December ‘14 • AL Read about what’s happening this month! HarborChase | Rock Hill | 1611 Constitution Boulevard • Rock Hill, South Carolina 29732 | 803/981-6855 | CRC 1290 HarborChase Times T’was the night before Christmas at our HarborChase, the home that we love, such a wonderful place. The meds were dispensed by LaQuita with care, Lipitor, Aricept, and Lasix were there. Care Managers helping residents to bed, as visions of freedom danced through their heads. With James strolling, and Ethan in tow and Audrey and Anne gabbing on the go. When in the dining room there arose such a clatter, the staff had just dropped a Christmas Eve platter. Away from the Bistro Carol flew like a flash, With her earrings and necklace caught up in her sash. “WHO DROPPED THAT PLATTER!” she demanded to know “TELL ME NOW OR YOU GOTS TO GO!” When, what to my wandering eyes should appear, but Scott seasoning a duck and a deer. With the sound of high heels, and the pop of a cork, in came Kathleen with a knife and a fork. The aroma spread, and through the doors Teri came, get the associates and residents, she called them by name: now Shelia, LaTonya, and Aundra get Lonnie. Get Dorris, grab Ruby, tell Carl get Connie. From the top of the Bistro, to the end of the hall, Be careful! Be careful! You don’t want to fall. As walkers and wheelchairs move through the tables, all obstacles, missed cause we are all able. Down 200 hall came Larry, he flew with Richard and Graham and Margaret too. And then in a stampede I heard down the hall, our Memory Care dolls, Deb guiding them all. “It’s dinner time?” she said “I tell ya my memory is gone.” “I’ve been around my darlings, far too long.” Chris was dressed all in plaid from his head to his foot, from cleaning the fireplace, he was covered in soot. Martha and Barbra finished cleaning the rooms, as Leslie helped Virginia locate her broom. Ivan’s eyes – determined and looked quite scary, beamed in delight as he ran into Larry. Jenae said “guys there is room for us all.” “Jenae” Nadine said, “Your TOUR! YOUR TOUR IS HERE!” In walked Gladys with a scowl on her face, “You know Antwane, you and I are the only ones who really work around this place!” With a wink of our eyes we suddenly heard, Charlie Workman shouting rhythmic words. “Frances Workman, where are you? I love you so much!” “I’m right here Charlie.” She calmed him with a touch. Then Charlie exclaimed as he rolled out of sight, “Merry Christmas to all and to all MOUNT CYANIDE!” Welcome! But with a little planning and forethought, the traditionally fattening foods and eating-centered celebrations of the holiday season won’t wreak havoc on your diet. Ditch Full-Fat Dairy: Consuming a lot of regular dairy products increases your fat and calorie intake exponentially. Consider healthier substitutions in recipes whenever possible, such as replacing sour cream with plain yogurt. Think Turkey: Turkey is one of the leanest types of meat. Stick to broiling, stewing or baking as preparation methods. For example, cook using a rack so the fat will drip away from the meat. When selecting other types of meats, buy leaner cuts whenever possible. Don’t Show Up Hungry: Arriving at a party with a growling tummy is a surefire way to make the wrong choices and overeat without even realizing it. Never “save up” your calories during the day by not eating; it will only backfire and cause you to eat more in the end. Fill Up with Fiber: Not only are vegetables naturally low-fat, low-cal and chock-full of nutrients, they help you feel satisfied longer than other types of foods. Eating raw veggies as snacks, appetizers, in salads, and side dishes is a great way to keep your appetite in check. Forget the D-Word: The holiday season is the most difficult time to try to diet. Focus on maintaining your weight over the holidays by controlling portions, making healthier choices, and getting regular physical activity. The “Twelve Days of Christmas” was originally written to help Catholic children in England remember different articles of faith during the persecution by Protestant monarchs. The “true love” represented God and “the gifts” represented different ideas: • The “Partridge in a pear tree” was Christ. • Two Turtle Doves = The Old and New Testaments • Three French Hens = Faith, Hope and Charity-the Theological Virtues • Four Calling Birds = the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists • Five Golden Rings = The first Five Books of the Old Testament, the “Pentateuch”, which relays the history of man’s fall from grace. • Six Geese A-laying = the six days of Creation • Seven Swans A-swimming =the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments • Eight Maids A-milking = the eight beatitudes • Nine Ladies Dancing = the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit • Ten Lords A-leaping = the ten commandments • Eleven Pipers Piping = the eleven faithful apostles • Twelve Drummers Drumming = the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle’s Creed S U D O K U Time for a Change? Consider these New Year’s Resolutions • Set aside 15 minutes of quality time for yourself every day • Exercise at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes • Establish a journal to record positive events and experiences • Celebrate every day • Read a good book, every month if possible • Laugh more and try to see the funny side of life • Find a realistic balance between work and pleasure • Take time to listen to good music Brain Food Fish is brain food. Researchers who looked at brain scans of healthy older adults enrolled in a ten year study found that of those who regularly ate any kind of baked or broiled fish once a week had more gray matter in brain regions responsible for memory and cognition. Take a Minute to Unwind Over the Holiday Season 1. Have 15 minutes? Call a family member or friend that you have been meaning to connect with and have just been too busy to call. The Comedy Corner 2. Have 30 minutes to spare? Sit down and create your own Christmas cards for your close friends and family. Creating your own cards allows you the ability to personalize the cards to your liking. My friend reviewed her young son’s fill-in-the-blank homework. One line: “At Christmas, we exchange gifts with ____.” His response: “Receipts.” 3. Have an extra 45 minutes? Start on your “to do” list for the New Year. Take this time to unwind and make some decisions of things you want to accomplish for the new year. As we were putting out cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve, I accidentally dropped one. “No problem,” I said, picking it up and dusting it off before placing it back on the plate. “You can’t do that,” argued my four-year-old. “Don’t worry. Santa will never know.” He shot me a look. “So he knows if I’ve been bad or good, but he doesn’t know the cookie fell on the floor?” 4. Fortunate enough to have 60 minutes to spare? Take the family outside to embrace the colder weather. If you live in a snowy region, have fun making a snowman or maybe going sledding or ice skating. Do whatever it takes so you and your family can enjoy some of the simple pleasures of the season. There’s nothing better than creating memories that you will share for years to come.
