It’s that time of year again when talk turns to … not
Christmas, but the Christmas advertisements.
The two which have really caught my eye this year are
the John Lewis one, featuring Monty the Penguin and his
search for love, and the Sainsbury’s one, based on the
true story of the Christmas truce of 1914 in the First
World War.
We know that the purpose of adverts is to get us to spend money with the company
which produces them, but at the same time these two manage to touch on different
aspects of the Christian message of Christmas.
The John Lewis advert uses Tom Odell’s version of the song “Real Love” by John
Lennon. It begins “All my little plans and schemes, lost like some forgotten dream:
seems like all I really was doing was waiting for you.”
Christmas is a reminder that the love we are waiting for is not just human (or penguin)
love, but divine love. This is what drove God to become one of us, so that we could
become one with God. Compared to God’s plan to redeem us, our plans and schemes
do become less important!
The Sainsbury’s advert is a moving depiction of an outbreak of peace amid the horror
of war. Of course we know it didn’t last, but even the possibility of such a moment
touches us very deeply with a longing for what might have been.
Christmas is a reminder that God’s desire for us is peace, not just in the sense of an end
to war, but also a peace between us and God, with all the sin that separates us forgiven
through Jesus.
When the angels sang to the shepherds outside Bethlehem:
‘Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace among those whom he favours!’
they weren’t trying to sell anything, they were simply announcing God’s arrival as a
human baby.
It’s up to us now to take the message of love and peace and make it real. It may seem
an impossible task, but God has laid the foundation and if we have the courage – like
the first soldier in the Sainsbury’s advert – to risk standing up, who knows what we can
achieve?

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR:
Firstly I would like to wish all our readers a Happy Christmas, and say
a very big ‘thank you’ to the team that contribute to and distribute
this Newsletter on a monthly basis – without you all this would not
be possible. I’m particularly pleased that this month we have strong
contributions from 5 out of our 6 villages which I feel gives much
better balance to the publication.
I would like to reiterate that this is primarily a community-led magazine supported by
advertising revenue which, at the moment, does not cover our full costs, therefore the
donations received from the various Parish Councils, Parochial Church Councils and
village groups are very much appreciated. If you feel that your group is benefiting from
inclusion in the Newsletter, and are able to make a donation, however small, it would
be very much appreciated - it’s also great to get your feedback so please keep it
coming.
I hope you enjoy this Christmas edition which includes a better quality cover and colour
throughout – this is something I would like to aspire to on a regular basis – comments

ROGER’S RAMBLINGS
Having completed a marathon Parish Council meeting, Roger has rambled off on
holiday, leaving me to update you on the meeting held on 11th November. At this
meeting we received reports from our County and District Councillors noting that
support for improvements to the A428 continue to gain momentum and that the
pothole in Potton End is scheduled for urgent repairs. Cllr Mandy Smith is also
arranging a meeting to clarify ownership of our numerous streetlights. We also had a
reminder encouraging us to use the Demand Response Transport Scheme that
operates within the village (see Cllr Angela Weldon for further information). It’s a
great service, but having campaigned long and hard, we do need to use this facility.
We discussed plans for siting the new swing in the play area and also agreed to look at
improving the existing equipment as well as the possibility of providing a slide subject
to funding.
We also heard about local crime activity and were reminded about the recent spate of
fuel thefts and the statistic that 50% of burglaries are preceded by a ‘cold caller’.
Please continue to be vigilant and look out for your neighbours also.
We discussed at length how the Parish Council should distribute the funds from the
sale of the Institute and, in accordance with the Ely Diocesan Board of Finance request,
agreed to gift to Croxton the sum of £15,000 with the remainder to be deposited in a
new Trust, ‘The Institute Trust’, which will be administered by the Parish Council for
the benefit of Eltisley residents (more details to follow).
We concluded the evening with a meeting of the Eltisley Village Green Trust where we
agreed to fund a new flagpole to be positioned adjacent to The Cade and the continued
subscription in support of the St Neots Museum. Entry to the Museum is free to
Eltisley residents so, if you have time, do call in as they have some very interesting
artefacts and displays.
As usual, the Peace Tree lights will be put up from the 5th December to the 5th January
and carol singing around the tree will take place, as always, at 6pm on Christmas Eve.
Finally, the Parish Councillors look forward to seeing you all at the annual Christmas
Party which, this year, will be held at The Cade on Sat 6th December, 2pm-4pm.
Normal ‘rambling service’ will be resumed next month!

