Greetings,
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to every Divan officer for all the support that you have extended
to me this year during my second term in the
office of Potentate/CEO of the Rhode Island
Shriners. I further that thanks to the Shriners
Ladies for all their hard work and dedication
to our Shrine helping those in need and offering their support whenever it was needed.
We faced many changes and tackled
many obstacles throughout this year continuing to let our friends and neighbors here in
Special thanks to each and every Rhode
Island Shriner member and their respective
Units that have shown their colors and proudly marched during the parade season and offered their support with our many indoor and
outdoor events and activities this year.
The New Year is upon us, and the hard
work and dedication of being a Shriner continues. We still have a host of exciting events
that are taking place during the month of December and a great line up of more excitement to come in 2015.

We have experienced another great year here at the home
of the Rhode Island Shriners.
We faced many changes for the
good of our Shrine now and into
the future. Among those many
changes, we also decided that
it was time to deliver our main
source of communication to our
membership by bringing you the
Scimitar newspaper in a new,
exciting and much more efficient format.
Early in the year we slowly
introduced our plan to deliver
the Scimitar to our membership and devoted readers in full
digital format with easy access
of clear viewing and making it
easier to read. You must have a
current version of Adobe Reader
on your computer before you get
started.
All you have to do is go to
your personal computer, tablet,
laptop or smart phone, click on
your app that brings you to the
Internet then type in: HYPERLINK “http://www.rishriners.
com” www.rishriners.com .
Click on the listed web site that
reads: Rhode Island Shriners
and Imperial Room and that will
bring you to the home page of our
web site. There is a list of places
that you can visit. Click on the
tab that reads: Read RI Shriners

to a page that shows a listing of
each and every issue published
for the current year. Pick the issue that you want to view where
it reads: Click to View. Just 4
easy clicks and you’re there!
When you reach the particular issue that you want to see
and read, you can view it at it’s

easier reading. You can print any

like a special event in that you
may want to attend, or the calendar so you can have it handy at
all times.
The ever-changing technology of the computer has dramatically changed the way that
we communicate and obtain information. Some people can’t
wait for the next change to happen and many others struggle
with change or the ability to use
a computer of any kind. In our
plan to deliver the Scimitar to
our membership and devoted
readers, we gave careful and respectful consideration to make
sure that any Shriner that may
not have access to a computer or
email or may struggle with the
steps of reaching our newspaper
by visiting our web site, would
continue to receive a full printed
version mailed directly to your
door.
We greatly depend on the
continued advertising sponsors
who make the wise decision of
placing their business advertisement in our newspaper to reach
a wide and diversified readership with our members and
many devoted friends throughout the State of Rhode Island.
In order to show our thanks for
the support of our advertisers we
also make the Scimitar available
for free any 15-targeted news
racks, offering our newspaper
as a one-stop shopping guide for
the many available services provided by our advertisers.
More importantly, we offer our newspaper as a guide
and tool for families that have
children who may be suffering
from severe burn, bone, cleft lip
and palate problems, helping to
guide them through the process
of gaining expert and state of the
art medical treatment at any of
the 22 Nationwide Shriners Hospitals for Children regardless of
their ability to pay for medical
treatment.
With the patience and cooperation of our membership to
slowly embrace the changes that
we have made to our newspaper,
we have strengthened the foundation and future of our “Award
Winning” Scimitar Newspaper. You will always be well
informed of the most current,
fresh and exciting news happening here at the home of the
Rhode Island Shriners bringing
you a wealth of valuable information and keeping you current
for events, meetings and Shriners Hospital Nationwide news.

