BJP accusess JMM of intimidating PM's words on issues threatening nation's
candidates, JMM trashes charges secular fibre will improve his stature: Nitish

Ahead of the final phase of
state Assembly polls on Saturday, the BJP today accused the JMM of "intimidation and undemocratic
tactics" against its candidates and their relatives in
Dumka and Barhait assembly seats.
"JMM activists are intimidating BJP candidates
and workers in Dumka and
Barhait. We will move the
Election
Commission
against the actions," party's
Jharkhand unit president
Ravindra Rai said in a joint
press conference here. Rai
accused chief minister
Hemant Soren of instigating
his activists against the BJP.
Soren is contesting in both
the seats. Leader of Opposition and former chief minis-
ter Arjun Munda said the
Election Commission itself
has stressed upon free and
fair elections, but the people
sitting in constitutional
posts were indulging in unconstitutional ways in intimidating and misbehaving
with BJP candidates and
their relatives.
T S Rawat, the in-charge
of BJP's state unit, said the
party has given a written
complaint to the police. Denying the allegations,
JMM's general secretary
Vinod Pandey said that the
charges against the chief
minister and his family reflected the BJP's frustration
of being in a perilous situation in the elections. The last
16 seats going for polls tomorrow are in Santhal
Pargana, said to be the bas-
tion of Shibu Soren's
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.
Meanwhile, the saffron
party has filed an fir against

with assaulting of bjp activists in dumka, the police
said. The FIR was filed at
the Muffassil police station
in Dumka district on behalf
of the party by BJP's poll
observer Savran Manoj

up its workers on Thursday
night. BJP's Dumka candidate Louis Marandi staged a
sit-in near the party office,

today "blamed" BJP for stalemate in Parliament and suggested Prime Minister
Narendra Modi that his
words on controversial issues threatening secular fabric of the country would
rather enhance his stature.

you speak two words it
would rather enhance your
stature)," Kumar said in his
piece of advise to the Prime
Minister. He urged Modi not
to make it a "prestige issue"
and his disapproval of several "irresponsible and poisonous" utterances by
partymen on religious conversion

Nathuram Godse, would
help clear the air. On Rajya
Sabha failing to discharge
function for the fifth consecutive day today, the JD-U
leader justified Opposition
conduct and criticised the
treasury benches for not taking initiative to end the
stalemate.
"Opposition is justified
in exercising its right in demanding statement from
Prime Minister on issue to
keep secularism protected

interest in the ongoing finishing works and directed
to accelerate the process besides verifying the counter

Taekwondo coach
held on rape charge
PURI, DEC 19 /--/ A Taekwondo Coach was arrested here
on charge of rape after nine orphan children and a 23-yearold girl were rescued from two illegally run homes from
separate places in the city, police said here today.
Manmohan Bhanja, a Taekwondo Coach, was held on
Thursday after three orphan boys and a girl were rescued
from a rented house in Baliapanda area, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Pravat Routray said.

CBI arrests Odisha DSP in chitfund scam
BHUBANESWAR, DEC 19 /--/ In a major
embarrassment for Odisha Police, the CBI
today arrested a deputy superintendent of
police (DSP) Pramod Panda for allegedly
deriving undue financial benefits from
Artha Tatwa Group, a major player in the
multi-crore chitfund scam in the state.
"Panda, presently a DSP of Odisha Police is arrested on charge of larger conspiracy and deriving undue financial benefits from AT Group," a CBI official said.
Panda was taken into custody after the central investigating agency interrogated him
for three consecutive days. The DSP was
presently working as a DSP in Nayagarh
district. He was for some time working for
the the Crime Branch of Odisha Police that
probed into the chitfund scam. Panda's rela-
tive Jagabandhu Panda, one of the directors of the AT Group, was earlier arrested
by the CBI. Earlier, the Orissa High Court
had refused to grant anticipatory bail to
Panda, who had approached it to avoid arrest following searches in his house by CBI
in connection with the ponzi scheme scam
in the state. Panda is currently working as
a DSP in Nayagarh district intelligence bureau. While working as DSP, Crime Branch,
which was earlier investigating the scam in
the state, he had allegedly threatened petitioner Alok Jena and his wife of dire consequence for moving the Supreme Court seeking investigation into the chit fund scandal.
It was alleged that Panda's wife's firm
received undue financial benefits from the
AT Group.
Bihar panchayat bans jeans, mobiles for girls

