoned, dried wood.
• Never leave the fire unattended or let it smolder.
• Clean out the ashes regularly but allow them to cool
for 72 hours in a metal container. Store outside, away
from flammable materials.
• Do not use Christmas trees for firewood.
• Have chimneys cleaned annually by a certified technician.

The Centering Pregnancy program, located in The Alex
Family Health Centre (1318 Centre St NE), provides

of nose Hill

Nose Hill is to Calgary what Citadel Hill is to Halifax; Battlefield’s
Park to Quebec City; Mount Royal to Montreal; Stanley Park to
Vancouver; and Beacon Hill Park to Victoria. This is from a brief
presented at City Council in June, 1972 by the Local Council of
Women. It was also shared with each community hall in NW
Calgary which would be affected by the creation of this park.
CURLING
Curling has begun for another season! We had such
wonderful fall weather it was hard to come to the club
in shorts and sandals and then have to change into long
pants and curling shoes. Welcome back to our returning
curlers and also a big welcome to all of our new members.
All of our leagues are well underway and the ice is great!
Some leagues are also still accepting teams and singles,
so please call if you are interested in having some winter
fun curling at your Community Curling Club!

This hill is a dominant feature in Calgary since its southern
slopes can be seen from most locations in the city; providing
a constant reminder to citizens of the prairie landscape surrounding them which has played such as influential role in our
economic and cultural development. The most valuable use
for Nose Hill is to retain it in its present, near-natural state. It
is priceless in crude economic terms. We propose that it be retained in this natural state.
Noel Junior Bonspiel – December 6 – 2014 – Junior Curlers Rock the House! The Noel Spiel is for novice curlers
ages 5 through 17. We have a Little Rocks division – 5
– 8 year olds as well as regular rocks for the older curlers. Come on down to watch and support these young
curlers! They remind us why we love the sport of curling
– because it is fun!
Planning that does not include adequate recognition of the
aesthetic values of the uniqueness of this hill would be incomplete. Nose Hill is a beautiful natural area that certainly enhances our city. If we are to be proud of our surroundings, we must
have prime natural areas preserved, and live with them as well
as the urban sprawl and concrete City Centre.
Men’s Bonspiel – January 8, 9, 10, 11 - 2015 – Our Men’s
curling Bonspiel is a popular event so if you are interested in registering – do it now! We host 32 teams and
the committee does an outstanding job of having a full
weekend of curling, cash prizes and so much more!
Visitors to our city attending the new convention centre will
probably have little opportunity to see the unique landscape
flavour of the prairie surrounding Calgary, except to visit the
natural grassland of Nose Hill or to view it from the Calgary
Tower.
Our Adult Learn to Curl classes were very successful and
we plan to offer them again in the New Year. Junior Curling, Saturdays mornings from 10:00 to 11:30 am will take
ongoing registrations throughout the year. We have had
a couple of sessions this season and the young curlers
are enthusiastic and have tons of fun on and off the ice.
We can now supply on our website, (due to a generous donation by the park conceivers), the complete details of the early
history of how Nose Hill Park was created. Such documents
will be added to our historical timeline, including a paper from
Oct. 1977, on Fish Creek and Nose Hill Parks: A Case Study of
Contrasting Forms of Citizen Lobbying. An understanding of
the strengths and weaknesses of the operational mode of each
group should prove useful for future citizen action groups.
A second draft version of the city’s biodiversity 10-year strategic plan is under review. Keep you posted!

The Government of Alberta is planning to complete
Calgary’s ring road, with construction beginning on
the southwest link in the next two years. To plan for
a complete road network, the right connections between the ring road and the city are necessary. There
are 11 locations where we are designing and, in some
cases, constructing roads that will connect the ring
road to southwest Calgary.

Hills Way – while other projects will improve existing
streets. For example, widening Anderson Road makes
it more attractive to drivers. Well-designed links to the
ring road will keep Calgary moving and will provide a
number of benefits for citizens:

• Improved safety and access by putting the right traffic on the right roads

The Salute to Kids Society would like to announce
that St Henry School has a new Playground!
We had a slight delay due to the early snowstorm in September but we managed to complete the build in early
October. We had over 150 volunteers come out and help
with the four day build. Without these volunteers this
project would not have been so successful. So a Special
Thank You goes to Devon Energy, friends and families of
St Henry School and also the Huntington Hills Community. We even had a special guest, Councillor Sean Chu,
which was greatly appreciated.
The playground will have a few late additions, including
benches in the playground area, and four table sets at
the top of the hill.

Dear Friends:
Addressing the shortage of schools in Alberta is a key aspect
of our government’s mandate for education. In fall 2014, the
Government of Alberta committed $263.2 million in funding, over two years, for school projects across the province.
This includes funding for 12 new starter schools, dozens of
modular classrooms, as well as funding for the planning and
design of 55 new and expanded schools, and for planning
20 modernized schools. It also includes an increase to infrastructure and maintenance funding to help school boards
address their most pressing deferred maintenance needs.
The new school projects and modernizations were selected
through a comprehensive assessment of various factors including school boards’ priorities, health and safety of students
and staff, enrolment projections, current utilization, facility
conditions and capacity for program delivery.
Here in our Calgary-Mackay-Nose Hill constituency, construction is underway on two new schools in the growing community of Evanston. The new Catholic K-9 school and the public
elementary school are both expected to welcome students
starting in 2016.
Moving forward, our government will continue to work closely
with local school boards and stakeholders to explore potential
community partnerships and innovative ways of maximizing
the use of existing and new school space.

Focusing on the future
As we look back on the past year we have much to be
thankful for at the Calgary Board of Education. This
fall we had more than 3,700 new students enrol in our
schools, bringing our total enrolment to 114,472 students. We are proud that we are the dynamic learning
community of choice for students from kindergarten
to adult education.
We are also proud of the results our students are
achieving. In the 2013, 14 provincial achievement
tests and diploma exams, our students continued to
outperform the province in most subjects, particularly at the excellence standard. In addition, our high
school completion rate continues to rise.
In the last year, our students have also made significant contributions to their communities, volunteering thousands of hours and raising funds for local and
global initiatives.
Looking forward to 2015 and beyond, we know we
have more work to do. Education trends are shifting as we continue to support and improve student
learning. These include shifts in how we assess and
report on student learning and how we ensure the
success of our high school students.
Our system has also been very involved in the provincial government’s curriculum redesign initiative,
which is reviewing what K-12 students learn and how
they learn it. As we continue to make these shifts, the
voices of our parents and community will continue to
play an important role.