A message from the Chief Rabban
Chief Rabban Glenn Medeiros
Dear Nobles and Ladies all,
it will be my honor and pleasure
to serve you as the 127th Potentate of the Rhode Island Shriners
if elected. I have had a wonderful journey through the line of
officer positions in the Divan
throughout the past several years
and certainly look forward to the
position of Potentate if elected.
The Divan is going to continue
to focus on membership with the
slogan of “ Gain and Retain”.
Without new members our fraternity will die off and just be
in the history books for people
to read about. The Divan and
myself would like to make history with record numbers of new
creations. This is only possible
with the help of each and every
one of you nobles out there. Replace yourself at least once and
our job will be done for now,
our children are relying on us to
continue supporting our 22 hospitals Worldwide that provide
them with the best healthcare in
the world. Lets not let the black
camel continue to win this battle.
In just my short career as
a Shriner I have worn my Fez
with pride in many parades and
functions throughout the country at different shrine events and
it still till this day it gives me
goose bumps. I would hope all
of you as well, have the pride
and honor to wear the symbol of
the shriners as I do. This is what
I feel we need to convey to our
nobles who ask “what do you
have to offer me at the shrine”?,
and to perspective candidates to
the shrine. Some of my fondest
memories are from events my
lady Kerrie and I attended where
100 to 150 nobles and ladies also
attended the event. These events
were always sold out and you
had to beg to get a ticket or two
to participate. Nothing would
make me happier then to see
this happen once again. It was
always a pleasure to see all the
tables that had reserved signs
on them from all the units that
attended. A real fond memory
that I miss was from the clowns
doing their thing at these events
with the shooter balloons flying
around the room hitting people
while they try to eat our wonderfully prepared food. I can recall
one strawberry festival when
you could not even see the floor
because of all the balloons that
were blown up and sent sailing
through the air. Lets bring back
the fun that this wonderful organization was based upon.
As leaders, our door is always
open to new and fresh ideas, or
any question you might have.
Please feel free to talk to any Divan member or myself with anything that you feel would help
benefit the temple. Our Ladies
are a big part of our success and
future, without their support and
help we would not be able to do
what we do. In addition Hillary
and Chris are doing a great job
with the banquet facility and I
am sure will keep the ball rolling
with great events and tasty food.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Illustrious
William J. Hall for all his help

From the Desk of the Recorder
Hi Nobles,
I hope everyone enjoyed
their Thanksgiving Day with
their families and friends.
First, an update on our
Car Show – approximately 80
cars were at the Masonic Youth
Center. Everyone liked our new
location and our concessions
sold well. Thanks to all the
committee workers for a successful event. The parades in
October were a success as well.
With our good attendance at all
the parades, it was stated that the
Legion won the best attendance
award again. Congratulations,
Legion members! Next, our annual Spaghetti Dinner was held
on October 24th. Approximately 80-85 people were in attendance. Everyone enjoyed their
time and as always there was
plenty of food. Great job by
Norm Messenger for organizing the event. Finally, our last
parade of the season was held
November 11th, Veteran’s Day
in East Greenwich.
Our election of officers
was held November 10th. However, since the Scimitar dead-
line was November 5th, we will
not list the new officers until
the next issue. As always, our
meetings are held on the second
Monday of each month. Please
keep in mind our members with
health concerns and our Military during these difficult times.
This will be my last time writing
for the Scimitar. I hope it was
informative for you.

ones a wonderful and safe Holiday Season.

MENU will be served in the McIntyre Room from 4:30 – 6:30
PM.

