Principal’s Message...
The month of December has quickly arrived, along with the colder
weather. The busy month of November passed very quickly, as it
was filled with active learning, fun activities, and opportunities to
reflect and meet with families following the distribution of the
progress reports. I would like to thank all the students and parents
who attended our Three-way Conferences on November 20 and 21.
It was great to see all of you as we know that a good home-school
partnership has a huge influence on your child's success. I would
also like to thank the JPPS staff for all that they do on a daily basis.
In addition to the “academic” work, I'd like to thank them for all of
the extras that they do for their students and for the school. Merci
beaucoup!
With this new month comes a very special season. The holiday
season offers a unique opportunity to create and share magical
moments with those closest to us. Holidays are always greatly
anticipated and this is often when the spirit of giving and sharing
comes alive! Our wish for the members of our community is that
their lives can be filled with happiness, warmth, and a spirit of
giving and sharing. Together we can all work at making that
feeling last throughout the rest of the year. Students are reminded
that this generosity is something they can continue in various
ways in the community throughout the year. Kindness and care are
things that make all the difference in the world and to those
around us.
As we mentioned last month, we will be holding three winter
concerts in the next few weeks, December will certainly be a busy
month! Our Kindergarten students will start the celebration on
Friday, December 12th with an Open House for their parents. In
addition to creating a special craft, students will also have a
chance to perform on the stage for their parents. Intermediate
students will the 1st group to showcase their talents in front of an
audience on Monday, December 15th, and finally our primary
division will entertain their captive audience on Wednesday,
December 17th and on Thursday, December 18th! Primary parents
need to verify on what night their child's class will be performing.
We are encouraging everyone to bring a non-perishable item as
their entry ticket to the concerts. The FM Heard parking lots will
also be used as our overflow parking lot. We look forward to these
wonderful events showcasing our students' learning and talents!

Fundraiser for the Residents of Fairview Lodge
We'd like to thank all those who were able to contribute to our fundraiser for the residents affected by the
devastating fire at Fairview Lodge, on October 27th, 2014. In all, our school community collected just over
$845.00. All of the money raised went directly to The Regional Municipality of Durham, where funds received
will be used to assist the residents affected by the fire. The generosity of our Julie Payette families was
overwhelming and a reflection of the wonderful community we live in.
Julie Payette P.S. Holiday Concerts
We are excited to announce that primary & intermediate students at Julie Payette PS are very busy preparing for
our upcoming holiday concerts. The school's holiday concerts are a perfect opportunity for our students to
showcase their talents through the arts. We look forward to seeing parents at our concerts. Our primary concert
will be offered over two evenings to accommodate the high number of spectators. Please check the information
below that outlines which day/evening your child(ren) will be performing.
In addition to the two evening shows we will also be offering two matinees, serving both as dress rehearsals and as
another chance for family members to see the performance.

PARKING
There will be large crowds and parking will no doubt cause some difficulties. We encourage you to park at
F. M. Heard P.S. as both parking lots will be open in the evenings of Dec. 17 & 18.
We hope to see everyone at the Holiday Concerts and please remember to bring a non-perishable food
item…this will be your entry ticket! On December 16th donations to support our music department (band)
will be appreciated.
Holiday Post Office-Literacy Is Alive at Julie Payette!
This Holiday Season, the students at Julie Payette will have the opportunity to develop and
strengthen their writing skills by participating in our school's “Holiday Post Office” letter
writing activity. This school-wide initiative will provide a framework designed to
encouraged and enhance writing skills learned in the classroom. Students will have the
opportunity to write and exchange letters within our school community.
Parents can also participate in this event by writing to their children at the school between
December 11th and December 18th. To address a letter, please refer to the address key
posted on our website. Letters can be written in English or French and can be mailed in the
boxes in the front foyer at the school.

A Word about Class Snacks…
While we appreciate the thoughtful intentions from families who send in treats and snacks around
celebrations and parties, we respectfully ask you to limit the items sent to the school to light and
nutritious snacks only. For health and safety reasons around food allergies we must be careful about the
food items in classrooms. As well, please communicate with the classroom teacher prior to sending any
items to the school. Thank you for your support!

Students in Grade 4 to Grade 8 ~ Ski/Snowboard Club 2014 (Mme Hofmann)
Canadian winters can be very harsh and unpleasant. However, they become much more enjoyable
when we participate in fun and exciting activities like skiing and snowboarding. This year the
ski/snowboard club has scheduled Wednesday evenings at SkyLoft Ski Resort. The evening sessions
will run on January 14 and 28 and February 4, 11, and 18. Pre-registration has already taken place.
Permission packages will be sent home by Friday, December 5 and must be returned no later than
December 17, 2014, please make cheques payable to: Julie Payette P.S.
Eco-Club
Our school eco-club is hard at work trying to get the message to Julie Payette students to be as eco-friendly
as possible. This means trying to cut down on energy use and reducing garbage in the school. Our eco-club
student leaders often offer friendly reminders to staff and students to boomerang their lunches, use reusable containers, turn off lights and separate the non-recyclable and recyclable items. Thank you ecoclub!

A food drive will be held at Julie Payette P.S.from December 6th to the
19th. If you are attending the Holiday Concerts please remember to
bring a non-perishable food item as this will be your entry ticket!

Inclement Weather
With winter right around the corner, parents are reminded to listen to the following radio stations for
up-to-date information on school closures due to inclement weather. When buses are cancelled in the
morning, noon and afternoon transportation will not operate.
Students who are dropped off by parents in the morning will have to be picked up again by parents at
dismissal time (2:35 p.m.)
If your child will not be attending school due to a bus cancellation, please contact the school and
leave a message on our Safe Arrival Line: 905.668.2225 extention 1.

Safe Schools
In accordance with Julie Payette’s Safe School Policy, we remind parents to use the front
entrance and to report to the office immediately when visiting the school. If you have to
drop off items for your child, please deliver them directly to the office and we will notify
your child to prevent interruptions during classroom instruction time.
If you are volunteering in the school, please sign in at the office and use the “Visitor” or
“Volunteer/Bénévol” tags to identify yourself while in the school. Safety is everyone's
responsibility.

Thank you for your diligence in calling the school and leaving a message on line 1 when your child is absent. Your
help with this process allows the office staff to finish this very important safety procedure quickly and efficiently.
Together we make a difference!
In Case of an Emergency
In case of an emergency, the school may need to contact parents. For this reason, it is
imperative that you report any and all changes in your home, work or cell phone
numbers as soon as possible to the office. It is also just as important to keep
“emergency contacts” up to date.
Dress for the Weather
Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. The children should plan on going outdoors for recesses
except in extreme conditions. In these cases, indoor recesses and lunch hours will be necessary. Please remember
to have all clothing labeled with your child's name.
Extra Clothes
We would like to encourage all students to bring an extra set of clothes to school in case of an accident, (wet
clothing due to falling at recess or a lunch accident). If you know that your child is prone to spilling or getting dirty
when playing, this may save you from having to make an extra trip to school. Your child can leave a change of
clothing in their back pack.
Lost Items
We would like to remind parents that the school will NOT be responsible for any lost
items such as trading cards, toy cars, or any other “collectable” toys. Electronics,
jewellery or items with sentimental value should also be left at home, unless they have
a special project at school such as show & tell.
We also recommend that you label all your children's clothing including coats, mittens,
scarves and boots. If a lost item has a name on it, it can be returned to its rightful
owner. We will continue to encourage all students to check the lost and found box
when they are missing clothing items. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Buses will pick up the students one hour early (1:35 PM).
School will start again after the winter break on Monday, January 5th, 2015
