Protect Yourself This
Flu Season
It has been recognized for many years
that seniors are at greater risk of
serious complications from the flu
compared with young, healthy adults.
During most seasons, it’s estimated
that 90 percent of seasonal flu-related
deaths and between 50 and 60 percent
of seasonal flu-related hospitalizations
in the United States occur in seniors.
This is because human immune
defenses become weaker with age. So
influenza can be a very serious disease
for people 65 and older.
Actions to Take This Flu Season:
• Get Your Flu Shot
The best way to prevent the flu is
with a flu vaccine. The vaccine
has been updated for this season
and immunity wanes over a year,
so you should get vaccinated this
year even if you were vaccinated
last season. Immunity sets in
about two weeks after
vaccination.
• Practice good health habits
including covering coughs,
washing hands often, and
avoiding people who are sick.
• Seek medical advice quickly if
you develop flu symptoms to
see whether you might need
medical evaluation or treatment
with antiviral drugs. It’s very
important that antiviral drugs
be used early to treat flu in
seniors who are very sick with
flu, and have a greater chance
of getting serious flu
complications.
• Be courteous to your fellow
residents by ordering trays to
your room, avoiding others and
wearing a mask if you must
walk around the general
population.
By following these simple steps, we
can ensure a healthy holiday
season for ourselves and
our neighbors.

The Crossword Craze
Choosing the Right Resolution
The end of the year is near, and with
it comes the perfect opportunity to
score a positive change or two—by
making a New Year’s resolution. It can
be fun and rewarding to set a goal for
the next 12 months, especially if you
keep some of these tips in mind:
Put the “new” in “Happy New Year.”
Experts say setting the same goals year
after year is a mistake. Something fresh
and exciting, such as deciding to try a
new art class, will motivate you more
than a familiar resolution you’ve failed
to keep.
Fine-tune your focus. Some people
create a long list of ways they want to
improve in the new year, then quickly
become overwhelmed and burn out.
Pick one main goal, and be specific—
instead of saying “exercise more” or
“eat healthier,” say “walk for
30 minutes each day” or “eat a serving
of vegetables at every meal.”
Ask for help. Friends and relatives can
support you and keep you accountable
if you share your goals with them, and
they may even ask you to return the
favor. Consider setting a resolution
with others that will be fun to keep,
such as planning a special outing or
get-together once a month.
What’s a nine-letter word for a
popular game that is both entertaining
and educational? It’s “crossword,” a
puzzle where players use given clues to
place words and phrases into sets of
prearranged squares. The familiar
black-and-white grid game made its
debut Dec. 21, 1913.
Arthur Wynne, who worked at the
New York World newspaper, is credited
for inventing the crossword after his
editor asked him to create a new feature
for the Sunday puzzle section. Based on
a game he remembered from his
childhood, Wynne’s puzzle was a
diamond-shaped grid with numbered
squares and written clues for 31 words.
It was first called “word-cross.”
The game was an instant hit and
became a weekly feature. A typesetting
error later changed the name to
“crossword,” and the name stuck. In
1924, fledgling publishers Simon &
Schuster printed a collection of the
World’s puzzles. The book was an
overnight sensation and made
crosswords a major craze. Soon,
newspapers across the country featured
crossword puzzles.
Today, there are countless variations
of crosswords based on design, size
and difficulty.