• 2015 Artisan Chief – congratulations to Craig Sherman on

well done! Good luck as you
progress in line at Washington
Lodge # 3 and the Divan.
• Bung Hole Award –the
winner, more appropriately loser, will be announced in December at our unit meeting. Again,
the only qualification is that you
need to be yourself. Therefore,
many Artisans are in the running.
• Florida Unit – we went on
a cruise again. We set sail on a
four hour cruise on Thursday,
November the 13th aboard the
Big M Casino out of Fort Myers.
It was great to have Mike ‘Buttercup’ Smith, Charley’ Bubbles
got in my eyes’ Miller and their
ladies join Dick ‘Dickie Do’
Reilly, yours truly and our ladies.
• Binocular raffle – all Florida unit members should purchase
a ticket. The reason is that when
we go to Fort Myers or Siesta
Key beach during Spring Break
we will be able to see the scenery
much better!!!!
• November Elections –the
elections are history. The question to be answered is: Did the
citizens of the United States win?
• Patriots – they’re looking
pretty, pretty good to me! Amazing to me is the so called New
York Yankees fans that root for
the Pats, instead of the Giants. If
you think I am referring to you,
then you are definitely correct.
• Movie and Character
Trivia – name the movie and
character who said:
#1 “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
#2 “Just when I thought I was
out, they brought me back in.”
#3 “Say ‘hello’ to my little
friend!”
#4 “What we’ve got here is
failure to communicate.”
#5 “You’ll shoot your eye
out!”

enjoyed my years as the writer
for the best unit in all of Shrinedom!!

Shriners Obituaries
OWEN, JAMES CHIPPENDALE 77, died Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at home.
He was the beloved husband of
Betty Jane Northup-Owen. Born
in Fall River, MA, the son of the
late James J. and Nora (Chippendale) Owen. He was a graduate of Monsignor Coyle High
School, Taunton, MA and he attended Brown University and the
University of Rhode Island. He
lived in Coventry before moving to Middletown in 2003 and
was a winter resident of the Sarasota, Florida area. He served in
the United States Naval Reserves
from 1954-1962. He worked as
a Physical Plant Engineer for
the State of Rhode Island State
Department of Corrections at
the Super Maximum Prison in
Cranston. Since 1975 Jim has
had strong ties to the Masonic
Fraternity. His affiliations include Noquochoke Lodge A.F. &
A.M., Westport, MA; St. John’s
Lodge No. 1 Providence; Providence Chapter No. 1, Royal Arch
Masons; the Ancient Accepted
Scottish Rite Valley of Providence; Sahib Shriners, Sarasota,
FL; St. John’s Commandery No.
1, Knights Templar.; the Rhode
Island Shriners, where he was
active with the Director’s Staff
& Clown Unit and, the Masonic
Veterans Association of RI. In
Chicago, IL on August 29, 2006
Jim was coronated a 33 degree
Mason, Honorary Member of the
Supreme Council of North America, Ancient Accepted Scottish
Rite. Most recently Jim served
as Regional Chairman of the
Scottish Rite Character Builder
Leadership Committee and was
an active fundraiser for the Children’s Learning Center of RI. He
also belonged to Elks Lodge 104,
Newport and American Legion
Post 18, Portsmouth. Jim was active in Democratic politics statewide and especially in Coventry.
He was a senior arbitrator for the
Council of the Better Business
Bureaus, Inc. and he belonged to
the Naval War College Foundation in Newport, RI. He was an
accomplished clarinetist in his
youth playing with well-known
bands as they travelled through
southeastern Massachusetts. He
also was a Notary Public in Kent
County. In addition to his wife,
he leaves behind one son: James
Thomas Owen & his wife Krista
of Johnston, RI; one daughter:
Linda Mello of Massachusetts;
two brothers: John Arthur Owen
& his wife Virginia of Westport,
MA and Francis David Owen of
Little Compton, RI; one sister:
Mary Elizabeth Manning & her
husband Alan of Tonka Bay, MN;
a niece and numerous nephews
& grandnephews. He loved dearly his dogs, the Mini Pin, Heidi,
the Sheltie, Dolly and the conger parrot, Tony! Calling hours
will be held on Monday, October
13 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home &
Crematory, 659 East Greenwich
Avenue, West Warwick. A Masonic memorial service will be
held Monday at 7 PM at the funeral home. A graveside service
will be held on Tuesday, October
14 at 11:00 am in Swan Point
Cemetery, 585 Blackstone Blvd.,
Providence. In lieu of flowers,

