IMPORTANT
Dear Families,
INFORMATION
In just a few weeks, we will begin Winter Break. But before break, students will be busy taking assessments including Acuity for grades 3-6, Reading Levels for grades K-6, and
classroom tests. There are also field trips planned for some
grade levels. We will continue to acknowledge positive behavior through Level 5 referrals, Administrative Bracelets, and Student of the Month recognition.
On Thursday, December 18, we have a family evening
planned of holiday cheer. We will begin with our Christmas Concert with performance by our choir at 5:30 PM. Then our Winter
Family Festival will begin at 6:00 PM. Please look for the announcements of details, and come out and enjoy an evening of
holiday fun.
December 20 Winter Break Begins
Extra Degree: Hopefully by now, you have heard your children
talking about The Extra Degree. This school-wide initiative is to
provide additional instructional support for all students according to their academic needs. The Extra Degree focuses primarily on reading and one day on math. Students read and rotate in
small groups focusing on grade level standards, non-fiction text,
skills, and technology based activities. Reading is essential, and
The Extra Degree is an initiative to provide that extra "boost" for
your child's academic success.

CONNOR PRAIRIE FIELD TRIP
The 5th grade class went to Connor Prairie for
their field trip to see a program provided by
Native Americans from Oklahoma. Students
from Mrs. Short’s class share their experiences.
“It was the best field trip ever. We are going
to tell you everything we did. First a man talked
about the instruments they use in ceremonies.
He called up volunteers to play some of the
instruments. They are very different from ours.
Next a woman told us about being Native
American and shared how she made some of
the clothes she was wearing, like her scarf and
dress and pretty feathered hat.
Then another man told about what bird feather they use in their hats. They use Mocking
bird and Hawk feathers. We got to touch the
hats, it feels just like soft hair. We also saw the
different kinds of animal skins like squirrels,
deer and raccoon.
The fourth room we were in the man talked
about the language. He shared two words with
us (one-knee-she) that means ‘Thank you’ and
(eye-saw-me) and it mean ‘Quiet” .
Finally we saw the people dance. Three men
beat on the drums and one of them sang, too.
Other people danced. Two ladies came out and
danced and one of them sang. Then they did
two different dances with the kids and adults.
The kids made a big spiral while dancing, then
we had to undo the spiral.
North Wayne BUILDer's
Student Council students are back on the
move to Make a Difference. They are called
BUILDer's. BUILDer's are students that:
Believe in change, Unite as a school, Involve
all students, Lead by virtues, Deliver a message. Student Council is made up of twelve 5th
and 6th graders who take pride in their schoolwork, maintain a good grade average, are role
models with displaying Panther Power behavior, and care about what's happening in our
school, community and world. These students
want to make a difference: Aury Rios,
(President), Thomillia Sims (Vice President),
Jeanette Howard (Treasurer), Melahn Glaspie
(Secretary), and members Samantha Puebla,
Katie Kirk, Alan Ayala, Belen Sepulveda, Aritza
Tapia, Joanna Rascon, Tyler Davis, Saniya
Ford and Nierah Sanders. Student council
introduces a new virtue of the month. The
virtue for November is generosity. This virtue
was seen throughout the school by students
who donated canned and boxed foods for the
needy. Students at North Wayne also helped
out by donating change to go towards the
needy. Student Council members created colorful signs to encourage all the students to help
with this cause. They helped collect the cans
daily and display them in the school showcase.
In December, Student Council members will
assist in decorating our school for the Winter
Festival. The BUILDers will be coming up with
a new community service for December's virtue:
thankfulness. Our members want to help within
the school and community so raising funds is
important. Our Supplies On Wheels will begin
soon. Pencils, eraser, crayons are some items
we will sell from $ .25 to $1.25. All the money
earned is given back to our school, through
beautification, student gifts during ISTEP and
supplies for students. The members help out
with Box Tops by collecting them from classrooms, trimming them, and the sponsors help to
count and mail them out. We have a new parent sponsor, Jennifer Barrientos, who will also
be contributing in helping student council with
Box Tops. Be on the lookout for BUILDers. You
may see them doing work within the school, or
within the community!

TITLE ONE TIP CORNER
4 Ways to Inspire Family Reading
Nourishing the Meal Time: Have your
kids read recipes aloud to you while
you’re cooking dinner. From ingredient
lists to cooking directions, this kind of family reading will help build vocabulary, fluency... and dessert!
Story Charades: Choose a story your
family knows well – like a well-read book
or fairytale -- and act out the beginning,
middle, and end of the story. If you have
more family than characters, a few could
do the acting and the others can be the
audience or be the narrator. This activity
helps readers re-examine and understand
story lines and details.
Who Am I? Choose one of your child’s
favorite book characters, and then describe his or her personality traits, problems, and physical descriptions until she
guesses the character’s identity. This
game is a fun way to pass time when
you’re stuck in traffic or at a bus stop.
Reach Out and Read: Boost family reading by involving loved-ones who live far
away. Using Skype or another video conferencing program, have your child share
a book with relatives. Make sure the book
is one that your reader has read a few
times already; repetition is a fantastic way
to enhance reading skills. Younger readers love to show-off their fluency, and oral
reading builds confidence. Grandma will
be pretty thrilled as well.
NOTES FROM HOME/SCHOOL LIASION
Thanks to everyone for the canned
good items and for contributing to our
“Penny Wars” in order to support the
Thanksgiving Drive. Mrs. Short’s 5th
grade class won the pizza party for
bringing in the most canned goods. Ms.
Hale’s 2nd grade won the Penny Wars
and earned a pizza party. Proceeds will
be donated to families in need throughout the Wayne community.
There is still time to order for the
holidays. Orders are due at the school
on Monday, December 8th. Free 1 lb bag
of Broccoli Florets. with a $40.00 purchase If you like to order online receive a free 1lb Pork Tenderloin with
$90.00 purchase. Use promotion code:
DECBONUS. Holiday special on preportioned cookie dough. Buy 2, Save $2.
AT HOME WORKERS .. Ana Dgez for
sharing her time at home for projects.
Student Council held the first of three contests from September until October. Box
Tops help our school because all the money
earned goes back directly to our school.
Each Box Top is worth $0.10. Last year,
North Wayne earned over $1,700.00. From
the first contest, our school collected over
5,000 Box Tops. This earned our school a
little over $500.00. Our contest winners are:
First Place: Mrs. Stevens' 6th grade, 2nd
Place: Miss Hendricks' 3rd grade, 3rd Place:
Ms. Lile's 3rd grade. Student Council wants
to thank all the parents for their support in
turning them in. Our next contest will take
place the whole month of December, ending
the next to last day before break, Thursday,
December 18th. Our final contest will take
place from January until March.
WORKROOM … LaTanya Dodds, Pamela
Robinson and A’Gwana Ford.

It was the very best field trip we ever went
