The Enigma of M. C. Escher:
Prints from The Israel Museum, Jerusalem
Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was a renowned Dutch print artist. This Exhibition is from the Israel
Museum, Jerusalem. Its Escher collection was generously donated by a New York art collector Charles Kramer
and his family. 152 of Escher’s masterpieces will be exhibited, including 141 prints, 6 sketches, 4 woodcuts
and 1 carved sphere, covering all stages of his career and diverse types of representative works. To explore
the illusionary art master Escher's magical style, the Exhibition is divided into 6 sections: techniques and their
secrets, the human figure, scientific explorations, legend and religion, landscapes, and optical illusions.

Collection and Dialogue — Taiwan's Contemporary Ink Painting
In the art of Chinese ink painting, much importance is always attached to which school the artist attended or which teacher the
artist learned from. In this exhibition, works from the Museum’s collection of Chinese ink paintings are selected to reflect the
relatively influential teaching styles of ink painting during the post-war period in Taiwan,
review the development trends of contemporary ink painting in Taiwan, and explore
the present and future of new-generation ink painting artists in the 21st century. As an
ink painting master in the early Qing Dynasty proposed, “The brush and ink must be
aligned to the times.” The art of ink painting must change its form, content and theme
as its most direct response to the unique temporal and spatial context of the times.

Arts Exchange
This exhibition showcases Formosa the Beautiful: Images of Taiwan from the 1950s, a masterpiece by celebrated artist Lin Chihhsin. With each panel sized 243 x 112cm, this whole picture of 102 connected oil paintings
records the scenery of Taiwan from the 1950s as one work. Most significantly, Formosa
the Beautiful, which has a total length of 248 meters, provides a full view of Taiwan from
the northern tip of Keelung Islet to the southern end of the Eluanbi Lighthouse, detailing
the nature, culture, geographical and ecological features, customs and lifestyles of the
island. This is the very first time this painting is presented to the viewing public.

Sharing the same cultural root, the art scenes across the Strait, however, have both become
pluralistic and multi-perspective in the wake of a transformation brought about by a synthesis
of influences (of history, politics, economics, external exchanges, etc). In such a contemporary
context, arts exchange leads to exploration of cultural sources and also gives rise to the related
issues worthy of profound thinking; for example, the internal transition of landscape in realty
occurring under the intertwining and overlapping landscapes/spectacles of reality, the importance
of cultural reference in the context of globalization, the contemporary art searches in the
multidimensional reflection, and so on. The exhibition not only provides an insight into the crossStrait artists’ reflections, thirty in total, on both personal existential experiences and societies they
live in, invites viewers to access art from various angles, but also fosters more possible orientations
for visual dialogues to take place within the space of art museums.

Foster + Partners: The Art of Architecture
How do we design for a sustainable future? Over the past five decades, Foster and
Partners has explored this theme through a wide range of projects, from museums to
airports, factories, parliament buildings, opera houses and office towers. The exhibition
includes some of the world’s most recognizable buildings and structures, such as the
Millau Viaduct in France, the Reichstag in Berlin and London’s Swiss Re Headquarters
tower. The exhibition includes original sketches, models and a special exhibit, which follow
the entire design process from first client meeting to analysis of the completed building.

Forum for Creativity in Art LisztChou Yu-Cheng Solo Exhibition
Chou converts art into a platform of resource exchange and production through his aesthetic and social operations as a
proactive attempt to explore the position of artists in contemporary art. Curated by Xu Jianyu, an independent curator, this exhibition is intended to systematically present Chou’s art
by reviewing different themes behind his works over the past years such as the theme of
“industrial mechanism” behind his TOA Lighting or the theme of “dual meanings of work—
work as profession or work as creation” behind his A Working History. Lastly, through his
latest work, Liszt, which is first shown to the public in this exhibition, viewers are reminded
to focus on the artist himself and to think about who a professional artist/Chou Yu-cheng is.

Gallery for Citizens- Crashing Rocks and Clouds:
Calligraphy and Seal Engraving by Lee Ming-chi
Free from the constraints and rules from any school of traditional calligraphy and seal engraving, Lee engages himself in the
artistic creation of these two traditional Chinese arts with great ease and comfort. In this exhibition titled “Crashing Rocks
and Clouds”, which is a famous quotation from the Ode of Red Cliff by Su Dong-po, the concept of modern art is incorporated
while the mechanisms of installation art and digital output are also applied to enabling
3D presentation of Lee’s works as well as diversified visual effects through the light
projection and exhibit arrangement.
In this exhibition, viewers can see how Lee, as an ink painting artist, explores the
possibilities of calligraphy and seal engraving, both traditional and modern, and how the
inclusion of ink painting into calligraphy and seal engraving can give birth to a diversified
variety of facets for these two traditional Chinese art forms.