ANDREW, SR., age 89, of
Greenville, husband of Elma
(Truppa) Tweedly, son of the late
Charles and May Lee (Denton)
Tweedly. Father of Charles A.
Tweedly, Jr. of Millbury, MA and
Karen A. Tweedly-Allen of Barrington, grandfather of Michael
C. Tweedly, brother of the late
Elsie Murphy, Rosemary Hesketh and Margaret Hunt. Charles
was a World War II Navy veteran
and was stationed in the Philippines Sea Frontier as a radio operator. After his discharge from
the Navy, he attended and graduated from the Rhode Island Technical Institute of Providence and
the Franklin Technical institute
of Boston. He was employed at
Otis Elevator as a maintenance
mechanic and retired in 1987. He
was a member Local 39 of the
Elevator Constructor’s Union in
Providence where he served as
President and Treasurer. Charles
was also a 32nd degree Mason
and was a member of Union
Lodge #10 in Pawtucket where
he served as Master and Secretary. Union Lodge merged with
Jenks Lodge #24 of Pawtucket.
He was also a member of Barney
Merry #29 of Pawtucket where
he served as secretary before
they merged with St. Johns #1 of
Providence. He was active as a
Mason and a Shriner. He was a
member of Daylight Royal Arch
Chapter 17, Doric Royal Council, Select Masons #7, St. Johns
Commandery #1, Knights Templar, Ancient Accepted Scottish
Rite Valley of Providence. As a
Shriner he was a member of the

Allan E. Reynolds, 95, died
Friday, September 5, 2014. He
was the beloved husband of M.
Barbara (Tucker) Reynolds with
whom he celebrated their 71st
wedding anniversary on March
19, 2014.
Born in Warwick, a son of
the late Edward J. and Lillian
H. (Allen) Reynolds, he lived in
Warwick before moving to West
Greenwich in 2006 and to Coventry in 2012. He served during
World War II as a Staff Sergeant
in the United States Army Air
Force. For 35 years he worked
as a Management Analyst employed by the United States Navy
at NAS Quonset Point retiring in
March of 1976.
Allan was a member of the
Masonic Fraternity for 67 years.
In 1947 he was raised to the
degree of Master Mason at Nathanael Greene Lodge #45, Warwick, now affiliated with Harmony Lodge #9, Cranston, where he
served as Worshipful Master in
1956-1957. In 1954 he joined the
Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite,
Valley of Providence. He was
made an Honorary Member of
the Supreme Council A.A.S.R.
Northern Masonic Jurisdiction
33 Degree in St. Louis, MO on
September 29, 1982. He was
elected Secretary for the Valley
of Providence in May of 1978
and again in June of 2007.
In 1957 Allan joined Palestine Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., now
Rhode Island Shriners and where
he served as Potentate in 1980.
He was a member of the Directors Staff; a past director of the
Oriental Band and a past secretary of the Knights of Mecca. He
also belonged to the Marhaba
Club, the Rubba Club and the
100 Club. Since 1982 he served
as Chairman of the Hodges Lawton Shrine Unit at Rhode Island
Hospital. He was a member of
the National Cabiri, Past Potentates Association and of Cabiri
Chapter #51.
His other Masonic affiliations included the Masonic Veterans Association, the National
Sojourner’s, Swords of Bunker
Hill, and Providence Court #71
Royal Order of Jesters. He was
a member and past patron of Sincerity Chapter #24 Order of the
Eastern Star, now affiliated with
Adah Chapter. He was a recipient of a Grand Lodge Veterans
Medal, a 50 Year OES medal and
the International Supreme Council Order of DeMolay Degree of
Chevalier.
He also belonged to the National Association of Retired
Federal Employees, Chapter
958, Warwick and the Providence Preservation Society. He
was a charter member of the
Sebastian Miniature Collectors
Society and an Eagle Scout from
Troop 2 Lakewood, Warwick,
where he served for several
years as assistant Scoutmaster.

brother: Kenneth E. Reynolds &
his wife Louise of South Kingstown; seven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren and two
great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be
held on Wednesday, September
10, 2014 at 4:00 PM at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. Relatives

4:00 PM. A Masonic service will
be held on Wednesday at 3:30.