STAY WARM THIS WINTER:
In Cambridgeshire there are approximately 250 cold related deaths during the winter.
There are some simple things that can be done to help the elderly and vulnerable
during colder weather to keep them warm and healthy and out of hospital. These
include drinking plenty of fluids, hot drinks will help to keep a
person warm and eat regularly. Heat the home to the right
temperature. The living room should be 21 C (70 F) and the
bedroom 18 C (65F). Below this and there is a risk to health and
above this temperature you will be wasting money. Certain groups
of people can get a free flu jab including the over 65’s, pregnant
women, people with an ongoing illness or if some one is the main
carer of an elderly or disabled person. There are grants available for financial support
with making the home more energy efficient, improve the heating and help with
heating bills. On cold days try to avoid going outside. If a person does need to venture
out they need to wrap up warm and take care on slippery surfaces. Please look out for
an elderly relative or neighbour this winter to make sure they are safe and well.

IT is the time of year when we’re enjoying
a tipple with friends, cooking heaps of
delicious food and decking the halls.
The fire service has these messages to
make sure your festive cheer doesn’t go
up in smoke:
• Kitchens are a fire hotspot, so take care
while cooking festive fancies. Never leave
cooking unattended and turn off
appliances when not in use.
• Switch off fairy lights and unplug them before you go to bed or leave the
house. Make sure they confirm to the British Standard and never
overload plug sockets.
• Be careful when drinking alcohol while smoking or cooking.
• Finally, make sure you have a working smoke alarm that is correctly fitted and
works. And NEVER take the batteries out to power presents!

ST PANDIONIA’S PARISH
Christmas starts early this year as St Pandionia launchs
our new Kids Rock club on Advert Sunday 30th
November at The Cade. More details elsewhere in the
Newsletter and there’s plenty more to look forward to
this month as we prepare for Christmas.
At the start of the month, there will be a special guest chef night at The Eltisley
on Monday 1st December with proceeds going to the church’s building fund.
Robin and Bex Faux will be cooking a 3-course meal and there’ll be mulled wine
and Christmas gifts available in the barn from 7pm. Tickets are limited so book
now by ringing The Eltisley on 01480 880308.
Our special Christmas services begin with the Christingle service at 4pm on
Sunday 14th December. It’s always a wonderful occasion as the children collect
their christingles, the candles are lit, the lights turned
down and we are reminded of the real message of
Christmas through the oranges, sweets and candlelight. Let Nichola know on 880285 if you would like to
help prepare the christingles on Saturday 13th
December. It’s always a fun job that will get you in the
Christmas spirit!
On Friday 12th December why not take the chance to stop your Christmas
preparations for a moment or two and pop into St Pandionia’s Café which will
be open from 10-11.30am at the church. As always, there will be a warm
welcome with coffee, homemade cakes and chat.
The Carol Service will be held on Sunday 21st December at 6pm. It will be a
traditional service of lessons and carols with mulled wine and mince pies served
after the service. If you would like to read or sing in the choir contact Sarah
(880214) or Sylvia (880409) who would love to hear from you. Finally, we’ll
look forward to welcoming you to church on Christmas Day at 10.30am for a
joyful all-age communion service. Coffee will be served from 10am.

TOSELAND
TOSELAND HARVEST SUPPER SUCCESS:
Toseland Parish Council reports another very successful and enjoyable Harvest
Supper, held in St Michael’s Church in October. Almost 60 people attended, so
the tables were full and there was a great atmosphere. A very big ‘thank you’
to the many cooks and helpers who made the event possible.
Ticket sales and a prize draw raised £429 which the parish council is planning to
put towards the costs of a traffic calming scheme, subject to county council
support.
The next Toseland get together is planned
for Saturday 6th December when the village
will be in festive mood for a Christmas dinner.

ELTISLEY WI:
A visit to Saffron Walden could well be on the list of things to do after our October speaker’s
very interesting talk on the town’s fascinating history and many attractions.
New members and lady visitors are always welcome to regular meetings which are usually held

The WI Centenary Baton comes to Eltisley!
In 2015 the WI in England and Wales will be celebrating its Centenary.
In the lead-up to the centenary year and the many events that will be taking place, a
“Centenary Baton” is travelling round the country visiting all of the 6,600 individual WIs
and giving the opportunity for all of the 212,000 members to feel part of this
momentous occasion.
On Friday 31st October it was the turn of Eltisley & Croxton WI

greet Cambridge Federation Chairman
Sally Kingman and take part in a
symbolic “receiving of the baton”
In just four days Sally visited all 66 of
the Cambridge Federation’s Institutes,
travelling nearly 400 miles to do so.
The newly re-decorated bus shelter,
festooned
with
bunting
and
accommodating tables adorned with
lace table clothes then became the
venue for a “bubbly and nibbles”
reception. A novel use for a bus shelter!
