November 2014 The Chevroletter Official publication of The Chevrolet Club of WA Inc. Issue number 349 Engines on display at the GMO Day In this issue: Free Classified Ads & Information pages. Events for 2014/15. The GM Owners’ Day Neil’s Vermorel, a rare car. Chevroletter December 2014 1 Editorial Hello all Club Members, Well, the big event of 2014 is over, and the hard working Committee can relax until 2016. The GM Owner’s Day raised a lot of money for the Association for Brain Injured Children. There were just over 400 cars on show at the Steel Blue oval in Bassendean (some thought the term ‘blue oval’ was a sneaky move by a certain rival car make) and around 3,000 people entered the gates to admire them. One of our supporters had a major mishap with his 1957 Belair, when on arriving at the oval on Saturday evening the car stopped moving. A transmission problem was first diagnosed, but on towing the car into position one of the rear wheels detached itself, dropping the car into a most undignified position. A broken axle close to the hub was the culprit, so a tilt tray was brought on site and the car removed. One can only imagine what might have happened if this had occurred on the open road! Your editor’s car also suffered a similar problem many years back, but luckily very close to his local mechanic’s workshop. Keep on Chevying (as long as your money lasts), Hugh. NEW MEMBERS This month we welcome three new members. Steve Lonergan of Halls Head owns a 1997 Silverado, Robert Spain of Huntingdale is restoring a 1967 4 door, and Bradley Sherlock of Tuart Hill has an original 1957 2 door Sports Coupe. A warm welcome to all, and we look forward to meeting up and talking Chevrolet with you. Chevroletter December 2014 2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT Hello Chev Enthusiasts, Well another month has come and gone and Christmas is nearly here. GM Owners’ day saw a very good turn out with an impressive display by the Chev Club. It was good to see some members we don’t normally get to see and to just relax and talk with friends. Which leads us to the Christmas wind up for the year. I hope that you all can make it to Whiteman Park and don’t forget your present for Stealing Santa. This is always an enjoyable and fun day out so hope to see you there. Regards, Neil. Chevroletter December 2014 3 COMING EVENTS Dec 21: Annual Christmas ‘doo’ at Whiteman Park. Details below. McOwan & Co. in Melbourne Victoria where an Australian roadster body was fitted. There are only two known 1914 Vermorel model LO in the world today, the other one being a tourer in Switzerland. Nothing is known of the history of this car until Gath Fisher restored it in the 1980s. It was then brought into Western Australia by Dr. George Nunn and used extensively in rallies around Australia. After going through another two owners in W.A. I purchased the car in 2013. I had always wanted a veteran car and when this one came up locally at the right price I had to have a look. When I got the Vermorel it was licensed and driveable but the clutch wasn’t working well so the plan was to repair the clutch and have some fun driving the car and restore it later down the track. The paint was lifting and parts were chromed and nickel plated which wasn’t correct. After relining the clutch with leather I found the gearbox wouldn’t line up properly with the motor. This car doesn’t have a bell housing so alignment is critical. After further deduction I worked out that the part of the chassis that supported the motor was missing and bits of angle iron put in its place to support the motor. The only course of action was to strip the car down and rebuild the chassis. As we were soon to depart for the USA on holiday I decided to leave it alone until we returned. When we returned I stripped the car back to the bare chassis and started the repair. Someone had bolted a heap of scrap metal in the chassis so all this was removed, the missing chassis parts fabricated, sandblasted and painted. With a car this rare there is very little information around and no parts available so anything you need you basically have to manufacture yourself. The process of reassembling the car then started. As I progressed I found a lot of problems. The steering box was wrong and a suitable replacement was found and fitted. The brake and clutch pedals and linkages were wrong and had to be remanufactured. After about 9 months of working on the car the mechanicals were nearly complete. The problem was, I wanted to go on the national rally in October and at this rate it wasn’t going to happen. So I started work on the car full time to try and finish it. The body was solid with no rust but very thick with bog. Mum and I stripped all the paint and bog, panel beat the car and painted it with 2pac to give a nice shiny new look. A new dash was made and all brass was restored, polished and clear coated. Indicator lights and some electrics were fitted to provide safety and ease of use. This car originally had gas and kero lights with starting via the crank handle out the front (no electrics). The car was finally finished at 2 o’clock on the Friday, loaded straight on to the trailer and headed for Kalgoorlie. On the rally the Vermorel performed well with no problems and has since been on another run with the same result. Pictures and more on Vermorel on page 14. A rare car indeed and a tribute to our Chairman for the hard work and skill he (and his Mum) put into its restoration. Being a 1914 model it is now officially a centenarian, and under Neil’s care should last a long while. Vermorel was the family name of the business, which started as an agricultural machinery maker in 1850 near Lyon and produced motor vehicles from 1899 to 1932.