Notice is hereby given that the ANNUAL MEETING OF THE RHODE ISLAND SHRINERS A.A.O.N.M.S. will be held Monday, January 5, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Shrine
Center, One Rhodes Place, Cranston, Rhode Island 02905. At that time, business pertaining to the Temple shall be transacted, reading of financial reports and the election of
Officers and Representatives to serve for the ensuing year. Also, election of three (3) members to the Board of Trustees of the Shriners of Rhode Island Charities Trust for a three
(3) year term, one (1) member to the Board of Directors of Hodges-Lawton Charities for a three (3) year term, and one (1) Trustee of the Temple for a three (3) year term shall
occur at this meeting.
A 2014 Membership Card is necessary for admission to this meeting.

ARTICLE XXV
Sec. 325.4
When Elected. Each temple must elect its officers and representatives at its annual meeting in January unless its bylaws allow the election to occur at the temple’s stated meeting in December.

Ballot.

Separate Ballot. Election of officers shall be by a majority vote of those present and voting. When there is more than one Candidate for election to a particular office, a separate written ballot is
required. A blanket ballot is prohibited.
Retention. The ballots cast in any contested election for temple office shall be retained in the custody of the Recorder for a period of 90 days following the election, after which they may be
destroyed unless the Imperial Potentate otherwise orders.
Void Ballot. Blank ballots or ballots containing any markings other than the name of a candidate nominated from the floor are not votes and are not to be considered for any purpose.
Sec. 325.6
Time of Election. Nominations must commence not later than 9:00 p.m. and when that hour arrives all other business must cease and none may be transacted until the election is concluded.
Sec. 325.7
Other Officers. The temple may elect such other officers as its bylaws provided.
Sec. 325.8
Nomination. Candidates for office and Representative must be placed in nomination from the floor.
Sec. 325.9
Leadership Search Committee. The Board of Directors may appoint a committee consisting of not more than five (5) Nobles to study the qualifications of possible candidates for elective office in the
temple. This committee may report their findings to the Board of Directors and/or to the temple members in the form of a nomination at a temple election. This committee may also consult with the Chief
Rabban on his appointments if so requested.
Sec. 325.10
Representatives.
(a) Single Ballot. Where a temple elects more than one Representative, all candidates must be balloted for on one written ballot.
(b) Complete Ballot. Each member voting must vote only for the total number of Representatives to be elected; otherwise his ballot cannot be counted as a vote.
(c) Majority Vote. A majority vote of those present and voting is necessary to elect each Representative.
(d) Election. Only those candidates who receive a majority vote shall be declared elected.
(e) Successive Ballots. Successive written ballots must then be taken in the same manner on other candidates until all Representatives are elected.
(f) Highest Vote. If more candidates receive a majority vote than the number of representatives to be elected, then those receiving the greatest number of votes shall be declared elected.
(g) Void Ballot. Blank ballots or ballots containing any markings other than the name of a candidate nominated from the floor are not votes and are not to be considered for any purpose.
Sec. 325.11
Election Regulations.
(a) Electioneering. A candidate for an elected office in a Shrine temple may print, publish and circulate during the year he is seeking the elected office, a resume consisting of his educational
background, his vocational history, and his Masonic and Shrine record. Except as provided in the prior sentence the printing, publication, circulating or distribution of resolutions, letter,
telegrams, tickets, email or other devices, by a unit, club Noble or group of Nobles, suggesting, recommending, opposing, or containing the names of proposed candidates for office in the
temple is prohibited.
(b) Expenditures Prohibited. The expenditure of money for gifts, favors, or entertainment on behalf of a candidate for elected office is prohibited.
(c) Violation. For any violation of (a) or (b), the Imperial Potentate may suspend any offending Noble, and he may declare the election of the officers void and order a new election.
(d) Notice. At least one week prior to the annual meeting or any election, the temple Recorder shall mail to each member a notice thereof containing this section.

