DUFFIELD SCENE December 2014 Edition 266 Published monhly LIFE SAVING IDEA LEADS TO GLOBAL BUSINESS Appalled by the number of troops returning from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan with extensive burns caused by improvised explosive devices, Andy Caughey was convinced these casualty numbers could be minimised. Duffield resident Andy (50) came up with an idea he was sure would lessen the toll of deaths and injuries. “It is all about saving your skin,” he said, noting that unlike the synthetic fibres found in most high performance T-shirts, merino AndyCaughey wool will not melt or drip, synthetics melt at low temperatures. Now his recently formed company Armadillo Marino is selling his protective, next-toskin range of clothing around the world and for use in space travel in what promises to be a multi-million pound annual business, Since the beginning of 2012 his company has supplied garments for assessment, field testing and procurement by a number of institutions including NASA, the Royal Marines (Mountain Leaders) and Police, the Mountain Rescue Service, Australian Wild land Fire Fighters, the Canadian Land Force, the Danish and Israeli Special Forces, the USA Coastguard, the South African Army and the Italian Navy. With global enquiries escalating to his Duffield office, realist Andy is confident the acumen he showed in spotting a niche which is saving lives each day is on the way to further success. VILLAGE CENTRE CHANCE SPURNED S irs , Reader’s letter I am a relatively new resident of Duffield, having lived in the village for the past 9 years. Having seen the building work to Duffield Hall, I casually looked into the history of the building on the internet and found the Wikipedia site quite interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki /Duffield_Hall Wikipedia revealed that the school was the site of St Ronan’s School http://www.duffieldderbyshi re.co.uk/ronans.htm Andy has offered a 15% discount until 31st December to residents I understand that this may be in the Duffield area. old news to many residents Enter Duffield 15 on the BUT the footnote to this webArmadillo Merino® site was interesting which website or call 07891 said that after the closure of 284224. -5- the school, the lease ‘reverted to Mrs. Wigley, who offered the Melbourn Hall ….as a gift to the village for immediate use. Unfortunately the planning authorities and the village could not come to an agreement and sadly the gift was never taken up’. I would be interested to understand if any resident knows the history behind this and why the gift was never taken up. I can’t help but wonder what a difference this Hall would have made to the village as a centre for the community. Again, I am sorry if this is common knowledge to many residents but it is not known to me. There is the pitched roof to deal with, the awkward ceiling shapes and the issues of light and heat, but that still shouldn’t stop you from loving your loft space. Whether you convert yours into an extra bedroom or create a laid-back den, lofts are hidden out of the way and present the ideal opportunity to create something dreamy, delightful, or dramatic. Get up there and have a look for yourself. Opening up your loft can be a brilliant way to add both space and value to your home. But planning the conversion can be a little daunting. It’s not something many of us are too knowledgeable about, and all the steps and regulations need to be carefully thought through. Investigate whether you need planning permission Not all properties require planning permission: most houses have permitted development rights of 40 or 50 cubic metres, depending on the type of house, which will allow a conversion without full planning permission. However, permission is required for all flats, and for houses in conservation areas. Consider a specialist Building companies who specialise in loft conversions provide the full package, sorting everything for you. You need only deal with fixtures, fittings, timescale and payment. Think outside the box Once you’ve sorted the rules, regs, paperwork and chosen your -14- builder you can then work together to design your new space. Attics are often converted into extra bedrooms, but why not consider moving one of the household rooms upwards like the study or even the kids playroom. The space you create downstairs could then be developed into a dining room or bathroom. Another great idea is to transform an unused loft space into a fabulous home theatre. Stick to lighter shades Whatever type of room conversion you choose, using pale colours and subtle patterns will maximise light levels and increase the feeling of space in a small or awkwardly shaped loft so in a very short space of time you will have a whole new level to your home that all the family, and the guests, can enjoy. The appeal for help came at a tea party held at the ~Bluebbird Care offices in Belper when some volunteers gathered to discuss how they can host tea parties on a regular basis for those older members of our community twho suffer from feelings of isolation and loneliness. The response was fantastic, according to Contact the Elderly Development Officer for Derbyshire, Angela Handforth. ‘“There are