A village panchayat in
Bihar's Gopalganj district
has, in a diktat, banned girls
from wearing jeans and using mobile phones as these
increase the chance of the
girls "going astray".

diktat has been issued in

officer Jitendra Kumar said
the decision was taken at a
general
meeting
of
panchayat officials in

its jurisdiction with mutual
understanding and without

during a bandh called in Gaya town today by citizens and
traders to protest district adminstration's "one-sided" action
in the scuf fle between RJD MLA Surendra Yadav and a
shopkee per on Sunday. Schools, colleges, and offices remained opened and there was no hindrance to movement
of traffic on streets but shops in all prominent markets of
the tourist town remained shut, district authorities said.
Shops in minority dominated areas of Chatta Masjid, Peer
Mansoor and Plaza markets also kept their shutters down,
they said. There is no report of any untoward incident during the bandh called by "Nagrik Sangharsh Morcha" and
supported by BJP, as a reaction to the shutdown observed
on December 16 by RJD, JD-U and Congress earlier in the
week in protest against shopkeepers indulging in scuffle
with RJD MLA Surendra Yadav. Meanwhile, Opposition BJP
today raised the Gaya issue in the Legislative Council and
strongly condemned the district administration's "one
sided" action in the incident. Leader of Opposition in the

due to severe cold. The mercury level dropped to minus
point 5 degree Celsius at
Daringbadi today at 5.30 am
which is said to be the lowest temperature of the season in the entire state of
Odisha, said Ajeet Kumar

Observatory set up by the
Berhampur University. On
Wednesday, the temperature
was 3 degree Celsius and on
Tuesday it was 8 degree Celsius, Sahu said, adding that
the lowest temperature recorded today at district
headquarters town of
Phulbani at 5.30 am is 5 degree Celsius.
Apart from Daringbadi,

around Aizawl to ensure

peacefully and free of unwanted incidents, a senior
police officer said today.
Aizawl superintendent
of police C Laldina told
newspersons that four police stations in Aizawl
would conduct foot patrolling from tonight saying,
"Each police station would
send out two patrolling parties round the clock which
would be able to cover even
the remotest places of the
capital city." "Armed police,
dividing into two groups (at
least 15 cops each) would
cover the areas of Aizawl
police
station
and
Bawngkawn police station
respectively," the SP said,
adding that two sections of
armed police dividing into
two groups would also cover
the
jurisdictions
of
Kulikawn and Vaivakawn
Police stations respectively.
Round-the-clock patrolling and duty would begin
from today and would continue till January three,

Metro motorman
foils suicide bid
KOLKATA, DEC 19 /--/ A motorman of Metro Railway on
Thursday foiled suicide bid of a lady commuter aged about
30 years. The lady commuter jumped on to the rail track of
Up line in front of a Dum Dum bound Metro train at 2.46 pm
immediately after the train started from Shahid Kshudiram
Metro station. Susheel Kumar, driving motor man of the
train was very alert and stopped the train immediately. The
lady was saved due to the prompt action of the Driving
Motorman. The lady was rescued from the track with the
prompt initiative of the Motorman, Station staff and RPF/
MRP of Metro Railway and she was sent to the hospital immediately. (EOIC)
143 people test HIV
positive in Tripura
AGARTALA, DEC 19 /--/ A total of 143 people including
15 pregnant women were tested HIV positive this year, an
official of Tripura State AIDS Control Society (TSACS) said
today. "TSACS has tested 47,300 blood samples of suspected
HIV carriers till October, of which 143 persons including
15 pregnant women were found to be HIV positive," project
director of TSACS, Ashok Dey told newspersons. Last year
as many as 72,000 blood samples were tested of which 225
persons were found to be positive, he said adding 70 pregnant women tested HIV positive in the past three years.
Currently there are 68 centres for HIV test in the state
which would rise to 82 by the next year.