It’s that time of the year when
the weather slowly changes,
leaves have fallen and a change
of good spirit is in the air. In all
of our busy lives, we somehow
find the time during the Holiday
Season to slow down our pace,
reflect on the year, think about
loved ones that are with us or
have passed, offer a kind smile
or gesture and do the things that
we don’t normally do.
Many Shriners or snowbirds
as we call them, have flown the
nest and headed down to Florida
or South where the weather is
warmer and the winter season is
extremely different from what
we experience here in Rhode Island and New England. For those
that choose to stay and bunker
down for winter, we welcome
you to come by the Shrine during the cold and winter days and
absorb some heat, enjoy a holiday libation, warm up and share
some good conversation with fellow members.

Shriners Hospitals for Children:
A History of Innovation and Excellence in Burn Care
Shriners Hospitals for Children®
is noted worldwide as a leader
in pediatric burn care. Since
opening our three pediatric burn
hospitals in the 1960s, our health
care system has been at the
forefront of innovative programs
and treatment techniques that
have both dramatically improved
the survival rate for children with
severe burns and enhanced their
quality of life.
Here is a brief timeline of
the development of our burn
care program:
1960s: In response to the growing
awareness of a need for pediatric
burn care, research and education,
the governing body of the Shriners
organization passed a resolution
at the Imperial Session in 1962
to build and operate hospitals
specializing in pediatric burn care.
The first one opened in 1966 in
Galveston, Texas, followed by
those in Cincinnati and Boston
two years later. The establishment
of these hospitals helped raise
awareness of burn injuries and
appropriate care throughout the
medical community.
1970s: Tremendous improvements
in survival rates were made,
particularly because of innovative
research in excision, grafting, and
intravenous feeding. In addition,
pressure garments that helped
lessen scarring were developed.
Shriners Hospitals for Children —
Cincinnati pioneered skin banking
– a precursor to future methods of
tissue, bone and skin procurement.
In addition Shriners Hospitals
for Children worked with the
United States Fire Administration
and Consumer Product Safety
Commission to identify burn
prevention programs for schools
and fire departments. And finally,
our Boston hospital began the
first school re-entry program
for patients.
1980s: Outpatient clinics were
added at the three burn hospitals
to provide continued care after
patients are discharged. Also,
researchers at Shriners Hospitals
for Children discovered that early
surgical excision and grafting
reduces infections, shortens
hospital stays and improves
cosmetic outcomes for patients.
Finally, Burn Awareness Week, a
national education campaign, was

created in an effort to raise public
awareness and reduce the number
of burn injuries in children.
1990s: Services were expanded at
our burn hospitals. Care was made
available for non-burn conditions
such as port wine stains, congenital
ear deformities and other complex
wound and skin conditions. In
addition, new programs were
set up to help burn patients with
psychological and social issues,
including transitioning back to
school and community. And, in
1997, Shriners Hospitals for Children
— Northern California opened in
Sacramento to serve children with
orthopaedic conditions, burns and
spinal cord injuries. The hospital has
become the busiest pediatric burn
center in the western U.S.
2000 - 2010s: Shriners Hospitals for
Children continues to demonstrate
and be recognized for their
leadership in burn care. The hospitals
in Boston and Cincinnati received
the Press Ganey Summit Award for
extraordinary patient satisfaction.
All four burn hospitals have leaders
who have served as president of
the American Burn Association
and three of the hospitals have
hosted or co-hosted the World Burn
Congress, an annual event of the
Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors
that brings together approximately
800 burn survivors and their families,
caregivers, burn care professionals
and firefighters to share experiences
and support one another.
In the years and decades to come,
Shriners Hospitals for Children
expects to continue its leadership
in pediatric burn care, and its longstanding legacy of improving the
lives of children.