a lot of people in the local community who are keen to do what they can to help combat loneliness in old age. “We have had an excellent response and have created a new group to cover Belper and Duffield that will meet for the first time in the New Year,” said Angela. “The winter is a particularly difficult time for a lot of older people and the potential hazards of snow and ice can make leaving the house difficult and can therefore increase isolation. “ She added: “It would be good to create another group in Duffield in the New Year. However, we are now keen to hear from those older people in the area who do feel lonely, particularly on a Sunday, which is when our Tea Parties happen.” Want to know more about the Elderly Belper/Duffield group please contact Angela Handforth on 0114 2302343, or [email protected] -17- No. 1 Webern Langsamer Satz Beethoven String Quartet Op. 59 No.1 Saturday Dec. 6th First prize winners of the ‘Val Tidone International Chamber Music Competition’ 2010 and the 'St Martin's Chamber Music Competition' 2013, and third prize winners of the ‘Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition’ 2013, the Jubilee Quartet was formed in 2006 at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Hea ltwithh an d Wellb ein g Dr. Stavros Mihaletos DC MChiro Chiropractic is the science and art of optimising health in the body. Often people feel they need to understand where the pain is in the body, and why a structure or tissue has developed this discomfort. They also want to understand why chiropractic treatment works the way it does. Musculoskeletal pain around the body is mostly caused when tissues are strained or sprained or stressed in any way beyond their ability to handle the stress placed on them. It is strange though how even at times picking up a piece of paper or getting into car, or even just sitting for a period can cause a problem in an area. This is quite simple to explain. When the body is compensating for a previous injury, the central nervous system, ie. our body mind, will switch muscles on and off to avoid putting undue stress on the injured area. We call these facilitated (on) muscles and inhibited (off) muscles. They may be only partly inhibited or facilitated, lets say 75% inhibited, but that means they cannot handle a stress that they normally would easily handle. that is when you pick up a paper with a severly inhibited muscle in your back and WHAM!...pain! As chiropractors we don't heal your body. We find joints, muscles or other tissue that are sending aberrant proprioceptive sensory feed up into the nervous system and we adjust the tissue to make the central nervous system more robust. In a sense, that is our job...making the nervous system more robust so that it can handle the postural, repetitive and/or other stresses placed on it in normal daily life. When the nervous system (ie the biocomputer, or body brain) has spare resources it can spend energy healing itself. In chiropractic philosophy the founder of chiropractic applied a term in 1895 that is still used today, though a little controversial. He termed this self healing power our Innate, meaning a self possessed power within each one of us, that works from within our body and heals. Not hard to understand, considering that when we cut ourselves, we need only apply a bandage to our wound and when we remove it our body has patched itself up. It is an art to find these areas of disfunction, and this is why chiropractors study one of the most intense courses at university nowadays. I have enjoyed reading titles I would not normally have chosen, it has certainly been a challenge! I have recently read The -19- Carole-Ann Duffield Library 840324 Memory of Midnight by Pamela Hartshorne. Set in York in the present day and 1561, this tells the story of Tess and Nell as they are each faced with a dangerous decision. In the present day, Tess must unlock the secrets of the past before she can free herself and Nell. This is a very entertaining tale which was enjoyable to read. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Carole and the team LUNCHING ALONGSIDE A BIRD OF PREY When the days grow shorter and the clocks go back by an hour (remember “Clocks fall back in Autumn and then Spring forward”) it is usually a signal for my husband to begin to adopt his winter demeanour which includes feeling sleepy during the day, not being keen to go out unless it is sunny and generally feeling slightly depressed. The children used to ask if we could put him in a large cardboard box full of leaves to hibernate and only wake him in the spring like the Blue Peter tortoise! This year we had the benefit of a late holiday at the end of October to see our son and his family in New York where Dan has bought and is renovating a Brownstone house in Brooklyn. The weather was unseasonable and we strolled in Prospect Park in glorious warm sunshine watching the tiny kinglet birds fluttering like moths amongst the wonderful red, orange and yellow autumnal leaves. At three and a half inches from beak tip to tail, they are akin to goldcrests, the U.K’s smallest birds, which can be seen searching for insects amongst the birch same variety that are trees on the meadow. busy in