Children's Museum of Art
6.28-5.24.2015 ■CMA Gallery 202 Art & Poem, Hand in Hand
Poetry is an art of language and hearing. Painting is an art of style and vision. As described by a Greek poet, poetry is painting that
speaks while painting is silent poetry. In the long historical tradition of painting, much emphasis has been placed on the practice of
“painting in poetry and poetry in painting”. The exhibition, Art and Poem, Hand in Hand, is a feast of art and culture with poets and
artists working hand in hand in a dialogue of aesthetic exploration. Based on poetry for children, this exhibition is intended to inspire
children’s creativity, nurture their imagination, and broaden their horizon. There are four sections in
this exhibition: in the “Teardrops of Stars” section, there are poems and paintings created by the
participating poets, expressing their abstract inner emotions and demonstrating how poets can cross
literature and painting, and then bringing words of artistic and abstract imagination to life. In “Poetry
as Painting”, viewers can appreciate how poets wield their magic and demonstrate the glamor of
patterns in poems through their layering, splitting and enlarging of Chinese words such as “mountain”,
“cloud”, “umbrella” and “utility pole”…

Though 17-year-old Julien enjoys the unbridled affection of his mother, he has always felt
distant from his father, Paul, a rugged outdoorsman and avid thrill-seeker. Paul bitterly
resents the congenital palsy that confines his son to a wheelchair, and has often sought
work far from home as a means of suppressing his frustrations. With the termination of
his latest contract, however, the situation quickly comes to a head. Discovering an article

Kaohsiung Pictorial – Talking about Kaohsiung

Steel Super:
Kaohsiung International Steel & Iron Sculpture Festival
On July 31, 2014 at 23:56 a series of petrochemical gas explosions took place in Kaohsiung's
bustling city center. Kaohsiung Pictorial impels us to ponder: what Kaohsiung Pictorial had exposed
were Kaohsiung City's 35 years of official historical records until the development of today's green
energy, creative and cultural, tourism, and convention and exhibition industries that accommodate
today’s liveable city's demands; what Kaohsiung Pictorial didn't show was the silent sadness of
Kaohsiung for being a heavy industry city of Taiwan. Therefore, contemplating what we see and
what we don't see in the contents of Kaohsiung Pictorial, who we are, where we were, and where
we are going is the profound significance of “Kaohsiung Pictorial – Talking about Kaohsiung” which
is organized by the Kaohsiung Museum of History.

Chen Cize’s Calligraphy
and Painting Exhibition
Chen Cize was born in 1926 in Jiading
fishing village in Kaohsiung. He has shown
interests in painting and calligraphy since he was a child. As his parents
doted on him, he could doodle as much as he liked. In 1947, the 228
Incident occurred in Taiwan. While Chen Cize was studying at National
Taiwan University, he was held in detention for nearly a year without any
legitimate reason. After he finished his studies he was assigned to work at
Taiwan Cooperative Bank. Subsequent to his retirement he concentrates
on painting and calligraphy. As we are approaching the Human Rights
Day (December 10), the exhibition of Chen Cize's works can better
demonstrate coastal residents' vitality and perseverance.

The Fongyi Academy is the earliest and largest academy among existing academies
in Taiwan. It is also an academy with well-organized sections. Founded in 1814, it
was Taiwan´s largest academy at the time of its completion. During the period of
Japanese rule, because of the Governor-General of Taiwan´s vigorous promotion of a
new education system, the Fongyi Academy received little attention and its buildings
deteriorated over the years. After World War II, the Fongyi buildings were used by
various tenants as residence and the sections of the buildings were severely damaged.
On November 13, 1985, the Fongyi Academy was officially named by the Taiwanese
government as a national monument. After obtaining the land use rights, the city
government proceeded with administrative operations involving the relocation of the
tenants. In 2007, the Fongyi Academy was outsourced to subcontractors by the Bureau
of Cultural Affairs to restore the academy. The restoration process was completed
in October 2013, after which the city government initiated exhibition planning. On
November 1, 2014, the Fongyi Academy was officially open for operation.
To create an academy-like atmosphere, information of the Fongshan region, the Fongyi
Academy, and the history of the imperial examination were put on display. Wenchang
Temple was also open for worshipping. The Fongyi Academy is a true example of
restoring and revitalizing monuments; visitors are welcome to pay a trip to the Fongyi
Academy to appreciate its magnificent buildings and cultural history.

Pop music singers and bands performing in Kaohsiung's
restaurants, pubs and cafés help enrich the night life of the city,
and make the pop music environment more dynamic. Residents

locations to experience through live performances the ad-lib
power of these singers and musicians.
A diary is a daily record, an intimacy of personal memory. It is meaningful because it records one’s
present moment's matters. It is significant because it contains an extensive series of data. The
diaries that are exhibited in this exhibition are the treasures from the digital archive of the Institute
of Taiwan History of Academia Sinica. A section "Kaohsiung in Diaries" was especially designed
which exclusively collects diarists' writings about Kaohsiung. The Museum hopes visitors can relate
to today's Kaohsiung what the diarists' impressions were of Kaohsiung.