our copses The park is used for on the Meadow – recreation by local driven by the people but a cooler weather section is and the shorter protected as a days to make Nature reserve. provision for It was clearly the possibly by managed, with hard winter MILLENIUM notices that dogs ahead. are not allowed MEADOW CHAIR However, the to run around most DI HANCOCK during the day and spectacular have to be on leads encounter we had of not more than 6 with nature was not feet in length. Normally associated with arable land where they soar high in the sky and hunt mammals like rabbits, they have found the tall buildings in Manhattan ideal nesting sites and urban pigeons in large supply. Our Meadow also hosts birds of prey as they find it a useful hunting ground for mammals and birds. The success of the breeding peregrines on Derby cathedral means that this year’s progeny will no doubt have surveyed our meadow and taken advantage of the food they find. A few years ago, whilst visiting my mother at the other end of the village, we watched as a peregrine falcon attacked a group of starlings feeding on her lawn and proceeding to eat one in exactly the same way as the American hawk whilst we watched through the kitchen window! And last year a young peregrine took a sparrow from my garden as I sat drinking my coffee not 10 feet away! As the Reserve’s trees mature and gain their full height over the next fifty years, people can look forward to changes in the species that frequent the Meadow. The oaks may make sixty or seven feet in height and thus become staging posts for nesting barn owls and little owls, a crucial site for nesting woodpeckers or could become attractive as nesting sites for birds of prey like kestrels. The ground underneath the trees will be open and colonized by a wider variety of native wild plants. Standing dead wood will provide rich habitat for beetles, wasps, roosting birds and bats. So whilst urban wildlife is interesting and thrilling to see at times, nothing can beat the variety and diversity of a maturing reserve like ours. Happy Xmas and New Year. -21 - DON’T MAKE IT A FESTIVE TIME FOR THIEVES Christmas and New Year will soon be here and with homes filling with presents and supplies for the festive period there is often an increase in the frequency of burglaries. To help deter burglars in the festive season these are some useful tips to help prevent becoming a victim to an opportunist thief. • Make sure gifts and valuables, wrapped and unwrapped, are out of view and not visible from any windows. This applies in the car as well as in the home • Ensure your property is fitted with locking windows and substantial locks on doors as this will deter criminals • Photograph valuable property and log any serial numbers. Don’t store the information on a laptop, as that might be stolen too – keep it on a memory stick in a safe place • Mark any expensive gifts you receive for Christmas with a UV pen, smartwater or property marking service. This will make it harder for burglars to sell the items and allow police to return them to you. Call your local policing team on 101 for advice about property marking products. You can register your property with www.immobilise.com which is endorsed by a number of police forces, which helps police reunite recovered stolen items with their owners • Keep doors and windows locked even if you are home – it only takes seconds for an opportunist burglar to get into your property. Lock all doors and windows, leave a light on and draw the curtains when you go out at night • Bolt and padlock garden gates and make sure you don’t leave ladders out, or other things that burglars could easily use to climb on. Remember to lock your garden shed and store your tools inside; it stops burglars using your tools to break into your house. Consider fitting extra padlocks to gates, sheds and garages. Don’t keep presents in the garage or shed Don’t put gift packaging • out for recycling or leave it sticking out of your bin – thieves will notice boxes for branded products like laptops, TVs or accessories that could indicate an expensive piece of kit somewhere in the house. The safest thing to do is to break down any cardboard boxes or fold them inside out so that you cannot see the branding • If you’re going away, ask a trusted neighbour to pop in to your home every now and then to turn the lights on and off, draw the curtains, collect the mail and make the house look occupied. Cancel newspapers, magazines and milk deliveries. It is also recommend that you don't advertise the fact you are away from your home on Social Networking sites thieves use Social Media too! • Visible burglar alarms, exterior security lighting, timer lighting switches and leaving the radio on help to deter thieves and give the impression that somebody is at home Branding ■ Graphic Design ■ Packaging Exhibitions ■ Website Design ■ Marketing • If you don’t have much contact with your neighbours, Christmas could be the perfect time to break the ice, have a friendly chat and get to know them a bit better www.snakelane.co.uk 01332 840 880 [email protected] 7 Market Place, Cathedral Quarter, Derby DE1 3QE Snake Lane Design -22- • Burglars wander around looking for chances.
